For a homeowner that will not be using it daily, it is clear that the Wen is a better choice at 1/3 the cost.
Wen now has a unit more like the Porter Cable motor is in the same place and is lighter Model is DW6394 for 140$

Hey my friend, being an all around tradesman/handyman for a few decades now, I got mad respect for your videos and information. You've def helped me taken my drywall gamet the next level. I FINALLY sanded the popcorn off the master ceiling yesterday, 20x20 room with the German brand FLEX, (the red flex, not the gray and. Black flex) much cleaner and easier than wet scraping it. Filled the dust collector and bag in my shop vac with over 60lbs of dust. I couldn't imagining doing it any other way. Thank you!

Your bucket on the trolly contraption is the real star of the video.
I being using the WEN for a year and whit time using it stop vibrating I think is something to do with the springs and the brush around the head now works perfect no vibration
I'm a Handymen and own the Wen sander. I bought it a few years ago and fell in love with it bc, I used to sand everything by hand and make a mess. Now I don't have to worry about that and I get a lot more work done, cleaner too.
I wanted a wall sander, but they cost way too much at the time. So, when I saw this, I was all over it.
It collects a good 97% of all the dust, connects to the shop vacuum, have it Hepa bagged, with the filter on it too.
It is a little heavy especially when doing popcorn ceilings, but it does a great job. It does bounce, but I lower the speed and that helps.
You should definitely have a drop in the corner of the room, turn it off first, then spin it over and let the dust in the machine head fall onto the drop. Vacuum the holes in the sander out once in a while too.
To clean it, I use my small Riobe blower.
That being said I will be getting the Porter Cable sander as well bc, after all these years, my shoulders are shot..

I have one similar to the WEN. Exact same sander, just different brand name. $200. I'm not a pro taper, I'm a General Contractor so I do maybe half dozen large mud jobs a year that I need a power sander for. It's fine for my needs. I wish it was a little lighter and better balanced like you mentioned but I use it for maybe 2 hours and then it sits in the garage for another couple months. I mainly bought it to remove popcorn ceilings and let me tell you, that $200 investment has paid back a few thousand dollars in a year. If and when it burns out, I'll probably move up to the Porter Cable or Mirca, or maybe cordless Makita since I am getting more requests for popcorn or textured ceiling removal and more mud work. I'm trying to decide if I want to only focus on mud and tape work moving forward since I do enjoy it quite a bit and there is so much work available for it. I am a Finish Carpenter by trade but the new area I moved to doesn't have a high demand for custom millwork.
I do the same things as you and I couldn't justify getting a $500.000+ one for the same reason. If I'm spending that kind of money it will be on something for wood or another DeWalt battery operated tool

I'm a journeyman carpenter who's been into the drywall for the past 5-6 years working with ym family doing renovations. During that process Ive learned to do all the mud work myself - but I HATE sanding, just finished a closet the other day came out looking like a fell in a bag of flour. The wen looks pretty good for the amount of sanding work I do myself! I might just pick one up! Thanks for reviewing it for us! Love the channel i've learned a hell of a lot from.

I just purchased the Wenn, the price is the biggest reason, having done private work at home or for friends I have always sanded by hand, I an certainly happy to try new ways, if it is something I can appreciate then I may sell the Wenn for an upgrade.

just got the porter cable last job. I will never sand drywall by hand again. got the dewalt small square sander 20vt. Man I am so thru sanding that stuff by hand lol. I started out in trim and cabinets, been learning drywall last few years. 30yrs in the trades.
I have a Bauer from Harbor FREIGHT it is like the Wen it was about $125 it does cut down on the dust. It goes very fast I am pleased with it. The walls and were it was Muded are very smooth you have to go over some spots you might miss I am new to this

