As much as I like the convenience of a dryer, I do enjoy spending time to iron my shirts and trousers. I started doing this in high school because I was a Air Force JROTC cadet, which requires that we wear the Air Force uniform and adhere to military dress and grooming regulations.
Call me crazy, but I find folding clothes and ironing to be relaxing.
Sven, thanks for the tips! They are much appreciated :)

I know it is not traditional, but I've been ironing for 30+ years, and I prefer to use the square end of the board. The shoulders lay flatter and the front of the shirt has more room to lay on.
IMO, if you don't have a crease in the top of your sleeves, you didn't iron your shirt all the way!

    • @tuberunner101
      @tuberunner101 6 років тому +1

I agree with using the Square end. It is the only addition that I have to the video. There is a reason the Ironing Board has a square and pointed end. Pointed end for slacks, and square end for shirts. Use the Square end of the board for all the areas that your shoulders occupy. The Yoke and top of the shirt where the sleeves attach should be ironed by imagining the square corners as arms that go in the sleeves. Done right, you can iron the whole front without re-positioning the shirt, and the back in two simple positions. The Square end is most important I think.

All the steam is great and effective. But what about those of us who need to wear glasses? All this steam fogged my glasses and I could not see an unsightly crease while ironing and often not until I wore the garment. There must be a solution for me. Simply taking off glasses is not an option because I cannot see to iron without them.

Dear Sir, you show us a very good tip on how to iron a shirt in a professional way, but threre are some basic technic you missed on your show. For, instance to make easy, ironing the back side of the shirt just fold it from one edge of the sholder to the other end along side the stiches and iron it to eliminate the crease, and the second tip, again pinch in between the ironed stiches and the top side of the shirt stiches folded it in to two, then take that point to down to the coffes (to the edge of the shirt arm) streach it and iron it, you do not need that additional gadget to iron the shirt, that all what you missed. I hope that will be helpful.

If we use above method the life span of shirt will limited and as garment owner we will not recommend it. As garment manufacturers & exporters and with our field experience since 1980, we would like to suggest a different approach to caring for your shirts. Instead of using the current method, we recommend ironing the shirts inside out. This technique not only helps prevent fading but also extends the lifespan of the shirt. By ironing the inside, you minimize direct heat contact with the shirt's outer surface, thereby reducing the risk of color fading. This simple adjustment in your ironing routine can make a significant difference in maintaining the quality and longevity of your shirts.

A+ for using a clapper and sleeve board, but you should never press your garments on the right side of the fabric. This is because contact pressing can create unwanted sheen, especially on mixed fabrics, ironing inside out hides this and keeps your clothing looking newer.

    Eh, sorry to interrupt.
    Mother here.
High spins do not cause creases. Over loading the washing machine causes more creases.
When you remove clothing from the machine hold the clothing tightly at the shoulders or waist band and give it good flick.
    Once should do it.
You can use the tumble dryer. Use a cool setting.
    Do not overload the dryer.
Lastly remove clothing from dryer one at a time.
    Flick out as before.
Hang on a hanger right away.
You will have no creases or rinkles.
A quick run over with the iron is all that's needed.
    Bless you all.
Some women take being a mother seriously.

The ironing boards with the basket on the large end I can’t stand…
Doesn’t matter if your left or right handed the large end is the best end to use…your shirt is made in sections
Using the big end allows you to cover more area and aids in laying the sections flatter…rolling your shirt through each section…the pointy end can be used for sleeves…
35 years in the military…I can get razor sharp creases and turn a shirt into cardboard with a pressing cloth and starch.
Of course each to their own and whatever works best…lots of patience

From a family of tailors: yours = BEST video on ironing shirts. Now, going to step back, old school, from a point in time where ironing boards were folded blankets opened on a regular table and irons had only one point--- not even cords! The WIDE END is designed to IRON as the tapered end is for different areas of your garments! (It is an ironing board, not a rack.)It needs to be FREE of ANY +ALL racks or cord holders !! 👕 YOKES FIT PERFECTLY at the WIDE---esp the larger shirts-- in 2️⃣ easy moves-- forming no "faux plis" -- those irritating little wrinkles that form to one side as you work the other. The FRONTS fabric will smoothly be ironed with the help of gravity in 1️⃣swoop movement. As you, they started sleeves from the armpit moving up and out, always consistently referencing the fold ON THE FABRIC SEAM JOINING, NOT the other side of the seam. They also used the sides and squared back end of the iron to back into flat broad areas. Good memories😘

I remembering my mother's ironing routine in the 50's. She "sprinkled" each garment with water, rolled it up and put it in a large plastic bag. The sprinkler she used was a bottle with a cap that had multiple holes in it, designed just for wetting clothes.

The best way to iron the shirt is to have someone who will do it for you.

