IMPORTANT: It has been determined that the Shadow Pokemon in Colosseum will NEVER be shiny on the opponent's side if it is the first encounter with the Shadow Pokemon!! Meaning that the dreaded opponent's Shiny Shadow Pokemon situation only applies to rematches, where the Pokemon's shininess and stats have already been set for when you catch it anyway! This is good news because that means that if you do everything correctly and hunt the Shiny Shadow Pokemon on your first encounter with it, you have no chance of getting an uncatchable shiny. The only exception is Hitmontop, since it first gets generated for the opponent in the cutscene with the Pikachu!

This was found by one of my friends. He has told me himself that he accidentally killed it before the hunt and has it in the description of the video that is a rebattle. It is tougher to tell it is a rebattle because this hunt is Japanese exclusive and I can't read Japanese, but you can compare the text Bodybuilder ワーバン says before the beginning of the battle in Professor Rex's video to that of Chrystalials and ForceMaster89 and can tell that they are clearly different imgur.com/a/MDyeIiM.

My Colosseum Comrades and I have done at least a combined 100 thousand resets and none of us has gotten a shiny on the opponents side. Professor Rex has also simulated 30k resets on emulator with a program he made with the same results.

This video deserves way more attention. It's a huge help. Saving the game right before the Spot Monitor goes off seriously works, and it's how I was able to get a Shiny Gligar in XD!

I recently got a shiny Hitmontop on Colosseum. It was normal, snagged it, then it became shiny! Rockin' a pink Hitmontop now.
I had no idea that you could find shiny Pokemon in this game. I just knew that I loved Altaria and I needed Swablu every time I played the game again. So when it finally came time to purify the Pokemon you can imagine how surprised and excited I was that the little Swablu was yellow. I freaked and just stared at the screen for so long!! I still have my that shiny to this day and I will never let him go.
Purifying the poke won't reroll the shiny etc, so you could've seen the yellow color before purifying it v:
I know this comment is years old but if you still have him there's a way to trade him all the way up to sword/shield if you want to keep him for sentimental value

Hey, I want to provide a tip to you Colosseum hunters out there, if you’re okay with glitches. Have your first pokemon use the ball you were going to use, and then on your second Pokemon’s turn, swap the ball’s placement in your bag. The ball won’t be used up. It’s helpful for late game shinies like Metagross, Tyranitar, or Skarmory
So then this also saves a lot of money on Pokéballs, since you only need one of whatever kind you’re using, and then once you get a better kind of Pokéball, you can sell the previous kind you were using, and once you get the Master Ball you wouldn’t need to ever buy Pokéballs again.

Great Guide dude.As someone who managed to get a Shiny sandshrew in the rock pokespot its possible to get shiny pokespot pokemon.One thing I dont heard was that when you encounter the shiny pokemon, it DOES NOT show the orbs flying around the pokemon

I've played XD since my childhood, and only recently thinking about how the shiny mechanics worked in that game. If shiny Eevee is possible, I'll definitely try to hunt him just for the sake of saying "Yeah, this shiny? Caught it on XD." when I transfer it to my copy of Omega Ruby. But is shiny Eevee actually a possibility? Or was the video you watched staged?

I had a colosseum file years back that generated a shiny Murkrow the second encounter I went to battle it. I caught it and it didn't retain its shiny form. BUT I went to go to Qwilfish and it took like 30 ultra balls but I caught it and went to my p.c. And it was shiny. I still have him to this day on my leaf green. I read threads and stories about how people have gotten random shinies and some have hunted relentlessly but have gotten none. As far as the question as if certain files can't produce shinies is true, I kind of agree. Although my one file technically produced two, I have had countless of other accounts and personally did 2000 resets for Raikou and haven't gotten a single one since that profile.
Im glad theres someone doing a video on this, though is a shame the Shiny shadow glitch existed, screw you Colosseum, basically NOTHING is guarunteed in Colosseum to keep as a shiny, its a shame they couldn't just PATCH it like the Master ball glitch in XD, also MY FIRST EVER SHINY WAS A SUICUNE IN THE BATTLE CD, IT WAS TERRIBLE, I eventually rehunted it YEARS later in Soul Silver, where I was successful in reclaiming it! Still its a scar which is the only reason (well alongside no tri attack Togepi can be shiny...) why I won't hunt here except on Colosseum for Suicune once more to finally be able to put it back on XD where it belongs

