Actually Contemporary Christian Music/Worship Music is considered a music genre. It tends to be in pop music with a soft leaning to rock, country, or gospel. If it leans heavily in those directions it gets those labels with the "Christian" label distinction. What religious conviction does is to guard words and the themes in the songs making even those without religious theme family friendly.

They're Aussie, too so I'm wondering how much the accent plays into some of vowels and such. These guys are one of my favorite Christian bands right now. I DJ at a Christian radio station and these guys hit my rotation often.
For King and Country is my favorite band of all time, and your reaction to them made me super happy😊 I’m glad you liked them! They’re a Christian pop band and they’re incredible. Their voices, their musicality, and their instrumentation is just amazing. They are the best live!
Yep, the guy on the left of the screen with the bun, is Joel. He signs the lower notes. His brother Luke, with the curly hair, always sings the higher voice 👍
I was confused on who he was analyzing too. I assume Joel as he sang more but when switched he stated “the lower guy” so couldn’t tell. He didn’t really give much feedback in the second voice.
For King & Country is my favorite band!!! I've seen them live many times and can vouch for the fact that they are that amazing every single time they play. They are not a country band, but a pop Christian band/duo. They are brothers from Australia, so that's why you're not hearing any twang in their voices. They were on CMA Christmas because they did a remix of one of their really popular songs, God Only Knows, with Dolly Parton this year. They're not well known in the country music world since that's not their usual genre, but are certainly known in the Christian music world where they are typically headliners at festivals. They released their first album in 2012, but spent most of their childhood travelling around and gaining lots of experience in the music industry because their older sister, Rebecca St. James, is also a well known Christian singer. And just as an FYI, the one who starts off singing who does the, "Ohhhs" is the lower singer, Joel. The taller one who is playing the drums with the curly hair is the higher singer, Luke. When you kept just saying "he"/"his" it was hard to tell who you were referencing, complimenting/critiquing throughout and I was totally thinking you had them flipped for the longest time.....I'm still not sure. Anyway this was interesting to watch. Definitely go listen to more of their music. They're AMAZING!
Not sure if it’s already been said this way, but upon being directly asked what genre they are during Q&A at a concert in September the response was they aren’t particularly concerned about that, just that people can relate to God’s messages through their music (paraphrase because I was there for the experience and not taking notes haha). Sidenote, I grew up listening to country radio in the 90s and beyond and started getting into contemporary Christian music almost 2 years ago after being Born Again. They are my favorite band and it is such a blessing watching them play my favorite Christmas song on this country music stage. Also cool learning a bit about the intricacies of voice.
Oh! I loved this one for so many reasons. Great explanation of passagios! I really enjoyed the duo's harmony and how well they listened to each other, you can tel that they have been singing together for quite a while. Also I love how you always point out that even if something is not exactly technically well-advised on regular basis it can still give you the desired effect during a short performance and how well you explain how you would work to change that and ensure the safety of voice
Actually, imagine Dragons and Mumford and Sons probably got Inspired by them because for KING & COUNTRY have been recording as a band and with their sister Rebecca St James since 1993. They've released many albums on their own and with Rebecca and have traveled around the world MANY MANY times, and have been heard on many many Christian radio stations and at many many many churches. Chances are high that you probably heard some of their other songs and didn't know it was them singing
Imagine Dragons is a band they are inspired by in an article I've read. For King and Country has put on the best live shows I've ever seen. They are just amazing.
I really appreciate that you had no clue who they were and gave such awesome feedback! I am enjoying all your videos. This one has my heart not only bc it’s my favorite band, but because you had no clue what to expect unlike other artists you’ve done. Can’t wait for more videos, and hoping you do some more for king and country songs in the future ❤️
Great review! I was impressed by your ability to capture with words what they were doing with their voices. Thank you for reviewing this band as well. I'm sure you've already seen everyone else's comments, so I won't go there. What I thought was especially great was how you were able to in a way sense the connection between the two singers (brothers who have been singing since their teens) by listening to the way they harmonized. Again, excellent review!
