While the rest of planet Earth is centered in actual reality, right?
Look, being uneducated and/or refusing to educate, does NOT mean the educated person is condescending anyone.
That is a misguided and false belief created by minds incapable of critical thought and common sense. Used to somehow help the uneducated feel better about their life choices and the reality that they will probably not go very far in life unless they begin making better decisions.
Try defining a word as educated minds do before attempting to use it in a sentence.
Now THOSE TWO previous sentences were condescension. There IS a difference between advising a person of factual information and actual condescension.
Educators who condescend students are ALWAYS replaced, their careers destroyed. It is exactly why we do not always know their names. They do not survive in the workplace very long whatsoever.

@@OfTheVoid Being a communicator is about being entertaining as much as you are teaching and Neil's audience is the general public. If you're such an enlightened intellectual who can't be bothered to have science explained to you in plain speech, simply move on and endeavor to gain some perspective on who needs the education more and in what form it is painlessly digested.
Your repeated conspiracy-centered viewpoint over people you don't personally like is a naïve mindset that has already poisoned and irreparably damaged the greater discourse surrounding science communication. We do not wish for it to gain ground in the discourse surrounding this, highbrow or otherwise. Of all the things to discuss about a channel specifically about simplifying science, criticizing how Neil caters to the general public and not a panel of Nobel laureates is laughably humdrum.

It's mainly people who's whole public & self-perception rely on a few ideas, so they have to double-down, cos that's all they have to hang their hat on.. With people like Tyson their whole self-perception & public perception does not rely on those little points .. I have seen these non-factual comments under Startalk videos for FAR TOO LONG.
Here is your opportunity to objectively prove a hypothesis. Show us ANY INSTANCE WHATSOEVER of Neil interrupting ANYONE who was not in the middle of stating non-scientific claims and/or other non-factual nonsense.
Go ahead, objectively prove the hypothesis. Us educated will wait.
By the way, when it comes to lies and conspiracy nonsense, interruption IS the correct action. EVERY TEACHER does that very thing when a child's parents begin "teaching" them about mythical "lizard alien humans". Or when a child, thanks to uneducated parent(s), arrives to school in none other than a damn maga hat DESPITE the child not even understanding why daddy wears it, much less why such a hat actually exposes a lack of basic common sense and intelligence more than it has ever done ANYTHING else.
COMPULSORY EDUCATION. Obeying and compliance with that lone federal law will open up reality in ways uneducated minds could never invent within their own head.
Again, objectively prove your false claim. If it is based upon reality, it SHOULD be rather easy to accomplish.

About Violetta's question (22:50 - Is there a speed to time travel?), If we initiate our travel purely in the time dimension (perpendicular to the 3 space dimensions), won't the conservation of our angular & linear momenta keep us in place in space?

    • @SuomiGameHUB
      @SuomiGameHUB 27 днів тому

I've thought about what Neil was saying previously and I'm not sure travelling through time would ignore the force of gravity. So the gravity of Earth would still pull you towards it... not to mention the gravity of sun and black holes in the center of galaxies and whatever. Sun IS NOT stationary. It moves away from the center of the universe. So... no... Earth would not hit you... it would and the whole solar system would be potentially millions of miles away somewhere if you never moved in relation to what... the center of the universe? But everything is relative, so I would assume that the gravity would still have an effect on you even if you traversed through the fourth dimension in the other direction.

I don’t think a pillow would flatten in a vacuum. I think Neil is thinking about what happens when you vacuum the air out of a pillow, for instance, in a plastic bag, but it only flattens in this case because of the air pressure around the bag pressing it inwards without anything to keep it pressed outward in its customary shape. A pillow jettisoned into a vacuum would have its gaseous interior dissipate, but there would be no atmospheric pressure causing it to flatten. I think it’s a more interesting question than he thought. The air in the interior, if anything, might actually apply an outward pressure as it evacuated from the pillow, causing it to puff up as the gas escapes, and then return to its original shape. This is all assuming that the pillow is a feather down pillow, and not something made of airtight cels. A ziplock baggie that was full of air, similarly, would probably pop in a vacuum, but if it was unzipped, it would lose the gas without flattening, because there would be no outside atmospheric pressure to cause it to go flat.

