I'm an Anglo but I spend time in Scotland and all this anti English sentiment are usually sour grapes. When Scotland fucks up, it's England fault for some reason. I could argue why the Scottish shouldn't leave like in our tax brackets they get taxed the least and given the most in benefits and are grieving more stuff than the English don't (free medication, free university, free home care for the elderly). I love that he has so many flaws and downsides, while not being "villainous"(that depends on how you view him, though, but still) That's also something I appreciate about Hetalia characters as a whole. I'm glad Hima didn't make nations into some perfect angels that are pure of heart and can do no wrong. Most of them live for more than a thousand of years. Surely, they've done some cruel and downright amoral stuff at some point in the past. It’s my understanding that a lot of the most popular pairings in the fandom feature England because he’s quite a popular character. Yes, we like to hate him, but ultimately imo he’s a really fun, interesting character who a lot of people find really entertaining (and even relatable). Because of this, I’ve noticed that a lot of people will pair him with their favourite character or the character that represents their own country. For example, Asakiku is very popular in Japan, USUK in America, RusEng in Russia, etc.

As a British person England is my favourite purely because of how stereotypical he is - and also he's funny as hell. For the longest time, many men and women were sailors / worked on boats but could not swim. The ability to swim was not a requirement for the longest time. I assume England not knowing how to swim is kind of a weird carry-over of that strange history fact (considering how old he is). Only recently have ships required some level of swimming prowess in order to be a part of staff.

@@n25783 British and Russians historically get along poorly with each other, despite the fact that we had meaningful alliances, England was a country that always secretly created problems in the development of the Russian economy, it was because of these endless sticks in each other's wheels that both countries suffered from Russophobia and Anglophobia.
It's kind of funny England has so many ships. You guys think that many people can tolerate him? Seriously though, I find him difficult to ship. I only ship EngPort, and I'm neutral to FrUK. England x literally anyone he colonized is...uncomfortable (to put it delicately) because of history (and yes, that includes America). I've already ranted about my other reasons for disliking USUK on the USUK video. And England/China makes me uncomfortable because of history. Anyways EngPort is the most shippable England ship.
I think part of it is because, while the characters in Hetalia are heavily based on stereotypes and cultural references and are shown to represent nations, there are little bits in there which would probably be more accurate to say are feel like they represent the 'humans' in the characters (i.e. Arthur, Feliciano, Ludwig etc.) rather than the nations themselves. For example, 'America' is afraid of horror films, but that joke definitely feels like an 'Alfred F. Jones' thing, not an 'American' thing in general. Or 'England' is a tsundere, but that joke doesn't feel like it's implying 'English' people are typically tsundere, but 'Arthur Kirkland' is. So when it comes to shipping - I think what happens is some people focus more on 'reality' and the 'nations' aspect, while others enjoy more the 'humans' behind the nations. And in real life, when history and politics gets involved, I don't think any Hetalia pairing can stand as a 'healthy' one - because most of the time everyone's in for their own gains, playing an elaborate chess game with no genuine feeling. But Hetalia isn't about that. Hetalia's a world where nations are people, and to some extent, probably have human feelings different to what they feel as a nation. I don't believe England would have wept out of any reason other than losing an important colony during the American Independence War, but I can believe Arthur wept because he genuinely cared for Alfred as a little brother who he wished wouldn't have grown up. I think the mix of identities in the characters is what makes different pairings and interactions so interesting in Hetalia, especially when 'bosses' start getting involved too. But to go back to the topic of England having a lot of ships, I'd say overall most people love England because they love Arthur, and not the other way round. When people ship England, I think most people actually ship 'Arthur's personality', rather than the reality behind England's acts as a nation. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. @@TheClearSummer Most, or a lot, of the traits in Hetalia characters reflect the nation in some way. A lot of British people have the whole "stiff upper lip" or just prefer not to show their true emotions, which is probably where the tsundere thing comes from. I guess that the irl history politics thing is true to an extent, but I still prefer pairings that have some sort of irl basis. They are still countries, after all. And since they're also people, they have human emotions, and are capable of caring about others. I tend to get touchy about Revolutionary War discourse because of victim blaming of America; it's England's own fault America left, and he was quite frankly a terrible parent. But I agree England did care about America. I don't actually care that other people ship so many people with England; I just find him difficult to ship.