i just ordered the WEN I have a few more of there tools for things i use every now and them most of my tools are Milwaukee, I'm in the field but prob drywall a dozen times a yr so an inexpensive tool fits my needs, trust me if I drywalled for a living I would get the festool I think its overpriced but its hands down the best and most portable
I have the WEN for my basement finish. For what I paid for it it is worth every penny even if I throw it away after my house is done. That being said if I had to use it to make a living I would definitely be looking at a higher end/lighter tool.
They don’t get much lighter and they all feel heavy after awhile
Replace the head of the sander on a porter cable with a Diablo soft pad and velcro pad and the swirling will almost non-existent
I like the wen, but it's just because I am more used to it and when doing the ceilings I put the the tab by the hose into my belt and just pull it toward my body against the ceiling and its saves my shoulders.
I do that too. Can use it alot longer that way.
I bought the Portal Cable used from a tool rental over 20 years ago, and even as a general contractor, its about the best tool purchase I ever made.
I'm using a power sander for the first time and it is a Wen. I do like it, because I'm not sanding by hand, but the location of the motor does make it heavy and hard to reach very far out.and it does start to shake sometimes. It is cheap though.

I bought an open box WEN from Amazon. I only paid $75 for it. I built 3 rooms in my back of the house and hung 20 sheets of drywall. By no means am I a pro but I do everything in my house. The WEN worked great for me. It was mostly one and done use for me. It definitely cut the sanding time immensely versus doing it by hand. I’ll probably be selling it for around $60 since I’ll probably never use it again.
I own a couple of power tools made by wen and they function just fine.
So do I. But the drywall sander was garbage to the point I returned it. Like the negative reviews state, the pad that came with mine was not remotely flat. Bounced off the wall. Absolutely unusable. Did nothing but cause damage.
I wish I had known about these before. I just scraped a popcorn ceiling, and it was not fun. That would have made it much easier and faster. I'll definitely be getting a sander for the rest of the house ceiling, as well as it's intended purpose.
I just scraped my entire house and am in the process of skim coating. I just bought the wen power sander to sand and I can assure you it's easier to just scrape the ceiling. Power sanders are heavy, your arms will feel like jello in no time...not that scraping is easy on the arms/shoulders either.
Lots of popcorn ceilings contain asbestos, in which case you cannot use a sander. You have to dampen and scrape them.
@@hammockmonk you could still probably sand an asbestos one but you chance getting the particles in the vents. It would just take extra precautions of covering all vents, doing extensive cleaning afterward, and wearingnproper PPE. I just finished scraping every room in my house, skim coating, and have it primed for painting in the next couple days...I honestly believe that scraping is much easier than sanding. I had a 10" trowel but it would peel sheetrock paper off so I did every room in my entire house with a 4" taping knife and I still believe it was a million times easier than attempting to sand it off. I bought a long orbital power sander and it sucked just sanding down the layers of skim coat, let alone doing it on popcorn. Even if it's safe to sand popcorn I'd advise anyone to just scrape it. I got a milwaukee electric sprayer which made it super easy to dampen the ceiling for scraping.

Double filtered vacuum aspirated or not, you should always wear a respirator.
I've used many sanders over the years, Porta cable, Festool, Wallboard, Giraffe, etc, I can easily say the Festool is by far my preferred direct drive sander and the Giraffe for cable driven .
IMO the Festool dust extractors are simply unmatched. I highly recommend them even if you don't have the matching sander, much quieter and is powerful enough to pull the Festool sander head against ceilings and walls, reducing the weight and making it feel almost like pole sanding, but it is a weird feeling when it fights you trying to remove it from the surface, haha.
Only bad thing to say about it is the lining bags, definitely grab a reusable one as the genuine disposable ones aren't cheap.

Ya but the vacuum needs to have a drywall rated filter. Adding the dust deputy helps a lot.
Bought a wen been using it since 2016 , got it hooked up to ridged 25 gall vac I’ll replace the filter about every 100 sq feet I have 8 reusable filters - the Wen jumps around a lot seems to clog and does not work good keeping the dust down that’s why a watched this video

