I remember watching this on my friends family's little black & white portable TV. Even after all these years I can still remember when this goal went in - the most dramatic end to a season I have ever seen. Sadly, that was the last memory I have of my mate, as he went off to university weeks later and he stayed on in that area after graduating.
The city last minute goal was intense but not near this intensity! the two contenders fighting each other liverpool chance to win a double! and Arsenal first league win in 18 years
IVIyWorld I dunno, they're pretty close. City hadn't won a title in 44 years, and were about to be edged by their hated rivals YET again. There was more on the line in 2012. But in this game it was the two actual contenders playing against each other in the final match. So swings and roundabouts.
TitanFind You say there was more on the line in 2012 - I disagree. Arsenal hadn't won the title in 18 years and had been in charge of the first division for the first half of the season, Liverpool were flying and had given everything for their fans after the horror of Hillsborough. When Liverpool stuffed West Ham 5-1 to make Arsenal need the 2 goals, they hadn't been beaten by two clear goals all season. If Barnes had just run to the corner flag in the 91st minute the result was different. Listen to the comments from Pleat - he didn't even consider the 2nd goal a possibility at this point. Two titans battling head to head with the underdog coming through with seconds to go. The single greatest night of my life :)
Clive Newman Man City hadn't won the title in 44 years and had been in charge of the Premiership for most of the season before losing the lead but THEN hauling it back to be in pole position. It was City's title to lose on the final day, and the pressure was immense. Just look at the frustration on the faces of the fans as they're losing at the 90 minute mark. Man Utd are going to rub this in their faces - all they have to do is win a single home game against QPR, and they fuck it up! - and it will take them a generation to recover from the feeling of bereft humiliation. I am confident that the ecstasy of the City fans in 2012 eclipses even that of the Arsenal fans in 1989.
That is up there as one of the strangest comments ever. Small matter of 97 football fans killed the previous month? Liverpool were not even going to finish the season. Players were considering retirement.
Sorry mate but Arsenal bored the pants off fans including their own. Scraping wins by small margins including when I saw them at Boro win 1-0. all they had a was rock solid defence.
And to this day, Nicol still hasn't gotten over it. He despises Arsenal with every fiber of his being and I love it. He'll be bitter about this result for the rest of his life.
@@tikmik1789 pathetic considering Arsenal players ran to all corners of Anfield before kickoff giving flowers to Liverpool fans in the wake of Hillsborough.
Royal Arsenal Yeah but it's static. The the late 80s and 90s, people used to go mental when a goal was scored and it was wild. Home and away, big game or small game. Today when a goal goes in, they get their ipads out! It's the stand up and clap brigade. In the Anfield 89 era the passion was raw. Football today is sanitised garbage.
It's like that in all sports now. I'm coming from Canada and, when I was a kid, NHL games were electric. Now it's just a big corporate wank. I don't go, let alone drop $100 for a shitty seat. I had free tickets last year and went and, though the game is arguably better than it used to be, half the "fans" are there for work fucking around on their phones. You just sit there praying an errant puck hits one. The MLS is actually becoming the best league to watch even though it's a minor league by soccer standards. But the fans are true blue , loud and a lot of fun. It seems to be where people who actually enjoy a game spend their bucks now. Even on TV you can hear it's far louder than the local NHL team.
l rememeber this game so well on lTV's the match in late may 1989 ....As a Liverpool fan..when l look back on this now?.....I think both the tragic events at Hillsborough and this night in 1988/89 in this season is what knocked us off our perch...Even though we won the league back the following season...We've sadly have never been the same since...

I’m a Liverpool fan, was about 14 years old watching this at home possibly shell shocked but without doubt the most dramatic ending to a game ever with the most iconic commentary probably after “they think it’s all over..” The whole nation watching, the most emotional season, a brilliant LFC team and a great Arsenal kit to be fair! Man City Aguero miles behind this
There is something about this moment that makes me watch it over again and again. The pure rawness of emotions on both sides given the stakes this game had was so intense. Classic!
