This one and "Women And Children First" are neck and neck in my book... this tune NEVER gets OLD!!! Makes my 55 yr old Head Bang and Shake - just like I was 16 again! Coin toss b/t "Unchained" or "And The Cradle Will Rock" for perfect Eddie Riffs, DLR swagger, Michael and Alex laying it down.
You guys have the best sounding audio I've ever heard on a UA-cam channel! I love Van Halen and usually when I listen to their music online it never has that full spectrum sound especially in Van Halens early records. You guys are great keep it up!!!👍😊🔥🔥🔥
Easily my favorite Van Halen song. I appreciate you guys being real about how you feel about it. Makes me realize why I might not be everyone’s cup of tea either. 🤣😂
Fun fact I stumbled upon accidentally while reading the fantastic 1960s book "Pimp" by Iceberg Slim. The line "Blue eyed murder in a size five dress" in this song was inspired by the line "Brown skin murder in a size twelve dress".
Not really-'Jump' was/is ridiculously overrated and shitty pop-even 'I'll Wait' is better. The deep cuts are what carries 1984-the 'hits' haven't aged well.
Wow….this is probably my favorite track on the album…..funny how differently people look at things….and how differently it hits them! To me, this is just so bad ass with attitude!
Eddie Van Halen's genius, IMO. was his ability to write catchy hooks, and to keep his play to what the song needed. A LOT of great guitar players can't write a great song or pull back and dumb it down when they need to. Most are overly flashy all the time. His timing and rhythm playing is very hard to emulate when learning VH songs.
This was the show starter for the 1984 tour. New Haven CT Valerie sitting on a stool watching Eddie. Their music for me is about fun times! Great times! Goofing off! Love, whether it was real or a one-night stand. Yet, they pay homage to the past. A good time band!
Dropping off another suggestion, if interested. "Bonny Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Jeff Beck, and Beth Hart - Sweet Home Chicago (2012)" this was a live performance in honor of Buddy Guy at the 35th annual Kennedy Center Honors in 2012. Wonderful tunes and beautiful memories🎶
Love your honest review. No-one loves every single song they hear from every single genre out there. But you find aspects of things that catch your attention or your ear. What more can anyone ask?
The first time I saw Van Halen was in Dallas, TX, 1984. I liked the band, but I wasn't particularly excited about the show. I kind of came along for the ride, so to speak. Wasn't a huge fan. Then, out of the darkness, the arena was flooded with blinding light as they opened with this song at ear-busting volume. Wall-to-wall Marshall amps and a three-tiered stage. From beginning to end I was absolutely mesmerized. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen. You see, the secret of Van Halen is that the magic is really in the live show. The albums just can't do the live experience justice.
Very true. My first experience with VH was the same except in 1981… liked them, didn’t love them, but going along with friends to see what the fuss was about. Went back enthusiastically for Diver Down a year later and in 1984 for 1984. This track opened most Fair Warning shows and is almost hard core funk. Love it!!!!
This is the one the those radio has burned out. Agree with you though Mean Streets, that was the bomb! That was one of my all time favorites. When I first heard that opening intro to Mean Streets I thought Edwards not of this earth:) Where did that even come from?????????
Hey guys..Keep up the good work!!! Please look into "Romeo's delight" or"D.O.A." These two songs are classic Van Halen..Shout out from the old metal head from Detroit!! Peace and love..
I remember many drunken stoned drives to the beach listening to this. Early Van Halen is serious drinking and stoning music. Nothing wrong with that. Except the driving part. No excuse, but there weren't very many cars around rural Texas back then.
A few years before this, Trapeze was quietly making serious music, but the party crowd of rock jumped on the Van Halen bandwagon. Van Halen brought GIRLS into rock and roll for first time since 60's protest rock music. Up to Van Halen, in USA (Britain a completely different story), girls were always at rock concerts. In small numbers, mostly with the boyfriends. Van Halen brought in groups of girls/young women. Unlike KISS concerts where it's mostly boys under 16 and girls about 13, Van Halen was bringing in high school seniors and college girls. Eddie Van Halen and Davy Lee Roth were attracting female concert goers. You could actually see groups of young women early 20's at Van Halen concerts. That probably hadn't happened in any big way since Woodstock. It actually sort of hurt Van Halen's reputation as 'just party rock', which most was. But it was excellent party rock. Was it the greatest music ever? In their 'party rock' genre: Maybe. 'Hot For Teacher' won't ever be accused of trying to be "The Wall" or Trapeze "Medusa" or Rush "2112" or Sabbath "Sabbath" and "Paranoid". Van Halen was about cruising for girls the whole time. They didn't try to tone it down. I'm just glad they didn't stoop so low to take up wearing clown makeup and hiring others in disguise to do their concerts for them (KISS). Van Halen was legit. Probably overplayed on the radio back in the day. But I have lots of Van Halen happy memories (though noted in another thread, Roth completely drunk at a Houston Texas concert, they hadn't even been on stage 30 minutes when the bottle of whiskey Roth was swigging on stage went empty and he stumbled off stage I presume to look for more, never returned. We were cheering and waiting, but that 30 minutes Roth was so drunk, every song was unrecognizable or ruined. So we kinda knew he wasn't coming back). Some bands are better in the studio. I think Van Halen was one of those bands. But hey, there were lots of girls!!
I appreciate you guys keeping it real. I definitely think you would connect more with the first record. I would recommend finishing that record before this one. You already did the 2 best songs from Fair Warning. This rest of the album is quite dark (though I love it) and probably is not a great gateway to these guys!
You should start with the first song on the first album and go through some of the first albums. We're talking a band that is responsible for an entire genre. We're talking the most influential guitarist in music history and it's not even close. The debut album is one of the most monumental releases in recording history. There was an evolution that brought heavy music into the mainstream. Right before Van Halen it was Boston's debut album in 1976 followed by Journey's move into mainstream writing. Van Halen's debut album was a little bit too heavy and did scare a lot of the pop crowd but they got over it quickly when they saw Eddie's smile. Then it goes all the way from Van Halen's debut to the release of Metallica's Black album.
I think you should have gone onto “Dirty Movies” next, I think my man would’ve dug that vibe more. Then “Push comes to shove”. This album was released 42 years ago this week and remains the best rock record of all time.
Top E string tuned down to a D. Edward later invented the Dtuna. A mechanism that mounts to the bridge that you flip and it automatically tunes you down to a D.
From their debut album...Atomic Punk, On Fire and I'm the One are a much better representation of what VH was all about. Then we move to VH II and start over agin
Blue eyed murder in a size 5 dress. Is an epic line. This is a fun, dive bar, shots, beers and loose women kind of song. This is a high school summer party song.
Far and away their best album IMO. They had something to say here, which didn’t always feel like it after, they became more of a good time party band with Guns and Roses-level ego displays. But this is them in full command of their energy.
Some of my favorite Van Halen songs. Ain't talkin bout love, Hot for Teacher, I'll Wait. And you have to check out some of the Van Hagar era songs. That when Roth quit and Sammy Hagar joined the band. His songs were Poundcake, Right Now, Finish what ya started and Don't tell me what love can do.
their attempt at reggae (per the request of their producer Ted Templemen..he simply asked Ed "Can you play a reggae riff?". From that question "Push Come To Shove" was created.
Arguably one of Eddie's best riffs, and maybe one of the best riffs all time.
TOTALLY AGREE!!! AWESOME riff !!!🎸🎶⚡⚡⚡⚡
I love how one of the greatest hard rock riffs of all time didn't break these guys, but a "boring" 10 min. prog song by Genesis did. lol
People forget how great Eddie was at rhythm guitar. I have to remind everyone that. This song was definitely the life of the concert!!
It doesn’t get better than this.
Nope.
100% my fav Halen tune
The guitar in the pre-chorus is so unique. Nobody else would have come up with that
You really should check out their debut album it's 🔥 cover to cover ✌️
Alex Van Halen ; a seriously underrated drummer . " Hot For Teacher "
5:22 Yes, indeed!
Original Halen is party music! Keg party, drinkin' music! Saturday night, case of beers in the snow with a boombox, music! 🍻
Hell yeah!!!!!!!
My favorite VH record!! From start to finish, this lp is fire!! Great reaction!