In at least 20 years of working like this, I’ve never hurt my feet. Shoes give you a false sense of security, and I’ve learned to just simply pay attention to my surroundings instead of relying on my shoes to protect me. Plus I work in private homes and not on OSHA mandated job sites where they have to protect idiots from themselves. Not implying anything but that’s mostly what osha does. lol 😂
I can understand the pain in your feet...Hence barefoot. When some of these young bucks get older they will understand. I am going with the WEN and the 100 pack of discs on Amazon for 33 bucks. I do drywall often enough that it will save me time and pain.
I purchased the wen and didn’t even get to use it because the hose didn’t fit to my shop vac and the belt clip snapped off! I returned it.
Just repaired my garage, major termite damage, and have to replace a lot of Sheetrock. Have a lot of sanding to do.
I have purchased the wen for my project. Have yet to use it. I figured ( like you mentioned) about the balance with motor placement. Just working on my barndominuim build. After I am done it will be on market place. I understand the value of spending the money on quality tools for a professional. If I was to do this for a living I would definitely purchase the other models you mentioned. Thanks for you insight. Question I have, what did you use for the hose Adaptor from the wen hose p to your vacuum?
I don't think I needed one. For adapters around the shop, on my saws and such, I adapt PVC to work.
I am a painting contractor. I do minor drywall repair and painting in occupied homes. Some repairs are stress cracks on walls with vaulted ceilings. And like you mentioned if I sand by hand the dust will travel. Or I will have to seal off the area with plastic. Question: Would the Wen Sander you sell allow me to sand the wall repairs without creating a big mess. And what grit of sandpaper would I use to finish for primer and paint.

Well I always tell my customers my Drywall sander will trap about 95% of the dust. But sometimes a little bit shoots off the side and sometimes you have to sand some of it by hand. I sand with 80 grit for coarse sanding and 150 grit for final sanding and 220 for Level 5

I don't know sanders, but I did buy the WEN 7 1/4" corded Track Saw for $140 with their 100" track/2-55s for $66. All things considered, the 7 1/4" was cheaper because it has a better blade, better features, slightly better capacity, and the 7 1/4" blades have a larger variety, the blades all things consider are higher quality, and the blades are cheaper than the 6 1/2" blade, which is actually metric. It did very precision work for me sheeting the inside of a garage with OSB and cabinet sides. It beats the stars out of a table saw for sheet goods. Sure, I could buy a Makita cordless for 3.5 times the price or the Festool cordless for 6 times the price, and they might be slightly handier but it sits most of the time. I didn't even need to buy a blade because the quality of the blade was very good, perfect cuts and no splinters in OSB or plywood.
Good review and comparison. If I were a pro with need for regular daily use, I would go with the P-C or other brand with the motor situated away from the sanding head. The fatigue factor would matter a lot more. I happen to have used both types. I rented a P-C for a day and realized I could use such a tool extensively over the course of my project(s) so I investigated buying which would enable me to use it at my convenience. I found a lot of positive reviews about the Wen so I bought it, based largely on price - it has more than paid for itself. No question I would rather use a tool with the motor situated lower and with better balance, but I have used the Wen for several weeks now and find it to be a good quality, highly serviceable machine. It seems to be very well engineered and made.
As an amateur, I have to do a lot more sanding than a professional does and, for me, it is a thousand times better than hand sanding with a pole, and no dust. (I also use a Hyde handheld vacuum sander, it's yellow plastic, for tight spots, corners etc. and it captures 98 percent of the dust as well, and can use it for other sanding, like lead paint). If I get tired from sanding a ceiling, I take a break for a few seconds and then get back at it. Walls are a piece of cake.
As pointed out, these catch about 98 percent of the dust. I use a regular shop vac with a HEPA filter but I add a vac filter bag as well when sanding drywall, which results in zero clogging of the pleated HEPA filter - all the drywall dust drops to the bottom of the filter bag so I constantly have good vac suction. In my case, I can use the filter bag for several days to a week before my vac gets heavy enough - lol - and I have to change it.
Note - I do not have any problems with the on-off switch on my Wen unit, it flips on and off easily. The switch could probably be better located but I'm used to it being where it is so it is not much of a problem. I also don't have any undue vibration in the sanding head.

Wen actually makes one with the motor further back from the head. It is also 6.3 amps vs the 5 amps that the cheaper model. They also have one with an interchangeable head, where you have a round one and a triangle for inside corners.
Can you explain a little bit more on the filters. I have a good shop vac I wanna use
We have the festool planex, and the wen, the wen is lighter, sands well, we use 180 grit, no swirls at all. No sander is dustless, we light check everything with sponge sander, nor can these things get into tough areas, or angles. I like them both, the difference is, festool is like driving a Cadillac, wen is like driving a sunbird. And I can buy 15 wens for the price of one festool.
Wen is garbage.You don't have a Festool if you think Wen is even plausible. Stick to pouring concrete or being a Walmart greeter.

