What a superb video. Beautifully shot. Excellent presentation. Clear and precise walk through of the tracing, detection and repair of the fault and the logic employed to do so. A tiny bit of frustration that the most critical part -- removal and replacing of the tiny parts involved -- could not be filmed but that was entirely understandable in the circumstances. All in all, a fantastic piece of work, explanation and lighting/filming and all done by someone using English as a second language. Brilliant.

    • @TRXLab

+iron man Hi, I totally agree with you but this work needs to be done under the microscope and that doesn't work with the camera. But be assured we are working on a solution to do it better in the future. 73's

Just so you know, I have actually monitored heat soak through to the opposite side of a PCB and even when one side is thoroughly heated (such as with extended IR preheating an entire side) the opposite side is pretty reliably 20-40C cooler than the heated side. So, if you raise your component to the necessary temperature for desoldering the component you should ordinarily still be very safely below the melt point on the opposite side. The notable exceptions would be boards with very heavy nearby via stitching (such as high current and some microwave boards) or metal core circuit boards (such as those used with high power LEDs or transistors where the heat must pass through the PCB to a heatsink on the opposite side). However, when you need to secure SMD components to ensure they can not be knocked loose, silicon adhesive Kapton tape will serve one well as it is unaffected by typical soldering temperatures and will not cause any damage (it releases cleanly and easily).

    Hi Peter, Super Video,

    Great video Peter, as always!
Interesting though that Icom don't distribute semiconductors in ESD shielded bags?
Before you removed the amplifier you could hear some noise at the injected signal. Just as you can hear from a stressed amplifier, that was my clue. ;)
But again, nice explained and well gone through.
    I lift my hat off!

I was wondering if you checked the voltage at pin 6 of the new amp chip? I suppose the bypass cap also could have failed and dragged down the voltage. Turned out the amp chip was the problem. Interesting how the huge signal did not blow out the pre-amp transistor! One would have though that would be the first to go!

    Hallo,
Well sorry for the complain, but do yourself a favor and try to impove your english, please, not for me just for yourself.

so much talking no enough physical diagnostics. talk wile you work with tools in hand. i hate flow carts. flow carts just like i used when working on cars. i truly hate flow carts, not fully drawn out schematics. i'm just a hands on person. i pick up on what's gong on. it's like being talked down to otherwise. it's me, not you. in other words; a chalk board is boring. and spending time over it. i had a hard time staying awake.

Ha Ha Ha yet again getting the credit for someone else soldering work. You're not pulling the wool over my eyes. So you can't solder on camera but can do everything else perfectly fine on cam lol. Thing is why not, you have both hands free to do the job and not have to hold the camera in place while doing the work. Great job though to the original person who replaced the components. Really is a shame that certain individuals cant give the credit when its due but take it all for themselves. Absolutely disgusting and disrespectful.