I never thought shinies were really in the game and I used to play these games till I broke the discs and now that I know they do exist I have a new reason to play some of my most beloved Pokemon games

great video Matt. I haven't played these games in forever. I've actually never shiny hunted in either of them. I'm too addicted to the handheld versions when it comes to shiny hunting.
To add on what Perujako said, i want to point out that another french hunter did really advanced researches on Colosseum and found out that the RNG acts pretty weird. I won't explain everything but he came to the conclusion that since the game needs to generate a specific normal pokemon, it takes time to generate the shadow one, which means that the shadow pokemon can be exactly the same (IV, nature and shininess wise) for roughly 3 seconds, which can be a problem if you reset and start the fight at the exact same time on every reset. There are also strong rumors that your chance of getting a shiny depends on the file you create, which means you can have a file that will never produce a specific shiny. The only way to get around this is to delete the save file in the memory card. I hope you will prove this wrong with a shiny of your own.
ah interesting!!! ginzaru_xd has full info on the rng mechanism with a program on his site, but it's unfortunately all in Japanese and hard to interpret through google translate. I may periodically restart my file on this hunt until I learn more about this

I caught my own shiny zubat at a poke spot on XD, the wild shinies don't shine they only look different (shiny) all xd shadow pokemon are shiny locked, poke spot pokemon and the trades from that one guy (can't remember his name) can be shiny on xd, for colosseum though there aren't many if any shiny locked but they are / would be a bitch to get as shinies ingame
I made the mistake of deciding which pokemon to hunt before looking how to obtain them, and now im looking at a very very long hunt for shiny shuckle in colosseum...

Just started hunting on my pokemon xd but I was wondering on how you save right before the pokespot comes up?
I know i am a bit late to the party, but i was wondering if, in Pokemon Colosseum, you could avoid a trainer until after you beat the game, and then go back and still shiny hunt for their shadow pokemon, or if beating the game just locks everything down?
as long as you dont encounter their shadow pokemon you are fine. numbers aren locked in untill the first time you see the shadow pokemon
I admit I just got Colosseum last night and have XD, both on a dolphin emulator (I have XD as an original cd too but can’t really play it anywhere. Only have a Wii u and not a Wii/or Gamecube)
I’m definitely excited to hunt for all the Pokémon in colosseum and I think I’m insane enough to actually try and attempt a shadow shiny living dex with this game.
So from what I understand, only in your first encounter with the shadow Pokémon is when you can possibly have it shiny. Not in the second encounter because it’ll be too late by then?
Also according to another guide by Oliver_MKP it’s suggested to have a team you can lose to the trainer before the first encounter with the shadow Pokémon, that way it will make the hunt easier I think when soft reseting.
But I think using your method will be easier of just saving in an area before the first battle and I’m definitely excited to hunt for my own shadow bayleef in the future since Chikorita is my favorite starter from Johto. Is it possible to shadow hunt bayleef in the story where you encounter it with the first trainer, you know before the other two get randomly placed into the Shadow Labs and the other area in after post game?
The Wii U does work with Nintendont if you dump your disc, but you can't plug a GBA in so...

