You can read about toyota sera in the Driving Ambitions book. You know, the official book for McLaren F1 written by Gordon Murray. Page 50. There's even a picture of the Toyota Sera in it.
Should be starred comment.
congratulations to the 19 year old for being so different.
He's gonna have some interesting cars in the future I'm predicting!
Fuck off
I’m 18 and have 3 😂
@@bradfoss996haha! Legend!
@@gflo2781 I sold the Sera not long after this video. I bought a 1991 Mercedes R129 SL and then sold that just last month, now I've got a 1987 Mercedes 190E 😂
Just from the look on the kids face makes me think you kidnapped him or held him hostage 😂
lol, I thought he was terrified as JM's the only other person he's let drive it
@@888johnmac 😂😂😂
I was thinking he's not used to being filmed, so he's likely a little self-conscious.
The Sera was actually the result of Toyotas market research into the sort of car young professional Japanese women (an emerging market in Japan during the late 80s/early 90s) wanted. It turns out they wanted something that was attention grabbing to look at it, especially when they parked somewhere, but with reliable mechanicals. That's why it looks crazy, with those doors but has relatively boring drivetrain.
lol, looks like they listened but used their own interpretation on it, and never showed the design to the young women to test. also, people can say they like things they won't actually then buy, depends how the questions are asked.
@King Brilliant is so very edgy
Part of the reason it was a sales flop was that it was expensive, and was released at almost the exact time that the Japanese economy stalled (known as the lost decade).
You've pulled out another bonkers car to review. Top marks. Although having the owner sitting next to you was a missed opportunity for a more conversational style of review.
High-five to that lad for having the balls to run that car and it’ll stand out from the crowd in a weirdly wonderful way..👌👌
Thanks mate means a lot 😊👍
Totally agree. Its great not to be run of the mill and go with the norm with cars I reckon. I think it's a terrific car good on the owner I say 👍👌
Thanks James was an awesome experience as you can probably see in my face at the beginning 😂 love my Sera even more after watching this
All the best, fellow young petrolhead!

Congratulations Morgan for daring to be different.✌️
@@brianiswrong thanks alot 😅👍
I've always loved and wanted the Sera. Just to drive it around the scenic parts of where I live (New Zealand's South Island) - especially in the rain. A gorgeous and interesting little car.
I’m planning on buying one next summer when I have enough money. But they are so funny and I love them. I want it because where I live everyone has Porsche’s and Tesla’s etc. while I just want a car that’ll grab attention lol
Too many comments on here seem to concentrate on finding imaginary "faults" and criticising what is actually a clever, efficient vehicle which fulfills all of its design criteria. The extensive glass area is coupled with an effective push-button heating/ventilation/air-con system which means it is a comfortable environment whatever the outside temperature. The side windows when dropped are surprisingly draught-free. It also has, as standard equipment, quick-mounting ( 2 seconds ) clip-in roof panels if the occupants want shade.
Wherever it is parked, the butterfly doors attract attention and admirers from kids AND grown-ups. Because of, or inspite of, the aerodynamic shape there is negligible wind noise and the only sound intrusion is road noise from the tyres.
The free-revving engine is red-lined at 7500 rpm and using 3rd gear ( in the 5-speed manual gearbox) for overtaking takes the car quickly and easily from 50 mph to 80+mph without stressing the car or its passengers. The gear change itself is swift and smooth. You would have to pay a LOT more for a vehicle with more performance.
The steering is light, accurate and effortless and a change from 14inch to 15 inch wheels with good (not cheap!) tyres gives excellent handling and more grip than Mr Average will ever explore.
In accomodation, it gives 4 seats where any other similarly-sized sporty car only offers two. The rear seats WILL take small adults. Behind the rear seats is a "boot" accessed by a hinged rear shelf, which will easily take the contents of a full, large-sized shopping trolley. Folding the rear seats and removing the parcel shelf gives the equivalent of a small pick-up which will carry a bicycle, or a 3-drawer filing cabinet or similar sized item.
The Sera is an eye-catching vehicle while giving more performance than is needed by all but lead-foot boy racers, while being versatile and economical.