This song came out approximatly a year and a half before Michael Jackson recruited Eddie Van Halen to play the guitar solo on Thriller.
On the song 'Beat It.'
@@Evie170 I was thinking Beat It, but my hands wrote thriller! Thanks!
YES!!! It's definitely a party song. One of THE best. Partied sooo many times with this in the background. Good times.
I feel like this is one of those tunes that grows on you the
more times you hear it.
I find that with a lot of van halen, and that is what makes me love them
Their best album IMO. Every song is killer.
Oh man now we talkin. I’ve listened to this jam 100 million times good as first time. That bass. And that dirty EVH grind
Easily my favorite Van Halen song.
I appreciate you guys being real about how you feel about it. Makes me realize why I might not be everyone’s cup of tea either. 🤣😂
Ain’t talkin bout Love is another one! Keep rockin fellas 😎
That odd time sig prechorus thing is so interesting when u really listen to it
1981- graduated high school….and this is on the radio…..🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️🎶❤️great reaction❤️
Fun fact I stumbled upon accidentally while reading the fantastic 1960s book "Pimp" by Iceberg Slim. The line "Blue eyed murder in a size five dress" in this song was inspired by the line "Brown skin murder in a size twelve dress".
Every one of their songs is a BANGER - that is very weird! They had so much talent! Love their background vocals.
Not really-'Jump' was/is ridiculously overrated and shitty pop-even 'I'll Wait' is better. The deep cuts are what carries 1984-the 'hits' haven't aged well.
PUMP UP!!! One of my top 5 songs of all time!!
Your audio is always THE BEST
Wow….this is probably my favorite track on the album…..funny how differently people look at things….and how differently it hits them!

