Have been using oversize less taper grips for a couple years. This video inspired me to try Jumbo grips. Some backorder issues delayed delivery so just a couple rounds with the Jumbo size. A bit different at first, but became comfortable after a few holes. Irons straightened out, Driver straight also. Does not feel like I need to squeeze the grips. If that performance continues, this is a big improvement.
Thanks for this video. I've always thought of myself as having tiny hands. I wear an ML though and have chronic tendonitis in my outer left wrist along with some carpal tunnel symptoms. The original wrist injury where I hit a tree root in some long rough, kept me away from golf for more than three years. Then I had another accident after that with a broken hand and torn ACL which extended that for a couple of years more. I was scratch before the wrist injury and playing the best golf of my life. I just started trying to play again. It seems the more I try to practice and play, the more that wrist pain wants to come back to visit. It seems like it's time for me to experiment with some larger grips. I also noticed my 7 iron, which I practice the most with, has a wear spot under the left thumb.
I wear a Small Titleist Perma Soft glove but my hands measure to 8 1/4” long. I use standard size grips. Looks like I need to go to medium size. I’m going to get a full fitting in the spring for a whole new bag. Really want to come up to get fitted by you. I live in Destin, FL so you’re not too far away.
Perfectly informative video as always! I’m in between right at 7.5 inches/squeeze into a medium glove, and use a standard grip with 3 total wraps of tape to make it right in between standard and midsized. Truth be told, I don’t mind the size of a midsize grip, but I don’t like the extra rubber “squishyness” and then don’t like the 6 wraps under a standard grip. You just have to do a ton of tinkering on your own to find what’s best for you.
So my hand length according to you, I'm 8.25" but wear an xl glove. I actually just upgraded a bunch of my clubs to jumbos before I saw this because standards were making my hands sore and felt too small. I liked the way jumbo felt over the medium.
My hand measured 7.5 inch but my fingers are shorter than my palm. This is the reason they sell ML golf gloves. I personally used standard grip to the top and build up the bottom with four layers. It reduced the taper grip look and gives me a better feel. I hold the club a lot with my finger. Thanks for the video and enjoy them all.
Great video. I have been down the grip rabbit hole. Easy to do when you do your own grips. I play with a large glove and landed on the Jumbomax XL. Elbow pain went away immediately. I think all golfers in the future will transition to bigger grips.
AJ for content removing standard wedge shaft and using graphite shafts. I could never understand how people discussed feel when the shaft is so stiff. I recently tested my sons budget Texan wedges and was shocked at the feel factor difference over standard 130gram dynamic gold shafts. To hole 2 wedge shots in 18 holes is a message! So today I have pulled all the wedge shafts and fitted graphite Reg flex shafts ( spares i had on the shelf) 🤞🤞
Good video, I have tried standard grips, midsize, and jumbo grips before. My hands measure 8.25 inches and I use standard grips, midsize grips feel good, but I am not sold on them. Jumbo grips feel good as in holding something, but when it comes to swinging a golf club, I feel that both the midsized and even more on the Jumbo, that doesn't allow my hands to fully release through the swing. I will need to check my impact position again, to see if maybe I'm doing something else wrong. I also custom made my own grips that were even bigger than jumbo, but again they feel good in the hands, but not when swinging a club. I can see using this method for fitting into a putter grip, but on irons and other clubs, not to sure about that. Enjoyed the video, thank you.
I wear a small glove, and while I thought I should go undersize, when i went to a fitter, we saw that even midsize are actually better for me (by looking at how much space is between my fingers and my palm when I grip the club normally).. I was squeezing a lot, so we decided to try the mcc+4 in midsize for a while, as it caused me to squeeze much less.. By now I have stopped squeezing the club so hard, and we have now changed back to the standard z-grip on my main sets and I have to say, I prefer that now. Once I need to regrip my blades (which I use mostly for practice and some fun rounds in the summer, but not for any competition or bad-weather-play) I will also go back to standard size. I can regrip myself, so maybe I will give undersize a try sometime as well, as it's pretty easy to swap by myself.
I used standard for years, but then picked up a few clubs recently that has midsize grips and I loved the feel and I've ordered a new set of clubs with midsize. But for me, it's my swing that really needs changing 🤣
This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. I’m 8” and play midsize +4 with 2 wraps. My miss is always left. I wanted to play jumbo, but thought they will feel heavy and too big.