My goodness! I have been ironing shirts my whole life and do a pretty good job, but you have just taught an old dog quite a few new tricks! Thank you so much. Will you allow me a few added suggestions for beginners? Dry the shirt by hanging it on a PLASTIC hanger. Ironing between buttons? Yes, but don't forget after you have ironed all of them between, to slide the iron all the way up the outside edge and all the way up inside the buttons to smooth out the button area. Lots of people forget that final button area smoothing. That omission makes the button area look buckled up. One other suggestion: your ironing of any clothing will go better if you very first iron the INSIDE of the heavy linings: Turn the article inside out and iron all the loose pocket linings flat and smooth. the back of the buttonhole placket, the back of the waistband and zipper placket, the back of the collar support, the back of the cuff lining for sleeves and pants. Those areas also tend to be damper, so the first-off ironing helps to dry them out, and that supports a smoother and easier passage for the iron when you start the front OUTSIDE. When ironing collar corners, check your heat setting, so that you don't scorch the corners right off the bat! So annoying! Start ironing at that corner and move up the collar to the middle, then move to the other corner point and up to the middle, then iron the middle area so you have a smooth collar. If you start in the middle of the collar and move down to the corner point, you may end up with extra fabric wrinkles! Oh no! If you note the collar or armpits are stained, spray them with stain remover and throw the shirt back in the hot water wash. Do NOT iron it or you will set those stains. My order is this: iron inside plackets and heavy seams, iron sleeves and cuffs, iron the neck and collar, then iron the body of the shirt, hold, and turn to inspect. Also, begin ironing on the left seam of the body and work from the front of the article all the way around if you are right-handed. If left-handed, start at the right side seam. If the pocket linings are loose, you can pull them out of the way as you iron so that you don't get a line on the outside of the fabric. If you are ironing a shirt with front buttons, start at the right side and work your way around the back to the left front side. That way you don't get confused about where you are on the article. When you finish, hold the clothing up and take a look at it. You may need to smooth the front again where it got a little wrinkled as you turned it on the board. Pants always need to be smoothed out again across the tummy. The most difficult thing is chest pockets where the outside layer is slightly larger than the body of the shirt layer. Pull the pocket to one side and iron, and then to the other side to iron. You will avoid a crease at one of the pocket side seams that way. I have never heard of any necessity of ironing sleeves without a top crease, but to each his own. Your shirt looks great! If for any reason you just feel physically uncomfortable ironing, try turning your board to face the other way and adjust the height. (Take the iron off the board before you do that or CRASH! LOL!) Does that help? Clean the iron base plate regularly, because stuff builds up and that can ruin the article immediately, forcing you to throw it back in the wash! Arrgghh! Yes, you can clean the ironing board cover by just throwing it in the wash -ALONE! If you get board marks on your fabric thru the ironing board cover, use a bath towel or two as a lining over the board and under the board cover before tying on the board cover.

    • @babygerald4645

My problem is getting the shoulder area nice and smooth. I usually start with the collar, then the cuffs, sleeves, then one side of the front over to the back and then the other side of the front. After this I'll touch up the shoulder areas.
Great advice for all the small details- no dryer, check for stains, ironing when damp, better spray bottle.

When I'm really in a hurry and I know I'll wear a jacket over it I'll only iron the front of the shirt to perfection. The rest may have some wrinkles left but I don't really care because you can't see them

Don't listen to this dude, don't push hard, the harder you push the shinier the surface will get. Push firmly just enough so it gets flattened. My expensive shirt is kinda ruined now (I followed the care instructions on the tag)

I like drying my shirts the old fashioned way, using a clothes line. No heat, saves money (electricity or gas) and, the shirts smell fresher, when hung outside.

It's quicker to iron one side of the front from bottom-to-top, the pull the shirt around the top of the ironing board and across the yoke, then continue down the other side of the front. When done with the front, pull the shirt over the edge to iron the back. There is a lot of time saved positioning the shirt if you follow this order, especially if you're doing several at one time.

This is for cotton white dress shirts. Take shirts out of washer. Put on hangers and let dry at room temp until almost dry. Then start to iron. You need a high wattage iron to iron fast and remove the remaining moisture. The results will be amazing.
I always start with the yoke, and finish with the cuffs.

    • @roxannlegg750
      @roxannlegg750 6 місяців тому

@@AM-tu1rc Actually - I did teach myself. It is possible. I learned by triall and error out of pure interest and motivation. I know I was probably born with that skill. No one really taught me "ironing". Why would I lie? I taught myself, and if I was taught I dont remember because i was doing alll kinds of housework before the age of 10. I taught myself how to iron at a young age - because I liked clothes that looked neat. After the age of 12 I had no mother - so I did everything for myself and younger brother. Trial and error and practice does make perfect. I observed how other clothes looked on people and saw where the creases where and used my very practical brain. But did someone actually "teach" me...? No. I observe sometimes and then - just did. I also taught myself to sew and bake. Some people are capablle of teaching themselves you know... and no - I had no mother, and raised by a single working father, so - no. I had no mother to teach me. I got better in high school in dressamking classes, but I already could iron well by then! Some people are better at learning life skills on the run than others. Dont assume.

I love to iron my shirts, my mother taught me when I was a child and my wife helped me improve my technique. For many years, I used to spend Sunday afternoons ironing the clothes that I was going to wear during the week.