I keep trying to figure out if you know who's who lol because you'll talk about Joel's mouth shape but then you start talking about Luke's high voice. Basically: the guy with the ponytail where you talk about vowel shape is Joel, he sings lower; the guy with curly hair on the drum is Luke, he sings the high "falsetto"
Joel is the one who started with the intro vocal. Luke is the higher singer (playing the tom drum with the curly hair) throughout the song. Love their version of the song it's the best!
Chuck Wright oh I agree he does have a wider range but if you listen to most of their songs like sings more of the higher parts I think probably because his falsetto is really distinctive
@@Sparkle132 yes I would agree with that...and I still think he can go lower than Luke can also...and if you hear his long "yeeeaaahh" in between "I played my drum for him" and then "I played my best for him" - it's an incredibly rich sound. If you don't remember that part specifically, that " yeah," go back and listen. it's amazing. The whole thing was. I love their writing, their music, their passion, but Joel is the world class talent of the group. Great showman too.
This is one of my all-time favorite bands. They’re actually a Christian band with country crossover appeal they did a duet with Dolly Parton. So they kind of crossed into the country genre. The lead singers are both brothers from Australia which may be part of their intonation and vowel choices. I really love their song.Joy you need to check it out.
You are amazing to me. So knowledgeable, so relatable. I enjoy your videos, and even being a trained professional musician, I have learned from you. Keep up the great work, Sam!
Wow Sam your videos are mind blowing 🤯 I never knew there was so much to singing I just always thought they open their mouth and it comes out perfect. You make me wanna learn how to sing properly.
One of my favorite Christmas songs! Thanks for reacting to it Sam. Your analysis was very insightful and I will be applying (or trying to apply) some of what you said. Hard-working musicians/singers can and should be recognized and appreciated regardless of genre. Sam did just that. Great video Sam!
They are great. Not only can they sing but I don't know if there's an instrument they can't play. They put on a really great show. I have volunteered for their showing many times. They take great care of their volunteers & they love their fans.
This is my favorite Christian Duo band, not only can they sing, deliver a more than exceptional and intensely high energy show, but Joel also acts. & above all- they use their gifts to minister and help their fans and music lovers to Christ. They minister to men about the value of a woman and minister to women and young females about their worth and worthy men. They genuinely love their fans and care for each of them. They’re love for their wives is admirable and the depth of their songs’ meanings and lyrics is life changing. #ForKingAndCountry is using their platform for Gods kingdom and God is busting doors wide open and breaking barriers through this amazing music group! God bless
Nice video! I love for KING and COUNTRY I saw them perform live in concert a few months ago and they are so amazing live and such inspiring and dedicated people. They write beautiful songs too.
I believe they refer to themselves as a pop duo, or alternative rock. They did sing one song with Dolly Parton which I think is why they were there to begin with.
One thing is watching a vid and listening but actually being there and seeing the same, flawless performance where so much creativity is happening all around you with these guys is EXHILARATING!!! And yes, Luke has a unique voice. All their music is unique, creative, and high quality. They redid this song in such an amazing way 🔥🙌🏻
for KING & COUNTRY are Melbourne Australia born brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone who got their training via singing backup for their also famous sister Rebecca St James (born Rebecca Jean Smallbone-Fink), and their father and music producer David Smallbone. Joel and Luke toured and recorded with Rebecca for MANY years in the Contemporary Christian Music genre until she went on hiatus to get married and start a family which segued into them starting their own band. I've been a huge fan of their entire family and other musical collaborations since 1994. Highly recommended. Check them out
I just found you, but the first vid i saw of you was from a year ago with your long hair and shaved face and then i see this and i thought you gave your channel away to another person XD you look so DIFFERENT! I love your channel so far! Youre really kind and well spoken! Its really nice to watch
These guys are seriously talented. They talk about their childhood being on the road, their Sister is older and was touring (their father was her manager) so they have been around music their entire lives. You should listen to some of their other music, the new album is called "Burn the Ships"... My favorite song by them is "Priceless", give it a listen. (It's about the value of a human life)
Nutshell background for the band: The two up front are brothers, born in Australia, their dad is a music promoter and their sister preceded them in the industry. They moved from Australia to Nashville 25ish years ago, so when they were pretty young. I don’t know the training exactly, but with their sister’s success in the 90s/early 00s, the family had access to a LOT of talented coaches and producers. They have been in the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) genre (it’s a thing, kind of like there’s a difference between rock and alternative), but have had inroads to a more mainstream audience a couple times. This most recent opportunity is because of Dolly Parton joining them in a song on their latest project, titled Burn the Ships. They had been at the CMA awards the week before to sing that song with Dolly. Please don’t compare them to Imagine Dragons. That hurts me on a fundamental level, I dislike Imagine Dragons so...