HEY NEIL! I need help with my new years resolution. I've figured out how to change the stars by stopping hurricanes. What I mean is, for stopping hurricanes, I get 7 things and one of those 7 things is to change the stars.
My idea for changing the stars includes Orion and Pleiades (Subaru). I figure it's time to put something up there that's relevant to us, don't you think? Take Orion's belt and Betelgeuse becomes the head with a baseball hat. Below the belt are two legs bending at the knee. The feet aligning perfectly under the bent knees. The 3 stars of Orion's belt align perfectly as the 3 fat belt loops on a baseball uniform. The spear pointing at "Subaru" is the bat being swung and "Pleiades" is the baseball flying away after being hit. Put it all together and you get, "THE ALL-STAR." In my case I drew a 7 on the jersey to make him, "Mickey," but you can put any number you want.
I really have figured out how to change the stars by stopping hurricanes. Don't worry, I've technically already done the easy part and changed the stars. My parents were teachers and for over 3 decades, they taught their students my constellation. Those kids will teach their kids. So on and so on. See, stars changed. I just need help to make it legit and with the rest. No, I'm not kidding. Yes, I'm serious. Figured Neil has taken on the IAU and won, he can help. If, rather when, my idea for stopping hurricanes works it could be converted to a larger scale and EASILY regulate temperature, end drought, stop wildfires. It'd be wrong of me to not, at least, try. This is me, trying. Will you please reach out to me and let me know that your interested in helping to stop hurricanes and change the stars? Thank you and don't worry, where I come from, crazy is a compliment. ;-P
To be clear, I need help with stopping hurricanes.

Never thought about it that way, talking about time travel. Like, I thought about landing in the same place where you took off. For example, if I wanted to see the built of a 100 year old building, the first stone was placed. And I was next to the building so I could arrive at the time desired. Would I land in that same location that I did the time jumping? My thought was that due to earths rotation, I would probably take off from a place in Texas and land somewhere in Africa. Now that he says it, you might end up somewhere in earth's orbit in space, but not on earth. This is never in the movies😂. And is a time jump the same thing as time travel or is there a difference 🤔?

It’s worse than that; the entire solar system is orbiting the center of the galaxy, and the galaxy itself is moving. Arriving in Earth orbit might be optimistic!

"You can't be bringing the recipe off the Campbell's cream of mushroom soup to the pot luck." I understand what you mean, but you can if you live in rural Minnesota. Here's an example. Where I work we had a chili cookoff. I asked the guy who won the cookoff for his recipe. Turns out everything in the recipe came from a can, except the chili seasoning which came from a pouch that said "McCormick Chili Seasoning Mix". The saddest thing is, it was actually the best chili in the contest. Minnesota has a lot of great things, but in general the food goes downhill the further from the equator you go, and Minnesota is pretty far from it.

Mr Tyson has reminded us in several videos that we would have to be aware of the exact time and exact location from the perspective of our galaxy or even universe when time traveling. I wonder if those constant changes and fluctuations are why the quantum level is so uncertain and probabilistic.

Doctor Tyson, with regard to 4th-Dimensional surgery, there was a pilot made in 1995 that was, unfortunately, not picked up as a TV series. The pilot was called "White Dwarf". One of the features of the show was that a doctor could use a special "glove" that actually did what you suggested - clean out arteries, etc.

Hi, what's the diff between a virtual particle heading into a black hole, but it's taking an infinite amount of time to get to the event horizon ( infinite equals the life of the universe?), but gets converted to hawking radiation, and the tired light phenomenon?

    • @AJD132
      @AJD132 6 місяців тому

So I’m not a scientist but I think you’re mixing some things up here. Anyone reading this please feel free to correct me. A particle does not take an infinite amount of time to reach the event horizon, but rather the singularity. And virtual particles in the context of hawking radiation is completely separate from the hypothetical particle heading into a black hole. The radiation is basically the energy from the black hole spontaneously forming particles but one half falls back into the black hole and the other radiates away thus lowering the mass/energy of the black hole slightly.