I also studied about shiny hunting in this game (discovering in the same time while i was hunting for Entei with masterball, that he had every time the same nature etc...) but when you talked about shiny locked Umbreon and Espeon on Colosseum i'm curious. I've heard rumor in french shiny hunting community that some one tryed to find them and successfully do it. I'm not pretty sure about this but i'm curious to know how do you discovered their shiny lock.
If you want to see something about the simulation shinies, in dailymotion, a french shiny hunter already found a shiny Salamence (drattak in french) 2 time and recording for the second while she was hunting for the Eevee.
I'm interested about shiny hunting on Colosseum, but about the legendary pokémon i think its just insane and useless to try them. I Already try a long hunt (and i dont actualy finish it) and i think if someone try for the legendary, they will easily take years to close it (Because need to catch them each time with ultra ball, you can't really do a pokemon catching team)
So i think it will be nice to list the pokemon to hunt, and for each of them how to hunt them the better as possible.

I got the info about Espeon and Umbreon from a really short comment on this thread by Kaphotics, who I personally trust with all of his RNG experience www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/2dos31/pokemon_colosseum_resetting_for_shiny/ However, I wouldn't be surprised if there were actually a way to find them, perhaps with a certain trainer name/ID, but at this point, until I really see evidence, and considering the number of people who have played through Colosseum without posting any evidence, I would say that they are locked.

I think the hunts that are most worth it in Colosseum are the ones for Pokemon that you would have to hatch for otherwise in 3rd gen, which may be more tedious, like Hitmontop at Agate Village. Unfortunately, there's a big walking distance with that one. ^^`I may make a little guide graphic soon detailing those hunts

***** Yes, but for the egg on the 3rd gen they are now a really easy way to hunt them by the pomeg glitch (for exemple my jirachi but to got him you have to use a most deep use of the pomeg glitch)
So today, you can do short hunt by hatching egg (and they are nice hunt to do like Jynx for exemple, or Celebi if you want to do like the Jirachi)
But, Hunting on colosseum seems to be fun, i've tryed until see the problem with my similar Entei. But i think i will try one day (i was thinking about Heracross, you find it after you got the masterball, and this ball is nice for him :3)

if you snagged a shadow suicune, when he went to your team he wasn't shiny so when you purified it he still was not ^^ (its after catching you can see if still shiny or not)

Hey! I had a few questions I was hoping you might clear up. So, I'm attempting to hunt for Sudowoodo in Colo, but there are some factors that make this a bit tedious.
1.) If I encounter a shadow pokemon in battle once, then lose, will it become locked? I know you said "No second encounters", so then answer is probably yes, but I had to ask. I really want a Male, and I know they'll stay the same gender forever if you see them once, but I don't want to accidentally prevent it from ever being shiny.
2.) Can I safely lose a fight BEFORE I see a shadow pokemon and still be able to hunt, ala fight Miror B.'s Ludicolos only, then lose? The cutscene for Miror B. is a tad time consuming, and being able to skip past it would help, but I wasn't sure if doing that would ruin my chances.

oooh these are interesting questions.
1. Hmm since it stays the same gender forever after you lose once, I think it's safe to say you're encountering the same Pokemon over and over at that point, meaning that it will never be shiny.
2. I'm not quite certain on that either! I'd say try it out, and if the Pokemon stays the same gender forever, then it's probably already set.

Ok! After about 3 hours of playing the game, I can say with certainty that as long as you don't SEE a shadow pokemon, they aren't locked in any way. I had to play all the way up to Miror B. since he's the first person in the game to not immediately send out their shadow.
So, after losing to him first, then saving, I went back and fought him a couple times. His Sudowoodo was able to be both genders, so that should prove that it wasn't locked by battling but not seeing.
Anyway, time for me to go shiny hunt! Hope this tiny bit of info will help shave time off of some hunts like Metagross and T-tar. :D
First time I played though Colosseum I got a shiny tropius and a shiny furret. I even knocked out the tropius and it stayed shiny after I rematched it. I still have them (tho obv didn't film the encounter so no real way to prove I didn't hack them). I can only assume I had a very lucky id and sid, or maybe the pal games worked differently for whatever reason?

