Thanks for the video! I've always been able to remove the trim ring by grabbing it and turning it counterclockwise to unscrew it, per Schlage installation instruction manual, but maybe there are different types. Also, there is a special plastic castle nut wrench tool that comes with a new Schlage commercial handle set for removing and installing the castle nut bushing. You can purchase the tool separately. Part number 40-017. I think someone also makes a steel one, which is nice if you are working on a lot of door handles like in an office building. Always start the castle nut by hand to avoid cross threading it. It should go on and come off with little effort. You can use a small Allen key to insert in the hole to remove the handles.
Thank you for showing me this procedure. I picked up a nice solid-core door out of a Dumpster to use as the top of a very sturdy workbench I'm building. The door weighs 100 lbs. including the hardware, and after lugging it all the home I was dismayed by the apparent lack of screws for removing the lockset! I was seriously considering using a hack saw or a hammer.... Now, thanks to you, I have successfully taken it apart without causing any damage.
Can't thank you enough for this. I had to really pound on the ring to get it to turn. Eventually I worked it off. Thanks again for putting this together to show how it's done.
I really liked your video. The way you showed it step by step and explained it as you went along. So many how to video's just go through the steps without explanation. Yours was really nice.
Just so everyone is aware - This also works for the ones that have a key-hole on one side, and a twist lock on the other. Also, thanks for the video my dude. Absolutely no other video on UA-cam shows this exact model with the tension/spring plate on the frame beneath the faceplate and I couldn't figure out how to get past it. Didn't realize that ring was screwed on. Appreciate it man!
The compressing tool yo take the handle out for the first step, I have a little pin that fits into the hole but not pressing anything and I am having a hard time to take the older door out. Any suggestion? Where can i get the tool that you are using here?
According to Schlage, you should turn the trim plate about 30 degrees counter clockwise to remove it (It'll ratchet as you turn it). The groove that the bump goes into is below the middle at 4:26.
File this under "You learn something new everyday." I had a loose handle on a Schlage interior door with no visible screws. I fiddled for 20 minutes before I looked it up. Thanks !
My spring plate isn't compressing on one side. On the other side, it seems to be completely compressed already and there is nothing to press. I can't get either handle off. Thoughts?
WD-40 or whatever liquid oily stuff or oil to make things easier to move. Optionally, hammering: vibration may clear or loosen up gunk seizing parts together. Just don't deform anything critical, so 5 taps is about max.
How would you remove an unlocked lever handle (so, we are missing the key but the door is unlocked, attempting to remove to take to a locksmith). We have removed the interior handle, the part that you insert into the side of the door, and have gotten as far as removing the face plate on the exterior handle (the side with the lock), but can’t actually get the rest of the outer mechanism apart. Any help would be appreciated!
They are threaded components of a different model, so try a bunch of tools and approaches and you let us know what worked for you. Shoot a video and post a link, especially if it was difficult. (Helps others)
Very helpful, thank you. Could you please place links or give more info on the hand tools that you've used, namely that special "punch" and that chisel/blade?
Tricky, that is. Outside handle (lock cylinder in it) removes with the pin depressed ONLY when the key is in the lock and turned 45 degrees, then the spindle inside can be turned with a slot screwdriver.
Kitchen knives made of foundry sludge metal are likely to not work, a decent hand screwdriver, and thin steel nail will do. I sometimes use a pebble as hammer. A stiff piece of sheet metal piece with a thin enough edge can do.
The handle I want to remove has two small shallow holes, and when I try pressing into them with a pick I can’t make anything happen. Anyone know what I need to do to get this lever off?
Try different diameter pins/nail that fit the hole, go in straight, handle might be stuck on a bit, needing a bit of prying off along its edge evenly all around.
I'm having a similar issue except mine seems to have an Allen key type hole with no actual hole inside to press? When I put an Allen key in they just spin around and around doesn't loosen or give way or anything? It doesn't look like any of the videos or info I've looked at online, just my luck
More force at the dimple - a crater is made along the rim which needs to clear a raised rim. It`s a snap fit, such as between a coffee lid and cup. Keep at it. Breaking this snap force bond can be a (insert choice adjectives here).
Just FYI...that "small" screw gun is an impact driver. These are meant to drive anchors into resistant substrates. Such as concrete anchors and self tapping screws into structural and cold formed non-structural steel framing. They do so with a mechanical hammer continuously striking a geared drive as opposed to the constant, and measurable, force applied by typical cordless drills where the torque can be set and managed. I have seen HUNDREDS of hinge screws, panic device mounting screws, and countless other hardware mounting screws stripped, sheared, or otherwise ruined by these. Don't get me wrong, they are great tools for construction, but they should NEVER be used when installing any door hardware short of using self tapping screws to mount door closers and/or mechanical door stops onto steel frames, but never on doors of any sort, or wooden frames. Always use a normal cordless drill that allows you to control the torque applied to the fastener.

