I agree...saw him in Fall River, MA as well as Raleigh, NC and both times I was blown away. His band is awesome as well. Having seen some pretty great guitarists (Eric Clapton, Steve Miller, The Allman Bros. and Neil Young) live, I can definitely say this guy deserves a place amongst the greats....keep rockin' Johnny!
I think that Johnny A has become my single favorite Guitar Player. I just love his music. His tone is amazing. I mean I would hate to pick one guitarist over all the others that I love to listen to, but I find that I play more of his stuff on my iPod than any other guitar player. Esp. anything from "Sometime Tuesday Morning."
He wanted one guitar that could get the woodiness and hollow tone of the 295 but yet still scream like his Les Pauls and do everything in between. Johnny and Gibson collaborated very closely on bringing to life Johnny's vision of that guitar. It was the combination of both Johnny's skill as a guitarist/musician and his skill for recognizing and achieving great tone which Gibson recognized early on.
I'll listen to it later tonight, I'm in school atm. But, you have to remember that it all comes down to personal preference. Personally I like 'em both, but Johnny A is just pure genius in my ears. If you don't like it... Well- You're missing out, that's for sure.
Actually, Johnny A's guitar was not a guitar "named after" him because of his skill. It was named after him because he made so many suggestions to the original design that Gibson realized they had a guitar that was different enough to be named something else. Hence, the Johnny Signature model. There's an article about it somewhere. But he's great. He deserves a signature model for sure. The sound he gets live is amazing, which is a treat when so many live bands just sound like loud mud.
His collaboration with Gibson Produced one awsome guitar, Iv'e played one just once and if i had the money i would own one in a heartbeat, Oh well maybe one day... nice clip of him .....
I wonder if this specific performance of these songs is recorded for sale as an album. I saw him over the summer in CT after hearing "Another Life" randomly come on my 5th Dimension Pandora station. Fell in love with his art.
What hands :) Listen how he can make his amp break up or sound clean as a whistle just with his right hand technique at 0.05 to 0.30. hes giving a clinic
This song sounds like a 'come and get me' message to Donald Fagan & Walter Becker. The 'Hey Nineteen' era jazz chops chord sounds are all there. Johnny A in Steelky Dan... why not? He likes playing good songs, they like using top players....
i was at the manchester one too! he was amazing! especially his hendrix medley! did you go and meet him inbetween the sets? i did, he's such a nice guy
wow, this is so much better than "Oh Yeah" - I read the wikipedia article about Johnny (with all about Oh Yeah being #1 on the radio), watched "Oh Yeah", and was rather disappointed. But this song is great! What really annoys the crap out of me is the lagging video.... :/
awww no damn i didn't know ya could meet him!! that would have been great. I hadn't heard of the band before, but Johnny A were almost as good as Satch himself... almost
I see there are three guitars in the back, he said in his interview he didn't want to keep changing guitars thru the set, wanted to have one guitar that did everything he wanted to play. Wonder what the others are there for....tunings? I have a spare around for my gigs, true, but....anyone know??
@fpspero1 Not even close (except for the devil horns)! The Trini was a hollowbody whereas this was designed from the ground up by Johnny (& Gibson luthiers) and is a carved mahogany body with a laminate Maple top. The pickups are different, the head is different, neck shape, etc... Again, not even close. I own #48 and it's an incredible guitar!
Just my opinion, but Johnny A took up the mantle dropped by Danny Gatton so long ago. The man has incredible chops and tone, and can play anything. He rules.
I can agree to that to a point (listen to Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne" for a good idea of Carlton's style), but I'm not knocking anyone on style or technique. Purely tone.
Gibson Johnny A signature.....check the Gibson website for info....there's also some interesting interview vids with Johnny A about designing the guitar, playing, influences, etc.
+Steve Parkinsson He has a custom Gibson hollow body that can be yours for $5,000 :) I had to look it up after watching this. He is freakin amazing and his tone is Goddamn superb to das maximum lol.
There is also a more affordable Epiphone version of the Johnny A custom that can be found on the used market. They had a limited edition run a few years ago.
I understand what you're saying. I was just addressing his comment that I don't play guitar. I'm certainly not very skilled. I'm just not a fan of Johnny A's tone. This video inspired me to pick up an album and it's a bit better, but I have loyalties to Larry Carlton.
Oh come on, they are "only" 3!! Lol. Well I think he has them for free or something like that because they look pretty unique, as he asked for certain specs. And he designed the model, so that should mean something right
i'm guessing since it was a pro video shoot, they were spares or eye candy or both. pretty sure he just plays one guitar at most gigs- pretty sure there's a spare handy 'just in case.' like Jeff Beck, only JB has his #2 (and maybe #3) strat(s) off stage). again, just guessin
I was being sarcastic my friend. Still he has a hell of alot larger collection of footpedals than i use. I too have been playing a very long time, i know what im talking about.
The fact is that their playing styles are vastly different. Larry Carlton (at least by what I've seen, which admittedly isn't too much.) is more of a single note playing kinda guy, while Johnny A relies more on chord melodies.
That's not actually true. Johnny has been associated with Gibson since 1994. He was approached by Gibson about his signature model because of the stir his first solo album (released in 2000) was creating and the fact that he used Gibson guitars to create his sound. He was not completely satisfied with the guitars he was using live, at the time, to try and replicate the sound of his ES 295, which was the lion's share of the first album's tone.
I'll listen to it later tonight, I'm in school atm. But, you have to remember that it all comes down to personal preference. Personally I like 'em both, but Johnny A is just pure genius in my ears. If you don't like it... Well- You're missing out, that's for sure.
fantastic work
went to school with this guy in 71...great music in boston then
ive seen Johnny a couple of times, listened to theses songs hundreds of times and still love them...waiting for some new material and the tour

Assign this performance to history!! Should be a mandatory study in music classes everywhere!