In the 6 years I have owned mine it has averaged 42+mpg over mixed mileage including town and motorway. Maintenance cost have been negligible, with service items being readily available and inexpensive.
The icing on the cake is that it qualifies for Classic insurance ( cheap !) and is accepted in most Classic Car displays.
It is a versatile yet practical car and fulfills the dual roles of being attractive and attention-getting while being perfectly usable as an everyday car.
Thanks for the awesome comment 😂👍
Many thanks to that young man for letting us see a pretty cool and unusual car
You're welcome haha
At 8:53 you can see the small smirks of well-earned pride on the guy's face as JayEmm is complimenting him and his car
One of my favourite "normal" cars
It's known that Mclaren borrowed a Sera some time before the F1 was released. So, yes, they may have had the idea prior to the Sera and were only interested in checking out the engineering, but there's a defiite link.
The owners facial expression and line of sight never changes
He's gone to his happy place
😂 i was in deep thought
The owner came across as very enthusiastic and informative 😂
Did you tell him to remain silent and secretly have a gun pointed at him Jay?
😂 thanks haha
I dig it! Neat car! Good on ya’ kid, for driving something so interesting!
"This is a cool car..." after basically 9 minutes of gripes and sarcasm. Especially the sarcasm.
Does the owner have a UA-cam channel? If he's driving a Sera, and he's got an XR2 as a project, he could be huge in this sphere (and there's always room for more car channels)!
I currently dont have a UA-cam channel. It's something I've thought about doing but not sure how I'd pull it off 😂
Glanza owner here but in NZ. Looking forward to you reviewing one I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!
Lovely car. If only insurance was as easy here as it is in the UK. I have a glanza as my daily but in Ireland.
Do not get me started on the Irish insurance ripoff AlexB, I'm running an Integra Type R as a daily so you can imagine...
Imagine this with galanza turbo running gear
Only fitting an intercooler is a challenge, everything else is straight swaps as they share many mechanical design components with the Starlet, Which is nice.
this uses the 5E-FHE which has the stronger con-rods. Simply need the exhaust manifold, Turbo ECU and turbo MAP sensor. Some also recommend swapping the PAS pump with an EP92 turbo Starlet one for clearances. Front mount intercooler is easy enough, or an inline hot dog style would also work. If you do an engine swap with the top mount intercooler then the Turbo Starlet bonnet/hood needs to be fitted.
Yes I can, as I have one with 200+ horsepower!
My mate here in New Zealand has done it, but it's automatic.
@@shinjisan2015 The bonnets aren't compatible, what are you smoking?
A proper cool car
Superlive sound in a celica had ten speakers all over the cabin, an amp under the passenger seat and another tin box under the drivers (may have been a crossover thingamy) the whole complex arrangement seemed to be incorporated into the main wiring loom..... It sounded absolutely awesome ..... happy memories
Well done to the young fella. A great example of 1990s Japanese concept cars. Hope you have much fun with it. Enjoy
Thanks very much 😅👍
-Doors from this were the inspiration for the McLaren F1
-McLaren F1 used a BMW engine
-New Supra uses a BMW engine
"So yeah brah, once I swap the engine with a BMW unit I'll basically have a McLaren"
Lol! I'm not sure it works like that - six degrees of separation... 😂
Sold by Toyota, but built by BMW... mostly.. lol
using a BMW engine and commissioning BMW to build an engine to your exacting specifications are two subtlety but absolutely different things.
I don't have a Sera, but I do have a Paseo. I think Jay is the first reviewer I think has ever mentioned them existing.
There's not much I wouldn't do for a manual version. Very cool car!
Totally bonkers looking.
Plenty of room in the engine bay for modding or swapping, very easy to improve the handling (wider rims, coilovers), and the wrap around dash that moulds into the doors is like a little toy Honda Prelude!
Very interesting car the Sera, good to see one in the UK, in good condition. Never seen one Northern Ireland, yet, but I'm sure they're here somewhere...
Super cool, yet weird car. I like it.
Great review and a very different car 👍
I love this car.
It's a Japanese Delorean DMC-12. Looks fast, has the gullwing doors, but it's disappointingly slow.
The Delorean aint much faster 😂
Looks fast? this doesn't look fast.