+xMarcelx Duking's pokemon trades in xd are not shiny locked. Some programmers found that out through hacking on smogon. Espeon and Umbreon in Colosseum are also shiny locked.

This video is a huge help to me, I'm trying to get a Shiny at the Rock Poké Spot. So, saving right before the Spot Monitor is gonna go off, that really works? The Spot Monitor going off isn't at complete random- it'll go off every time you reload the game and take the same number of steps?

VGE nope! it is on the bonus disc separate from Colosseum itself, and it has been proven to not be shiny locked. Not 100% sure how hunting that would work though; iirc there are only a handful of possible natures it can be shiny as

2:17 Incorrect, it is not because it was originally Gonzap's. Shadow Pokemon do not have OT info, and they're the only Pokemon you can snag. They're also the only trainer-owned Pokemon with randomly generated personality bytes. Their personality bytes are always generated based on *your* OT info, plus the trainers you battle against don't have OT data because there's *no need for it*. Shadow Pokemon losing their shininess is actually a *glitch* that happens every time you snag a Shadow Pokemon, where their personality bytes get *rerolled* after a snag, and that's what determines if a Pokemon is Shiny or not. As for why the glitch happens, I have no idea.

I was wondering if the right way to do it is to save before battling the trainer who owns the meditite and then battle, capture and check if it's shiny, if not, reset and just try to capture again? So, if the starter Espeon and Umbreon are shiny-locked, are their genders set too, or can they be female? I kind of have a bit of a habit of resetting for female starter Pokémon (though I’ll settle for one female and one male, here, since a female Espeon and female Umbreon would be a 1/64 chance! I am _not_ messing around with that!).
They're locked to be male AND not shiny. Game Freak didn't want Eevee released before FRLG.

Fairly certain that's just a rumor that's been circulating for years. I've found no evidence to prove that. AFAIK shadow Pokemon can simply not be shiny in XD

You know I wish I had a recording device when I was playing colosseum. My Miltank was pink until I purified it. I obviously have no proof to this but it is just one of those things that you wish you could go back and change.
HatchetKrow Purifying won't change shiny value. If it's shiny when you catch it, it will stay shiny.

Damn I was looking into do the all ribbons challenge, and wanted to add to the Pokemon by catching a shiny. But alas since the shadows in XD are shiny locked that would make me lack one ribbon

LivingPropaganda From what I can tell, yes, surprisingly, even though in other games in-game trades can't be shiny. From my understanding, in XD they are calculated using YOUR secret ID, and so they can be shiny. (this does NOT include the Shadow Togepi, just the Elekid, Meditite, Shuckle, and Larvitar) I unfortunately haven't seen any real photo/video evidence of this, but at the same time most experts agree that it's possible.

***** Aww man, figured it was locked, but even more confirmation sucks, The thing that got me into competitive battling was actually the Shadow Togepi, it became an evoilite Togetic which dominated while my friends never knew about EV training.

LivingPropaganda when you trade a pokemon things like Shininess are mirrored for what you receive so if I trade a shiny Croconaw for a Raticate the Raticate will be shiny. at least that's the way it works in Gen3

there is none in Colosseum, only in XD (which is X,Y, start iirc). You have to hit the reset button on the gamecube/wii

***** Yes Josh, by seeing the problem on colosseum ,when the Pid of the pokemon is adaptated to trainer TID and SID, so about the change between before/after catch, so they decided to lock evey shadow pokemons (and imagine how a shadow lugia can be shiny x) )

I think that the game released at a time where it was really easy to spread rumors about Pokemon, and these rumors turned into tall tales about shiny Lugia. I think the most outstanding thing out there is that there is no proof that anyone has ever captured a shiny Lugia in XD despite the hundreds of thousands of people who have played the game. I believe it is generated in the exact same manner as the other shadow Pokemon, so I don't think there's a possibility of it being shiny :(