What a gorgeous instrument.
the best guitar tone I've ever heard!
NOPE.
I'm not sure I love the tone & crispy OD of the Marshall amp, but Johnny & his guitar are awesome.

I really dig this song. I'm looking forward to catching Johnny A. in concert next month. So inspiring!

Wow guy- I have listened to and tryed to play guitar for many years and you are as good as it gets!
This guy just has it!
Johnny A's guitar tone is to die for... and his playin' ain't bad either :D
This was brilliant!
I saw him live supporting Satch on his Super Colossal tour. This guy is amazing.
The tone is his own!
His guitars always look so well taken care of..

pour moi toujours superbe ,un grand plaisir ( michel ) drome, france

GOD THATS SICK!

i agree. i saw him in like 2001, and the hendrix medley rocks.
The best. Get his album "get inside" . It blows all todays mordern guitarists away! and see him live, its amazing.
buena tio, EXCELENTE.
Cool!

I saw him at bournemouth with JS, i thought he blew him off the stage! Great tone, timing, phrasing, the lot.
Get his latest album, its great.
awww no damn i didn't know ya could meet him!! that would have been great. I hadn't heard of the band before, but Johnny A were almost as good as Satch himself... almost

@Yepiz10 yep, except that lots of guitarists couldn't play this, and Carlos is one of them :-)
Хорошо! Солячок клёво сделан!!!
@clydeman; it's a trini lopez with johnnya updates
@fpspero1 Not even close (except for the devil horns)! Клёво мужик бацает! Приятный соляк!
@XMathis ........... Me too :-)
very crisp
sshhhhh....I'm listening
para mi es la gibson mas bonita de los ultimos40 años 6000 tienen la culpa
@XMathis ....especially once you've seen him up close !!!!!!!
Just my opinion, but Johnny A took up the mantle dropped by Danny Gatton so long ago. The man has incredible chops and tone, and can play anything. He rules.
what are those other guitars behind him, johnnys b and c?
If you're talking about the guitar it's the Johnny A signature. When my wife allows me to buy another guitar that's the one I'm gonna get.
I can agree to that to a point (listen to Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne" for a good idea of Carlton's style), but I'm not knocking anyone on style or technique. Purely tone.
Could someone tell me what model he's using?
Gibson Johnny A signature.....check the Gibson website for info....there's also some interesting interview vids with Johnny A about designing the guitar, playing, influences, etc.
What kind of guitar is that? Sounds awsome
+Steve Parkinsson He has a custom Gibson hollow body that can be yours for $5,000 :) I had to look it up after watching this. He is freakin amazing and his tone is Goddamn superb to das maximum lol.

I like how's he's got a rack of guitars, and they're all Johnny A Signatures. ($6000/a piece!)
Oh come on, they are "only" 3!! Lol. Well I think he has them for free or something like that because they look pretty unique, as he asked for certain specs. And he designed the model, so that should mean something right

Man does not live by shred alone, mrmagew!
I was being sarcastic my friend. Still he has a hell of alot larger collection of footpedals than i use. I too have been playing a very long time, i know what im talking about.

word up. sounds like Robben
If you're really 32, I've been playing since you were a teenager. :)
Johnny A? and his complete name?
sounds like santana song :)
Could be good if he played through a cleaner rig and turned off the compression. Look up Mr. 335 if you want distorted jazz. :D
For some reason I have trouble getting into this guy.
That's not actually true. Johnny has been associated with Gibson since 1994. He was approached by Gibson about his signature model because of the stir his first solo album (released in 2000) was creating and the fact that he used Gibson guitars to create his sound.

If you think about the harmony and not worry about licks...you will be able to generate your own ideas and you won't need to copy anymore.
I think that might have more to do with his large collection of footpedals there lol.
I think he calls himself Johnny A he's not known by his last name...
is it just me....or does he resemble Prince??
idk....maybe its the goatee...
Apparently, you do. It's just my opinion. I promise I can get a better tone with similar gear, but I'm probably not as good as he. :)
i thought that was Benecio Del Toro
Not his complete name, He calls himself Johnny A because his last name is Greek and extremely hard to pronounce by his own account.
@MHeardOnBass For the record, it's Antonopoulos, not really that hard.
nice playing but.. odd?.. facial expressions and beard for that matter
I'll listen to it later tonight, I'm in school atm. But, you have to remember that it all comes down to personal preference. Personally I like 'em both, but Johnny A is just pure genius in my ears. If you don't like it... Well- You're missing out, that's for sure.