You nailed it, I would speed in them 80's when playing at.
Good ole’ American rock music right here. Thanks, guys!
real van halen here, can;t this be love?🤘🎸🤘
My favorite Van Halen song.
VH is the ultimate first days of summer, cruisin' down the road with the window down & arm hangin' out - music.🌞💪🎸🎸🤩

I saw them in 81 and 84 two of the loudest shows I been to.

I remember many drunken stoned drives to the beach listening to this. Early Van Halen is serious drinking and stoning music. Nothing wrong with that. Except the driving part. No excuse, but there weren't very many cars around rural Texas back then.

Unchained comes out of the gates like a top fuel dragster!!!

Absolutely love the sound of this whole album!!!!
yea man.they were all gud up to this album but they really hit their stride on this record.

Not only did he build his own guitars, but he also rewound his pickups.
Y'all feeling that sh#t, I could tell... Lovinin it!!

This and "Mean Street" are my top 2 ever Van Halen tunes. Play them for your date and "you'll get some leg for sure" pal. LOL
Top E string tuned down to a D. Edward later invented the Dtuna. A mechanism that mounts to the bridge that you flip and it automatically tunes you down to a D.
Alex needs love for his monster drumming!!

You got a remember these guys were like teenagers when they wrote this song!

The secret to Eddie's sound is the way he tuned his guitar. I'll jut leave that here.
When you see the video, it hits harder

Haha, adjust your headphones guys at the first, nice
Try another song from this album called Push Comes To Shove. There is a more dominant bass line and has a slower groove.
their attempt at reggae (per the request of their producer Ted Templemen..he simply asked Ed "Can you play a reggae riff?". From that question "Push Come To Shove" was created.
