- Learn how to set up your own spiral wrap, also known as an acid wrap, and why it's so useful in fishing applications where the blank can tend to twist.

Spiral wraps feature guides spaced out not only down the rod blank, but also around it. This specific guide train takes the line around the rod blank in order to accomodate for the rod twisting downward, especially against larger species offshore.
Although this style of fishing made it popular, many rod builders now enjoy incorporating a spiral wrapped rod to their boat's arsenal!
For a demo on guide spacing, to tips for underwraps, and tricks for applying finish, watch the episode above and learn all about Spiral Wraps.

In around 1985, I built a custom rod by with Fuji SIC guildes placing in spiral way. With this video, I want to have my age back to that time. This is very excellent video with all informations of placing the spiral guides in rod building. Thank you.
Spiral wrapped my BFS rod to stop tip twist, best decision ever!
What a great tutorial, thank you! "If you want it done right do it yourself" never rang more true. I've never built a rod, having only replaced a handful of guides, tips etc. but may just give it a go. It's disappointing to see even some of my expensive rods that look beautiful but have the spines off and line hitting the blank because of the wrong guides/number of guides with improper spacing. After watching this it's such a simple matter to get right you have to wonder why so many times it isn't and if picking a rod off the rack you're left checking the spine to make your selection. I have only one spiral boat rod and really love it, it does make winching up big fish noticeably easier.
Do you guys do Rod Reviews? Been seeing spiral wrapped guides more and more these days for bass fishing and would be cool to have you guys get a few, test and talk about them!
Fancy seeing you on a random video I'm watching. I'm spiral wrapping a BFS bass rod, which I'll post on the BFS sub when I'm done.
@@TheApostateTapir hotness! Sounds like a fun rod project
LOL I own 8 custom spiral wrapped rods and I love them all. One is my shark rod and the other 7 are my fresh water rods
I actually have a custom rod built in 1995 by a friend, it has a Roberts wrap on it.
Building a slow pitch Bushido 150 gram and it’s definitely having a spiral wrap. Using microwave 12/6 to 5.5 to tip. G2 cc seat carbon grips carbon fighting butt. Epic!
I have been thinking of doin one we're r u finding the blanks
@@semperhigh0311 My best friend owns American Tackle. I’m getting a heavy prototype from him soon to play with.
Isn't the Spiral Wrap supposed to go on the opposite side for the reel handle to counteract the torque of cranking the reel handle?
yes
Well, that pre-Black Friday 15% off deal was a bust... this video was posted on the 19th of November, but the promo already ended on the 11th
Mud Hole are you guys doing another promo deal for Black Friday?
Hey guys, can you do a slow pitch jigging rod with a spiral wrap some day? I’d like to build one but need a little visual help with guide placement. I’m also using a left handed Avet Sx reel!
Great talk guys. Really appreciate the more advanced tips. You could spend hours on message boards and come out more confused. I'm like you guys about fresh water and inshore but i really see the need for acid wrap on big game conventional and jigging but it seems made for slow pitch jigging where the parabolic is pronounced and pushed to the limits of physics.
Good work.
I realize this is old now but I think a spiral wrap would be perfect for a bobber doggin rod. I prefer convetional reels for this but tip wraps on a 10'6" when your wading can be a real pita. If youre a salmon fisherman in the NW you will know exactly what I mean🙃
On Ben’s Rod, what color numbers for the thread. Love the green gray combo...
Yes thank you right side is the right retrieve 31:46
I have seen in a youtube video, an underslung conventional reel being used which I believe if, this type of reel were to become popular, would eliminate the need for a spiral wrapped rod.
Great job guys! Love Pat's build too. What grip is that on Pat's SJ842? Also, where can you get gold guides?
What means are you using on a spiral wrap to determine other than 0 degrees and 180 degrees? How are you finding the 60 degrees and 120 degrees locations? is there a gauge or can you use a protractor or some other source/tool?
You guys should do a live ice rod build
