I get the share transport in the city. Just hop on and wait for the mini bus to fill up. There's a coffee shop just a few metres from the minibus stop. I got my lunch there. it's local food.
Hi John. Congrats for climbing the mountain and such a great material from Kinabalu. Very refreshing and informative! A couple of questions on the topic: - How much in advance one needs to book their accommodation with Sutera Sanctuary Lodges? We plan to organize the climb in 3 months time, ie. beginning of Feb 2020. - If we manage to book the same option as yourself, ie. 3 days 2 nights, is it possible to sort out some paperwork in advance upon arrival (Day 1) in the Head Office, so we don't need to wake up that early next morning? I understand there're queues everywhere to have one's paperwork done, guide assigned, etc. We'd rather avoid it if possible, hence the question... Thank you.
Hi, I coordinate my flight after I ensured I had a bed at the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges. So you might want to check with the lodges for availability first before you book your flight. Alternatively there are other accommodations nearby where you can book but you might need to take a transport to the national reserve first thing in the morning. The guide will only be assigned to you on the day of the climb itself. However you can get the climbing permit one day before the climb at the head office. Depending on the crowd, you may or may not need to queue. Same goes with the morning when you book the guide. I woke u about 6 am to have my breakfast. It was a slow morning. After breakfast I went to get the guide. It was not a rush breakfast and the guide assignment was a pretty quick process. After I have my guide assigned, I walk around to take some selfies and I only started the hike at about 8.45am I think. Hope these helps.
Hi John! Absolutely amazing vlog! Very informative and I just love your vlogging style! Do you mind telling me what camera and microphone you used for vlogging? Looking forward to your reply!
Hi, You get your guide at the national park when you pay for the permit in the park. The details for my accommodation is in the description above. I was only there for 3 days 2 night. :)
sorry for the late reply. sometimes the route could be slippery depending on the weather. any shoe with traction would be great. I did see some people with sneakers. I was wearing my Northface Ultrafastpack II
Great vlog! im planning to go climb the mount in the future. did you make the whole expedition package payment at the national park office? did you have to make the payment like months before the expedition?
Hi, I paid for the accommodation 2 weeks before the climb to secure a bed. Once I paid for the accommodation at the sutra lodge, they will automatically reserved a climbing permit slot. I can pay the permit fee and insurance on the day of the climb at the park office which is just metres from the lodge.
John Fabian, It was an insightful video, really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing your experience:-) was the climb from Laban Rata to the Summit tough? Moreover it was at midnight. Did you get the AMS? Thanks Fabian! :-)
Hi Jay, sorry for teh late reply. The Hike from Laban Rata to the summit was tough. But it's do-able if you take your time. If you are planning to see the sun rise at the summit, you might need to be fit. I did not get any AMS. I think the key is not to eat too much the night before. Get enough carbs and cut down on the meat. Hope this helps.
Woww, thank you for the vlog!! I will climb this year * i wish*. May I know how much you paid for accommodation at sutra lodge and all climb package? Thank you for your sharing
wonderful experience! Thank you for sharing

Wow the bunk bed and meals were a luxury. Other cheaper options?
It's the same package for everyone at the middle of the mountain . SO I guess there's no option
