Wetting the stone can help to improve visibility of old carvings. Or you can use crayon/chalk on paper as for brass rubbings.

Down near where I used to live on bodmin moor there’s a huge slab of stone covered in cup and circles. We were told it was a star map, though not of any constellations I recognized.

That's interesting. It's a different thing altogether but Thornborough Henges in North Yorkshire is believed to be a mirror of Orion's Belt. I'm hoping to visit there next year.

That's the theory I'd heard about some in Scotland. Recognising/overlaying the cups with traced maps match them to ancient constellation names. It's the precision of placement that gives weight to the theory.

The marks on the badger rock almost look hexagonal. Very interesting. What a beautiful place

It's a shame it was so grey that day, I've seen some photos of it in the sun and all the details really stand out.

Legally required “good to see you remembered your hat when going up ilkley moor!” 😀 ilkley moor is such a spectacular location, and that old quarry is famous several times over - one of the UK’s most distinctive filming locations!

More information would make the long form have a point.
What are the main theories ?
What is the geographical spread/frequency ? (map) Which culture produced them ?
You aluded to these things, without filling in the blanks.
There must be some research/,theorising you could have expanded upon, even if the actual purpose is still a mystery

I'll take that onboard thank you and try to include more information next time.

Ive always been under the impression they are neolithic markers to help navigate across the moors.
    Different markers mean different things.
Maybe the more intense or numerous the pictograph, the more dangerous it was.

That sounds possible! They do often seem to be in more remote areas so some kind of warning or navigation sign could make sense. Some other suggestions from archeologists include a connection to burial locations, or somehow related to the the timings of sunrise and sunset.

Is it possible that the engravings are a marriage ceremony, or man and woman dedicating themselves to each other.

I guess it's possible, one book written on the subject listed 104 theories!

Just found your channel by Facebook somehow and even though I'm from the U.S. east coast this video reminds me of a massive rock covered in lican moss near my house however it's Also got old rune viking like writing on it which is fascinating as the writing is obviously older than the moss which grows over it

So you show us "cup & ring" then show us a bunch of people putting their mark on rocks and it doesn't occur to you that it's the same thing? Ephemeral people making their mark on eternal stone.

    • @northernintrovert
      @northernintrovert  2 дні тому +3

It's possible. After looking at other examples around the world and reading the research it seems most archaeologists think there's more to them than that. The Cochno Stone in Auchnacraig and Achnabreck in Kilmartin Glen are great examples if you're interested in seeing more.

@@northernintrovert All man made symbols are for communicating ideas, but you need to know what those symbols mean to understand the message. For us "John Smith 2024" has meaning, but for someone who knows nothing of letters and numbers it would be mystery.
