I've been buying Britannias almost exclusively lately. When they are on sale (which seems to be very often) they are usually less than 1% more premium per oz. My last purchase for a relatively small order was $3.14 over spot per ounce.

True, I love Britannias! Still, unless they are on sale, or any other minted coin I stick with generic rounds. The same applies for gold, I stick to bars as the minted coins have serious premiums and good luck recouping that when selling.

I started gathering silver in about 1973. I sold most after the 1980 peak. At that time we didn't have silver eagles, but just generic rounds. Premiums were not so high over spot for physical. In 2004, I started accumulating again. I was interested in eagles, Morgans, and Peace dollars. In 2014, I changed my strategy to seek lowest premium over spot. Between 2014 and 2020, I could get rolls of silver quarters or dimes for 49 cents over spot with SD Bullion and a few other dealers. In 2017, I could get 40% Silver Kennedy's at Apmex for zero over spot, and I picked up a kaboodle of $10 rolls around $37 each. Now, in 2022, those 40% Kennedys are selling at about $3 over spot. Meanwhile, silver 10 oz bars are just over $2 over spot at places such as Monument Metals. Well, I still seek the lowest premium over spot. And one more benefit.... Canada's Turd-o regime may try to freeze a bank account, but they cannot see your phyzz stack and they cannot freeze your phyzz stack. You know the saying, lost in a boating accident. ( Humor ).

That's exactly right. There's a very good chance that a lot silver coins will exchange in the black market and if most people are indeed ignorant about minted PMs, they will always go with the most marketable coins first. Once these PM start circulating as money remember how money functions. The best ones are where people have the most confidence in. This will be Gresham's Law in reverse: good money chasing out bad.

Great Information... I do recall watching your earlier video and it really opened my eyes. Ever since that original video, I have kept my eyes not only on the type of silver one is acquiring, but also the premiums, and specifically how much of it you can expect to get back when it has to be sold. I do like sovereign coins as I think they do provide a little more comfort in knowing that you have good genuine government issues and backed silver and gold. Frequently, if you shop all the well known online dealers, one can pick up a tube of silver Britannias for almost the same price, and often times cheaper than buffalo rounds. I have done this myself recently. I guess they were just low on buffalo stock, but had lots of britannia's to move. Thanks for the spreadsheet, I'll definitely use it. Also, based on the tax issues, I guess one should keep good records of what they are buying, when they are buying it, spot price and premium at the time of the purchase, dates, qty etc. Can you suggest a good application that's free or cheap that can keep that info all in one place? It would be nice if it would also keep current pricing to show real time profit or loss on each purchase. Thanks again for the videos.

I watched your video a second time! And this is my second comment….the more I learn about this, the more I think I should stick to “junk” or Constitutional silver. Now…I’m considering selling all my Morgan’s and Peace dollars….just to buy some silver, and maybe some gold. A “collection is a collection, by any other name”! My late father was a big time collector….building a beautiful collection…..buying Morgan’s and Peace dollars by the rolls, as far back as the mid-1960s, amassing a nice collection. One day, when we were discussing (probably while sipping scotch!!). Noting how amazed I was, at the value, he said “It’s only worth what someone is willing to pay”. I recall, more than one of his rare coins was worth close to several hundred dollars, as in a rare silver dollar that he paid only $50.00++ for 30 years ago! But at the end of the day, is still just worth “spot”….except to a knowledgeable collector. I’m unsure what to do, how to proceed…except to proceed very very slowly! And my collection of silver crowns that I built up in high school….I know I’m sitting in the “cat bird’s seat”…worse places to be, I guess.

Not to disagree, but to offer a ''beware'' notation. China has many counterfeit artists that are quite good at producing pot metal eagles and plate them with silver. Nowdays, they are also counterfeiting postage stamps as well. Facebook is fraught with ads for deeply discounted eagles, gold, and postage stamps. Imagine getting a silver eagle for ''just'' $19.95, or a half eagle gold for ''just'' $79.95, or a roll of postage stamps for ''just'' $39. All are fakes. And finally, a jeweler's scale is essential. There are those fools who have purchased fake gold or silver and are set on trying to pass it along as the real stuff.