And it was live on Terrestrial TV too! I'm in that throng of Arsenal fans somewhere, 18! A bit older now and nothing has come close to that feeling, on that day at Anfield. A truly unforgettable experience, and what's more, travelling in the coaches leaving Highbury, the fire in the team that day, and the fans, was Awesome. We knew we could do it. And we did! I've seen the film, have the recording of the match on DVD, but thanks for posting this! If it's in our hands at the end of next season, we'll do it then too. But it won't be as awesome as this.
Not one Liverpool fan left the stadium when we lifted the trophy! After Hillsborough and there pain to endure that was hard on them so I hope this Sunday they get to put it right. Massive RESPECT from an Arsenal fan.
Something that often goes unnoticed was George Graham not celebrating in front of the Liverpool bench out of respect for the occasion and a gallant Liverpool side who had gone through an incredibly traumatic year (Hillsbrough) trying (and failing) to get his coaching staff and bench to do the same.
I was there In the arsenal end in the seats was 16 and all I remember is MT scoring and me and my pals going flying over 2 rows of seats what an unbelievable night 🥳🥳🥳
I'm not an Arsenal fan and I really don't like them at all but like most of the UK on that night because of who you were playing I watched the game with pals who supported Rangers, Celtic, Hearts, United, and Scum and everyone of us was celebrating afterwards as if it was our team. It's without doubt the greatest finish to any top class English season. A. Because it was the closest of all time and involved the top 2. and B. Because the whole country celebrated as one 🤣🤣🤣
Doesn't get any closer than this! The final goal needed in the near final minute of the final league match of the season, between the only two teams that were directly fighting for the title race. This will probably never happen again. 👏👏👏
No probably about it my friend. 😊 nothing could be this close or end like this. Absolutely mind blowing and George Graham summed it up when he said “no one is expecting us to do it, we’re just going to go out there and enjoy it” and enjoy it we did.
And 30+ years later, Arsenal and Liverpool produce another classic match. Saka so close to recreating that Michael Thomas goal and Liverpool denied by two world class Ramsdale saves.
Well done Arsenal. I'm a scouser. It killed me watching this. But some perspective. Hillsborough was 5 weeks earlier. We played the fa cup final on a Saturday, West ham on a Tuesday and this match on a Friday. Anyway, my Uncle was at the game and he applauded arsenal when they lifted the trophy like most of us did that night. Best climax to any football league season ever, will never be repeated ... I hate to admit haha
I’m so proud that this is the club I support. 20 years before my birth but Arsenal to the core. I will die someday, but I’ll make sure to die with an Arsenal kit near my deathbed.
I'm a Spurs fan. But this was pretty amazing. Having to not only beat Liverpool at Anfield but have to do it by 2 goals. Being shown on free tv with the whole nation watching.
Liverpool fan from Liverpool. I was 10 years old in 1989. Not ashamed to admit that on two occasions I cried while watching football - England getting knocked out of the world cup semi-final against West Germany on penalties in 1990 was the second. This moment was the first. Even though we were on the losing end, looking back now I can appreciate how amazing this really was. You couldn't make it up.
This was the baddest game ever! ... to go to anfield and had to win by 2 goals to get the title against the team to beat back then. Mad! Must of been the bug of the summer of love 89. Immortal 😂 ❤❤❤
I still feel the emotion from that game fantastic effort by everyone at the club. This is why they are all legends, memories for life. God speed Rocky!
Watched the game in the Wheatsheafs pub, Islington Green more in hope than expectation. I have never experienced such euphoria from watching football before or since at that moment when Lord Michael stuck the ball in the Scousers net - even winning the Prem at Old Trafford or Shite Hart Lane. That night was the start of a Bank Holiday weekend. I think I consumed my annual recommended units of alcohol in 4 days.
