I like writing on small letter size tablets from Rite-Aid and a pen, write anywhere, take anywhere, type/edit when you get home. Something about it makes it stress-free and not so serious that my ideas have flow. Love your Vids, thanks.
I got into writing during COVID. Not because I wanted to write, but because my daughter’s HS drama program couldn’t do live performances. I decided to produce a short film for them. Long story short, I converted an onstage play into a movie script. There wasn’t too much “actual” writing required, but I did have to create call sheets, scene blocking, production script, and loads of other documents. IT IS AMAZING FOR PEOPLE PRODUCING THEIR SCRIPTS. I am now writing screenplays from scratch It is NOT great for spec scripts. Scene numbers cannot be removed from slug lines. The rest of the functionality is really good.
Thanks for your review! I started out with Movie Magic, then Fade In, which has been my main solid, dependable choice for the last 8 years or so, but I would love for you (or someone else) to do a review/comparison on Drama Queen, which I've been test-driving recently. I think it's very powerful and yet under-rated. I'd love to hear from others who've used it as well. Thanks.
Viewer from the future: Fade In is still $79.95 as of December 28, 2023. 😊👍 Edited to add: you don't have to pay twice to install on both PC and Mac. It let me register on both with one payment, which is super cool!
You're welcome. I love it. It's the main software I use, although I do use Arc Studio for early drafts now because of their planning tools, which suit me.
When I decided to try writing, spending big bucks on a computer and software was out of reach. I challenged myself to write on paper first to see if the foundation was there. About 1/2 way thru my first script and with cramped hand I was convinced I would continue on. So I decided I could spend 3-400 on this hobby. New iPad $350,Bluetooth keyboard and mouse $75, and final draft mobile app $10. This setup works so well for me. I couldn’t believe how many fd features I got for $10. Not trying to sway anyone away from the program he is talking about, I’ll check it out too.
@Andrew: this is a great suggestion and alternative for people, so thank you for posting it. I've pretty much only written by hand (like you) and on a computer... never really done a tablet, although I've done a few edits and tweaks using Fade In's tablet app. But this is a great alternative for someone who has limited resources. Thanks again!
People like Tarantino are very open about wringing scripts in longhand. And just like drawing with ink on real paper. There's a lot of benefit, I think, of being forced to live with the past lines no matter how badly you want to change them. It makes you force yourself to finish drafts in a very different way from when you can vut, copy, paste, correct spelling etc etc. And as said in the video the industry standard is PDF not any of the proprietary screenplay app formats. So as long as you get to the pdf on schedule, then agents and executives and everyone else will probably not care how you got there. That being said... I guess, if you do write in longhand or on a physical typewriter or something. There probably is value in something like Fade In just to convert the pdf to paper in a reliable way.
Movie Magic software used to have something like this (not sure if they still do... haven't used that software in a long time). But if you're a visual person and want to do something digital, anything like this can be helpful. I haven't used Causality, but at only $6/month, it might be worth checking out... for all of you visual people.
I don't think so. Most free versions are limited in their features. Writer Duet may have it (the paid version of Writer Solo), but I'm not sure one way or the other.
You need to Do a NEW version of this Video. I use Trelby but just found KIT Scenarist and it has a lot more fetures now than your review, notes, pictures, cork board, ETC.
Bought Final Draft years ago, like buying a Ferrari and only driving it Sundays around town, observing the speed limit... Your channel turned me on to WriterSolo a few months back. Love that software!
Glad you like it. It's definitely one of the stellar free software versions out there... and it's not distracting like some of the other packages out there.

That's Great Charlie. I already have software and I'm watching this a year from the days that it was created.

I have heard a lot of good things about Fade In. Thank you for your suggestion.

Thank you Charlie 😊 .
I use fadein, scrivener, and writersolo. I still need lessons though, I've not written seriously in several years.
Thank you, Charlie!
Thank you Charlie
Highland 2 is a dream. Natively Fountain so you're writing is an ease and it's just clean and simple as an app.

I played for a while with Causality, which is quite original for its graphical approach and interlinking of events and cards.

Does Writer Solo have the table read feature? Fade In and Final Draft do. Just curious.

You da man, Charlie.
A huge thank you, Charlie. ;)

Thank you Charlie (even though it's too late to win 😂)

I refuse to use ANYTHING Web based because of THEFT nowadays.
For me being able to use it on an iPad is a necessity. Unfortunately, the choice is very limited.
Thank You Charlie! 😊
Thank you Charlie! ❤
