I was in a similar situation and my boss was happy for me. I just came to her, told her the situation and framed it like I was asking her opinion on what to do. She was thrilled for me and TOLD ME to take the job. A good boss would be happy for you.
your boss is a female?
I wish mine had this reaction. It's quite refreshing for someone who mentored you to be happy for you. Especially when you receive an opportunity of a lifetime.
What a nice grateful guy. Refreshing to hear some people care about keeping their relationships
this shows or proves absolutely nothing about the guy. if I have a crazy girlfriend and I pacify and patronize her as I leave her that's not me being nice, that's me not wanting an insane human in the world who doesn't exactly think highly of me.
don't be so easily manipulated
@@bobdole7292 dude this sound really personal. The guy is talking about relationships similar to this mentorship. What in the heck are you talking about?
I think be grateful is good but the boss is using him big time. The fact that is calling to ask this is because he can't take decision for his family. Clearly his boss/ tutor is taking advantage of him knowing well the has a family and the salary his paying is way lower. Pure selfishness from the boss/mentor/tutor.
$60,000 salary for a veterinarian in Seattle WA is horrifying. I hope this guy got out.
For someone straight out of college, that's reasonable
Vets don't make that much right out of school.
I know right. an Entry-level job pays more than that!
60,000 in Seattle for anything is just, wow! Um, for what the standard of living there, just wow! Terrible.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, the median salary for a Veterinarian in Washington state with only 1-2 years of experience, who does not own their own practice, is $92,159. 25th percentile is $70,000.
I was at one job for five years...they were angry that I now had a second job and they had to adjust; I was tired of broken promises . I got a tip that they going to fire me before the first of the month. I got angry and I started pounding pavement.. within a week, I had some interviews, then came some job offers. Once I decided, I informed them. You could see the wind knocked out of them. The next two weeks, I did only what my job required nothing extra..any calls to fill in..I ignored them. None of the managers or the owners said anything on the final shift. Go where you are appreciated, not merely tolerated.
"I'll help you pack your desk!" lololol

His "mentor" is using him. I've seen this done. Boomers think a employee will stay loyal if they train them at a young age. This is nearly 2020. Grass is always greener somewhere else.
Not true. The National average for veterinarians when I graduated in 2014 was only 65k for a brand new grad. If I heard right and this guys was out for only 3-4 months, this may be an introductionary package. After a year, he may be moved to a compensation package since most vets need time to build clientele and are actually only breaking even, if not a loss, for the business.
I had them NOT TRAIN me to a shockingly low level compared to the contract and STILL assume I would stay after they spent 6 weeks trying to hide the fact that the place doing my apprenticeship training had gone bankrupt and closed its doors. Working for peanuts I got a forklift license I could have got myself to hear "but all we gave him". Couldn't spraypaint any better than the average joe after 19 months of mixing paint and running cranes and doing everything BUT paint because the older employees "can do it faster".
Had a great mentor but horrible boss. Taught me everything just wouldnt pay me. I had to do what was best for my family.
Grass is always greener, but you still gotta mow it.
Sounds like a movie. Hmmm....... lol
Its all just a big money game. An employee's goal is to make money and as much of it as possible. The employers goal is to make money and pay YOU as little as possible. As long as you are not under contract to work somewhere, you are a free agent. Know your worth and if they cant afford you, leave.
Correct!
Needed this
Sometimes you have to leave the job because they don't want to compensate you. My old job wouldn't compensate me based on the market but new hires were coming in higher than me. Notice I said OLD job. I left and make 50% more. This an extreme case probably... but sometimes you gotta move on. Changing jobs offers a greater income increase than raises.
Sounds like you did the right thing you gotta see the cap or the wiliness of your employer to fairly compensate you I balance out what I need and what I deserve but I won’t run in circles begging for money
I had 2 sidekicks doing a job with gear the company already owned making them $80 THOUSAND A WEEK. And my sidekicks were on more than me. When they docked my pay for an extra 5 minutes at lunch I quit.
This is not too extreme of a case as you'd think! I had been at a job that paid me $50k/year in midtown Manhattan. The hours were long, and the pay was pretty bad for what I had to deal with. Got an offer for $70k/year at a firm a few blocks away, so I packed my things, handed my resignation letter to HR, and walked out. New place is 10x better than my old place.
