    5:00 Funny that it's taken for granted that IBM's four incompatible computer platforms from the 1960s is a horrible clusterfluff. Didn't Donald Knuth once observe that premature monoculture is the root of all evil? And what if AMD hadn't had the balls to step up? One shudders to think of how the workstation world would now look in the aftermath of Intel's Itanium monoculture. The ISA is actually the least of it. With the wrong MMU architecture, Unix could not have been developed as we know it now. Consolidation and regularization sounds grand on first blush (skin deep), but it can also become a catastrophe of premature shackles just as readily.
