Back in the early 80’s I was a college student. My date took me out to a really nice restaurant (the kind where they don’t have prices on the menu). It was over $200 a plate (probably why).
Anyways, he got a bottle of Merlot to go with the meal. It was $300. I remember the wine steward telling us that it had notes of oak. I’m a college student, barely old enough to drink, what do I know about wine, right?
It was so dry it just sucked the moisture out of my mouth, then bitter, then the taste of oak was so strong that I would have been easily convinced that they put chunks of the barrel in there. To me, it was awful.
Today I’m older, wiser, and prefer Barefoot Bubbly if I have a choice 😆
Edit to add a price comparison (for the younger crowd): McDonald’s regular hamburgers were 4/$1.00 and after 8 pm the price dropped to 10/$1.00. McDonald’s was very popular for late night study groups.

That Guy: First of all, you over-paid for that bottle...$20-25 tops. Also, that wine should be consumed the year it was vinted. You don't age Nouveau!

It’s scientifically proven that saying something with a French accent makes it sound fancy….for example
    Olive Garden……
    Olive Garden(French accent)
    See totally works

I can only imagine how much fun you had making this. The whole thing is hilariously cringe send yet spot on. From someone who used to work at a prestigious winery, you nailed it.

a.) If that bottle of Beaujolais cost you 30 bucks, you are doing something wrong. 🤣
b.) Sad to say I know people like the ones you're poking fun of. Box wine and the more accessible wines are "hick" wines to them, no good wine comes from any place that isn't California or France and they try to convince the rest of us that they can taste all the subtle notes that composed the wine (none of us are fooled).
c.) The bit at the end about the fireplace had me rolling. Funny as always!

      b) spot on. Just let them know that the average price of a bottle of wine sold in Europe is a lot cheaper than in USA. Here in Spain you can get amazing wine from a 2 Euro bottle.

A dirty secret of the wine world: most wine snobs and sommeliers can't pick the $1000 wine from $25 wines in a blind taste test.
Same thing with music. Symphony musicians can't reliably tell a $3,000,000 Stradivarius from a $5,000 violin in a blind test.

I actually would disagree I believe trained sommeliers can taste the difference between a cheap and expensive wine, and a trained musician can tell between a cheap and expensive instrument. Certainly as a musician you learn quickly how to tell cheap vs expensive guitars, pianos, basses and other instruments. Sometimes it's hard because the cheap/expensive instrument are tested using the same melody line when expensive instruments are most useful in certain contexts