@@1183newman It does but only when you hard park with those doors open all the way up. lol
@@morgannimmo6519 The DeLorean is probably slower.
@@1183newman It's a two door coupé with -gullwing- butterfly doors. It deserved a more powerful engine.
I haven't seen one of these in years. :) You're dead right, the world is a better place for them being in it.
I appreciate when manufacturer make cars like this. As if they just don't care, what people think. There are too many boring design out there. Japanese and French designers are brave enough often. This one is probably the best in terms of viewing angles and view clarity.
This is pretty epic.
I'd never even heard of the Sera !!
Great kid respect!
very nice looking overall !
Such a seedy view with Jay and his young boy with him 😂
In all seriousness though cool car not seen one for years
Here in west Japan temperatures during the summer months get up into the high thirties Celsius. That greenhouse of a car didn’t stand a chance.
Now that was awkward to watch. So impressed with the level of self control by the young fella though!👏🏻 showed way more class than the "reviewer"
Lovely Jubbly, that's done well living in Scotland so far, not sure if it will last so long if it has a proper Scottish winter.
My soul is prepared
@@morgannimmo6519 You should get the underside prepared sooner :-)
Che buona Sera!
Almost bought one of these when they were pretty new even in Japan (a Toyota dealer over here somehow had one)
You'd get less looks and questions if you were starkers on a horse whistling the national anthem out of your bum....
And probably still would today....
Someone somewhere also highly modified one but I never managed to find out much about it. And now I want a bloody sera again!
Is love to see you do a full review on the Toyota 2000GT.
I'm sure any car reviewer would love to review a 2000GT, they are incredibly rare and valuable (last yr one sold for $660k). There are only 3 in the UK.
I had one as my first car. I changed the engine to the 1.3 turbo gt starlet engine and manual gearbox. Quirky weird car which is a bit different.
Poor young chap got some appreciation at 8.58 then by 9.06 it was all taken away again. Windows do look like mclaren.
I was thinking of getting one of these for my son as his first car, but I’m worried about insurance in the US and how my son will cope with right hand drive
To be honest RHD is not an issue in this - the car is tiny and visibility is excellent
Wacky-logical enough to be a real Citroen - Love it!
Having owned one and used it for two years and lpg
it easily i swapped it for a Chevy limo and made a lot of money on
It
Great car
My friend used to have a glanza years ago around 250bhp. Was a bit of an animal
Holy shit! hats off to that Kid not wanting a German Whip!
Well i actually sold my Sera to buy a Mercedes SL R129 but im going to buy another Sera shortly 😆
Lol if ever there was a look for " fuck this.." then that kids got it.
I do like these just wish they made them faster
we have one same colour in vid, but we have a manual 5 speed gearbox
Cool in its own way.
Brilliantly weird. Kudos to the owner.
Thank you 👍
Hey Morgan, can we see the XR2?
It's currently a bare shell. It's going to be ready for next summer. MK2 Ford Diamond White with the red pin stripe and pepperpots.
Who knew that mannequin's had such esoteric car knowledge . Heck, who knew they could even drive!
Or that plurals don't need apostrophes......
Didn't the inspiration for the butterfly doors on the mclaren come from the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale?
No, go read read the top few comments. Someone mentions the book Gordon Murray wrote where he talked about the Sera.
I always wonder what Michael Cera drove in his youth, now I can rest easy knowing the answer. Thanks Morgan and James
Needs a 2ZZ and manual gearbox and would be awesome!
I'm 19 and I love classic cars and cars from 80s and 90s I just love the older cars and I'm very increased in old cars hence I watch old top gear and old motor week show, and some other shows and programmes. I hate new cars because they are full of crap and cheap quality made and just ugly looking cars. Old is gold.
Can you buy replacement door gas shocks?!
Yes you can. My gas struts were done fairly recently before i purchased it so must not be difficult to replace 😊
the ones you can see when you open the door, absolutely. The hidden counter struts inside the doors? not really.
If Only They Put Other Engine Than The 1.5L Maybe A 4A-GE? Or Atleast A 4A-FE? Anyway Nice Car And Video Mate!
To be fair the motor is only 10bhp down on a regular 4AGE. They go a lot better with a manual box, but it's rare and not the easiest conversion to do neatly.