I have the Wen and love it. If I was a pro, I'd hate it. It works great, but the motor weight at the end is a shoulder killer on longer jobs. You didn't show the shoulder support strap on the Wen - that helps a little. So I'm a DIYer and finished 2 ceilings and some large patchwork on another wall. When my arms got tired, I just took a break for a few minutes. For small jobs where you're not sanding for hours and hours, the price can't be beat. And sanding a ceiling or wall without having to wear a mask and getting dust everywhere is worth the price alone!

what about a commercial remodeler is the wen worth being a first buy on the drywall sander or truely save for the porter meanwhile getting hourly

Hey what type of vacuum system do you have I have had my Porter-Cable sander about 10 years I don't like how big around it is hard to grip for so I mostly sand with pole sander.

I'm a small job remodeling contractor, started out building new stilt homes with my dad. Always watched the different trades, including the drywall guys, never saw a power sander in 15 years.
Now I do all my own drywall on my own jobs and always done it manually. Am doing a house now with 10 ft ceilings. I don't use stilts so I just bought a power sander but they don't look like they stretch very high, did I waste my money? Supposed to come tomorrow but after watching your video, not sure I'm going to be happy with it.

The sanders i own and use are the Festool Planex , Flex ge-5 and ge-5r , Eibenstock and Porta cable. The Festool ( for me ) is used specifically for texture removal. I don't care for it on finished sheetrock. I prefer the Flex line of sanders for finished product. I also tried two of the chinese knock off's...sent one model back immediately and thew the other (Aleko) in the trash the same day I tried it.
As far as the vacs/dust extractors go. I have the Festool ct36ac, Metabo Asr-35 and Flex vce-33 all are good but I like the metabo the best.

But, for the professional production worker? No!!...The materials, technology and tolerances just aren't there. But....there is no sense spending a large amount of $$$ on something thats just going to sit there being unused.

Great video. Do you think the Wen would rough sand wood OK? I'm making a large wood (live edge) table, and was hoping to get a more even finish with the larger 9" disk. I would use my random orbit for the finer grit finish sanding.
The problem with these is they sand in a circular motion which leaves more scratches than a random orbit or even a belt sander going with the grain.

I own both festool and wen. I use festool for popcorn removal and wen for my smooth finishing. Festool has a slanted disc thats good for collecting popcorn chunks but it will leave uneven grooves if your trying to sand smooth joints

They get the job done but. Try a festool sander the plan x the price is high but its been going strong for 6 years not one thing wrong with it. Best tool you will ever invest in
I am mostly retired from Drywall right now although I do some occasional jobs. UA-cam is now my full-time business otherwise I would definitely look into buying the Festool

Hey Guy, WEN has a new model out Model# 6394. they have moved the motor to the middle of the shaft like the porter cable. Do you think that one would be worth it over the older version? its $140 at the home depot

Good review sir. Just curious how much do the sand paper disks cost per unit. Personally if I was in the trades I would go for the Porter Cable model as you use it every day. For me as a novice who does the odd small drywall repair on my house once in a blue moon I would probably not buy either model. What would suit my needs more is a small hand held sander that you can connect your shop vac to. Cheers

I use the porter cable. My dislikes is the motor link cable comes off the sanding head on mine and the vacuum hose from the shaft to sanding head falls off all the time. Never tried the wen

Appreciate your demo am currently looking for a power sander as I’m a OG pro have always used the idiot stick I have rented the porter cable unit same one you demonstrated for knocking down heavy stucco walls so I was able to skim out. Used 60 grit and was I quite happy with the results the dust would of been crazy. I think I will pass on the Wen and go pro thanks again. What are your thoughts on knocking down popcorn I can purchase 40 grit should blast off painted popcorn really don’t want to go the wet route too messy what’s ever left I can skim out with my Columbia Tomahawk skim blade have you just sanded versus wet removal?
If it's only been lightly painted, only primed or not at all, you can certainly sand it off. My issue is it comes off so fast my vacuum can't keep up, even with a dust deputy on it. I think it 's mostly because of the smaller hose, but a Festool dust extractor 'might' keep up. So you end up with a lot of dust and debris everywhere. Last job I sanded, I had to hire someone to spend 6 hours cleaning dust out of the heat registers, dusting the walls, tops of trim, etc. It was freaking everywhere, even though I trapped about 95% of it. So now I'll only sand if I can mask off the walls and floors completely, and glue those together. It's a pretty good workout though, which is an advantage to wet scraping. You should need to skim after sanding, but it's always hard to say. Good luck and thanks for the question.