Give a jumbo a try and see what happens. Also be aware that brands like Winn and Jumbomax offer lighter weight versions of these bigger sizes if you're concerned about the weight of a jumbo rubber grip.
AJ great explanation of grip sizing. Did you happen to see the Bryson video with John Daly. JD makes the claim that most amateur players would benefit from larger grips. He makes the claim that they loose control of the club at the top of the swing and with larger grips they can maintain control. Was always told that people should avoid oversized grips unless that they have large hands. Exception being arthritic issues. Bryson prefers oversized grips. Dynamic testing makes sense.
I didn't exactly understand what JD was saying about there being a gap between your arm and your hand at the top. I even paused it to try to comprehend how that had anything to do with grip size lol My brain started smoking there 😂
Daly identified one problem but ignored the opportunity cost. Many players can "release" or "turn over" with smaller grips. That said, the loss of control at the top is true, also. Therefore, two things can be true at the same time, right? You have to find the lessor of two evils.
In general, ... the grips offered are way to thin and JD and Bryson both are so rigth to in general go with thicker grip. In "tug of war" the rope needs to be big enough to have grip. In tennis the forces and the head of the racket needs to be under control and still be soft. In baseball there are a lot of forces and the ball end is not without reason so big. Anyone coming from any sport where equipment in the hands plays a role will say and ask why the golf grips are so (and thus too) thin.
Bryson is the exception, not the rule. He bases much of his swing and equipment from the Moe Norman, Natural Golf type swing. Nothing wrong with that but I think the really big grips work better with that sort of setup. The fact that almost every other top player on every major tour plays with a more traditional grip, even the youngest players, should tell you something.
@EFGMC wow ... setup has nothing to do with what size fits one best. The fact that there is still only a small percentage of top players and youngsters using thicker grips is proving my point. Why are they using that ... because from their trainer and the industry they are not thinking for themselves and just follow what is said. Just like the use of the white ball. This whilst the human retina can see the contrast of a yellow ball much better. Tennis switched in the 80's as on tv it was so apparent. The golf culture is very 'stick to what you know' and the industry is milking it to the fullest. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
GP TV +4 2- 5" wraps under left hand 1- wrap under right hand. This is the perfect set up for me. Experiment with one club to get the right size before you grip your entire set.
My measure is 7.5 inches and I feel more comfortable and strike ball ball much better with my jumbo size grip on the driver and all my iron are mid size.. Like you said the number 6 for me it more about the feeling
My glove size is a large cadet. I have a large palm area with short fingers. I have found that a standard sized grip with +2 tape wraps is the best for me. Hand measurement is 7 3/4. I’ve tried midsized grips, but it felt a little too big and did not allow me to work the ball both ways as easily. So I really like option 6, because feel is almost always going to trump every else.
Always educational…of course I know you were speaking in generalities…I would offer a few other points on grip size…from testing I’ve done and other tests I’ve seen done that have concluded/found no discernible difference in ball flight related to grip size, I have two theories…Those who do see a change in ball flight is for one of two reasons: 1. The swing weight of the club has changed…even though that weight is predominantly in the hands, it still has an effect on your swing. A smaller grip is usually lighter and a larger grip heavier…which could account for the ball flight changes; and 2. I posit it’s not a smaller grip or larger grip that is the main cause of being able to turn your hands over or not but rather how hard you are gripping the club. If you have a choke hold on the club, you will have a restricted rotation, regardless of grip size. Grip size doesn’t seem to affect me at all…I have a straight ball flight with an occasional small draw. I actually like to feel the connection between the hands and the club and will change grip sizes throughout the season from regular, plus 4, to medium sized grips…swap them out about once every other month…helps me feel more connected to the club and doesn’t affect my swing. I found grips that are all within a gram or two of each other at the different sizes.
According to your scale - at 7.6” should take a mid-size grip, BUT as a mechanic who used hardened tools regularly - my jumbos give me a better feel without feeling like I need to hold on to the club or like it will slip out of my hand.
@@metalheads-golf Maybe. Speaking only for myself I have average hands except the feel in my hands is suppressed by 40 years of working with steel tools. I have to squeeze my hands to get them to close all the way. Jumbos fit my hands well.