This was the beginning of the end for Liverpool - we didn't know it at the time, but it was the turning point in our tragic history since then. Overtaken by Manchester - United and now City.
We were absolutely shattered. Both physically and mentally. Remember, the Hillsborough tragedy was in the same season. That would have taken a massive toll on our players then. We just ran out of steam, and Arsenal deserved to win the title that season.
Arguably, it was the greatest and most dramatic top-flight Title win ever. Any Arsenal fan at the match that night must have been in seventh heaven as that second goal went in. Such a drama was positively Homeric. This game was certainly one of the most memorable and significant spectacles in football to be played out in modern times, possibly only equalled by Liverpool's similarly epic comeback in the Istanbul CL Cup Final some years later. It's because of games like this, that makes football what it is - the most compelling of sports, where one can go from complete despair to sheer jubilation and vice-versa in the space of 90 minutes.
Just a shame there weren't more shots of the Arsenal fans celebrating the goal. Those were the days, crammed in on the terrace; not likes today's plastic shite.
Liverpool were known as the devils spawn among evertonians (and I guess other fans) because of their renowned luck .... that night faith was restored in god. Well in gunners.
Best finish to a season EVER, man city doesnt either come close, as much as some might not want to admit, it will never be beat, just like 49 games unbeaten , ARSENAL FOREVER IN FOOTBALL HISTORY
I remember watching this live on TV with a plastic Liverpool fan (the rest of us were Wolves fans). About 10 seconds before Thomas scored, I said, 'oh well, Liverpool deserve it I suppose (glum faced). Then 'that' happened! I remember seeing Thomas celebrating his goal and he was flipping around like a salmon on a hot deck not knowing how to celebrate enough to merit the enormity of his achievement - still makes me smile.

Liverpool didn’t lose at home that hole season Liverpool were first and arsenal were second they had the same amount of points but arsenal has one less goal difference meaning they would have to score 2 goals up from Liverpool In the first half of the match nothing happened and everyone was shocked because (Liverpool one every home game that season) but in the second half arsenal successfully scored a goal everyone was screaming in which if the match ended like that Liverpool would of one because arsenal were away so they talking as thin as margins. Anyway the match went on there was 1 minute left the ball went to arsenals keeper he kicked it up the pitch to the left winger he passed to Michael Thomas he dribbled through three defensive players kicked it and it chipped over the keeper and went in the goal everyone was screaming they were all celebrating together and as an arsenal fan I still remember the adrenaline it gave me and I still sometimes get goosebumps but to this day Michael Thomas is still a legend and always will be

Mee too. 4 o'clock am, cannot sleep. So reading this very special episode of arsenal history on the bed. It was so perfectly narrated that I had to watch the goal. And oof course I had to listen to the commentators as well, so I have got out the bedroom to watch-listen to it (I did three times) what a dramatic moment. I am Spanish, I lived in Spain and I was 11 at that moment. I was unaware of this moment and today, 30 years later, fever pitch has brought to me this epic moment.
I'm AS Roma fan, i watched this for first time in 2001, one week after the defeat with the hateful liverpool. You can Image how i was feeling 😁 from this Arsenal is my first fav English team (in the last years Newcastle United and Leicester City, too), Come on you Gunners and Forza Roma!
To be fair City were down 2-1 into the 90th minute so it was a near impossible success... though QPR did make it somewhat easier as they knew they were safe and allowed City to constantly throw pressure into the box. '89 still better, 1st vs 2nd defined by essentially the last kick of the game... Liverpool was no QPR especially at Anfield in the 80s, no chance anyone saw Arsenal score so late, at Loftus Road there was always a sense that City would score again once it was 2-2.
