For everyone complaining about the lack of reverb, this is a clone of a 62 Brownface Deluxe which didn't have reverb either (the only brownface that did was the '63 Vibroverb)
The best James Bond theme song!
John has quickly become one of my favorite reviewers. Keep this guy on the payroll!
I always enjoy John's gear reviews immensely! Thanks for another treat of a demo John ;^)
Yeah John!
JB, the right man for this demo for sure!
... who else saw that John was holding a tele(style) and clicked before they even read the description👍...
I thought it was going to be a new Suhr T-style thing.
This amp is a pleasant surprise!
If being dirtier than "dimed" is wrong, who'd want to be right?
That thing sounds killer. Always dig this guys demos
It's supposed to be a Brownface Deluxe (6g3) clone, not a Princeton.
Great playing! It sounds great no matter how or where it’s built!
Great Test, I love when it's just plug directly into the amp that way we really hear the amp itself
Harmonic trem takes 3 tubes, so it would need 5 with phase inverter, and 1st gain stage. It looks/sounds like a deuxe with bias mod trem.
Great review . . . killer playing . . .
10:32 John looking for that tremelo system haha
Great review… all of your reviews are great! It’s just a nice real world (meaning your setting), meat and potatoes review. Always look forward to them.
This dude is just an awesome player man
I've heard John Suhr state that he didn't think a standby switch was necessary in a tube amp.
There's a lot of guys that say that. They're superfluous on tube amps. They don't produce nearly the amount of juice to require them.
A standby switch isn't required for a gz34 recitifier, which is a slow-start rectifier. It takes 10-15 seconds to start conducting.
A third of brown faces are in a landfill, and the rest are in Joe Bonamassa's garage.
This might be my first Suhr purchase. I've been in the market for a brownface and almost pulled the trigger on the Chris Stapleton from fender but this is priced great and being from Suhr it'll be bullet proof
thanks John
With actual brownface 6g3's at or near $3000, the price tag on this is surprisingly reasonable
When the "Dime that Pig" t shirt is available I will happily buy one. Ps - this vid helped convince me to buy this amp, thanks!!
Rock on!
7:45... castles made of sand, from axis: bold as love... that was an unexpected surprise! 👍🏻
Just made for that spy chord. Yeah mon. Great playing John.
You didn’t wait very long John! Now I missed the button! #longtimesub
Premier Guitar, Nice sounding, great looking amp Mate are they available over here in Auckland New Zealand
If you got about $2200US I’ll send you one
The 5ar4 is a rectifier tube , not preamp. Tube rectification doesn’t require a standby switch.
I'm with you John, I'd rather have reverb than not but regardless this amp has some great breakup.
It totally nails the Tommy James sound and sounds absolutely amazing!
Tremolo aside, that is one gorgeous sounding amp.
Nice! Very good amp! Also, Ilov'it when you mentioned the notes and the title of that old 70s song. Sorry, can you say the title and who sang it? Thank you
Damn I need one or two of these. I liked the normal alot when you switched over. Can't go wrong either way. Is it loud e ouch for gigs? Compete with a drummer?
The tremolo sounds great, but I'm pretty sure it's not harmonic tremolo (which is what you called it), it's tube bias. I'm wrong a lot, so disregard if I'm an idiot. Thanks for the vid!!
it's not harmonic as stated by John Suhr.
John! what pickups are in the Les Paul? sounds really really good!!!
"I mean, that's as dirty as I ever want to be". John Bollinger 2020
11:37 😂Love it.
I like the "I wanna swim in that slop" regarding reverb lol.
John has very nice guitars. I need to check out that amp.
That didn't suck... Smooth Power...
Don't really need a standby switch with a valve rectifier.
True. The slow voltage rise of the tube rectifier makes a standby switch unnecessary.
Kevin McCarthy u know if u could add a black face tone stack on the normal channel leaving the bright and trem as they are?