The timber of their music is just as bright and atmospheric as a lot of Imagine Dragons' popular tracks, but the difference here is that you feel the soul coming from this music. I.D.'s music does not have that because it's obviously cookie-cutter and written more for radio airtime than anything else. Edit: Imagine Dragons is commercial music; this is just music
Christopher Lapensee I agree 100% with them being commercial music. And there’s nothing wrong with doing music made to be popular. Justin Timberlake and Maroon 5 have made careers out of that. But they’ve just got...yeah, that lack of soul. So it falls flat to me and I’ll either change the channel or tune them out when they come up.
I was surprised to find that I enjoyed your critique of Joel and Luke Smallbone. Based on your comments about how well they work together, I'm sure you won't be surprised to learn that they are brothers. They were raised around music. (Their father was a music promoter.). They have an older sister, Rebecca St. James, who has been a Christian recording star since the mid-to-late 1990's. They sang back-up for her and others before forming their own group (duo). Their voices blend beautifully, in a fashion rarely seen beyond family bonds.

It's made me notice my own habits when singing! Thank you so much!! It's refreshing to come across someone so enthusiastic and encouraging to all level of singers and provide genuine & kind constructive feedback. Also... The Little Drummer Boy is a classic Christmas song that’s been around for a really long time. . And I’ve heard that these guys have amazing live shows. And they aren’t country.
I absolutely love For King and Country. I have seen them at least 5 times in person and they are AMAZING everytime. I have loved them since they released "Proof Of Your Love" on their first album. I am so happy to see them getting this praise about how well they sing. I also love to see them becoming so popular like the God Only Knows remix with Echosmith and Timbaland.
Yeah, I think it's only because they collabed with Dolly Parton, who is famous for country music. But they were put on the show by themselves without her, so maybe that means the CMA Awards like them?
@@BuzzDoesDisney If you look the video up it's from this year 2019. It was on the country channel, I just watched the show since we (my family) had dvr'd it.
@@RaiynesRambles There were others on that weren't Country singers. Kristin Chenoweth known for being on Broadway and CeCe Winans a gospel singer. Maybe it's cuz they're all good artists. I really enjoyed the whole show.
What I just learned is they came from Australia to the US a number of years back. The lower singer(Joel) spoke of recently becoming a US citizen. How much does accent blend play a role in ease/difficulty of vocal reach, if any? Yes, they do genre a CHRISTIAN Band w/ Country and Pop character mixed in.

They're Aussie, too so I'm wondering how much the accent plays into some of vowels and such. These guys are one of my favorite Christian bands right now. I DJ at a Christian radio station and these guys hit my rotation often.
I'm so glad they're getting more exposure. i saw them live and they were amazing.
His dry humor gives me life. 💖
Oh, and the reactions are great too.
For King and Country is my favorite band of all time, and your reaction to them made me super happy😊 I’m glad you liked them! They’re a Christian pop band and they’re incredible. Their voices, their musicality, and their instrumentation is just amazing. They are the best live!
their sisters vocals are good too
I've seen them! They are amazing live and the drums make it so more unique and amazing.
I'm not positive but I think that he's thinking the curly haired guy sings low, and the other brother is the high pitch. It's the other way around.
Yep, the guy on the left of the screen with the bun, is Joel. He signs the lower notes.
His brother Luke, with the curly hair, always sings the higher voice 👍
Yes it is Luke sings higher pitch and Joel sings low
I think he is confused also.
