could it be that some guy whose name was Joe had a cafe that was so popular people would call drinking a coffee there a "cup at joe's" or a "cup of joe's"? Eventually the name would spread and become "a cup of joe". Or was it originaly a "cup of joy" but someone had the great idea of swapping joy for joe? we will never know.
here in Italy there are a lot of different ways to order a coffee (caffè in italian) there is: espresso lungo (more coffee than a espresso) ristretto (a "short coffe) macchiato caldo (with hot milk) macchiato freddo (with cold milk) schiumato (with a little of foamed milk) marocchino (moroccan, there's no a unique way but in general there is some cocoa somewhere) corretto (a nice way to say "with alcohol") americano d'orzo (barley coffee, you can also ask for the "tazza grande" which means that you want the cappuccino cup) di gingseng (gingseng coffee) con ghiaccio (with ice) affogato (with ice cream) caffè freddo (cold coffee) shakerato (mixed in the shaker) cappuccino cappuccino chiaro/scuro (more milk/less milk) caffè latte (it's right, if you ask for a latte, you receive a glass of milk) and so on and so on
Dimes On His Eyes sure, simply caffè, it could be made with the moka pot, with the bar machine or with the automatic machine. Then you ask your favourite modification of it but there's a lot of people thant drink coffee even sugarless
In Portugal the name changes with the region. The must known names are the ones give Porto and Lisbon. In Porto they call it "Simbalino", because of the machines in which the coffee was made. The machines mark/producer was Simbalino (and Italian Company, if I'm not mistaken). In Lisbon you call it "bica", because in beginning of coffee house in Lisbon, to have one you would have to go to the neighborhood of Bica. With time became . Thank for the video
+Name Explain you two should form your own version of the Grey Brady duo. You're both cool knowledge channels and it'd be nice if you could do collab or something. But that's just a thought
1:46 expresso does not exist in Italian! The translation of espresso is express, like "corriere espresso" meaning "express courier" or "esprimere un'opinione" meaning "to express an opinion". Few words in Italian have the x letter in them as it's not a character native to latin.
You could do one about beers too. As far as I know in Europe, they have mainly related origins which are connected with each other. Like ALUS in Latvina (simmulary in Finnish or Lithuanian), PIVO in Russian (and other slavic languages) and BEER simmular in Germanick languages.
Joe 'awful' Coffee was a flywieght boxing legend that started a coffe shop called Joe awfuls coffee in Denver that is why its called a cup of joe and thats why it didn't show up until the 30s
Just founded your channel, its awesome. But sticking to the topic, what do you have to say about Kaffa province in Ethiopia, from were the coffee drink has originated? Did the place gave name to drink or vice versa? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaffa_Province
I'm sorry, but I must correct you on the "cup of Joe" thing. In fact, though I am a big fan of yours, for the first time ever, the tone in your voice on that part makes me want to slap you because of the disrespect you are showing by that dismissive tone to my grandfather and to the strong oral history among sailors. See, my late grandfather joined the USCG in the late 30's, just as WWII was breaking out. One of the most passionate seamen I have ever known, he spent his later years as Compass adjuster and, more pertinent, a Professor near here, teaching both Navigation and Naval History. He was the kind of guy that people would turn to to fix other CA's "adjustments" and that the USCG would hire to come to Alaska to adjust the compasses on the AK fleet. He heard the story you just dismissed off hand from a sailor who had started using the term for the reason you mentioned. I must emphasize to you that he heard it FIRST HAND while old Joe Daniels himself was STILL ALIVE. And part of it was how, even before banning alcohol, Joseph Daniels had already made coffee a mandatory part of daily rations - first on his ship as a captain in the late 1800's and in his fleet as an Admiral. In fact, it was a term of endearment celebrating an admiral who brought the American Navy up to speed from being almost a joke in the latter half of the 19th Century. It's not a "scenario" it is what happened. Told to me by my grandfather; a Professor of Navigation and Naval History and one of the less than 10% of Sea Captains with an Unlimited License, which permitted him to pilot a vessel of any size in any waters in the world... Not a person to be argued with unless you are a peer in his field, is what I am saying. For the most part, I really liked this video. But that one section at 2:51 completely ruined it for me and forced me to give you a downvote. Not because of the inaccuracy, but because of the disrespect and dismissive attitude you showed to oral history in general. I apologize for going off on a rant like that. Still a subscriber, still a fan, but, as a sailor and for the memory of my grandpa, that one stung.
Coffee helps to metabolize some of the harmful byproducts of alcohol consumption. It's been shown that people who drink at least three cups a day have a much lower risk of cirrhosis.
Which is why Old Joe instituted coffee as a mandatory ration, first on his ship as a Captain, then later in his fleet as an Admiral before he gained the power to banish alcohol altogether in WWI.
Nice video. You could try making videos explaining why countries are called what they are. For example why Poland is called Poland or why is Pakistan called Pakistan (basicly explaining meaning and origins of countries name). BTW keep up the good work
+Gracjan Lekston Thanks for the nice words. The first few videos on the channel are all country based and I plan on doing more country videos in the future. I just wanted to do a selection of non country based videos so I didn't paint myself into a corner and people only think I do them.
Your timeline doesn't add up! It was first called a "cup of George" during the Great War (WWI). The name George is often shortened to “Geo.” and there’s no written record of the phrase “cup of Joe” until after 1930. Coffee’s “cup of George” got started during WWI, long before it was referred to as “Joe”. Is this where “cup of Joe” originated? It makes a lot of sense. Check it out on Wiktionary!
I like your character model. It looks like Gordon Freeman done in MS Paint. That's not an insult, I really like half life. I'm guessing that's a cartoon of yourself and all. Just wanted to give you a like and say I like the art style. Keep up the videos, I enjoy them.
Firstly, I do greatly appreciate the time and effort that you put into this video. Keep up the good work! That being said, the idea of it 'being really unlikely' that something could have been coined and recorded with such a gap between is *INCREDIBLY COMMON*. There are myriad examples of such things, hell, some phrases are hundreds of years old, but so ubiquitous that nobody ever thought to write or explain where they came from. If that is your only reason for it not being from 'Joe Military', I find it really disappointing that you would say it is outright *NOT TRUE*, I mean, come on... That is incredibly naive and thoroughly disappointing.
Hearing American's refer to coffee as a "cup of Joe" literally makes my skin crawl - I hate it. Argh!! I hate it!... Thank God I'm a Central Londoner & therefore never have to hear this butchery.
joe vesso is my uncle kinda funny that tyhey tell you the truth about the cup of joe and the express vesso then thjey lie to you not even two min later anmd you wind up believing the lie and it wasnt even two mins for cryimng out loud
esspresso was originally called express it was called that by a coffee shop called "cup o' joe's" it became esspresso by a customer who pronounced X as S and added OH! at the end of every sentence he said "can i have an espress OH!" Cup Of Joe found it funny and renamed it esspresso