AJ, could you do a video/advice on how to repair feather type scuffs on woods. Never seen a club maker do this yet, unless you’re going to state it’s not possible.
I couldn’t really decide what size grip I wanted so I took 3 clubs and re-gripped them with a standard mcc grip, standard mcc +4 grip and a midsize mcc +4 grip. Then I went to the range and used the three clubs to figure out which one I felt the most comfortable with. It ended up being the standard MCC +4 grips.
Good information...thanks. More questions...Do you ever swingweight putters? And does it matter? I recently put a player in a 15 gram heavier driver shaft, same clubhead speed but picked up 2.5 mph in ball speed. Your input is appreciated.
Sometimes. I am about to do a video where I demo a putter weighting system. I think putter weight is maybe most important when talking about green speed. Slower greens = heavier putter.
I watched a video where Ian Poulter explains how he uses extra tape to reduce taper on his grips … as he prefers a firm rubber grip rather than thicker rubber grip -“ - thinking of trying a similar process… But what I’m really curious about to grip length! I know Ping does their wedge grips longer, is there other grips manufacturers out there making a longer grip?
Great video! I have a question. I had a few lessons last year that really improved my game, but I was still getting a lot of erratic shots, especially with irons. Some left, some right, some right down the center. A couple months ago I decided to try midsize grips (Golf Pride Tour Velvet). I started playing the best I every have and my irons and even my driver became much more accurate and consistent. After about 8-10 round with the midsize grips, I started getting elbow pain on the outside of my lead elbow. I was doing stretches and exercises that would make it feel better until my next round of golf. I also noticed I started getting a lot of wear on the meaty part on the outside of my palm on my glove, which I'd never had with standard grips. So I decided to go back to standard size grips. I played a round with very little elbow pain, but my shots with irons went to back to being erratic, shooting left, right, or straight. So my question is what do I do now? As far as the measurements that I'm finding online, including the ones in this video, both by hand and finger measurements and glove size, I should be playing midsize grips. I also want to add that I'm 49, and play Ping G400 irons with regular flex graphite shafts.
What grip were you using in standard size, tour velvet again? This is an interesting question. Without watching you hit balls to see if something is changing in how you strike the ball I will be guessing here. You might try something like a Winn Grip in midsize. The midsize Winns run on the smaller size and the construction is softer than a tour velvet. That might be a reasonable compromise. Maybe just try it on a couple clubs to start.
@@EFGMC I was using some Champkey grips from Amazon. However, yesterday I decided to measure the grips with my calipers and found that the outer diameter of the Champkey grips, 2" down from the butt end, was only .876". Which from charts I'm seeing online is more the diameter for undersize grips. I'm seeing that standard girps should measure about .900. So I built up the shafts with some extra tape to get to about .910" and will try that. I have my grips installed with air which is why it's so easy to switch. Thank you for the tip on the Winn grips. I had a Winn installed on my driver several years ago I did really like the feel of it.
8" measurement - std grip with a 2 way miss - the timing of this video is uncanny as I've been diving down this rabbit hole again and going to upsize my grips
AJ, good advice, but what about wrapping your hand around grips and seeing where your fingers touch your palm. Isn’t this the best way to get the correct grip size? After all, aren’t grip manufacturers sizes slightly different? Cheers.
That used to be my preferred method but then I realized there are too many golfers using something other than a Vardon style traditional grip so that method gets tricky.
Thanks for your very good explanations and debunking all the snake oil on gold clubs. What I was wondering recently are shaft length for women's. All the girls on the LPGA have the same driver length, for Nelly Corda it looks right but the smaller players th grip goes up to the chin sometimes. It looks so weird. At the Olympics even the winner is gripping their iron's regularly an inch shorter. What is it about, fitting women's clubs, is it different?
It's not, it's just how they hold the club and what they feel comfortable with. I would guess it comes from learning the game with longer clubs and then just getting used to that sensation.