I was confused on who he was analyzing too. I assume Joel as he sang more but when switched he stated “the lower guy” so couldn’t tell. He didn’t really give much feedback in the second voice.
@@jillianboots6067 that's true but mostly Joel is the one that sings lower and Luke higher pitch🤔
The mystery of one of my favorite bands explored by sam is funny and educational at the same time. Awesome video, Sam!
We have the same last name! 💙
Low voice man is Joel & high voice man is Luke. Brothers. Australian. Christian not country. And yes they are awesome!
For king & country is one of my favorite bands ever! Saw them at winter jam years back and loved the performance. My inner bandgeek was freaking out!
Totally agree! The bandgeek loves how they use the brass!
Same! I saw them play at Winter Jam in Shreveport, La. They’re amazing!
Love For King and Country! This is my favorite version this song too!
The guy singing “higher” is the other guy. Just giving you a headsup
Tyler Holman Yeah
Yeah i was so confused by him the whole time
They sound like an exact genetic cross of Imagine Dragons and Mumford & Sons
Check out Mutemath and Paul Meany for a more apt comparison.
Better, more passion, but yeah...
Imagine Dragons = We Are Messengers
Mumford & Songs = Rend Collective
brother you morphed into a play-by-play commentator when he took his vowel vertically😂😂 you looked like he sunk a half-court Hail Mary at the buzzer
😂😂😂 Well stated!
I enjoyed this reaction and analysis of KING & COUNTRY(!!)'s Little Drummer Boy
“Now he is going into beautiful singing!!” Lol you got so excited!! Love this video. For king and country is awesome they are brothers.
Sam, I just kinda stumbled across your page yesterday and I can’t stop watching you are amazing! 👏🏼
These too brothers are crazy talented and have big passion about what they do. I hope u will check more from them.
Love your stuff, Sam! One of the most talented, humble, and positive voice teachers on UA-cam by far.
And it's not low and high...Joel has more range than Luke on both ends. Luke is very good. Joel is all world.
Chuck Wright I love all their albums but I agree Joel has a great presence on stage. And a powerful vocal
@@Sparkle132 no one should be that handsome, talented, and charismatic!!!...LOL. he's fun to watch. I love their choreographed moves up front...
You were mistaking the high and low singers. The small vowel shapes was the brother singing lower.
Wow Sam your videos are mind blowing 🤯 I never knew there was so much to singing I just always thought they open their mouth and it comes out perfect. You make me wanna learn how to sing properly.
I have to be honest, I clicked for Sam's face on the thumbnail more than for the song.
Watching this makes me love for King&Country even more absolutely amazing
Yay!! I’ve loved their music for a few years now. They’re brothers originally from Australia 🇦🇺
Sam =) I LOVE DRUMS SO MUCH. Thank you for posting this performance. Merry Christmas Sam. XOX
Their music is actually Contemporary Christian and the two singers are brothers.
A religious affiliation isn't a genre.
It's a sub-genre. Christian Rock. Christian Rap....
@@itscoreyagain don't mind him, norist is really triggered by this apparently lol
Ae Norist Tell that to all the Christian recording labels that are out there lol
Me DUDE right?? He’s really triggered xD
The curly haired guy on the right is the one who is singing higher.
That curly haired guy has a name its name is Luke I'm not trying to be mean its that they have a name too
didn't know names of the individual group members
I knew that 😂 sorry for my miss spelled words
Luke has curly hair, Joel has the bun
The "low voice man" the "high voice man" lol just cracks me up when he calls them that. 😆
Alao, thank you, I did learn a few things here.
Seen them live twice and they are so amazing. They never disappoint
They redid this song in such an amazing way 🔥🙌🏻
Seeing them in concert soon. Can't wait!
Enjoy ! Mind blowing show.
Me too, second row seats!!! Super excited!!😇
You won’t be disappointed!!! They’re awesome!