@@sejason56Being objective, as a City fan, there are pros and cons to both. Yes City were only playing QPR, I disagree about what you said about them allowing it, there was a last ditch tackle to try and stop Aguero and I can’t remember who but a QPR player said most of them didn’t know they were safe, as the bench had only just started celebrating 20 seconds earlier, but as you say, it was 2 goals needed in injury time to win it. I also think the fact we were up against United for the league, the club who are our most hated rivals and had ridiculed us for decades, just made it more special. Arsenal playing the team who started the day in 1st and winning by 2 clear goals is a better achievement on the day, but I just think City’s meant more to City fans because of the context of going 44 years without a league and it being against United for the title. I am biased though.
Look at the CLASS of George Graham. Respectful for LFC, having in fresh memory what happened to their club and fans at Hilsborough, not only refused to celebrate at ther ground himself, but also calming down his staff members just to avoid anything bad that could happen to each sides fans.
It took the PL 23 years to have their very own Anfield 89 moment. Yes the Man City game was great, but it wasn’t anywhere near as dramatic as this game. You had to have been around at that time to realise how special that moment was.
I was in Tenerife on Friday May the 26th 1989 watching this live. I felt very sorry for LFC as they had just attended 94 odd funerals in the most horrific of circumstances - and to lose the league with the last kick is very cruel

I am confident that the ecstasy of the City fans in 2012 eclipses even that of the Arsenal fans in 1989.
arsenal0782 I wasn't too young, no.
Arsenal fan by any chance? :)
arsenal0782 I think this other chap is trying to wind you up, probably best to ignore him! What a moment though
ITV sport, and Brian Moore and Brian Clough finest hour. Great performance by Arsenal against the odds.
It's not Clough. It's David Pleat.
Still gives me goosebumps watching this after all these years.
There's a picture out there with Steve McMahon signalling his team mates 1 more minute. Then we go and score... glorious
1988-89 probably the most memorable season in english football
That is up there as one of the strangest comments ever. Small matter of 97 football fans killed the previous month? Liverpool were not even going to finish the season. Players were considering retirement.
how many retired exactly? @@garethfieldstead7547
Sorry mate but Arsenal bored the pants off fans including their own. Scraping wins by small margins including when I saw them at Boro win 1-0. all they had a was rock solid defence.
Pretty sure that was 1995/96 mate
“Aldridge is down, Barnes is down, Dalglish just stands there. Nicol’s on his knees, McMahon’s on his knees”
Some of those Liverpool players refused to shake hands with arsenal after the game. Lil bitches
No wonder Nicol's on ESPN hates our guts hahaha :-P
And to this day, Nicol still hasn't gotten over it. He despises Arsenal with every fiber of his being and I love it. He'll be bitter about this result for the rest of his life.
Sour grapes. Arsenal had every right to win our first league title in 88/89
@@tikmik1789 pathetic considering Arsenal players ran to all corners of Anfield before kickoff giving flowers to Liverpool fans in the wake of Hillsborough.
Arsenal fans in the away end at Anfield were a totally different breed to the new yuppies that have taken over the Emirates.
Look at away games, they are almost always louder then home support.
TOSILENCE77 spot on mate.
Working class been priced out, Middle class priced in
25 years ago today, IT'S UP FOR GRABS NOW!!!!!!!!!!
markgbullen Deary me 😂😂😂
Make that 31.. Still Gold. And as a Chelsea fan even, it gives you goosebumps. Epic moment
Still gives me goosebumps, all these years later.
l rememeber this game so well on lTV's the match in late may 1989
....As a Liverpool fan..when l look back on this now?.....I think both the tragic events at Hillsborough and this night in 1988/89 in this season is what knocked us off our perch...Even though we won the league back the following season...We've sadly have never been the same since...
Agree
I agree but please explain
@@adebolabloke6962 Well mentally....the invinisbilty that liverpool had always had throughout the 1980s had been damaged after the 1988-89 season....but now?... klopp has put us back on top
Classic!
What a night, what an atmosphere, what a finish. Gives me "goosebubbles" every time. If you know, you know.COYG
Leeds fan here . That was why the beautiful game is so special.
