      @Issan Cali Reject They could have gotten way more than that. In 2016, my building decided to kick us all out because they wanted to upgrade it significantly. They offered us $7k. 29 tenants total. We were able to get $20K apiece after we took them to court. We never went to court, they settled. These poor people should have done it when they got the first letter. I feel sad that nobody presented this to them. People in these comments thinks this is the city of San Francisco. It's not. It's the city of South San Francisco in San Mateo County. That county has tons of tenant resources for eviction defense that would have helped them for free. It's the Bay Area, they need all the money they can get.

    I live on my sailing boat and if a marina asked me to leave and offered 10k to do so I'd say where do I sign. I think the boaters have been treated more than fairly, we live on boats for a reason so we can take our homes wherever we go so to complain that you have to move your home is a little puzzling to me but that might have something to do with my next point, but the only thing I can sympathize with them on is finding a marina that accepts livaboards, my trick is to just pull up pay my fees be really nice and helpful to the staff be super tidy and super quiet and then when they finally realise you live on your boat 99% of the time they will let it slide, it's worked everywhere I go, but if you ring a marina and ask if they accept livaboards they'll say NO 99% of the time.

      One would think that, but just how many marinas offer live aboard monthly/quarterly/yearly leases in that area. I would also bet the government stipulates the percentage of live aboard slips to the available slips.
      So if they are retired on a fixed income it may just be next to impossible for them to find a slip elsewhere. That will mean they will end up at anchor then face the issues that come with that.

    • @2olvets443
      @2olvets443 Рік тому +2

      @@seanrhone5306 Exactly. It's wrong for people to be told they can't "live" aboard a boat by any government. Not the only thing our government oversteps on. The government here says they have nothing to do with it and it is the owners of the Private Marina.
      There are many that do live aboard but are on the move around constantly, anchoring here and there, and do put into transient docks for a few nights to a month or so. But that takes quite a bit of money. So the elite yet again have privilege.
      Sometimes it is best to have so many live aboard slips in a Marina as they provide a little bit of security. If they see something they are likely to call the cops. Even Marinas that have security fencing and gates are not all that safe as the area still accessible from the water.

    The real problem isn’t Kilroy. Our issue is all the regulatory agencies and their unelected bureaucrats. This includes the Bay Conservation and Development Commission, the San Mateo Harbor District, Sacramento County, the EPA, etc., even our state government. Boats are not classified as vehicles or homes, but rather as “fill” under the McAteer-Petris Act, and this is indicative of the general attitude. An arbitrary limit of 10% per marina is placed on liveaboards and enforced with the full power of the state.
    This is not about pollution as all vessels are inspected by the harbor authorities, and can be inspected at will by the US Coast Guard (mine has been, and they were always very professional and courteous) to assure that they cannot dump waste. (We wouldn’t anyway because the marina is our “front yard” and anyone dumping anything would soon become the focus of many irate neighbors.) The plethora of fish, birds, even jellyfish and porpoises in the marina is evidence of this.
    It is not about congestion: marinas can easily be 50% populated without problems with noise or facilities.
    It is not about safety, as there are heavy steel locking gates, and liveaboards know everyone on their pier and watch everything. We are always there for each other, be it medical emergencies, mechanical problems, or just needing a ride. We are a tightly knit community reminiscent of small towns in days gone by.
    In sum, all this is about is preventing boaters from using the waters, waters which belong to all of us and which we have a right to use.
    As you can see from the video, over half of us have been driven out. Our 78 year old neighbor who is disabled, on a fixed income, and just lost her husband is reduced to sleeping on someone’s living room couch. An elderly retired man is facing a solo voyage to Mexico and a total uprooting of his life just to find a place which will tolerate liveaboards. A fully disabled neighbor living on $1,200 a month disability got told by a social worker that all they could do is put her in a homeless shelter in the San Francisco Tenderloin. She can barely take care of herself, and wouldn’t last a month there.
    Please help us. Contact your elected representatives, and let them know how you feel.

    I have to start by saying that I have no experience with Marina properties in the CA area. If it is like the rest of the Country, mainly the South and East Coast, the “pressure” on existing marina owners is immense.
    Marina owners are being pressured from all sides to sell-out and go away. It’s not about greed, it’s about not going bankrupt or losing what has been a family business for generations. If this sounds like family farms, you wouldn’t be wrong.
    Running and MAINTAINING a marina may vary from location to location, but it takes a-lot of manpower, hard work and money. Every year government agencies dictate stricter compliance and legal red tape. This can come from the EPA, DNR and local authorities. At the same time, what was once “cheap” land has become top dollar real estate. Even if they have no desire to sell, in many cases tax rates have quadrupled in recent years due to nearby condos and hotels. Insurance rates have also likely went thru the roof.
    Local Governments are also to blame. Many times they do not want “liveAboards” in the local marinas. They may ban them outright or may impose additional fees on marinas that allow them.
    Lastly, I have to put some blame on the liveAboards themselves: Some (not all) purchase boats that are in need of serious maintenance and are no longer seaworthy with the idea they would make a cheap place to live, while tied to a dock or in a marina slip. These boats deteriorate year after year to the point they are not able to move under their own power and in some cases may capsize and create an environmental risk. Boats require constant maintenance and upkeep to keep them in decent shape, most (not all) liveaboards do not spend the time or money on this maintenance. Many times they will walk away from their boat and leave a sinking, rotting boat for the marina to deal with.
    For all of the above, the idea of living on a boat long-term, is NOT a plan for anyone, unless you also own the property where the boat is docked or moored. Of course, if your boat is well maintained and you are able to travel from marina to marina throughout the seasons and can pay seasonal rates, this might be an option. Just be prepared to move after 30, 60 or 90 days and make sure each marina understands and allows you to live aboard.
    As for rights, you have no rights when you are renting a slip in a marina. Read your contract, they can demand you leave at any time for a wide variety of reasons. Several months notice and a “moving bonus” is a courtesy you should take and be thankful for. Quit acting like renting has special rights that do not exist.

