- Tracie Bennett interview and performance of 'Just in Time' as Judy Garland from 'End of the Rainbow'
Paul O'Grady Show - 22nd April 2011
Just seen Tracie in Coronation Street and she gave me chills like actors rarely do. I had to look her up. What a terrific inspiration. She’s reminded me why I’m still an artist. ❤️❤️
I am a huge Judy fan...and this gal is DAMN GREAT!!! I wish I could see the show!
Seriously!! If you can get to see her in the show..go!! Amazing!!!!
She is simply amazing how is she not a superstar? Xxx
"You know where I think this sould go? Broadway!" I watched End of the Rainbow last Tuesday in NY on Broadway!!! Way to go Tracie!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!
I cant wait to go see this on broadway in a few months!
saw it last January...amazing performance...the ending surprising
Saw the show on B'way tonight.
Bennett is amazing. Great cast, great musicians.
I saw her as Garland in London, it was brilliant..you really have to see the performance, not just go on this interview
Wow ❤
saw the show at the Ahmanson...laughter and tears throughout. Tracie Bennett is brilliant!
see the show. its one thing to watch a video but to see her live is just wonderful.
Just saw Tracie Bennett and the brilliant cast of 'End of the Rainbow' in Cardiff. When people say something is "AMAZING!!!" it is on the whole hyperbole, in this instance amazing comes nowhere near how completely: exceptional, astonishing, bewildering...infact almost indescribable Ms Bennett's performance is. I urge anyone who has the chance to catch this powerful play with music to do, you won't regret it!
Tracie is true to the lovely Judy in her final months: flawed, funny and fabulous!!!
I also saw it in Birmingham tonight (20/10/2011) it was FANTASTIC!!! You MUST try and catch it.
I've watched end of the rainbow twice! OMG its amazing!! I cant wait to get the chance to see it again! Tracie Bennett is just incredible! Funnily enough this goes to Broadway next year!! :)
The show is great, you will enjoy it immensely.
She was Sharon, Rita's foster daughter in Corrie (1982)
Carl Niblock remember it well 😀
Pure excellence.
@wildwestguy. see the play first and you'll know what all the fuss is about. She is Judy Garland on stage. Standing ovations every night for six months must tell you something.
Just saw it last night. Fabulous!
She's nominated for a Tony and everyone bashing her is not. She has her own take on it and she isn't a cheap knock-off of Judy. If you've seen her live, you know the magic the audience feels when she sings Judy's songs and her acting is impeccable. You don't feel like you're watching an actress; you're watching Judy Garland up on that stage. This play is about her resilience from everything that happened to her and that should be celebrated, not criticized
Anybody else think she looks like Blanche on Golden Girls?
probably Blanche character was shaped on Judy!! :)
AMAZING
Saw Tracie Bennett at TheTrafalgar Studios...................I was Gobsmacked!!!!!!!!
Heard shes taking the show to Broadway!!
She's absolutely superb!
She's horrendous
Kris, that's a good point. She's definitely a charismatic performer.
Paul, you didn't come out loving Judy, who you profess to have never liked. You came out loving Tracie. Whatever the hell "loving" means in this day and age - people are so quick to jump on bandwagons and much quicker to fall off them.
Tracie is brilliant! And for those haters, why do want exact replicas of Judy. Tracie has energy and an approximation of what Garland is! I love Judy. But Tracie makes her come to life. Besides who else but I has all 24 episodes of Judy's T.V. series. Thats what should be made into a movie. The horrible year that Judy made her CBS show. Bennet could it!
Seen every single performance have you? Seems you might have missed a few if you haven't seen her energy manifest itself in grand, broken physical gesture.
And if you're looking for Judy, why are you watching this? Go watch Judy.
Can hardly wait for the Ahmanson run. I intend to be at the 1st performance.
saw in brum yesterday brilliant
Come on, guys/girls. Let's get her in big films. This is astonishing.x
i really love Tracie from her performance in scott and bailey as rachel bailey's mother. She is the kind of actress that humanises, makes you sympathise with even the most selfish, pathetic, awful characters to land in a showrunner's lap, its magical.
@BWAY62 she is indeed :-)! i love tracie more than anything she did this performance amazing she sent shivers up my spine
I just sent a comment to The Guthrie Theatre since I just saw the show. Yes....amazing, but with a slightly faulty ending.......so that was my message......I hope they get it. She deserves a Tony award.
Tracie is the most talented performer I have ever seen!
Wonderful performance. I have no idea who she's supposed to be, but I love the performance.
EXCELENT
Aound her last years, yes she did.
@123malichi She is. So excited.
I read a few good reviews of "End of the Rainbow"which is on Broadway now,yet after this performance I am vey much displeased. I don't think she sounds,or acts lke Judy. Perhaps no one can,I have enjoyed Isabel Keating in "The boy from Oz". I don't think I will be traveling to NYC to see this show.