Those are not transition guides they are Bumper guides. The only guide that transitions is the stripper because that is where the line begins to go around the rod. Also, though its not that big a deal, I will do the spiral to the left on a right handed person and to the right on a left handed person because the dominate way they will cast. The handle on the right should also go to the left due to when you set your rod down it will be on its handle because that will expose it to the least amount of debris on the ground and the bumpers will not be laying on the ground where they can get more easily damaged. The bottom 180 guides will always be on the ground no mater what side you wrap to.
Hola Soy Mauro de Argentina! Podrian ser traducidos en Español los videos? Lo agradecería y mucho! Abrazo!!
Building a nearshore rod and I am looking for some all steel guides medium to heavy duty one piece two foot thanks for the help
Was wondering if the American tackle microwave guides would be beneficial in any way or if they’re not necessary for a heavy bass rod. I am going with a 808 north fork neo and a 765 neo and plan on running the spirals on it. If you have any suggestions I’d really appreciate it. I love the blacked out light as possible rods even though they’re heavy blanks. Ty
This guy in the blue shirt has it backwards. Right handers are supposed to reel with the left hand. Why on God's green Earth that right handed fisherman insist on reeling in with their right hands, only to switch hands, is beyond me. If you are reeling in CORRECTLY, and you are right handed, you should be reeling with your left hand. I am Left Handed and I reel with my Right Hand, which is the CORRECT way to reel. Furthermore, if you are using a spiral wrap method, west coast style, YOU WANT YOUR GUIDES TO SPIRAL OPPOSITE OF YOUR REEL HAND FOR **BALANCE**. If the force on the line going through the guides, is on the same side as your reeling hand, you're going to be fighting that torque with bigger fish. If all you fish is small fish, you don't realize that there is a performance reasoning for the guide's directional spiral.
Should have had a discussion on spiral wraps on slow pitch jigging rods
@@sarsiwala good subject. saw a bunch at ICAST yesterday.
Right hanfers definitely are not supposed to reel with left hand. If u ever caught a fish over 20 pounds you'll wish u had ur right hand cranking on the reel. A fish over 100 will kill u. Try fishing offshore for once . You want your strong hand reeling with your weak hand holding your rod.. bass fishing it doesn't matter. I am right handed and reel with my right hand in all situations except for a spinning reel. It takes less than a second to cast and switch hands with my lure about to touch the water when I'm casting for bass. But off shore. U will never win a battle with your weak hand. A 30lb yellowtail will tear you up fishing your weak hand. But give it a shot.
@@RLbacker19 I fish yellowtail all the time. I caught bluefin last year as well. I always reel in with my right hand, I'm a left hander.
I'm pretty smart. I think. However this video made me confident that I'm smart.
All make sense here guy
How about inshore fishing Fluke / black sea bass / scup and blackfish I’m in NY would it improve hook set
On a saltwater CRB Jigging blank, would the butt guide be the same distance from the reel on a spiral wrapped rod (0, 60, 120, 180) as a typical conventional layout?
Mud Hole Thank you for the response! 👍🏻
So you started to address metal guides contacting a carbon-fiber blank under stress versus contacting a silk/nylon thread underwrap but you didn't finish. So I'm building my first fly rod and have been in debate with my cohorts in the Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Group regarding this issue. Granted, I used emory cloth to refinish the semi-serrated edges of the stock PacBay guide feet. (I just didn't like what I was seeing out of the box) I was thinking that if there were any unsmooth edges left on those feet at all, I didn't want that in contact with my silk threads. Thus, no underwrapping beneath the guides. Granted, I'll not be horsing around any Goliath Grouper under bridges. Still, I want my first fly rod build to last a few seasons.
Where do you folks come down on this issue?
@@MudHoleCustomTackle Thanks, Chris. Good to get some feedback and reassurance from the 'experts'.

So I can come back to it later
Can you tell us which grip is on the white rod?
1:01:46 - Uhh, yes. I believe you are wrong. I happen to love mine, and I personally wouldn’t care if it looked like a piece of rusty junk iron as long as it feels and works like the fine tuned instrument it is. But, for each his own.
I’m all new want build one
CRB con ver jigging
Guide kit say 8-40
I’m completely lost brother do I need to by 2 extra 40 and are all the other guides 8 can’t tell from pictures
Thanks
How would guide spacing be done on a wrap, like this??
Same question
cool .. for me one fishing rod and reel .. greetings from Indonesia.
喋ってばかりでなくてさっさと実践してくれないかな。
Terrible explanation of how to spiral wrap.
Isn't it guides go opposite of handle?