26:00 Proposal for the term for the speed of time: Chronocity. I think this is a really important concept we need to be considering, because that value, the relative speed of time, will change as we start to travel at fractions of the speed of light.
Follow up to that, are we factoring the cronocity of the earth as it travels through the solar system, the solar system as it travels through the milky way, and the galaxy as it travels through space when we are calculating things like the Hubble Constant? Could the perspective that the universe is expanding be a lensing effect of our own chronocity?

Dr. Tyson. I plan you see you in New York on the 20th. My birthday is on the 21st. First, what is the website to be able to ask questions/support you? Second, do you allow questions after your lectures? Or EVEN BETTER, it'd be the best and most memorable birthday I would've EVER had if I could meet you and ask you a few questions in person. If not, 😢 but I have at least 3 questions I NEED your perspective and genius on these questions

  • @sabinrawr

To the first question (Amanda): Neil, someone DID ask the question you suggested. It's the reason why some physicists are exploring the possibility that Λ (cosmological constant) is not constant in time. It has been suggested that dark energy may be weaker now than it once was, which might explain the Hubble tension and the σ_8 tension.
Maybe they asked because you suggested it?

Why don't we think of Energy as the 5th dimension?
We don't exist in height x width x depth x time without energy. Energy manifests in the ways that it does due to the quanta, so that could be 6th - and perhaps we need to invert the order, to make more sense of it: quanta may be older than the universe itself, and allow for matter to take shape and depth, following specific modes of time and direction of travel, at rates seeming to vary due to quantum or vacuum forces. Energy is the literal unraveling-of-events and the philosophy of action and reaction, necessary for all other things to manifest. Something quantum occurred, and the occurrence itself may have been on a scale colossal enough to start the big bang, one which would be entirely invisible to us without the means to view the universe through not only light, but thought, and consciousness.
The information gathered from light are 6-dimensional, I argue. Our thought synapses, brain functions, and bodily health all rely on fluid transfers and electricity, primarily. The ability for life to cognize beyond itself is a potential for whatever life adapts best to its reality, and that reality nurtures it carefully. Earth is our reality, and the anecdotal evidence for our math. Fortunately, we've adapted codified language and numerical mathematics into society, and can harness the brilliance of engineering as it has ascended humanity into its own dimension, skirting through time to achieve the ability to destroy the planet's ecosystem overnight.
While that is certainly not our goal, it stands as a testament to natural destiny, that we must begin considering the Universe more seriously. Primarily, by respecting that the forces beyond our planet are on a magnitude which cannot be organically imagined, that distances are on scales unreachable by us in our lifetime but future generations may yet visit some distant system or planet, and that death fights us every step of the way. Our bodies are designed for Earth, and for some people there are much more significant limitations to that. If we are not perfectly able, our minds are sitting idly by, used nowhere near their potential. It is thought which designs our existence on this planet, as well as all life on it. No other dimension "obeys" thought but us - whatever the convergence of chemicals in our brains determines that to be.
Thought must exist as some quasi-algorithmic function, repeating itself daily, in order to resist reverting to an otherwise basic state of existence - death of the mind. Sterility. Reality unfolds before us, and we retain information not only of sight, but our other senses as well. In fact, sight is simply photons hitting our eyes, and our brains processing an image, usually its best guess. The margin of error on what we see, physiologically speaking, is nothing compared to our unique interpretations of taste, smell, feel, and sound. The foods we eat, candles we like, beds we prefer, and music preference. The concept of individuality is born of thought, and is present in many creatures capable of such. The Universe experiences itself subjectively through its 6-dimensions, and now through humans who are discovering these aspects.
Self-discovery is an important milestone for evolution in earthly biology. It also describes what is occurring through us, at an accelerating pace, in fact. We are a medium of this higher dimension.