@@Atttuner why? The limited tone stack in very effective "as is". If you want a blackface sound, plug into the low gain input, and raise the tone up to about 7. That will get you close. The blackface tone stack reduces the overall gain quite a bit, which is why you want to use the low input.
Sounds legit to what its suppose to be. Being that John Suhr has his name on it you can bet the farm its right.
What year and model is that Gretsch? What a beauty!
Man, that thing sounds good. Less expensive that the Fender Stapleton. Sadly, my wife doesn't appreciate dimed pigs as much as I do.....
After hearing the Les Paul Standard into the copy of the "Brownface" Deluxe. I can really hear that Billy Gibbons "Tres Hombre's" sound. I think I may have to look at some soon for myself.
10:32 is why all Les Pauls need a Duesenberg or Bigsby style tremolo and roller bridge!
John, great as always! Love your demos. Curious your thoughts on this Hombre vs the Stapleton Princeton? Which would serve what kind of player/venue better?
Peach Guitars ab'ed those two. The Suhr sounded way better dimed.
John, awesome demo. Can you (or anyone) comment on how it does at apartment volumes for daytime playing before the gig? :-) Even clean, I'd love something usable without getting too loud. Conversational levels?
Forget everything over 2 Watt for Apartment Volume.
I would like to hear the gear you demo along side a backing track so we can hear how well this combination fits into the over sound.
Great job John! Amp sounds great! I’ll take one with REVERB 👍😎
Look for a 1993 Fender 6G16 Vibroverb Reissue. Amazing amp. It was the first Fender amp to have on board reverb.
Matt Fields thanks man appreciate that!
Oh, John's been listening to Bill Frisell...
Apparently no one told John what this amp is.... As stated by John Suhr and labeled on the description of the amp at NAMM this is an exact clone of a Fender Brown Deluxe, 6G3 circuit. They weren't "going for" anything other than a clone of that amp. Someone screwed up here. That said, ignoring the incorrect description, this is another very enjoyable demo of an amp by John.
It’s based on a brownface Deluxe, which is the main amp Billy Gibbons used on the Tres Hombres album.
Listen to the Suhr interviews from NAMM if you didn’t get the “Hombre = Tres Hombres” reference in this amp’s name
Ah - yes, dots are now connected. Thank you 👊
Is that one of those super light magnesium(?) alloy slides at the end? 🤔
Hey John what is that chord @6:15? A different form of an A major?
He couldn’t be more off in his description - it’s a virtually straight copy of a brown deluxe with the inherent bias vary tremolo and 12” speaker
Sister Rosetta Tharp! Nice!!
This ain't Harmonic, it's tube biased !!
Les Paul is killer through this amp.
Looks more like a brown Deluxe 6G3 than a Princeton.
Nice amp! I'd buy when I hitt the lottery!
I was loving the amp until I heard it was “a loud 22 watts” 22 watts is already loud even for stage volume nowadays.. that’d just about blow the windows out in my house! Still sounds amazing though!
The Chris Stapleton 6G2 is more manageable volume wise Still plenty loud enough to play with a band
It’s a 6g3 deluxe. 1963 schematic
How slow the tremolo can go is always what I want to know. I never use it 'fast', but sometimes the slow isn't slow enough.
Fantastic amp. Needs more whammy bar.
Nice "Son of A Preacher Man" intro!
I'm old school too: no pedal board, heavy guitar strings, and on certain guitars, even heavy flat-wound strings.
By the way: I have the largest vintage string collection in the world!
Two string trees??? Great sounding amp, though.
What's the guitar name again?
Cryotone.
@@johnbohlinger thanks. Great reviews.
Your neighbors must love you!!!
I was skeptical at NAMM. I don’t think it’s hand wired though, it’s price doesn’t reflect that. I don’t believe the smaller Brownface amps had the harmonic tremolo, it’s a two tube circuit.
It is handwired and it is tube biased trem.
I just watched a video about this amp and it is not hand wired. I has a pcb board
@ 13:35 still no ES-335 (?) & I'm so clever...
Funny that! That you love tremolo; I actually hate it - it's like distorting birdsong rather than enjoying its purity!