I live in Cleveland, Ohio. Do you think this car can hold up well during the winter?
There was one version of sera that was made for snow areas in Japan.
They're just like any other small Japanese car in the winter. The problem is summer - never buy one without functioning aircon as they're practically a greenhouse on wheels.
How to pronounce Sera. It's the FRENCH word that was used by Toyota, exactly as the song goes, Que Sera Sera. They literally wanted the car to be called "Will Be". It is NOT the Italian pronunciation. en.wiktionary.org/wiki/sera
I'd only buy one because of the doors. Hard to come by and I believe auto trader doesn't list this model on the search
Yeah Autotrader hasn't recognised the existence of the Sera yet
Autotrader only lists models currently for sale - so if someone was selling a sera, it would be listed (If you try and create an ad and put this cars reg in, it comes up as Toyota and asks what model it is and lists way more than I've heard of). Interestingly though it is missing from the howmanyleft site, so its not on the DVLA database, although other grey imports (eg. WILL VI) are listed.
Toyota's Delorean!
Could be fun to convert one of those to a plug in hybrid drivetrain, probably from a Prius. Imagine driving this through town without any engine noise! Should turn some heads. Come to think of that, alien masks are mandatory :D
If that’s what you call fun
@@soplim8632 call it an overdose of Gary Andersons Thunderbirds in the late 60s. To be true, I'd expected electric cars in the mid 80s, nuclear powered or not 😊
A guy called Theo Gibson in New Zealand converted his to electric . It’s on UA-cam somewhere
imagine if toyota got drunk enough to hook this up with glanza bits
James Mike it’s been done, I owned a sera with Glanza conversion and it was immense, 250bhp was enough that’s for sure. The conversion is easy too
mondo odnom i suppose this isn't to your taste as well since its not a super miraculous new car?
It's as odd an an Estima in design, interesting times in Toyota design history.
It seems to me that Toyota tried to ape Honda's CRX without entirely understanding what made the CRX so popular.
Toyota Michael.
Hi i used to own that car I lived in potton Bedfordshire
Ahh that's cool haha as you can see I've made some changes 😂
It’s funny how Toyota can design and build mundane looking vehicles like the Auris and Prius to whacky leftfield cars like the CHR, Sera, mk1 Rav 4 and the Soarer to name a few..anymore oddball Toyotas please list below 👇🤣🤣
それを何と呼ぶべきでしょうか? 上記に? いいえ、それは取られます...どうですかSERA!
Theses are dumb cars to own but fun cars to drive. The view as you drive makes up for having to find rare parts whilst watching out for rust.
There you go McLaren
Any particular reason you did the entire monologue, and signed off without letting the lad speak. Might have been good to squeeze the history into the first half, and chat with the guy about ownership in the latter part. I bet he feels like a right pleb now.
He wasn't even supposed to be on camera but there was nowhere to put my usual camera thanks to the car's glass
They are quite cheap on eBay
the owner doesn't say much lol
The car does all the talking for me 😂
Should have left that kid somewhere....didnt he trust you with the car alone?
Unique but dam is it fugly !
When people reference the starlet and 1.5 in the same sentence. (facepalm)
Alright but it's the same family of engines no?
@@JayEmmOnCars the starlet from the same year has the 1.3 4efe and glanza has the 1.3 4efte.
Where only the paseo and sera has the 1.5 5efe
The starlet community make a 1.5 turbo combining but of both engines, but the 1.5 isnt the best as its not keen on revving until the 4e.
The owner looked bored 😐
Believe me i wasn't 😂
Nah, it's just weird knowing you might be on film - you don't know what to do with your face. I was lucky - I'm the Disastra owner from the previous video - all you see of me is the back of my bald head.
@@julianevans9548 haha very true and that really was a Disastra 😂
Julian Evans Would be nice t o get a back story to the car and to be asked about things as the review goes on
I guess kid wasn't aloud / can't speak? Weird video, if you don't want the owner to talk, don't put him in the video
There was nowhere to rig my normal camera, so I had to use an action cam to film this one
Why would you record your face ffs? Let us see interior not your face talking, Jesus Christ.....