Thank you for this Advice. This spoke to my current situation. It’s time for me to move.
The marketvalue of certain fields usually goes up faster than the value of those who took the job 10 years prior and is getting the yearly "1-3%" raise. That's why a lot of people talk about how one should try to change jobs atleast every 5 years in order to "catch" up with the market.
This makes me respect Dave even more that was really solid advice
I honestly wouldn’t care so much about the relationship. People work to make money and to make a living. If he wanted to volunteer, he could have done that. I’ve worked multiple jobs, and I think this is simple. Just give him a notice and let him know that you found another opportunity. The bottom line is that if you’re not getting what you need or really what you deserve, get the experience you need, and keep pushing! Find somewhere else where they will recognize you for your efforts or at least appreciate you. I’m learning that I don’t want to be disposable. The world is huge. Don’t settle.
Yesterday was my last day working for a company I had for 6 years. I was close to the CEO so I agreed to give 2 months notice
How did that work out?
this went from being a very dumb question to a very interesting one very quickly. great analysis by dave
You apply for other jobs. You state on the application you need to give your work 2 weeks notice. After you sign your new contract you give your current job your two weeks notice.
It’s not always possible to leave a job without a heart break...
Resigned a job after 20 years, I am 43 years old.
It was very much like going through a relationship breakup.
It was painful, and the 3 months notice period was like living with a boyfriend you just broke up with ...
Further your thoughts wing between decision and indecision.
3 month notice sounds really like. Was that a requirement ? Most places only ask for a 2 week notice.
@@teekaybe4016 since they've been there forever I'm assuming they stayed for 3 months to pass over responsibility, and train someone new, which wouldnt be possible in 2 weeks.
@@OnePanda73 Sounds like a slave to me
I’m in the same position giving my two weeks next week
update?
She was full of chit and still complaining about no raise.
Blows me away how ppl sleep at night? New baby, students loans everywhere, uncertain about job (production = commission), etc. I think too many ppl treat life like a spreadsheet and not willing to spread life out a little. It seems too many ppl view 30 as having to have everything done. Kids, marriage, career, house, etc etc
well said. exactly. not everyone's time frame shld b the same. unrealistic.
Dude, you took the words right out of my mouth.
Exactly
If possible it’s best to leave on a good note. It’s a small world and at some point you may have to work with some of the same people again. Even if the work atmosphere was horrible take the higher road.
It's a small world huh? How come I don't know you after 30 years on this earth? How come I've never see Blake Lively outside of movies?
Nava Jo
Personal experience. My line of work and the size of the city I work in makes it that way. I’m sure if I lived in New York City or moved across the country I could quit on whatever terms I wanted however my own set of values would still force me to handle myself in the same way.
With his student loans, at $60,000 he'd be living off of ramen noodles and the occasional bologna sandwich
Just give him 2 weeks notice..If He gets mad well that's too bad....!
I am a self employed bricklayer , who mainly works on massive private housing projects and I work on a price. I have this conversation atleast once every few months due to fluctuations in the housing market which directly affects our prices. And it is with contractors I've known for years. And it is still awkward every time
I think the best thing to do is just give your current boss a good amount of notice. Meet with him, take him to lunch, and let him know. You always do not want to burn your bridges too soon. I had to learn that lesson too.
+Angie Yeah, he may even want to increase the pay to keep you as an employee, since he knows the guy very well.
@dannie curlett right
Again, amazing advice from Mr. Ramsey.
people say they will be happy for you but my experience they won't. I had slept on broken furniture, the floor 4 years, I finally got my own room and better environment. The person will not talk to me after hearing I want you to do better blah blah blah.
Wow!! Did I ever need this advice. Thank you
Dave your lessons are so valuable, thank you man
I'm sure he won't be happy his worker will leave. He's been making lots of money off of this friendship.
ScarletNight how do you know that?
Well said
This is great, so helpful!
Dave is right!
Love you Dave! 🙏🏼
Being gratefull never gets old!
Had a meeting with my boss. She said “i know you’re underpaid but I can’t give you anymore money.”
I have gone to school and earned a job at a commercial/ industrial HVAC company.
