    Long ball football is back. But it's being used less so by teams unable to build up from the back, but by elite teams like Pep Guardiola's Manchester City side.
    So why are bigger clubs with solid technical players happy to hit the ball long? Jon Mackenzie takes a look at why Premier League sides are bringing back long balls.

    The modern game has been crying out for it for a long time, teams are leaving themselves hopelessly exposed to the long ball and the irony of Man City being the team that effectively ended long ball culture being the first to bring it back is not lost on me.

      The thing about Pep is that he's a student of the game and is always willing to apply a tactical change if it wins. Because he has guided footbal so far way from the long ball, now he gets to revitalize it and keep using it until others get hip. His advantage is constantly being ahead of the curve and not being stuck to one way of playing.

    I’m pretty sure like all things, football is a cycle. -when a team figures out a very effective way of play, all the other teams try to implement it with what they have, and usually there’s an exploit that happens as many teams start doing those same brand new tactics. And then the person or team who spots this uses it against everyone, and now the top managers who have implemented the new style of play must figure out how to stop that exploit, and it become a cycle

    • @karabomasibi2331
      @karabomasibi2331 9 місяців тому +2

      And the reason for Man City's dominance is that pep is always willing to learn new systems and apply them so City are always among, if not the first, teams willing to attempt the new thing. Never being too far behind the new tactical innovation and then once everyone goes to the new way, he can quickly revert to the old

    When I played with a CFG coach a couple of years his advice to me as a GK when we implemented pressing was to read the pitch, if the 6 knocked the ball back to me from a goalkick it probably means they are pressing very high so there's gonna be space for the attackers to run into if I can hit a long ball to them. I think we haven’t seen an elite mid/low block team for some time. Mourinho’s Inter or Simeone’s Atleti are good examples - mid block with excellent pressing traps. Spanish teams are the best examples of low blocks and they have the ability to control the tempo hence why they’re good in Europe. It’s nice to see a striker like Haaland after all the false 9s we’ve seen. Proper penetrative player who can ruin a team with a high line.

      Arsenal just bought a goalie that plays more accurate long passes and they also bought havertz and they're banking on him helping bypass man to man by the goalkeeper hitting it long to him. Manchester united just burnt every bridge with de gea in order to get a goalkeeper that plays long passes too and they also bought a centre forward that will fit that kind of game. Long balls are back in fashion.

    The best example of this is Newcastle. We will play out from the back but if any team presses us aggressively, we go long - partly because we can't play out from the back but also because we have fast wingers. Even though Pope is awful at long balls, Schar, Trippier and Bruno are good at them that it results in a lot of chances for us. This is why even teams like Arsenal are selective when they press us.

    Similar tactics used by Norway against Scotland recently. Long ball up to Haaland who then tried to win a free kick/penalty. Mind numbingly boring and frustrating to watch

    Great video. Though i wouldn't mind a slower talking pace, even if the video becomes a little longer.