Incredible game !
Put a big smile on my face again - Arteta needs to play this to the current team. This is the Arsenal boys now get out there and win.
Maybe he played it to them this season....
13 years old watching my team win the title for the first time in my life was so emotional. Especially when we beat Liverpool at Anfield to do it. ❤
Something that often goes unnoticed was George Graham not celebrating in front of the Liverpool bench out of respect for the occasion and a gallant Liverpool side who had gone through an incredibly traumatic year (Hillsbrough) trying (and failing) to get his coaching staff and bench to do the same.
as A Manchester United Fan and fan of the game in general this and The Noucamp99 moments rank the best in HISTORY.
I was there In the arsenal end in the seats was 16 and all I remember is MT scoring and me and my pals going flying over 2 rows of seats what an unbelievable night 🥳🥳🥳
I’m an Arsenal fan, but surely, we can all agree that this is what makes football magic.
Yeah no corruption like now with city ....enjoy 3nd division man city ....cost liverpool 2 titles
Here because of aftv invincibles podcast, big up Robbie & Lee Judges
Doesn't get any closer than this!
The final goal needed in the near final minute of the final league match of the season, between the only two teams that were directly fighting for the title race.
This will probably never happen again. 👏👏👏
It's football, it definitely will
No probably about it my friend. 😊 nothing could be this close or end like this.
Absolutely mind blowing and George Graham summed it up when he said “no one is expecting us to do it, we’re just going to go out there and enjoy it” and enjoy it we did.
@antonyclement8871
I remember it like it was yesterday. As a Blade supporter, I thought it was brilliant!
And 30+ years later, Arsenal and Liverpool produce another classic match. Saka so close to recreating that Michael Thomas goal and Liverpool denied by two world class Ramsdale saves.
Imagine if Saka got to that ball before Allison did... History would've probably repeated itself.
If only martinelli could pass like smithy 😢
@@deathdragonslayer1 Lads will pick themselves up and move onto West Ham. We gotta win.
We were watching it at work on evening shift, the crew room absolutely erupted!
30 years ago today. A beautiful moment. The greatest end to any league season in history.
Greatest end to a season that included the hillsborough disaster only a month earlier - yeah right.
Hahaha Barnes will not be denied, yes he will.
🗣️🤣🤣
Gooners know this is the best line ever
We’ve gone and won the league at Anfield, old Trafford and that dump in N17 twice all our biggest rivals who else has done that
I'm a Spurs fan.
30 years ago and it’s still the most dramatic end to a league season ever!!
John Aldridge showing his class at the end to his Irish International team mate 😀✌
"It's up for grabs now!" What a line..
Was in a restaurant in Phuket watching this--the locals wanted Liverpool! Greatest night for me!
Mickey Thomas scoring this one goal made him an Arsenal legend forever. Absolute hero at the right place and time
This one game will Never be Earased from my mind. Kept replaying it till today and will do forever. Every special moments.
Most dramatic and memorable finish ever to an English league season. Everyone went crazy bar Liverpool and Spurs fans.
This was the baddest game ever! ... to go to anfield and had to win by 2 goals to get the title against the team to beat back then. Mad! Must of been the bug of the summer of love 89. Immortal 😂 ❤❤❤
27th anniversary, hard to believe. Footballs greatest ever moment.
threedoubles not exactly, probably 05 CL final
Leicester winning the league
- 6-1 "la remontada"
- Man city "aguerooooooo"
Still close anyway
GOAT Aguero's goal was by no means better than this, and Barca's 6-1 was marred by allegations of corruption
Absolutely eclipsed by aguero. When you think of Man City you think of that goal, when you think of arsenal you think of fantv 😂
I still feel the emotion from that game fantastic effort by everyone at the club. This is why they are all legends, memories for life. God speed Rocky!
27 years later I still get goose bumps seeing it
Watched the game in the Wheatsheafs pub, Islington Green more in hope than expectation.