    • @operator0
      @operator0 Рік тому +1

      I don't know how it is on the West coast, but there are plenty of places on the East coast that one can anchor their boat almost indefinitely, which is free, if a bit risky. Less risky, but still fairly cheap is the option to rent a mooring ball.
      Of course, these two options present other challenges, like obtaining a way to go ashore, and the ability to make enough electricity to run the boat. Sewage is also a problem in most cases, although the dirty little secret is that those who chose to anchor or moor will often just illegally pump it overboard at night.
      Getting a boat from San Fran to the Keys isn't going to be cheap, no matter how you do it.

      @christopherwoycke1959 Рік тому +1

      Nope, not at all. I work in the commercial marine repair industry. When a big boat needs to come-in for serious repairs it can be handled at a marina with haul out facilities or boatyards with haul out capabilities. Due to the reasons I listed above these places are disappearing like crazy. Those of us that work on boats have to constantly check to make sure the marina or boatyard we used months ago are still there and open for business. I'm not sure this has anything to do with the marina in the story, just saying there are reasons some marinas are getting rid of long-term slip holders. In many cases an old-time marina is forced out of business, new owners come in, build high-end condo's on the land and offer a few boat slips to residents who now own the condos. Some hotel chains are also doing this. There are also some live aboard boaters that have pushed their "welcome" way past the breaking point with run-down boats that may sink at any moment, unsanitary conditions (pumping raw sewage into the harbor) and are an eyesore to anyone with a maintained, functioning boat.

    Vacant properties like this are worth more vacant in resale value, that's why trailer parks, apartments and HOAs are vacating residents so they can sell the property for more to redevelop the land. Properties filled with tenants used to be worth more over a decade ago, not anymore because real estate is controlled by Wall Street and international investment firms and continues that way for the last 14 years. That's because investors can borrow and either make a profit or go bust but either way the top executives walk away wealthier because they're company went bankrupt not them personally.

    You can't just put a boat on a trailer and put it in an RV park/resort space.
    There are gonna be more boats being left to drift,sunken,dragged onto shore,or abandoned on the side of the road and in neighboring areas in the coming months because there are more boats than trailers and storage rates and rents have already skyrocketed in the past several years since the pandemic in areas that were already unaffordable to most people in these areas. $10000 won't even pay 3 months rent in most of these areas.

      Anchoring out is definitely an option throughout the Puget Sound. There aren’t quite enough protected bays to keep everyone happy, particularly in the summer, but it is feasible, particularly in the southern waters. Anchorage in some bays is limited to three days consecutively, so move on to the next. Having shore facilities close by is the key. Water, groceries, fuel, laundry etc. Anacortes, Roche Harbor, Friday Harbor, Olympia, Winslow, Poulsbo, and Gig Harbor meet those standards

    I work in South San Francisco right near the Marina. I honestly have no idea what the property owner plans to do with the land. If there’s already a marina built there, what are they planning to replace it with? There isn’t a whole lot of access or infrastructure there, just a pedestrian/bike path. It’s not like The Cove, where it is close to major roads and the huge biotech companies. Heck, I have to bike 15 min through stroads and poorly planned suburbanized industrial sprawl from the nearest train station to get there. What is the point of building something new there if there’s not good access? The small marina that’s already there is appropriate for the surrounding area.

    The Story was well intended but, missed a few things
    1- We were assured in a meeting with the previous owner Greenland USA that the Marina would continue in its state as it was with Live Aboard and Slip holding tenants with little disturbance during construction/Development of this 42 acre site which included the marina. The city representatives from SSF In the meeting where Greenland assured us seemed to want the development to go forward and our approval, thus the assurances. Later that year Kilroy realty bought the site for 308 M, that is the entire Bio Science development site, 42 acres, from Greenland USA who Purchased the 42 acre site from Shorenstein SKS for 145M in 2016(?) in 2007, Shorenstein had purchased the site for 71-85M from Shelton. Her is the point, Kilroy purchased the site, Kilroy also had Public outreach meetings which we attended but, they all concerned phase 1 of the project, no meetings were held concerning Phase 2 which involves the Marina at any public meeting. Information was constantly requested. Neither the city of SSF or Kilroy commented on our requests for information except to say they had no knowledge of any pending plans for eviction.
    We were misled intentionally. The BCDC determines the number of resident Berths allowed.
    We paid good money and kept the site safe during residency. BCDC will not transfer our "Legal Liveaboard status to other marinas in the Bay or increase percentage of liveaboard occupancy
    That is what we are fighting for. We are being dumped, we live on water, low impact, low income housing that will be displaced with no return