Love it when his jaw drops when Joel takes his turn! LOVE FOR KING & COUNTRY :) :) :)
You need to check out their live version of Oh Come Emmanuel live in Phoenix. That's amazing. Their whole Christmas album from last year was amazing.
for KING & COUNTRY are Melbourne Australia born brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone who got their training via singing backup for their also famous sister Rebecca St James (born Rebecca Jean Smallbone-Fink), and their father and music producer David Smallbone.
I saw for king and country once live. Great band! Lots of energy and good singing
Wow, I love that you reacted to them. They are very creative.
i love when you react to and analyze for KING & COUNTRY.
Your introduction to the video is perfect, I'd have a hard time keeping a straight face.
They are not country! Lol. Yay I love this group! Their sister Rebecca St. James was one of my favorites growing up. Nice review.
Me too. I grew up listening to and loving her. I can remember the first time I saw her concert when I was 11 or 12.
How did I miss that she was their sister?!?!?! First cassette I ever had was one of hers! (First CD too lol) read a bunch of her books
This just blew my mind. REBECCA ST. JAMES IS THEIR SISTER!?!? Well that makes so much sense.
What ?? I had no idea that was their sis. Word. Music in da fam. Love it.
The appreciation and analysis you show is so much fun to watch
These guys are seriously talented. They talk about their childhood being on the road, their Sister is older and was touring (their father was her manager) so they have been around music their entire lives. You should listen to some of their other music, the new album is called "Burn the Ships"... My favorite song by them is "Priceless", give it a listen. (It's about the value of a human life)
I'm so happy to see you analyzing a song from my favorite band! Glad to see other people recognize the talent I love!!
I love For King and Country! Yay!😍
They’re brothers. I love when family members sing together cuz their vocal timbre blends so nice.
I gotta be honest, was not expecting you to react to for KING & COUNTRY🤣 also as MANY people have pointed out, they aren't a country band
And it was a Christmas performance, and Drummer Boy is proper Christmas genre song...
To really appreciate their talent...you MUST see them live in concert. They are amazing!! 🎤🎼
They remind me of Imagine Dragons also. It’s the drums and slightly overwrought production that’s all.
Christopher Lapensee I get it. I just really don’t like Imagine Dragons.
@@MemBirdman
They are terrible
Christopher Lapensee I agree 100% with them being commercial music. And there’s nothing wrong with doing music made to be popular. Justin Timberlake and Maroon 5 have made careers out of that. But they’ve just got...yeah, that lack of soul. So it falls flat to me and I’ll either change the channel or tune them out when they come up.
This is my FAVORITE all-time Christmas video. Favorite Christmas Carol bumped up several notches. ⭐️⭐️👍
Recently found your channel this past month and have been binge-watching all the vids. I sing as alto in a choir and i find your explanations so relatable and helpful. It's made me notice my own habits when singing! Thank you so much!! It's refreshing to come across someone so enthusiastic and encouraging to all level of singers and provide genuine & kind constructive feedback. Also... Your sense of humour absolutely tickles me 😂 love it
The Little Drummer Boy is a classic Christmas song that’s been around for a really long time.
I also love to see them becoming so popular like the God Only Knows remix with Echosmith and Timbaland.
for KING AND COUNTRY are amazing!
They are brothers and that's why they mesh so well.
Probs thought they were country since this was on CMA Christmas which CMA is country. Sooooo. Ya.
Maybe they were on there because of there collaboration with Dolly Parton on God Only Knows? I liked it though!
Yeah, I think it's only because they collabed with Dolly Parton, who is famous for country music. But they were put on the show by themselves without her, so maybe that means the CMA Awards like them?
CMA also stands for Christian Music Awards, and this video is from around 2015, and the Dolly collaboration was in 2019.
For a crazy “Country” act, check out Orville Peck.
I’d love for you to listen/react to more King and Country! They are awesome!
Heidi Davison I found Orville Peck from a Bon Appetit video lol
So excited! This is by far my favorite song because of the style they put on it. I listen to it on repeat 🙌🏻 my kids hate me 😂
When U said "I wonder how their training has been." proof me you really lovely and respect hardworks. Btw can you react for Dangdut song. I dont know the title. But I just curious about your opinion with this genre. Thank you
Those two are brothers, and they are SO good! Their live shows are amazing