I don’t start until I graduate. What mentality do I keep at my old job to not be bitter?
what mentality? "searching the ads for other job, cos it's time to search out something better that pays more"
Maybe self respect? JK but know that once you know the job is temporary, it's much easier to stick it out and not be bitter. Once you have a plan or a job lined up, you'll feel better
"Turns out you can leave here and still go to heaven" 😂😂😂
David Jorgensen 🤣🤣🤣
Solid sound advice...
Wise advice from Dave
What a great call!! I hope the caller is doing well...
Great advice Dave 👍
do you allow recorded user submissions?
Very sound and logical advise. Well done sir.
You give a two week notice. That simple.
Some of the people who call don't seem to need economical advice. Just maybe someone inteligent to talk to about their life problems.
Yep pretty much
Takeaway is don't burn the bridge when leaving one employer to join another
Mad respect
Just put in two weeks notice. This guy's mentor is using him for cheap labor. Put in two weeks notice and got out, I hope this guy put in the better option. No way I'm going to graduate school only to make 60k /year with a ton of loans.
As leaders you can definitely do what Dave says for genuine and deserving people but not the ones that waste time at work and does tomfoolery.
Think career! Move for educational reasons! Kinda get away from the money thing early in a career!
I'm a janitor where do I go from here lol
Create your own Janitorial Services firm. ❤
Every decent sized business needs a janitor. Just like a trash collector, everybody needs them.
This is kind of like what I'm going through to my boss is so cool but it's going to happen eventually within a year or two that I want more money and want to do better for my family I want better health benefits that's going to be one hard conversation I mean hopefully I don't cry or some haha
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!
“Why are they willing to pay you more?” Wow I never would have asked myself that question.
I make more then a veterinarian and did not go to college. Its possible!
Josh Matthew what career field are you in sir?
Josh Matthew
A veterinarian with his own clinic can make a lot of money! An avg Vet can make a lot more than 60k. And a Veterinarian is a very respectable profession and difficult one to be. If you are just looking at the money you miss the point!
Also he should look at Glassdoor and talk to someone who works there and see if it’s really a good place if he can (following the rules of etiquette of course)
It seems clear that this 'mentor' is using him and thinks conscious or unconsciously that the young man 'owes' him. It's not right. He sounds like a good guy but he's getting used.
Is harder to go to vet school than medical school but those going to med school will make 2-3 times more than vets! I guess people really need to love animals - which is a good thing - to do that plus benefit is animals do not answer back, sue or complain. Been a vet is much harder as an animal can not explain what is wrong with him.
that and a lot of people come to vets all
"well it's a cat/dog... can't you just charge me pennies on the dollar?"
people try to talk down the bill on human medical care, and that's smart cos it's a totally government/corporate distorted robbery machine. thio what people expect from veterinarians is like... wrong
You say I found a better job.
Is good idea . Or not
I jx went straight my manager ,I told her I resigner can't work no more . Will that be( fire)or termination
well you need to give a certain amount of notice before leaving, leaving on the spot will be in breech of your contract to not giver proper notice which generally results in voluntary termination all benefits being ceased.
Good luck with that, I hope it works.
Didnt sound like he really meant that.
Business is Business. Nothing personal.
Asking him match it
The takeaway of the advice was: just say what you think, dude!
Samadhi likes no rules
I got tired of listening to the radio and I just listen to one station it plays music that I like to play, recently when I heard you speaking on a particular station in the rainforest of my gut once again I finally went wow recently been I heard you speaking on a particular station in the rainforest of my gut once again I finally went wow
waoooo
Google people quitting Dave Ramsay’s organization. Dave stalks and tortures them.
A doc of mine says he's not a fighter. He kept telling me I'm stronger and he is a big fella he kept saying I'm stronger than he is so I finally said you want to fight just kidding anyway he said no I'm not really a fighter but women seem like it why is that he said cuz they like to win the nurse pleasantly smiled
BS !!! Exploiter do NOT care !!!
Why is this a question? Two weeks notice. Who cares how his boss feels?
You tough Mary. You remind me of Beth
Sorry Dave...It is a cult.
This guy needs to grow some balls
ZZZZZZzzzzzz
No basis in reality.
thx for service idea...a similar idea is for those (especially academics) over 65 still working who can easily afford to retire comfortably hanging on (cannibalizing the younger generations)
It is not your business what the baby boomers do. Quit blaming anyone but yourself for being a loser.