Preach on brotha. Let's not forget also that the schlage rose twists on. The detent follows a path. No need for a hammer on a lock installation. Try finding the crown nut removal tool for that difficult nut. A hand plane iron...... seriously?
ERMAHGAWDSAFETYSALLY!!!!! He's running in a screw. Not rocket surgery or brain science. I'm just looking for a general idea how to change one of these stupid door handle sets without exposed screws. Thanks Mr. Overengineer (from another engineer who hadn't changed one of these specific locksets yet)
Michael Davis useless comment. Just used an even bigger impact driver and it worked just fine. Thanks for the over extended paragraph of wasted uselessness though
Eh, it's on enough. It's only cross threaded. I'm hoping you removed the actual latch. A passage function latch lacks a security feature that the entry/office function provides.
Cheers, absolutely. I only end up doing this once in 5 years, often have to get by with a toothpick and a coin or whatever is at hand. Thanks for watching.
Very poor video quality, left latch in! No instruction for latch mechanism adjustment! I'd give this video 3 stars at best, much better videos available with better instructions and video!
Why would a video titled "LOCKSET removal" have anything about a latch? I'll call you later to discuss in person, but I expect your Mama to answer the phone. If not, I'll give you a zero rating on call handling. Much better reasoning is available and better excuses.
6 years later and this was the best video I found that helped.

Exactly
I got stuck on this lock at work today, and your video helped me because I never knew about the locking nut. Thank you so much!
Glad I could help!

Just did the exact same thing!

Unscrewing that bezel baffled me. Thanks for posting! You saved my ass on this job....
Cheers, mate!

You nailed it... thank you so much.... beats the locksmith charge for a site visit..... excellent instruction and step by step procedure!!
Finally a good video of the lock ring! Thank you!
You are a God. Thank you SOOOOO much. I couldnt find anything on Google. Thank you
Most of the Schlage door latch removal videos are not this model. Took me a while to find you. Thanks.
Glad I could help

Thank you for posting this instructional video! We've been struggling to remove a similar knob and your video helped us get it done!
thanks so much! I was completely lost with this task before this video!
For people doing this at home with little to no tools, the tip of a wine opener works well to remove the handles 🍷cheers
According to Schlage, you should turn the trim plate about 30 degrees counter clockwise to remove it (It'll ratchet as you turn it).

Thanks for the intel!
Yea you just need your hand, definitely dont need to pry 👍
Thank you! This made my task much easier and quicker!
Great video, thanks. Couldn’t work out how to remove the handle. Didn’t realise there was a spring behind it
I've tried using picks, files, anything small enough to release the spring; but I just can't seem to take the dang lever off. Any ideas?
Thank you very much, this video saves me a lot of money.
Great to hear!
thank you for your video! i couldn't figure out why the lock wasn't budging. it was the lock ring!
Commendable camera work 👍