I wear a 2x glove .measure nine inch .construction hands... been hooking to the left like crazy with irons and hybrids which are mid size gripped . Driver n woods are jumbo and feel better n hook less.... hmmmm whats should i do lol
Hi Adam, Thank you for the great video and all the other great videos you post. In terms of grip size, depending on grip brand and layers of tape, what is the general "circumference" of a standard grip, and is it with only one layer of tape? Is a grip the same size, or does it vary depending on the thickness of the grip? If you cut a grip, is the diameter the same as that of a Lamkin grip vs Golf Pride grip if you measure it in the same place?........ Perhaps grips vary and should be defined by diameter in inches/cm, like shaft flex. S flex in one shaft is not similar to s flex in another shaft.
The "official" way to measure grip diameter is 2 inches down from the butt cap of the grip. A standard size grip with an inner diameter of .600 on a .600 shaft should result in a .900 inch standard grip size. Not all brands are the same as you mentioned although the big name brands are usually pretty standardized.
How accurate is the method of gripping the club and observing fingers on top hand digging in or not touching palm. Also do the new plus 4 style grips need any consideration (these usually only affect the lower hand)? Thanks.
My hand fits good in a large but my fingers are a tad too long so I tried an XL but it was too loose around the hand itself so I have to cinch it down. Would you recommend jumbo/oversized grips? I’ve held jumbo/oversized grips and midsized felt pretty good and I love the oversized but I don’t know how they’d play…thoughts?
You would have to experiment. Soft grip might move around a little causing stress on the hands when compensating. A thicker grip will reduce your pain because you have slightly more leverage in terms of the twisting torques
You can add weight to the head if you are trying to return to a specific swing weight value however the swing weight is really about ensuring consistency across the set. So assuming you are using the same size grip throughout the bag, the balance should remain similar assuming it was to begin with.
I’m about an 8.75” and XXL glove. I currently have tour velvet midsize. I feel like I could go up a size but all the jumbo grips weigh 13-25g more than my current ones. Won’t that affect swing weight? Maybe not enough to notice? Is adding tape a lesser weight option? I feel like I really need more wraps on the bottom hand with my irons since I tend to overdraw.
They will move the balance up the shaft more but nothing says that would be a bad thing. Would need to try it. You can also look into a lighter weight jumbo from Winn or Jumbomax if you want to keep the weight down. I've done a couple recent videos on tape buildup and my takeaway is you are better off going with the bigger size grip. Tape is very inefficient.
@@EFGMC Thanks! Possibly stupid question: can you interlock your grip with jumbomax? The specs look really big to me. I don’t see circumference specs for Golf Pride. Do I just measure my midsize tour velvets and add 3/16 at each point to get jumbo? I guess my question about tape was because golf pride tour velvets come in jumbo but tour velvets plus-4 only come in midsize, so I’d need to add tape to one of them to get a jumbo tour velvet plus-4. Sounds like regular tour velvet adding plus 4 tapes on the bottom hand is the least “tape inefficient” since it would use less than half the tape and only stretch the bottom?
I’m at 8’ and have midsize grips but I have the marks you talk about on my grips. So do I need to take jump grip? I think I will lose some club speed with jumbo grip.
Stick a jumbo on your driver, favourite iron and favourite wedge and give it a go. Only way to tell. And yeah you can use a bike pump to install them so you don't wast grips
If you are talking about old tape inside a grip, fill the grip up with solvent after plugging the vent hole. Let it sit for 5 minutes or so then use a metal rod of some type to peal off the tape inside.
just switch to midsize, which is 7 grams heavier than my previous grip, does it effect the swing weight? I been hitting shanks...that doesnt normally happen....
I love you channel and you channel. How ever ... your statement around that feel is in the end the guide I do agree. How ever ... in general grips in golf are due to evolution of epuipement and culture to thin. Biomechanics should always prevail and with that the normal and even mid should never be sold anymore. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
glove size does not tell you anything.. I do not like gloves that fit like a 2nd skin, my hand size is 7.5 inch and I wear small or medium gloves depending on the real feel size. with my 7.5 inch I like midsize grips but sometimes the but end of the shaft is thicker and in this case the midsize is to much and I step down to standard and 2-3 build tapes
That was my last point in the video. Everything else can help you decide if a different size is worth exploring but if it doesn't feel right and perform then it's not right for you.
My hand is a standard size, but I prefer the feel of a midsize grip. I ended up going with a GolfPride MCC+4. I really like that size.

Sometimes. I am about to do a video where I demo a putter weighting system. I think putter weight is maybe most important when talking about green speed. Slower greens = heavier putter.
