  • Many artists tend to be literal and naturally tend towards realism. How do we break free and lean towards impressionism and even abstraction? The method that helps Clint Howard the most is painting water. In this demo, we'll explore the characteristics of water, how to represent it with a dry or opaque media, like soft pastels, and how to take advantage of the nature of water to develop our abstract painting skills.

Love that he's doing this upside down. Don't get so wrapped up in what things are and just work with shapes and color

I believe it is not upside down, I know it looks that way but the orangy colour at the top is shoreline and the rest is reflection in the water

This was very interesting to watch. I'm a watercolorist but am considering trying pastels. Just wish I had a dedicated studio---too messy for the dining table.

An old credit card could work pretty well

Yes, a credit card can work well for some marks and scratches. It doesn't blend or drag the pastel quite like rubber or silicone, but it can still be useful.