But yall won the league again the season after... or do you mean an end to your reign of terror cause if so then yeah
I remember watching this live on TV . Still gives me goosebumps 35 years later !
The greatest finish in the history of football 💯
I remember watching this live on TV with a plastic Liverpool fan (the rest of us were Wolves fans). About 10 seconds before Thomas scored, I said, 'oh well, Liverpool deserve it I suppose (glum faced). Then 'that' happened! I remember seeing Thomas celebrating his goal and he was flipping around like a salmon on a hot deck not knowing how to celebrate enough to merit the enormity of his achievement - still makes me smile.
The one and only Brian Moore with his iconic sporting voice that lit up my childhood! Still can’t believe this happened? Proper fairytale stuff! Just wow!!!
I'm your 5th like
Not an Arsenal fan but this was fantastic to watch as a young footballer. What an advert for football,it had everything.Nothing like the cross we watch on sky sports show
Before there was Sergio Aguerro, there was Michael Thomas.
I was working in jersey C I at the time im a man city fan but the brother is a big Arsenal fan i was delighted for Arsenal never thought id see anything close to that but yep i was in manchester and in the ground 93 20 Agureooooooooooo game Dublin ireland
Liverpool didn’t lose at home that hole season Liverpool were first and arsenal were second they had the same amount of points but arsenal has one less goal difference meaning they would have to score 2 goals up from Liverpool
In the first half of the match nothing happened and everyone was shocked because (Liverpool one every home game that season) but in the second half arsenal successfully scored a goal everyone was screaming in which if the match ended like that Liverpool would of one because arsenal were away so they talking as thin as margins. Anyway the match went on there was 1 minute left the ball went to arsenals keeper he kicked it up the pitch to the left winger he passed to Michael Thomas he dribbled through three defensive players kicked it and it chipped over the keeper and went in the goal everyone was screaming they were all celebrating together and as an arsenal fan I still remember the adrenaline it gave me and I still sometimes get goosebumps but to this day Michael Thomas is still a legend and always will be
Was working night shift at a sewage treatment plant on this night. Small transistor radio glued to my ear. When Arsenal scored Jonathan Pearce went ballistic on London Capitol Gold. So did i. Could have heard me all over Croydon. And im not a Gunners fan! Absolutely magical.
Fever Pitch brought me here.
Me 2 .
@@Bucci86Marco thanks bro i love Roma i like to think of Arsenal as the British AS Roma
Superb night. I still get goosebumps, and can remember
"Thomas, it's grab for grabs now! Thomas! Right at the end!!"
Thomas’ and Martinelli’s goals are eerily similar in execution and would be in effect if we win the league by 1 point next month.
100 Times better than that overhyped sky sports City goal
I hate City with a passion, but overhyped? Piss off
Overhyped? lol
100x better for an Arsenal fan sure, but still a great ending.
BEAUTIFUL
Look at the CLASS of George Graham. Respectful for LFC, having in fresh memory what happened to their club and fans at Hilsborough, not only refused to celebrate at ther ground himself, but also calming down his staff members just to avoid anything bad that could happen to each sides fans.
Being a Manchester United fan I remember this & fukin loving it.
Love the way George Graham telling them to calm down
We are winning the league at Anfield this season, mark my words
Thomas, it's up for grabs now! Thomas!
It took the PL 23 years to have their very own Anfield 89 moment. Yes the Man City game was great, but it wasn’t anywhere near as dramatic as this game. You had to have been around at that time to realise how special that moment was.

One of the most iconic victory calls of all time!
I'm not an Arsenal fan but this is the greatest ever English top flight finish.Look at all the ingredients,I can't see this ever being equalled.
Just imagine being in that away end...
I was in Tenerife on Friday May the 26th 1989 watching this live.
I felt very sorry for LFC as they had just attended 94 odd funerals in the most horrific of circumstances - and to lose the league with the last kick is very cruel