I watched a video where Ian Poulter explains how he uses extra tape to reduce taper on his grips … as he prefers a firm rubber grip rather than thicker rubber grip -“ - thinking of trying a similar process…
But what I’m really curious about to grip length!
I know Ping does their wedge grips longer, is there other grips manufacturers out there making a longer grip?
I personally run midsize with 3+1 tape. Reduces the taper and they feel great
Great video!
That sounds filthy
Hi AJ. Have you ever done experiments doing one length in woods.?
I haven't. Are you thinking make everything 5w length?
I’m at 7 1/2 and play Winn Dri-Tac Standard, been wondering if going up 1 grip size would give me less face rotation/more stability
I wear a 2x glove .measure nine inch .construction hands... been hooking to the left like crazy with irons and hybrids which are mid size gripped . Driver n woods are jumbo and feel better n hook less.... hmmmm whats should i do lol
Sounds like some Jumbomax in your future.
@@EFGMC thankyou. Just ordered them !!
@@EFGMC Thank you very much for the answer - much appreciated.
How accurate is the method of gripping the club and observing fingers on top hand digging in or not touching palm. Also do the new plus 4 style grips need any consideration (these usually only affect the lower hand)? Thanks.
You can use that grip method but it requires you have a traditional Vardon grip. Plus4 is supposed to quick the lower hand.
I think you would probably like oversize. I might just get a couple and throw them on a couple irons and see what you think.
My hand is 9 1/2 inches and I wear a 3xl glove should I put wraps under the jumbo grips on my Irons too?
In your case you might have to to get something more comfortable or look into the JumboMax lineup.
@@EFGMC thanks, I played today and that was on my mind lol and i looked and I have midsize on my irons, the don't feel right!
I would to know if a softer grip is better for someone with hand pains. Thanks
Yes, should reduce more vibration.
You would have to experiment. Soft grip might move around a little causing stress on the hands when compensating.
A thicker grip will reduce your pain because you have slightly more leverage in terms of the twisting torques
I’m between midsize and Jumbo. Midsize feels too small and Jumbo feels too big. Ugh. lol.
I am a natural fader/slicer. If I put on Jumbomax Lite grips on because of the heavier swing weight would that promote more of a straight/draw shot?
What is on there now?

Does grip size impact swing speed?
How do you manage swing weight with the different sizes of grips?
You can add weight to the head if you are trying to return to a specific swing weight value however the swing weight is really about ensuring consistency across the set. So assuming you are using the same size grip throughout the bag, the balance should remain similar assuming it was to begin with.
Do you think it’s possible to adjust a forged iron to 70 degrees upright?
Depends where it's starting from.
@@CharlesFromage Try it. You will likely find that you need more layers of tape than your initial guess.
Sounds like it's worth the experiment to see how you respond to the jumbo.
Thx for the answer, i’ll try :).
What is the best way to remove old tape from an old grip?
If you are talking about old tape inside a grip, fill the grip up with solvent after plugging the vent hole. Let it sit for 5 minutes or so then use a metal rod of some type to peal off the tape inside.
just switch to midsize, which is 7 grams heavier than my previous grip, does it effect the swing weight? I been hitting shanks...that doesnt normally happen....
7 grams will only change SW 1.5 points, not usually enough to change results. Size may just take a bit of time to get used to.
Could do, or a average between driver and 5 wood
What about oversize or oversize plus? This isnt the same as jumbo right?
You need to look at the actual measurement from the manufacturer as they don't have any standards. They may or may not be the same final size.
My measurement is 7" but I wear a cadet small glove. I have square hands but short fingers. What size is best?
I'd probably go with standard but might try stretching a standard grip down an extra 3/4 inch just as an experiment in feel.
How many layers of tape under a standard grip would make it midsized?
He has a couple videos addressing this and basically debunking that notion.
No matter a grip it deals with grip pressure which happens to make a small grip push more and larger grip draw more due to overcompensating…
Heavier oversize grips turns out to work for me.
Is there a way to test a larger grip size without actually regripping?
Shouldn’t your judge of grip size be what feels most comfortable to you and provides good control results.
That was my last point in the video. Everything else can help you decide if a different size is worth exploring but if it doesn't feel right and perform then it's not right for you.
