Hello from Oregon, USA -- Thank-you very much for this beautifully produced and quite relaxing video hike up Mt. Kinabalu. In the Spring of 1978, I met up with a couple of friends from The Netherlands in Kota Kinabalu and we decided to climb Mt. Kinabalu before travelling to the eastern part of Sabah for a planned 2-month self-guided canoe trip up the Segama River. Tourism in Borneo wasn't really a thing 44 years ago, and aside from a day use shelter at the park entrance, there were no accommodations or other infrastructure for visitors. Climbs were self-guided on a sketchy, undeveloped trail up the mountain through pristine forest with an abundance of various pitcher plant species, with the only lodging being an unattended stone hut with wooden bunks to rest before the summit push. We stayed on the mountain for 3 days without seeing any other people, but upon returning to the park entrance, ran into a group of Nepali Gurkha soldiers preparing to climb the mountain. Stationed in Hong Kong but in Borneo for training, these elite members of the British Army were all ethnic Gurungs from the mountainous Annapurna region of the Himalayas in North-Central Nepal. Coincidentally, I had travelled to Borneo myself from that very region of Nepal, where I had lived and worked for 3 years in a remote, traditional Gurung village NW of Pokhara. I had left Nepal 1 month earlier and was on my way back to Oregon when I ended up in Borneo. So yeah, small world. Anyway, old guy here with lots of stories just missing the good old days and my youth. Thanks again for helping to bring up these memories of what was an adventurous and really fun time in my life. Best wishes.
Wow! What a story you have!
It would have been so different climbing Mount Kinabalu 44 years ago!
What a great story you have, thanks for watching! 😀
Respect! I'm 16 years old n live in sabah.. But until now, never go there😐... Wish one day I will go there
Oh we hope you get to climb there one day! 😁
Thanks for filming this beauty of Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia! The sacrifices in deed was worthy. It’s so beautiful!
Your welcome! Happy you liked it 😀
I’m loving how real, detailed this vlog is to share your experiences climbing mount Kinabalu. Now I know what to expect and be prepared beforehand. Thank you for this and hope to see more vlogs like this in the future! 💕

Amazingly beautiful video. 👍👍
I've climbed it twice when i was 18 and 21. Now i am 58 but i still want to go there for the last time..There were no restaurant at PanarLaban during those years. May be i will bring my family this time. I lost all my pics back then. By the way , i am a local, Dusun tribe.
Thank you and wow, you've climbed it twice? That's amazing, I'm sure it is easier now as there are lots of steps especially after the earthquake. Did you have to camp overnight? We would like to go back too. We did a tour of the Mari-Mari Cultural Village and learnt all about the local tribes, we really enjoyed it!

Even as Malaysians, we haven't tick off this bucket list! Thanks for the video you both, please come back to Malaysia for more beautiful destinations 😍
oh wow thank you so much! We LOVE Malaysia! We are going back in Dec/Jan...what/where do you recommend? 😊
@@MikeandKawan End of December and January is where the strong festive vibe starts! There will be Christmas deco and right after that everyone will switch to Chinese New Year Mood. Pretty "tanglungs" (lanterns) are everywhere and we will be busy preparing for the festival. Best time to enjoy Chinese New Year cookies and foood. Malacca would be a great choice for food and heritage trip!
@@TheMostWantedTravel we are so excited, we are heading to KL/Perak this trip but we are already thinking of another trip to include Johor and Melaka and Terrenganu would be nice too.
@@MikeandKawan not sure if you've been to semporna yet but if you haven't, its an amazing place. Its in the east coast of Sabah and its pretty insane. It looks exactly like the Maldives and the experience there is world class. You can come across enormous shoals of fishes while diving as well. Its truly a surreal experience.
Try hike gunung datuk, yong belar, and korga
I'm praying that I can visit Mt. Kinabalu one day. Need to work harder so I can save money for my trip here one day soon.

Wow! It’s like you had the mountain to yourself, you are lucky! 😀
Bring back memories when I did it on 2015. Such a wonderful place regards to my guide who gave as moral support. Thanks.
Was that before the earthquake?
Thanks for the video! I went there in October last year and wanted to say thanks! It was probably the most memorable hike I've done so far. This video helped me know what to expect. The views from the summit were absolutely ridiculous, like nothing else on this planet.
Oh wow, congratulations on your climb and thank you very much for your comment! That has to be one of the nicest comments we've had 😍. We'd love to go back and do it again, or maybe try the via ferrata next.
I may be a wee bit bias since this is my Nephew and his Gorgeous wife, but the stuff they do brings adventure to a whole new level. I am loving being able to live life Vicariously through there eyes.
Rewatching all the time! Giving me serious training motivation ♥️

Thank you so much for watching and it makes us so happy if it can help you! Have you climbed it already?
climbed this in 2000, amazing how everyone has "all the gear" now. most non-asians were shorts and t shirts most of the way with socks on their hands towards the summit, we only thought to go up once we decided to roam around Borneo a bit.
Probably a lot to do with UA-cam and the ability to google everything now. I must admit I didn't think it would get that cold up there especially having lived in Malaysia for many years. It would have been a fair bit different in 2000, as that would have been before the earthquake - less stairs then too I've been told.
To reach the peak is a great individual achievement in life. I had the experience reaching the top in the 70s and the accommodation is not as waht you experience today.
Oh wow! That would have been amazing - I wish we could see what it was like then. I know that even since the earthquake in 2015, things have changed quite a bit. Congratulations to you and we agree, it's certainly a great personal achievement we will remember for the rest of our lives.
Thanks for sharing! Looks amazing! We are going here next year...
How exciting! What month are you going? We did the climb/hike late April and it was just magnificent!

I went to Sabah on July 2019 for my friend’s wedding. I didn’t have the chance to go to Kinabalu mountain. But I stayed in Kundasang somewhere on the hill side, and I could see all the hikers’ headlamp in Kinabalu at 2.00 am though it seemed far away from my place. Wish I could hike this mountain one day! Good vlog anyway! 👍🏻
Cool! 😀

Oh wow 🤩 I’d love to go there, looks so beautiful 😍
It's hard tiring , don't be fooled by the amazing view, prepare well before you go
It is beautiful! 🇲🇾😀
I hv my own memories on this mountain back in 1983,at that time Panar Laban was different cos theres no restaurant or what ,you have to bring and cook your own food, there was only dorm to sleep with sleeping bags for each. since I was with students friends ,about 20 of us, it seems cooking was not a problem for me .lol.
watching this video bring back all those memories. And tq so much for this . 🤗
Wow that would have a totally amazing experience and I'm sure a lot tougher having to carry and cook your own food too. So glad you enjoyed seeing this, thank you for watching :-)

I climbed the mountain back in 2008 via another trail known as Mesilau trail (10km). It was so much exciting. But its no longer passable due to earthquake. Would like to try Timpohon trail in the future..💪

Been up 5 times and climb was different. Let the porter to carry your bagpack. Just carry a small 20-30 ltr piece to store your water and rations. Sleep early and you'll be fresh to attack the summit. Breathe slowly and take small steps to conserve your energy and do use the poles on your way down. Most of all, enjoy the hike