Have you ever seen Judy Garland?
No offense to Tracie Bennett, but I've noticed that men tend to imitate Judy Garland better than most women. A great example is the JudyCast podcast in iTunes....especially the early episodes. That guy is brilliant both speaking and singing, and it's interesting to hear him do Judy singing Madonna, Nirvana, etc.
Judy didn't jump around like that
@535Duke Exactly! ..This girl has talent for sure, but just not able to channel Judy in her performance.
I don't think Judy would have been a Paul O'Grady fan either
Isabel Keating looks and sounds more like Judy Garland.
The show may have been emotional, but it definitely wasn't truthful to what happened.
She's good, I mean vocally stunning...but its more like Blanche Devereaux doing Judy...as in not a vulnerable bone in her body in this performance.
But then, as she said she wasn't trying to be an exact replica of Judy bot more of an interpretation. Only Judy can be Judy. Also she is portraying Judy Garland at the end of her life...
Now Renee Zellwegger is doing this
When I watch Bennett's Garland, I sometimes wonder if it's just a crappy Katharine Hepburn impression in disguise.
She is a cute actress. This play is vile.
She's got the physicality of judy nailed and she does have a quality of her voice that COULD be like hers IF she learned how to do the accent properly - singers from Judy's era had a very different accent to american singers today. To me she sounds more like Liza becuase of that. But bang-up job. Didn't see this in London and won't see Judy becuase i have no interest in plotlines that just focus on the 'tragic judy' story that's been done to death.
first of all i wasn't being insulting to Miss Bennett, just saying as a fan, and a LONG time fan, and follow Judy Garland impersonator, Judy was never that hyper. Judy got energy while performing but didn't jump around like a jumping bean, people should do reach when doing a real person, specially Garland, judy Davis and Tammy Blancher did a excellent job as Garland in judy's life story for TV
I have to agree with you about the bouncing. I've seen a lot of Judy Garland on tv from the 60s, and bouncing was one thing she did not do.
She isn't pretending to be Judy in this interview she's just made up like her.
I agree it was painful, but I was thinking she sounded more like a bad Katharine Hepburn impression. She does sound like a nice woman, though.
I don't know how to feel about this woman. Nothing like Judy ...Her wail if horrific.
Not really that close to Judy. There is nothing in this rendition that makes me want to hear it again. This is one of my favorite Judy songs & I listen to it repeatedly when it is on. Tracie hits a few notes like Judy but doesn't seem to have the warmth or charm that Judy had. Judy also didn't breathe as loudly when she sang. I guess if you have to go to a theatre to see Judy rather than just watch her wonderful performances this is better than nothing ... but it isn't Judy & it isn't good.
Not a bad job at all, but someone needs to tell her not to pronounce words like "you" and "where" so posh-British - Judy never did that. That's how Julie Andrews would say them!
Absolutely nothing like garland
yeah but drag queens lipsync and she isnt
Watch a fella on UA-cam called 'Jim Bailey'... no lip sync
I think this seems a little too.... rehearsed? I think it is good.. It just doesn't seem off the cuff enough to be like Judy. That spontaneous passion is missing for me. Maybe if she had a 5 vodka tonics and someone yelled at her just before hand it would be there-- but she is good. Just... too good-- if that makes any sense at all. hmm. meh.
Take a look at some of the Jim Bailey tapes as Judy. He's not lipsyncing and is a much better Judy than Tracie Bennett.
It's a bit over the top. I don't think Judy was ever that breath-y.
Aside from being mammals, I don't see what this person and Judy had in common.
I do not see anything in this that makes me think of Judy..it's just not that good at all!
If anything she sounded more like Liza with a touch of Katherine Hepburn. No judy in there for me.
Worst Judy imitation ever. I saw it in New York. She comes on full force, level ten and remains there throughout. No dynamics at all. Terrible.
Judy never growled.
Jimmy James is a million times better.
It's worth remembering that there was only ONE Garland and that nobody is ever going to top her. However, I think Bennett does a great job considering she sings all the songs live and has to cover a great deal emotionally. Jim Bailey is excellent too - but he had a long time to perfect his act.
I'm sure she's a lovely women...however this interpretation is not very good
I'm sure Ms. Bennett is a fantastic performer in her own right -- but as a jaded American, I must state my opinion that she doesn't sound or look anything like Judy Garland.
Judy garland was not like that in anyway
a fish trying to be a drag queen! this has about as much resemblance to Judy Garland as we have.
Horrendous. Since when did Judy dance like that? Also, the microphone cord? And let's not even get started on the voice
Awful
This was god awful
Wow, that was PAINFUL.
Garland's voice was no doubt ragged at times near the end, but never as wobbly and off-key as Bennett. And as ill as Garland was, she was smart enough to never have gone on stage sounding as poorly as this tacky impersonator (who sounds more like Minelli, if anyone)...