There is also the numismatic value which can be hard to quantify but it pays (literally) to keep the bullion coins in mint condition. Silver Seeker - you hit the ball outta da park on this. I stopped buying SAE's when the tube price hit over 500 USD, and changed my Silver stacking philosophy - switching to10 ounce bars and tubes of "brand" generics. The last couple of years, I only nibbled on Silver - a few coins here and there with my Gold orders. I took advantage of the APMEX Black Friday sales and bought bought tubes of their generic rounds and 10-ounce bars when they were at or under 25 per ounce. This works better for me than buying a little at a time. The last couple of years have been a nightmare for the average stacker - but if you play the dips and hit the sales - you can buy at pre-COVID prices. Eagles used to be fairly inexpensive pre- 2020, but they are no longer worth buying more than 1-2 for a collection. I switched my Gold and my Silver to British - just to keep from paying the ridiculous premiums. I'm glad you have posted this - people really need to wake up!

I think bc of what I’ve learned in this video I need to balance my collection and stack more between premium coins and rounds. I love to collect Eagles for just that reason, collectibility, but I’ve also always enjoyed knowing it is a hobby that will go up in value. This data proves if I want to stack some silver solely for the purpose of increasing value, I need to pick up more rounds! Thanks a lot for the lesson. New to this and it helps a lot.

When i first started buying silver, I bought monster boxes of eagles and leafs. I looked at my stack and thought i was king of the world. Then when I wanted to put my 20% down on a house and had no other money, i went to sell. Uttt Ohhhh. I took a bath on the eagles and leafs and made out with the junk rounds and 90%. I now have a lot of money so don't have to sell anytime soon. I ONLY buy 90% and 40% junk and 100 ounce bars. BTW, 40% junk (these are half dollars from 1965 to 1969 are the absolute best buy. I buy them UNDER spot all day long from sellers). I caught a drop lost week for 100 OZ bars at a major online seller for $1.69 over spot. So I got many 100 OZ bars delivered for $22 per ounce (that's $2,200 per bar). Don't buy premium. Buy junk and big bars when price dips. You will win. Good video here!

Great video! Perfect explanation. I think this kind of goes to show that buying government rounds aren’t the best idea but there’s a few things we must consider. Government rounds are more recognized and may be more accepted meaning easier to sell. Where as generic rounds may be seen as easier to fake and not as widely accepted. There is also a collectibility factor that comes into play that also lessens the value you may get out of your coins. I think if you’re in it for investment only. Generic rounds are the way to go. But if you want to actually collect and also stack then a bit of both is nice.

I've come to similar conclusions, but the premiums on Silver Eagles are nasty (I'm a penurious Scot) so I go for second best with Sunshine Minting rounds (U.S. producer) with their security indicia on every round. Yes, you have to buy Sunshine's "Mint Mark" reader ($18) which reveals the word "VALID" in the indicia, but, should someone question the authenticity of the round, I'll show that 'validation' (also with a sunburst in the 90 degree orientation) with whomever I'm bartering. They'll be on their own when they pass the silver on to someone else (I'll not be parting with my 'decoder'), but at least they can tell the tale from whence comes their own confidence.

    • @Leifler
      @Leifler Рік тому

I think the barter movie level collapse is largely a farce. And there will always be some industry, there have been global supply chains and networks since extremely ancient times.
More recently-ish they've come to realize how trade between South and North America was far more robust than once thought.
The fact is that whatever the prevailing currency is, you'll be able to get to SOMEONE who knows. The reason is that if there is money to be had, someome will show up. Period.
The world is never "that" crazy, and even when it is, some fool will be riding his wagon across the sketchy roads to make trades between the relevant parties and collect a commission.
The real question will be if there is a government rollback or not. So when you read the concept that people in like 1900 would live on a dollar a week, that's about the value of a Silver Eagle. Given the lack of taxes, insurances, insulation, energy, monthly bills, and the living on food bare staples, it's a bit like renting someone's shed with no utilities and lighting a candle and starting a fire in a wood stove, and eating by using flour and barely making it week to week. That's not far off $20-30 silver. No car, no insurance, no utilities, no eating out, no phones etc.
So the point is that the "dollar" face value on the Eagle is close-ish. And so, if the government ever had to go back to real money, a Silver Eagle MIGHT be the defacto real dollar. It is still technically legal tender of 1USD. And it is what 1USD should be worth if not for devaluation.
In such an event the Eagle would be maximum superiority.
However, if some form of freak events occur to where the government had no real weight, or didn't do this, and silver is Silver, it won't be worth more per se. Because if the trade network is acquiring Silver for melt, essentially, then, they aren't going to pay a premium.
However, if there is no collapse and government coins maintain their premiums, then you can sell at a better rate. But even this is a bit of a gamble, as the premium on eagles today is at an all time high over spot. The question is if that will go up, or settle back down. I bought eagles at $21 spot a good while ago and I think the premium was that they cost like $24. These days you're paying what? 30-35$ for hype? That's a real debate there on if you're going to be able to maintain that valuation. If it settles to historic levels and you pay $35 for 21spot, then if the premium drops and spot goes to 27, you might still lose.
With generics there is less questions there, you don't get paid the premium, but you also don't pay the premium.

