I was in HS when this movie was popular. It was an instant classic with all of us. I think one of our teachers even put it on in class at the end of the year. We laughed at it in HS in the late 80's and now us in our mid-40's laugh at it all the more!!
I remember hearing him say in an interview he didn't like it because it made him look like a dork, but I think this is one of his best roles, and one of my favorite movies of all time
I just learned she passed away in September 2013. I just watched BOD again tonight with my mom.Funny film with surreal humor. She was also in Cusack's film, "One Crazy Summer" as the crossing guard. "If you make ugly faces and someone hits you in the back, your face stays that way, forever!"
Yes indeed. Sad to say, I just found out on www.imdb.com that Laura Waterbury (aka "Mrs. Smith") was not very old when she died of Alzheimer's disease on September 25, 2013 (she was 66). ;-(
John Cusack seems to have recanted, check out Wikipedia. I can see why John might have flipped out then, but he would have to be pretty insensitive not to appreciate this film's charm by now. Eveyone who likes it really loves it. This movie really touched me and my friends and helped me get over my own disappointing high school experiences. It's a great movie!
Indeed it is Bikewithlove. Yes, I know this movie is rather silly in some parts, but in my honest opinion, it's silly in the sense that YOU JUST HAVE TO LAUGH! :-) I have this movie on DVD -- back in February 2004 I IMMEDIATELY thought of this movie and put it in my DVD player and played it right after my girlfriend abruptly dumped me. :-)
If he hated the movie so much,i wonder why a year later he did "One Crazy Summer"which was written and directed by the same person"Savage Steve Holland"that did"Better Off Dead".
SO funny that back then, a TV fireplace was cheesy. Now- there are channels that devote their Christmas morning programming to that of a burning fireplace. HA!
There's a scene with Monique and Lane that is an inside joke because Lane never saw Mrs. Smith do the smoosh-face thing with Monique but he imitates her doing it to Monique when she's throwing the lemons at the parking sign.
this is a really funny movie lol love how he is all messed up he's got a cigarete in his mouth with the tiny bear that he's talking to "wait a minute mr. bear this is crazy i bet we get her back" lol and he's all wasted in the car then wham he drives backwards into the garage. the poor father did all those windows man that must suck! this is a funny ass 80's movie i'll tell ya that!
1:05 Other than Beth rubbing into his face how great her Christmas morning is going, I don't know why Lane has that look. If my mother sucked at cooking, I would have loved to get a stack of tv dinners. God! I love this movie!!!
Prob'the best pt in the movie-although this whole movie has great scenes through out-like the jello moving off the plate,or dancing hamburger playing guitar, him try'n diff'ways to commit suicide, owner of the restaurant,or everyone try'n to date his ex-this movie is up there w/16candles&wedding singer. But that'68 camaro ss is the reason to see this movie.
Like this if you fell as madly in love with Diane Franklin (Monique Junet) the first time you saw this like I did when I was a boy...and then please check out her autobiography at Amazon. If you were arrested by her the first time, you'll know it's really a life sentence...swoon!!!
No Mr. Bear this is crazy! Weil get her back... *Car crashes through garage* X3 How come i never see this movie anymore? I used to watch this with my dad when i was little
It's strange that you can't watch this on Amazon or through Google movies. I had to buy the dvd off ebay. Same thing with Eddie and the Cruisers parts 1 and 2
I know the catalog of movies streaming on platforms changes on a regular basis. This one isn't on Amazon Prime Video or Netflix. The physical media can be purchased from Amazon. $4.99 for the DVD version, $9.99 Bluray, and $14.99 VHS. I just added the non-affiliate link, to help others in the future.
This movie is extremely underrated! One of the best comedies of the 1980s!
Agreed...IMO maybe best comedy of all time!
@Begodecrashtestdummy Sorry, but my grandma dropped acid and hijacked a school bus. Its kind of a bad time right now.
Definitely 🎄
The actress who plays Ricky's mom is so perfect in this role.
@Big Steve no it's not...
Chriiiiiiiiiismaaaaaaaaaaaaas...😂
It's sad she died of Alzheimer's disease... ☹
When I think about it, when you’re looking for a movie to show someone looking into 80’s teen move tropes -that is a perfect summary of all that.
Considering her cooking, that is actually the best present she can give.
All them tv dinners LOL
Your comment made my ass ROLL 😆🤣😂😹😆🤣😂😹😆🤣😂😹😆🤣😂😹😆🤣😂😹😆🤣
I wonder where that prop ended up. It has hilarity value.
The cherry on top is that the neighbor has the aardvark jacket too. That was the gift to give that year!
only one of the best movies EVER!
xD you are 1000 times right
Much agreed!!
My wife and I still say “Christmas” like Ricky’s mom 😂😂
Right on. I think it in my head. LoL
Chriss MISS!!! lol

I STILL quote this movie years later! VERY original writing and comedy! "Christmas!!! Do you haver Christmas in France?"
i'm 36 and to this day this movie still has me lmao
43 and still laughing!
32 and still laughing to this
22 and still laughing
58 and LMAO!!
i’m 8 years late to this comment, but 15 and still laughing!
My girlfriend from this time period and I laughed so hard we almost past out
Rest in peace Daneen

