- Stop DNS Leak on Windows 11 For Your Protection
If you connect to a VPN network on a Windows computer, the smart multi-homed name resolution could lead to DNS leakage and allowing your ISP to see your public IP. Since requests are sent out to all network adapters at the same time, all configured DNS servers receive the requests and with them information on the sites that you visit.

Brilliant tip Brian. thanks buddy.. 👍 All the best..
No problem 👍
Thanks - I'm already using a rotating IP and MAC address with a VPN. I do regularly check for DNS leaks but this is just a cherry on top.
You're welcome
Thank you for the video informative as always. I notice sometimes that Google and or bitwarden will pop up in Flag the internet traffic as suspicious when using a VPN. Does this do anything to prevent that from happening?
Good one Brian and very easy to follow I personally don't use a VPN but for those who do such a great tip.👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Awesome please do more Network security videos
Nice tip thanks Brian. 🙂
Any time!
Hey Brian - is this needed if you've enabled use encrypted https servers via adaptor settings via win11 too? If so the encryption's not much use is it? Cheers
Excellent video Brian. So many people do not realise this and just use a VPN blindly.
I know, give all my trade secrets away 😂
Nearly everyone uses a VPN blindly - that is the point of having one. I am surprised Brian hasn't told us about this before ? Better late than never I guess.
Goes to show when you have a VPN and think you're safe then Brian comes and shows you otherwise. Cheers mate 👍
Happy to help
Brian, thanks again.
1 Before changing it is it wise to make a restore point? 2 who can see my dns when it leaks? My normal dns is already changed to Cloudflare. On VPN PIA i use DNS PIA. 3 When i use a site for testing dns leaks on vpn it says there are no dns leaks. Are they wrong?
I have windows 11 Pro 64 bit system, do I set that as 32 bit or 64 qword value?
I do not have "smart multi home," but do have "multitask name resolution." It is not enabled. Should I leave it be?
my win11 is up to date, last update 5hrs ago,but it does not recognise gpedit and i cannot find local computer policy.i do run a vpn but you got me lost
You probably have the home version of windows and not pro. That's why windows can't find it. Search online for how to add gpedit to windows 11 home version.
Thnx u brother i ask u something i already use vpn but my dns also leak ... I was use multic brower and use vpn use email id but after 15 minute my gmail show activity same computer dns not showing vpn ip ... But how can i fix this issue
thanks for the tip, but i have one question, what if we enable this option on a device that doesnt have a VPN enabled?
What's the point? ISP can see all your traffic anyway without a VPN
Mr. How to restore old BIOS version of Gigabyte Kaby 660 gaming motherboard? After upgrading bios usb is not showing and RAM overclocking is not happening.
I don't know why but I don't have "Edit group policy". What do I do?
DNSClient does not appear on my system. Windows 11 Home 64-bit
Hi, Thank you for all your advice and tips over the years, many of which I've implemented. However, this time I'm unable to follow this tip; see below for examples. I also have a screen shot of the folder structure, if needed.
Location: HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\
I do have 'Terminal Services' folder.
I do have 'Windows FileProtection' folder.
I do not have 'DNSClient folder' folder.
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Terminal Services
HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\Windows File Protection
Sorry Brian, but my W11 Home registry doesn't have (HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsNT)\"DNS Client" folder.
My gpedit don't work and when I install it after through cmd everything looks ok, but after resetting the computer still does not work as if it is not there. :|
I went to where you said and it had no DNS CLIENT FOLDER
Thanks Brian - I use a VPN in my Chrome Browser. An extension.
Good stuff!
Their are websites that will test for DNS leaks when running a VPN
thank you
You're welcome
Man I'm liking this. I Changed it while Watching your Video, How bout them Apples!
Glad I could help
I have Windows 10 Home and in Registry i do not have the Folder DNSClient. Do i have to create that folder myself?
I have 11 and I don't have it either. I assume you have to create it?
Guys Brian! did say in the video, If you Don't have it, you need to add it your self.
When your at the WindowsNT were he showed in the registry, right click it and create a New Key call it DNSClient.
Once that's added right click in the empty space and add a new DWord (32bit) name it DisableSmartNameResolution Then double click, change 0 to 1
@@Ratchet_effect ok thanks. I am not English so i do not understand everything 100 %.
How long has this been known about ? Seems a little late to be finding out now ?
Been around since Windows 8
Save as reg file :
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\DNSClient]
"DisableSmartNameResolution"=dword:00000001
;Boom, Done
A VPN will not fully hide your private online.
That is correct
@@Britec09 I meant to say privacy.
It's just ridiculous in 2023 that Windows doesn't stop DNS leaks by default. Come on Microsoft it's not a world of peace doves and butterflies 🥴
It can be intentional as well.
DNS leaks aren't a bug in Widows 11, it's a feature!
It doesn't work... help me