I wasn't trying to say any of this to invalidate your opinions or perspectives, by the way - I personally enjoy a little bit of both (i.e. Historical/IRL based relationships, as well as sometimes entirely human!AUs without any of the politics or history involved), so hope I didn't come across that way. But for me what I'm really interested in is the line that distinguishes the 'human' and the 'nation', if there is a line at all. Like I said, I think a lot of people enjoy 'Arthur' over England, and probably subconsciously differentiate between them to some extent in shipping etc. Also, while true to some extent, I think tsundere especially relates to difficulty showing true affection rather than true emotion, and that's not what a 'stiff upper lip' really means. I get where you're coming from and how the 2 might be linked, but I think for me as a Brit this is 1 of the cases where I draw the line between a national stereotype and something strictly related to the character (even though I agree that those personality traits are just exaggerations of the true stereotype e.g. China liking cute things, France's tendency to strip, Italy's air-headedness etc.) Anyway, there's nothing wrong with finding England hard to ship. I totally respect that and hope you don't feel like I'm trying to change your mind. I agree though - the real history of the American Independence is not so rose tinted or simple, and Hetalia's version is probably focused more on the characters' personal drama than the history.

It's kind of funny England has so many ships. You guys think that many people can tolerate him? Seriously though, I find him difficult to ship. I only ship EngPort, and I'm neutral to FrUK. England x literally anyone he colonized is...uncomfortable (to put it delicately) because of history (and yes, that includes America). I've already ranted about my other reasons for disliking USUK on the USUK video. And England/China makes me uncomfortable because of history. Anyways EngPort is the most shippable England ship.
I think part of it is because, while the characters in Hetalia are heavily based on stereotypes and cultural references and are shown to represent nations, there are little bits in there which would probably be more accurate to say are feel like they represent the 'humans' in the characters (i.e. Arthur, Feliciano, Ludwig etc.) rather than the nations themselves.
For example, 'America' is afraid of horror films, but that joke definitely feels like an 'Alfred F. Jones' thing, not an 'American' thing in general. Or 'England' is a tsundere, but that joke doesn't feel like it's implying 'English' people are typically tsundere, but 'Arthur Kirkland' is.
So when it comes to shipping - I think what happens is some people focus more on 'reality' and the 'nations' aspect, while others enjoy more the 'humans' behind the nations. And in real life, when history and politics gets involved, I don't think any Hetalia pairing can stand as a 'healthy' one - because most of the time everyone's in for their own gains, playing an elaborate chess game with no genuine feeling.
But Hetalia isn't about that. Hetalia's a world where nations are people, and to some extent, probably have human feelings different to what they feel as a nation. I don't believe England would have wept out of any reason other than losing an important colony during the American Independence War, but I can believe Arthur wept because he genuinely cared for Alfred as a little brother who he wished wouldn't have grown up.
I think the mix of identities in the characters is what makes different pairings and interactions so interesting in Hetalia, especially when 'bosses' start getting involved too. But to go back to the topic of England having a lot of ships, I'd say overall most people love England because they love Arthur, and not the other way round. When people ship England, I think most people actually ship 'Arthur's personality', rather than the reality behind England's acts as a nation.

@@TheClearSummer Most, or a lot, of the traits in Hetalia characters reflect the nation in some way. A lot of British people have the whole "stiff upper lip" or just prefer not to show their true emotions, which is probably where the tsundere thing comes from.
I guess that the irl history politics thing is true to an extent, but I still prefer pairings that have some sort of irl basis. They are still countries, after all. And since they're also people, they have human emotions, and are capable of caring about others.
I tend to get touchy about Revolutionary War discourse because of victim blaming of America; it's England's own fault America left, and he was quite frankly a terrible parent. But I agree England did care about America.
I don't actually care that other people ship so many people with England; I just find him difficult to ship.

I wasn't trying to say any of this to invalidate your opinions or perspectives, by the way - I personally enjoy a little bit of both (i.e. Historical/IRL based relationships, as well as sometimes entirely human!AUs without any of the politics or history involved), so hope I didn't come across that way. But for me what I'm really interested in is the line that distinguishes the 'human' and the 'nation', if there is a line at all. Like I said, I think a lot of people enjoy 'Arthur' over England, and probably subconsciously differentiate between them to some extent in shipping etc.
Also, while true to some extent, I think tsundere especially relates to difficulty showing true affection rather than true emotion, and that's not what a 'stiff upper lip' really means. I get where you're coming from and how the 2 might be linked, but I think for me as a Brit this is 1 of the cases where I draw the line between a national stereotype and something strictly related to the character (even though I agree that those personality traits are just exaggerations of the true stereotype e.g. China liking cute things, France's tendency to strip, Italy's air-headedness etc.)
Anyway, there's nothing wrong with finding England hard to ship. I totally respect that and hope you don't feel like I'm trying to change your mind. I agree though - the real history of the American Independence is not so rose tinted or simple, and Hetalia's version is probably focused more on the characters' personal drama than the history.
@@TheClearSummer I agree that the Hetalia stereotypes are exaggerated, and I know American Revolution is simplified, and it wasn't as...nostalgic in real life. Hetalia tends to simplify history to parody it, after all. And I don't think you're actually trying to change my mind, don't worry. It's fine if people have different perspectives.
