A great tip I got from a spinner friend: if your fibre is compacted, steam it. If you don’t have an old fashioned water kettle (stovetop), get yourself one. Boil some water in it, and hold your fibre to the spout as steam comes out of it. Watch the fibre bloom and puff up. It’s like magic. Doesn’t matter if it’s combed top or carded. I’m a beginner spinner and my Christmas stocking held some Malabrigo Nube which is notorious for being compacted and hard to draft. Steaming it made it more than double in volume and easy to draft. Can’t wait to turn it into a project (already chose three patterns depending on the yardage I’ll get) but I’m forcing myself to finish what I’m working on now. The sample I’ve spun is duly labeled and has joined it into the bag along with a few bay leaves and lavender to keep moths at bay.

I am excited, and really looking forward to catching up and following your fiber journey!
