All great points. Even though I've been in hybrid since May last year, I can clearly see that the benefits of working from home far outweighs that of working at office. It's especially true if there's a toxic work environment to begin with. Work from home kind of shields you from that type of environment allowing you to focus more on tasks at hand. One of the many benefits that I can think of 🙂

I work for Amazon as well and even though I’m hybrid I am against the RTO mandate. There are people out there who moved away from the corporate offices for a reason who have families and kids in school and spouses with jobs. To be honest, I don’t think Amazon is a compensation leader or a work culture leader. They will lose a good amount of people with this policy change which is exactly what I think they’re planning for. Resignations are cheaper than severance and it doesn’t come with negative headlines. I totally understand that there are benefits to working as a team in an office, but those are benefits which really only support the business. If they aren’t leading in compensation or work culture and are asking employees to uproot their lives for them, what’s the reason to stay?

i feel you man. I dont think there is a right model to improve collaboration but on this one, I dont think the collaboration or the reasons CEO has mentioned are truly the "reason". let's see what happens

As an Amazon employee that drove an hour each way to the office today…. I think the new policy bogus. Prior to joining Amazon I worked remotely for 7 years and was able to increase productivity by eliminating the stresses of commuting and dealing with office culture. It feels like Amazon is doing this to force people’s hands. It’s a gross move.

Agree with you that the employers have more leverage / power from the layoffs and softer job market -- so they figured this is a good time to make people RTO. I left Amazon the day before this announcement came out (I also moved further south post-COVID and my commute would have been ~1 to 1.5 hours each way via car).