Great sounding little amp! The tremelo makes me want to plug in a guitar and play a little "Walk On By". (Who do you think remembers that great old song?).
Money is a little high, in my humble opinion.
That was some great finger-tip waltzing there my friend. Another fine presentation by JB....he always wins.
Leroy Van Dyke's or Dionne Warwick's? It would sound great on either of those!
I don't know if it's the 57 but it sounds like the speaker was breaking up slightly even when it was at low volume in the bright channel.
The demo starts at 4:00.
Loud enough for gigging?
yes, depending on your drummer.
If you bend your note either with your finger or the whammy bar at the right moment, you can make that tremelo effect of those notes you play into a single note.
Standby switches don't protect output tubes. It's a common misconception.
Shaken, not stirred...
If it’s by Suhr then I’m sure I’m priced out.
For real. Overpriced copies.
@@roymontero4066 I felt the same way till I really spent some time with their guitars. A suhr guitar is really more than sum of its parts. in my personal opinion they added a level of refinement to the S and T styles we're all familiar with but of course at the end of the day, different strokes for different folks. Cheers
Can get pretty close with import stuff for under a hundred bucks... especially since you’re gonna need around a grand worth of pedals to get decent reverb and drive tones... over a grand and a half ($1600 + tax) for a 22 watt amp with no reverb is just marketing for stupid people, actual vintage amps are going for less these days.... I’m actually offended that they are pushing this crap....
robert w I felt the same way honestly. Does this guitar market really need another overpriced clone?
Roy Monfero lmao do you just go around on Suhr videos and troll? This is like the third one I’ve seen you on. Get a hobby.
There's no excuse for not slapping a reverb tank in there. It's kinda like buying a brand new guitar and having to send it straight to rge tech to get it worked on and ready to play! It's basically saying, " Ill take 100% of your money, and give you 66% of a new oriduct"...!
Pretty rude, no?!
...Having said that - boy, it sounds superb!!🤩
For sure man, for $1600 it’s almost like flipping the bird at the community, they sit at the boardroom table thinking these idiots will throw their cash at us as long as it glows and wrapped in tweed... ridiculous...
A reverb circuit would change the tone of the amp. It is a rather specific tone on this amp! So no reverb.
I can’t imagine buying an amp because of the trem when there are so many pedal options
The amp sounded ratty when he turned it up with the Tele.
Cedar Bay Agreed. My Strymon Flint is incredible!
I like it's clean tones, but, personally, I never used tremolo when I had it.
Anyone know if I could mod it w a blackface tone stack on the normal channel leaving the bright channel as is?
You could but it would be pretty quiet.
Can mujeres use that amp?
Play the rolling Stones song titled street fighting man on that amp
No standby switch, probably because they know standby switches are terrible for the health of your amp! Google it
Tube bias tremolo not harmonic.
WOW, basically built the same amp for David Garrette's guitarist Marcus Wolf 10 years ago, shoulda kept goin...
No verb? I mean really? So it’s trem or dry unless I put a verb pedal in front... why not just make it completely clean with just a volume knob and 22 watts is way too much to get blusey and not just kill your ears noodling around... how about a 5 watt tap and add verb with an effects loop instead of the trem... that’s a super simple circuit these days.. most of us carry a few billion transistors in our pockets these days, let’s not pretend this stuff costs more than a couple bucks to add please... I mean really for $1600 bucks... I gotta start an amp company, so much easier than my current bleeding edge low profit tech gig...
It would be nice if you would get a groove/harmony going and go with it (while demoing) instead of changing every 2 seconds.
Homobre, another Fender clone! Suhr = Fender.
I think you ruined the demo by overdoing it with the guitar tremolo. It sounds drunk. Horrible. Let the amp take care it for you.
Sounds overpriced
I cant find anything remotely good sounding about it
Why isn't a woman doing this instead?
When they make the Suhr Lesbian.
Can mujeres use that amp?
como no.
@@johnbohlinger hahaha, you are da hombre!
