@@DeathfromAboveWargaming could have changed the game! 1 in 36 chance :). next turn the turkina I think also got one. You guys picked up the crit rolls on turn 3 I think.
DFA - another great mission and batrep. Dan, congrats on the W! So, the Warhawk pilot name is Felix 'Lucky' Snuka and the Warhammer pilot name is Mjollnir 'Hammer' MacKenzie. All legitimate Ghost Bear bloodnames. I did enjoy watching the Clan on Clan fight. Aaron, boom or bust on the dice rolls. I agree, the Black Lanner would have changed the initial dynamics even with Dan's dominance on the initiative rolls. The Night Cow totally underperformed, I think it scored one point of damage and did a poor job of being a meat shield for Aaron's left flank. Dan did a good job of getting the Warhammer into medium range fairly early on and did a great job maneuvering the Warhawk to focus down the Nova Cat while limiting damage; Felix Snuka is a survivor.
Thank you for posting these videos. I didn't know this was still a relevant board game, but I do remember playing it in the late 90's I might have been 9 or 10. It would be fun to get into again.
Glad to see another AS report! I'm an unabashed Smoke Jaguar fan. I hate the Cats for selling out the Jaguars. The Combine didn't go far enough in the 3140s to stamp them out. "I hate clan mechs. No, I love clan mechs. No wait, I hate them again." LOL, Aaron you crack me up. Loved the battle report as always, guys. Dan got a win! Warhammer IIC finally made an in game appearance and got a win! I would like to think that the Star Commander was in the Warhammer IIC, and made good on her proclamation, by blowing out the Timber Wolf's candle with the final shots. Remember folks, it is not arrogance if you can back it up! I could hear and feel Aaron deflating like a salty whoopie cushion when seeing what a monster the Warhammer IIC is. Still #2 on the Battlytics charts, with only the Dire Wolf A topping it! Well played though. Enjoyed watching the whole thing. Also looking forward to the 2nd Wargames album to launch.
This was a fun one. Though I really miss combined arms in alpha strike. Some BA support might have made a big difference in controlling those objectives. Congrats to Dan! Oh, and the voice acting at the beginning was really good once again. You've found some real pros!
It's awesome to see some Ghost Bear and Nova Cat mechs on the field! Although, I would totally opt out of the pilot die idea. Seeing it come up as a one would be horrifying. Just roll 3 pairs of dice all at once, then pair them up.
What a bloodbath! This one seemed like it was over from the start, the early 2v2 fight just did not go Aaron's way, and that was really the end of it. Terrible shooting on the Nova Cat's part. I still prefer Destiny to AS, but this fight definitely still had some flavor to it.
Finally getting a chance to sit and watch the whole battle without pausing or stopping. Love looking at those buildings, and just wish I had a 3D printer which could manage them. (The one I have access to with a friend is FDM and he's not sure most of the Hardware models will print well with it.) The gravel as scatter terrain is a nice touch for the camera, did it count as rough terrain or something during the combat? I'm gathering there's not all too many alterations to Alpha Strike base rules here: - The change to range bracket modifiers, and adding Extreme. This seems like it permits long-range 'Mechs to start shooting earlier even if they're at a sizable disadvantage to hit. As well as the mentioned +1 at Short (3"?) making it a little less of a sure thing. - The 'variable damage' and pilot die. I do love this rule (or pair of rules) and plan on introducing it to the table. I wonder if how well this sort of "pilot die" thing works for CBT? Though that ruleset is remarkably sensitive to tinkering, I've found, have to be cautious. I'm not sure if I'm missing many others which are custom/altered rules. Planning on showing this video to sort of illustrate how AS plays out to my brother so we can give it a try after we finish out our CBT campaign. :) Rough luck for Clan Nova Cat, but maybe they just were Spirit Cats which had done too many drugs before being returned to the Clan proper.
Thanks! And yes - extreme range and the long range targeting mods are all published optional rules in the Commander’s Edition. The pilot die is a homebrew, and we have used it with classic - there is a video in the classic batreps playlist that explains how it works 👍

That pilot die mechanic makes no sense. Yeah, it speeds things up but it makes that single pilot dice waaaaay to important. And no, the statistics don’t work out. The distribution curve is very scewed when compared to the normal rolls.
Appreciate the comment, and understand your knee-jerk reaction - but check your math. Specifically, look up how independent probabilities work and build a spreadsheet to simulate the rolls or calc the probabilities for you. Roll 2d6 or 4000d6, you will always have the same chance to roll a given number on any one die. From a probability to hit perspective, the pilot die mechanic sits somewhere between the RAW 2d6 method and the optional “multiple attack rolls” rule.
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming Thanks for the quick response. I’ll check later. My comment was not about the average chance to hit but the distribution. Let me explain. Say you have 4 pips and a target number of 8. If you roll a one on the pilot die in round 1 and 2 (1 chance in 36) you do 0 damage whatever your second dies roll. True, if you roll sixes twice you ace the shots if you avoid 1’s on the second die and statistically over 4000 rolls it will check out. But the distribution curve will be very different. In the pilot die system the example (all 8 misses no matter what the second die is) = about 3%. With the old system it is about 1%. The pilot die system flattens out the distribution curve but I need to check that to be sure what the shape is. Correct me if I’m wrong because math classes are 30 years in my past. ;) ( yeah, I played the original original classic battletech)
Right but if you need an 8 and roll 2d6, the same thing applies… if you roll a 1 on the first dice, you are going to miss no matter what you roll on the second.
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming Yes, nut the chances of that happening eight times in a row are far less likely to happen than just twice in a row. As I said, statistically ON AVERAGE it is the same. But the likelihood of getting extreem results is way higher as so much depends on a flat d6 roll instead of multiple bell-curved 2d6 rolls..
I’m not sure we are on the same page. Let’s assume you need an 8+ to hit. In the 2d6 method you attack four times over four turns. You roll dice A and dice B. In this regard you roll dice A four times. The probability of getting a 1 four times in a row on dice A is 1 in 1296. In the pilot die method, you roll four times as well. There is no gradient of damage, so while the argument about extreme results is a common perception (and for certain TNs can feel very boom/bust), it is not really supported by the data when compared to the RAW method. Actually the pilot die method is more likely to “do something” than “do everything” or “do nothing”. So in that regard you are right that the average damage over some number of turns will eventually converge between the two methods. Apply the same logic of independent (dice A) probabilities to any TN. If its 4+, all I need is a 4 or better on one dice (50%) to hit everything. I am not saying the probability to do X damage is identical - its not. But as mentioned in an earlier comment, it is statistically between the RAW 2d6 method and the optional “multiple attack rolls” rule in the Commander’s Edition.