Great video. Thanks for posting it.
Thanks for posting this video we did not know how to remove it now we do!
Good quality parts, commercial grade doors. Thank You for your How To.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks Mr. Overengineer (from another engineer who hadn't changed one of these specific locksets yet)
Thanks for watching!
Thanks I felt really dumb at work than actually had to get somebody else to help me and that is the degrading sometimes
Any clever ideas for removing the levers without the tool? Can't find anything small enough that is strong enough to compress the spring.
I often use a thin allen key
Thank you for the video. You save my day.
No worries, mate
THANK YOU!!! Before the Lock Ring, I was lost!
Lock ring!!! Lol
Hello, is it possible to adjust how far you have to turn the handle for it to engage fully and open the door? Thanks!
Not possible commercial.schlage.com/content/dam/allegion-us-2/web-documents-2/Manual/Schlage_A_Series_Service_Manual_106720.pdf

@@theoverengineer Turns out that I have a Kwikset latch, which requires an Allen wrench to remove the handles! LOL
Very Very nice
Thank you 😊
You solved my problem
Thank you
Glad to hear that!
if the key has broken off in the door will the handle still come off?
Thank you!! This was a lifesaver. I was on the struggle bus!
What is the name of that tool you used to remove the door handle levers?
(I don`t have a name for it)
Do not pry off the trim plate! It is designed to twist off like a jar cap.
Thankyou so much!!! Mine didn't have a ring lock to unscrew apart thankfully!
You're welcome!!
do you happen to know the model no. of the lock? we need to buy the same one for consistence with other doors.

Punch is from a Schlage? installatin kit, blade is from retailer Lee Valley tools.
Thank you so much, Awesome instructional video
Thank.s for this. It's so easy when you know how..
Where do you get that tool?
Used to come in the box with the lock
Hi, what to do when the door is locked from inside and we are not to see the screws from outside?
Tricky, that is. Outside handle (lock cylinder in it) removes with the pin depressed ONLY when the key is in the lock and turned 45 degrees, then the spindle inside can be turned with a slot screwdriver.
hey can i use something else to get the handle off ? i dont have that special tool your using to pull it out.
Nail and pliers? Try something ...
hey don't have any of these tools... what other household objects can we use to accomplish this task?
Kitchen knives made of foundry sludge metal are likely to not work, a decent hand screwdriver, and thin steel nail will do. I sometimes use a pebble as hammer. A stiff piece of sheet metal piece with a thin enough edge can do.
Is it possible to remove the whole thing without removing the spanner ring? I cant get mine off for some reason
Not without permanent damage
You need the lock ring removal tool.
Should have been a plastic one that came with the new lock set. Would have made life a lot easier.
Was never in the box when I got it, so just made it work. Of course there is a proper tool for everything.
The handle does not want to come off. Im using the special tool to push in the button but nothing
It tends to seize up, dry out, bind somewhere ...
What tool was that you used ??
I have no name for it.
What model number schalgue is that
The handle I want to remove has two small shallow holes, and when I try pressing into them with a pick I can’t make anything happen. Anyone know what I need to do to get this lever off?

@@RangerElite18 same here!! Help!
Im looking for the video to change out just the lock thanks anyway.
Thanks for posting... very helpful
Well done! Saved me a headache!
Very helpful. Thanks!
What do you do if it's locked? I had a key break off in the lock and I can't get it out.
Easy: remove hinge pin or cut off hinges, then replace. No need to damage the door.
Thanks for a great video! It helped immensely!
Man, I cannot pry off that stupid trim piece shown at 3:50. It's loose, but won't come off. (Insert very bad language here). WTF??
More force at the dimple - a crater is made along the rim which needs to clear a raised rim. It`s a snap fit, such as between a coffee lid and cup. Keep at it. Breaking this snap force bond can be a (insert choice adjectives here).
What is that tool just before the hammer
Schlage list it as "lockset tool"
where can I get it?
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏.thanks...you just got a new subscriber....

Thanks for this