This is an interesting video for sure and I am glad that I watched it. That said, however, I prefer ASEs and Maples for both gold and silver stacking.
I love their look and look at my stack from time to time with enjoyment. I don't care for the rounds, even if they are cheaper. But most of my stack
was created when Eagles were $2.50-$3.00 over spot and spot was $14-$15 an oz. But for those who have started stacking recently or are just
starting now, this is a good video on how to get more ounces for the fiat they have. Good job on that. But this does make me wonder whether the
rounds will be acceptable in any sort of barter situation. I have a good amount of US 90% silver pre-1965 coins that should be good for barter.
They are recognizable and people will quickly learn of their silver content and value for trades. An ASE looks a great deal like a Walking Liberty
half dollar, only larger and shinier, so should be easily recognized as well. I don't go in for collectibles much but did get 40 of the 2017 1st strike
MS 70 Eagles as a long-term investment. If they become more valuable, that will be good. If not, well, they are still beautiful slabbed Eagles.

The best video I’ve seen on this subject! Thank you so much for doing this. The thing that doesn’t show up on the spreadsheet that investors in other assets is the compounding effect. By putting in more money up front with the premium silver you’re already deeper in the hole. That immediately sets you behind in the race. The thing that would be interesting to see in the future is whether the dollar value of the premium goes up with inflation. For instance if you bought silver eagles when they were $4.50 an ounce the premium you’d get now is actually double what you paid. What if the premiums in the future are $20? It’s not implausible if silver is $50/oz.

Generic still worked better but only slightly. The difference ended up being less than $100 between rounds and Eagles. Moral of the story is: the selling delta between between buy/sell premiums are the key. Nice job in pointing this out. My intention was to have relatives discover them when cleaning out my house. I wrote on the bags “you can’t take it with you” I melted some of it and cast bullets, silver coins don’t make good bullets too light but pretty.

Great video. I have heard from some coin shops that it will not matter what it is 1 oz is 1 oz and spot only once it gets to $50 or $100. I am for more silver at the least cost.

Ten Commandments for Buying Gold and Silver:
    I. Always take delivery.
II. Never buy premium if you can avoid it.
III. Buy bullion for business, numismatics for fun.
IV. Buy silver first, then gold.
    V. Buy small gold first, then large.
VI. Never buy exotic coins or modern rarities or anything you don't understand.
    VII. Know your dealer.
VIII. What governments can't find, they can't steal.
IX. Never swap bullion coins for U.S. $20 gold pieces.
    X. Never break the law.

Never break the law? So if critical thinking is made unlawful? Most "laws" are immoral, and I refuse to comply with immoral laws. "NO VICTIM, NO CRIME" and "LIBERTY" is the foundation of our Constitutional Republic.

The problem with rare coin collecting for me is in a drastic down turn, a depression or a catastrophic failure of society etc. People won’t care how rare or collectible a silver or gold coin is. The value of the metal will be what’s important. So I just stack easily recognizable silver bullion or rounds. I don’t go with bars though due to its hard to recognize fake bars from legit. And large bars would be harder to use as currency in a catastrophe, coins will be easier to spend. Great video by the way I agree with you 100%.

you are right on track i've been buying morgans peace dollars and mercury dimes for 50 years,i don't own any new money, weight is all that matters, and hiding it in more than one place, gold and silver will not melt in a house fire, that's another plus, valuables have always been a pain in the ass storing them ,never banks, they change the names on banks more often ,and you are the last to know

I agree but only downside is if you need to buy something through the system, and say silver has gone up in price then you will have to pay capital gains tax on that silver unless it's one of the big named coins like the Brittanias which are capital gains tax free. Keep those to cash up when going thru the matrix and use the others for all other trade when the time comes

Thanks again Seeker! You really go the extra mile and do all the leg work and hard thinking for us! Haha. What a huge difference in possible profit margins once you start talking any type of significant volume. Sometimes even knowing the generic is a better deal it's hard to buy it over the premium stuff especially when it's just a few rounds/coins at a time. Clearly it's always better to think of the stack as a whole not just the individual purchase. Thanks for sharing with us!