All hail the people's republic of coffee!!!
Hooray! I'm having my morning tea now.
Seize the *beans* of production, comrade.
For a while, I was in the middle of it where I loved the smell of coffee but couldn't stand the taste. Eventually, I grew to love the taste too!
+ARTexplains Very nice! I think the smell is universally agreed on as being awesome.
This is an amazing channel, You deserve to be more known among the community
Lol you were that guy who said they wanted to be buried next to a tree or something on Vsauce’s taxidermy video?

"Who is Joe and why is he in my cup of coffee"
*J o e m a m a*
I'm so in love with these!
I'm with Brady, can't stand the stuff, is coffee the fuel that powers your creation process like Grey or are you with me and Brady?
+Soliloquy I want the be a Grey. I do enjoy coffee but anymore than one cup and my stomach turns to water so I'm a Brady. Glad you got the reference!
+Name Explain Well I have referenced Hello Internet myself. :)
+Soliloquy Ah I've seen grey references in your videos but not Hello Internet ones. I'll have to scout it out.
+Name Explain you two should form your own version of the Grey Brady duo. You're both cool knowledge channels and it'd be nice if you could do collab or something. But that's just a thought
I know this will seem bad to all coffee snobs but if you add just a pinch of salt it removes the bitter notes. Still makes me poop. 😂

Skip to 2:30 for why coffee can be called "a cup of _Joe_".
The legend says that in Lisbon a coffe is caled Bica because of the acronym Beba. Isto. Com. Açucar (Drink this with sugar) because is bitter taste
u should do one on why we have different names for our bathrooms
Joe 'awful' Coffee was a flywieght boxing legend that started a coffe shop called Joe awfuls coffee in Denver that is why its called a cup of joe and thats why it didn't show up until the 30s
