Great review and info, many thanks. Just wondered if you could make another tutorial on how to use the manual rings - zoom, focus and iris for shallow depth of field.

Thank you for the overview.... I was considering the PXW-X70 for its bit rate and its ability to be upgraded to 4K. However, apparently the upgrade to 4K only allows for 60mbps which really is unacceptable and not worth the $500. So I have starting looking at the HXR NX100. (and other cameras like the DVX200) The ergonomics seem better than the X70, the 3 lens rings are a nice feature, but why no 4K? I am sort of confused. Cameras that cost much less than this shoot 4K. Not having 4K on a 2015 release camcorder may be a deal breaker for me and I would assume many other people as well. Do you know if they plan to release a 4K update in the future? Cheers, Greg
+Greg Allen Hi Greg. Thanks for writing some lines here. Bear in mind that the codec you can find in both models (X70 and NX100), despite both belonging to XAVC family, are a different taste: MP4 420 8-bit on NX100 (XAVC-S) vs MXF 422 10-bit on X70 (XAVC Long GOP). Also, X70 is 4K-upgradeable, as you mentioned, and has some Wi-Fi/cabled operations (FTP, streaming, camera control). On the other hand, body is more "traditional" on NX100, and lens is an evolution of that of X70. Respect to your comment that some cheaper cameras can record 4K, you are right: even my Xperia Z5, or an Action Cam can do it. Also more expensive ENG camcorders (like PXW-X400) cannot shoot 4K; it depends on the needs. But Japan considered that for the customer that might be interested in this model (NX100) rather than others probably 4K is not the main priority. Also, let me tell that we haven't been told about any 4K upgrade by our headquarters. Also, nothing about bigger bitrate on X70. Best regards, Greg, and thank you very much indeed for your comment :)
Thanks for Your videos, you are very Professional. for documentary, alone, with out crew, but at the same time, i need to be indiscrete, what is the Best camcorder?? Pxw-70 or nx100?? Thanks
Thanks for the review!! How does this model compare to NX5/NX3?? Also, whats going on on low light situations, due to the many megapixels that this camera sensor has?
+John Pappas Hi John. Very good question, as these days some people use to say that "bigger sensor works better with light", to which I'd add "depending on the resolution". In fact, that is something I use to insist a lot on in my presentations: don't only think of the sensor size, but on the PIXEL size. And in the beginning, I was sincerely worried about this sensor. Yes, it's much bigger than a 1/2" or 1/3", but the resolution is also much bigger. So, my first test with a X70 (same 1" sensor) was to leave a room totally dark, open the door with regular light on the corridor, leave the camera in auto mode... and it was really suprising: despite -obviously- gain was crazy (as far as I remember, about 33dB), it was working much better than expected. As you can imagine, there was noise, but it was not an "ugly" feeling, and was lower than I expected when I saw the sensor resolution specification. And compared to NX3/NX5, in fact it is practically the same body, but now with a more evolved codec (XAVC-S in NX100, XAVC Long GOP in X70), and, of course, different sensor. There are other "details" like SDI output, compatibility with HXR-FMU128, etc, but there are more significant between NX5 and NX3. Oh, and while NX3 has WiFi functions, NX100 doesn't have those features. Best regards, John, and thanks for your questions and comments.
Great review! Are you familiar much with the Panasonic AC130? If so, how do you think these two compare? I have the Panasonic right now as my 2nd cam (my C100 Mark II is my main cam). I'm considering selling the Panasonic. I should be able to get about as much for it as this Sony sells for new. So then later on, whether it's a month from now or 7 months from now, I have this Sony available for me to purchase if and when I need an ENG style camera again. With the 1" sensor, I have to think that the picture quality is going to be better than the Panasonic and its 1/3" sensor.
+Brandon Thompson Hi Brandon. To be honest, I am not experienced with AC130 (even if I were, it would be unfair from me to give an opinion, since I work for Sony). What I'd strongly recommend is that you try to speak to your official dealer, because they will probably have some NX100 demo unit, and test by yourself. Meanwhile, if you are wondering about the sensor, bear in mind that the equivalent to NX100 with 1/3 sensor (triple chip) would be our HXR-NX3. NX100 is aimed to those videographers that want to combine a typical "handy ENG" job with some aesthetical look, because having a bigger sensor -you'll know that with your C100's Super35- makes DoF shallower. Also, if you are working in that environment, maybe you could at least take a look on PXW-FS5... just for knowledge, or in case you re-think about the cameras you use ;) Best regards, Brandon, and thanks for dropping some lines.
Hello Mr. Alvaro Ortiz,Can you make a low light test comparation between SONY HXR-NX100 and SONY PXW-X180 ?If you can't do the test, can you tell me if SONY HXR-NX100 is better than SONY PXW-X70 in low light ?Thank you.
+jeffmara Hi Jeff. Sorry, but what cameras are you referring to? From my humble point of view, if I need to compare any video camera to a DSLR, I'd recommend to do it with a PXW-FS5, due to its Super35 mm sensor (same sensor size as in classic cinema), interchangeable lenses and form factor (mainly weight). The rest are all advantages in FS5 (I insist: under my POV). Best regards.
hallo my friend. I already have the panasonic hc-x1000e (4k) but after a 5 months use I can say that it makes much noise in the picture, even at the afternoon sometimes! are you satisfyied with sony nx100 in low light situations? I intend to sold my panasonic, so I want your opinion if it is worht its money (sony nx100)
+SuperRtrtrtr Well... from my point of view, they are different camcorders. NX3 has a triple sensor that provides a video/"ENG" - looking picture, while NX100 can provide a more beautiful "bokeh" effect, despite you can also reach the video looking by playing with light (iris) and/or focal distances. They are, simply, different solutions in almost the same body :) Best regards, SuperRtrtrtr
Hi! Well, actually, I would dare to say that weddings is one of the main markets that NX100 is aimed to. It's a typical situation to migrate from DSLRs into pro camcorders, and one of the main lack within that "update" is that sensor uses (used) to be significantly smaller in a camcorder, providing a "video-looking" picture rather than a cinematographic one. However, since some years ago, such need of a larger sensor in professional camcorders has been detected, and that's why tools like NEX-FS100, FS700, FS5 (Super35 mm), NEX-EA50 (Sony's APS-C) or now with the 1" sensor (HXR-NX100, PXW-X70, Z150) have shown up, in order to offer a bokeh effect in a natural way. So, to sum up, my reply is "YES"; it can be a perfect mate for weddings and events. Best regards, 999millenium
to 999millenium I would say an excellent wedding video camera. I just wish someone would answer me in how to change file names then I would use it above my pmw200 camera

can the lens hood be removed from the camera? If i purchase this, I think I would replace the lens hood with a hood that has a flip cover.

I have tested my unit before replying, and yes, it is detachable.

What kind of cable should I use? Not BNC? can you link?

It would be a HDMI cable. Bear in mind that at 50p you may need a "high speed" HDMI cable.
