    In August, al Nusra Front jihadists took control of Syria’s side of the border crossing with Israel and kidnapped over 40 United Nations peacekeepers - who have since been released.
    But al Nusra Front, an al Qaeda-affiliate, isn’t Israel’s only threat from Syria. President Bashar al-Assad’s military, in a possible effort to bait Israel into its civil war to shore up Arab sympathies, has been lobbing mortars across the border. Just a few weeks ago, the Israeli military shot down a Syrian plane flying over the Golan Heights - the first time it has done so since the 1980s.
    In part four of a five-part series, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky meets the group caught in the middle of the conflict across the border - the Druze of the Majdal Shams village.

    I really don't get question about the fence.So here we have druze village and on other side is civil war with a lot jihadi terrorists who see both jews and druze as enemies,so how this fence even from druze point of view can be bad thing?

    Hey guys i have a friend that was in the I.D.F. and he saw people on the other side Egypt crying for food and water and my friends as a soldier went to help them... and guess what??? he was murdered b/c he was a Jew... we try to help every one... in Turkey we used to help in earthquakes, we offered help in pakistan, we were the first and the only one out of 2 hospitals that we built in the Bahamas after the huriccane, i have a friend that went to help in the far east after the title wave...
    by the way i never hear about the much richer countries around us like Qatar help them, even though i know they buy football clubs in the millions and support terror and build amazing buildings

    Simon, are those fence questions are for real? This is a boarder between 2 countries with no peace agreements. On the other side of this fence, one of the most horrible civil war in modern history is happening. What did you expect? FREE HUGS signs???

    I got a feeling from the "trailer" that this series was supposed to profile how life is in Israel with a brutal civil war going on right at its borders, not politicizing things like continuously referring to the Golan as "occupied", showing Israelis as emotionless to the civil war, making Israelis look militaristic, and making it seem that people are being "oppressed" within Israel. This whole series smells of being scripted with the trip to Israel being necessary only because they needed to capture some video.

    What new fence ? What occupation ? I am Israeli and i served there in the border, all the soldiers mostly train or are doing patrols on the border. It is sometimes even forbidden to enter the villages, because there is no reason for the army to be there. We occupy nobody there. The Druzes all have Israeli citizenship and can work, learn and do whatever they want like every Israeli citizen in all the country. This is NOT Palestinian territories. The fence is here and was here since ages. The new thing about it is it became electronic and more sophisticated. But trust me, even if you remove completely the fence, you still have 50 years of landmines, anti tank mines, and anti-tank trenches all over the border. So stop the crap and do some research. BTW, i love druzes and their culture is one of the most intriguing of the middle east. also they are mostly good people, and always enjoyed a good talk with them when i was patroling on the border back then.

      check UN resolution 497, know the facts. And yes, the Druze and everyone in the Golan Heights will be better off if that area stays occupied - apparently more and more are applying for citizenship. That might be a way to a solid solution.

    • @baronnuuke7821
      @baronnuuke7821 9 років тому +3

      nilsca I know the UN doesn't recognize the annexation. My point was it is not occupied the same way West Bank is, because the population are under Israeli law and the Druzes doesn't care if they have to live in Israel or Syria. They are normal people who just want a quiet place with no wars, dictatorships or chemical attacks.

    It pisses me off that this woman is crying against the "occupation" and does'nt understand why there is a fence(really? are you an idiot?) yet she openly says she does'nt regret living in our country and having a first world quality of life. I can understand why she's pissed about not being given immediate permit to go to her parents' funeral but the situation is fragile. Also in real life most Druze would not want to be under Syria again.

    it wast until recently easily for syrians in the golan to enter syria, from 1967- till 1998/2000 it was difficult, the one that made it possible was azmi bishara: At the time a politician in the knesset exiled since 2007 living in qatar nowdays and works for al jazeera and now a major critic of assad.