How Diane Franklin kept a straight face when her face is getting squeezed with Ricky’s mom in her face with “Christmas”.
I remember hearing him say in an interview he didn't like it because it made him look like a dork, but I think this is one of his best roles, and one of my favorite movies of all time
Didn’t he literally play a dork in Sixteen Candles? He skied the K12, nothing dorky about that…
Acting can be portraying someone you are not

this film is one of the unsung greats and it couldve never been made today
Ricky's clown Monchihi. Lmfao. That shit is classic!
"Corn and season sauce. Ha. He likes corn." That scene is perfect.
John Cusack seems to have recanted, check out Wikipedia. I can see why John might have flipped out then, but he would have to be pretty insensitive not to appreciate this film's charm by now. @@MegaSammy70 Contractual obligation, maybe?
It did age very well. Not overly hoakie, just the right level of cheese. Also the final scene is pretty epic.
You know, if I got a picture of Dan Schneider for Christmas and I was a teenage girl, I'd be weirded out too.
I think that's the best case scenario when it comes to Dan Schneider and teenage girls.
That was Dan Schneider!? Holy sh*t!
@@tomboyjessie1352...sad to say yes
I LOVED this movie. I have seen it waaaaay to many times. Same with Revenge of the Nerds. Still remember the songs. 🙋🏼♀️😂
Even barney rubble asks layne if he could take out beth.
"It's sure....warm..." 😆😂🤣 still one of my favorite quotes from this movie
The portrait of Ricky makes me laugh!
Top 5 movie of all time!
#1 movie of all time!!!
I love 80's movie's.
you have christmas in france? Chriiiiiiisssssmess.
SO funny that back then, a TV fireplace was cheesy. Now- there are channels that devote their Christmas morning programming to that of a burning fireplace. HA!
This was always one of my favorite movies Cusack did.... CHRISTMAS....CHRISTMAS!!!! LOL

chunkyfreaky You know, Frieend...FriEEEEND...
I noticed that.
But how did he know because he wasn't there?
@@JusticeFortheSilenced the magic of story telling.
@@turnertalking aahhhh
One of the best Christmas movies ever made.
True that.
My family watched this every year when I was growing up. I still consider this the most underrated 80's movie of all time.
Flipping that photo present over, was the most startling depressing moment ever
One of the best movies ever !
Best Christmas movie ever!
She seriously gave them frozen TV dinners for presents, lmao.
In all fairness it actually IS a great gift after seeing those wacky dinners she made throughout the movie... 😏
@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854 hah, their faces when they unwrap them, and the mom just talking about it, cracks me.
Kim Darby. Wonderful actress. Starred in an episode of the original Star Trek "Miri"
@@mcgannahanskyjellyfetti6854I seriously almost fell out of my chair when Lane's breakfast crawled away. 😂 "It's got raisins. You like raisins"
LMFAO!!! Giftwrapped TV dinners! LOL.
+coy clown It's corn, he likes corn.
HAHAHA!! :D
I feel bad for the Dad more than Lane or Moniques hahaha
"Chrissss-misss. Crissmiss."
LMFAO!!!
This movie was amazing. The best. Everyone remembers it. Two dollars!!
"He likes corn." LMAO!!!
One of the best films ever!
I hung out with him in the LA Connection in 1978. He told me if he had a sister it would be me. He was brilliant back then. Died untimely.
1:37 is so classic!
Lane says to teddy bear.."How come you're so small"
forgot how funny this movie is!!
Best warped Christmas scene EVER!
It's official! This is my favorite Christmas movie, sorry Die hard.
LMAO my dad does the it's christmas thing every year!
1:14 The look on his face LMFAO
WTF, this one is ultra HD!!! awesome
Thank you so much for uploading!
The dad was Major Charles Emerson Winchester III.
this is a really funny movie lol love how he is all messed up he's got a cigarete in his mouth with the tiny bear that he's talking to "wait a minute mr. bear this is crazy i bet we get her back" lol and he's all wasted in the car then wham he drives backwards into the garage. the poor father did all those windows man that must suck! this is a funny ass 80's movie i'll tell ya that!

The TV dinners always crack me up.
Wish I could watch this! It looks so good😩😩it’s not on Netflix or Hulu or here
This was a great gift, a photo of someone unforgettable, a jacket made from 🐜 eater fur, and an exploded garage.
Did you ever realize you are wrong? Cusack was born in Evanston, Illinois, to a Catholic Irish-American family. That is one example.
“Do they have Christmas in France? “. Hahahaha
A friend of mine told me about this movie. One of the weirdest movies I’ve ever seen
I love how the neighbor is also wearing an identical aardvark coat.
"Everyone will be wearing them!"
Favorite scene....TWO DOLLARS!
I love the TV dinner gifts.

1:34 best scene in the whole movie
I found out today that Ricky is played by Dan Schneider. It somehow makes the movie funnier to know that 🤣
Sadly, She just past away in September

It was awesome I loved it
You know I started rewatching this film, and i forgot how excessively obsessively creepy Lane was over his ex.
Ricky Smith was MY FAVORITE character in this movie... 😂👍
Now they got to fix the whole garage door.
when they show the neighbor wearing the same aardvark suit i lost it! she did say everyone would be wearing one she new!!
HAHAHAHAH!!!!! Damn right, we loved it. lol
Ricky With The Swag
That TV now looks like a microwave oven that's on fire.

Notice Lane removed ALL his Beth pictures from his room...
You got to feel for him. Fixing the windows Johnny broke had to feel good.
The True car of my dreams!

I think the dad is one of the best characters in the movie
you know. i had doctor doom's cycle from the secret wars toyline back then and it was not motorized and it did not make that noise.
Wish it was available for digital purchase.
I should clarify- I meant to say a "TV showing a fireplace" was cheesy.
Remember that guy on Star Trek who had to go home to commit ritual suicide? Hes Lanes father.
Chrissssmasss! Cooorrrssmass!
Do you have Christmas in Fraance?
chriiiiiistmas
There were several serious cries for help here that went unaddressed.
Ah, Kim Darby was unexpected.
Whats with the tv in the fireplace showing logs burning LMAO!!! wtf LOL
I've seen people actually doing it. It's as silly as it looked.