Apples and oranges. On paper the Wen wins hands down, bit from a professional perspective, the the Porter cable was your choice and it makes sense. As a home owner with only a my home and maybe a garage to do, I will pocket the money and go with the Wen for the win. (See what I did there? lol)

I’ve just done my first skim coat of mud on a popcorn ceiling removal. Would you recommend this type of sander between coats if I’m looking for a smooth, flat ceiling with no texture? Thanks
Yes, absolutely, but only for everything but the final sanding. For a true smooth finish with no texture, you will see the swirl marks with these, even with 200 grit, so I always finish off with manual sanding to avoid that. Or, roll on a heavy enough stipple to hide the scratches, or use a high build primer etc.

I think this "cordless" rage is overdone. "Cordless," i.e., requiring a battery, adds major cost in the long run and weight in the tool. In the case of a drywall sander, what is the point of "cordless" when you have a vacuum hose to contend with anyway, hooked up to a corded vac. Battery tools have their place in my tool inventory - well, only drills and drivers - but I'll never understand cordless miter saws, circular saws, and a lot of others.
Actually, the cordless saws have more power than the corded ones. I love them for the speed and convenience

I watched the drywall finishers doing my basement. All had PC. I asked them what they thought about my pole sander? PC does the work for you in an hour's work. The pole sander will take 3 hours but you'll have noodles for arms after 1 hour. Saves energy, time and much less mess ...
Hmm, I find it a little easier to sand with the PC, but it's heavier, so that makes your arms tired quicker, so there's a tradeoff. And I can absolutely do a better job sanding with the pole sander, but then there is WAY more dust, and that is why I bought this, for the dust reduction.
It's like sanding wood with paper and hand or using palm sander using strength just to guide is easier than guidance plus pressure and back and forth. I use a Trend air mask. The drywall guys used goggles with a breather dual filters. Either way the dust gets in all cracks.

When sanding with a palm sander, gravity holds the piece to the work piece, but when sanding ceilings, you have to push with decent force or it starts shooting out dust. So that's one reason I say there's a labor tradeoff. And here's my issue with any of these power sanders, they sand in circles. And that always leaves swirl marks in the drywall, which can show through. If it sanded in a random orbital fashion it wouldn't. I can sand manually and not get those. You'd have to see it to see what I'm talking about, but anyway, I love it for the speed and near dust free sanding. I'd say it cuts about 98% of the dust down, and that's huge. Well worth my investment.

I assume you’re a man of integrity, and have no reason to believe otherwise. I mean no disrespect. Also, Festool makes amazing tools; some of my favorites, and I’m a huge tool snob. But if I was at Festool and heard those statements, that is exactly how I would interpret them, especially given how many shill reviewers there are on UA-cam these days.
Can you add some weight to the handle end of the WEN to give it better balance?
They have versions where the motor is lower. I wouldn’t want more weight added
Often a high price is not indicative of high quality. Porter Cable does not support its tools and equipment so you are paying the high price but in a short while you won't be able to get replacement parts as I found out. My PC air compressor was less than eight years old when the motor quit. Found out which part it was and figured it would be easy to bring it back on line. The part was an inertial starting plate that was probably less than ten dollars. Only it was no longer made or obtainable. GE had done a custom run for PC on the motor and did not keep parts for it. Porter Cable stocked almost nothing and that was one. Pretty much everything on an eight year old tool was listed as "obsolete". I ended up searching all the parts houses to no avail, scrapping the $600 compressor for an easily fixable problem had they kept the most basic stock. A company that does not stand behind its tools is not worth dealing with unless the price is commensurate. Many have bought the rights to the name and try to leverage that to high prices without the quality or customer care the old brand had. Keep in mind that Porter Cable of yours is from the previous era not a current tool.

Festool is king. That sander works so well. Idc if your sanding for 10 mins or 10 hours there is literally not a speck of dust that’s not caught by the vacuum. But that festool price tag is no laughing matter…..
