My stomach turned when I first learned he was cast. Then, he made a complete believer out of me. No one could have done it better.
I never think of Ross Geller at all when I see Schwimmer playing Capt. Sobel. He's a great actor. Fantastic job.
You just bring it up so you did 😹
Yes, and thats pretty amazing to manage.
Actually, I think if a guy like Ross was placed into a situation like Sobel, you'd get Sobel. He nailed both characters!
It took me several episodes to realize that Nixon was the guy from office space.
he threw his career to the wind by playing such an unsympathetic character following Friends ... must have been a gut-wrenching move and i'm incredibly proud of him for his courage. following a huge success like Friends, you HAVE to be wondering to yourself - maybe even questioned by critics - am i a true, world-class actor? he answered beautifully. nothing but respect.
I thought they had said he was in his 8th season of friends. He did an amazing job. He's such a jerk. Lol but he was given a lot of credit for Easy being so a good company.
Davvid Schwimmer was absolutely brilliant in his portrayal of Herbert Sobal. I hated and dispised him by the end of the series. My hat his off to you David and thank you. And hats off to the casting director as well.
David Schwimmer did a fantastic job in this role and showed what a strong actor his is.
Very underrated and talented actor...Outstanding job, David...Thank you for your contribution to honoring America's finest.
Schwimmer as Sobel was without a doubt one of the best performances of BOB.
Bravo. He nailed that role. This was his masterpiece. The way he was such a bad ass in training and then got shit for being a crap leader in the mock battles. I loved it. He made the first part of Band of Brothers as good as it was.
Its not hard to train Soldiers, a training officer has all the authority and faciliites at hand, sure he has to be tough and unrelenting but he has to be FAIR and balanced with Men under his command. Sobel was neither.
He played that part to perfection.
I think David Schwimmer is a fantastic actor. He WAS Sobel, and the incredible thing is, he was still playing Ross on Friends at the time. Only great actors can make you believe each character, no matter how iconic they are. I would love to meet him at an actors reunion.
Late to the party but, in line with with so many comments below, I think David did a masterful job fleshing out this role. He really made you despise Sobel at first and then you see, beneath the surface. he actually is trying as best he can to train these men for what is to come. It's just his strength isn't in 'combat' command. As an instructor he is top flight and the sadness is that that isn't what he (Sobel) wants to be :(.
Agreed 👍
Sobel was a petulant little dictator, Winters said that he was worst than portrayed. But David did a great job.
David Schwimmer was fantastic as Sobel. Not only did he bring out the cruel, nasty side of Sobel. But also the sad vulnerable side of Sobel . Even though the men hated him at the time, alot of the men credited his harsh training as why they survived.
Sadly Sobel never reconciled his dismissal as leader of E company.
According to Army records Capt. Herbert Sobel actually jumped into Normandy on June 6 and is credited along with 3 other men with knocking out a German machine gun position. He may have been hated by his men but the man assured most of them through his vigorous training and disipline that they had a shot at surviving the war. On top of that, the man did not lack courage under fire. He stayed in France as long as the 506th did and only came out after they were back in England.
David was the perfect choice to play this man and nobody could've done it better.
Schwimmer was absolutely amazing as Cpt Sobel!
David was outstanding in BoB. Playing Sobel was the hardest role, and his portrayal really hit the spot. I had only saw "Friends" commercials, so I wasn't as influenced by his TV persona.
He nailed this part, excellent job David
Sobel was the best part he ever did. Great performance
It takes a very good actor to make a viewer love or hate a character. Never watched a full episode of Friends, so I could totally believe in his take on Sobol.
What was left out of "Band of Brothers" was that Sobel did parachute into Normandy on D Day and was involved in combat operations including taking out some German guns.
Fascinating listening to how David Schwimmer took on this role.
If you read the book, Schwimmer's portrayal of Sobel was right on. Ross disappeared within moments Sobel showing up on screen.
I read Ambrose's books. You're right. David Schwimmer did a really great job of portraying Sobel. Sobel was a sunofabitch. But he understood the urgency of preparing the men for the brutality of combat. I hope this acting job catapulted his career.
There were a few moments Ross was there. Especially the time he says "Hi ho Silver!" while running.
That was a wonderful interview. You gotta be a pretty darn good actor to make so many people hate you.
I never took David as a smart man but I retract those thoughts.
Band of. Brothers was greatly enhanced by the fine performance of David Schwimmer as Herbert Sobel
Playing CPT Sobol was quite a change from Ross in Friends. He was, however, very believable in the role, demonstrating his versatility and great acting talent.
Schwimmer was my favorite character in Friends. He played that role so perfectly, but as Herbert Sobel, he was brilliant.
Schwimmer really had a tough acting assignment, and I picked up on it immediately watching the series, that his assignment was really really tough.
Considering Schwimmer is a major example of type cast, he did an excellent job w this character
He played sobel really well...I understand people will only see Ross from friends,,,but he's actually a very good actor
There's no but. He proved himself an excellent actor in Friends too.👍
David Schwimmer is an incredibly talented actor and director. He is highly underrated by many who have typecast him as 'Ross'. No. Schwimmer is such a good actor that he made us believe he was Ross b/c he's such a stellar actor. 👌
Hey, they couldn't have picked a better actor for the part of Soble. Schwimmer is Soble in every way.
Sobel was a pretty tragic character - tried to commit suicide in later life but only succeeded in severing both optic nerves and blinding himself.
And then died of Malnutrition while in care of the V.A.
That could not have been easy. I'd love to give David a hug and say job well done.
Great job great actor
It's interesting to see such a typecast character in such a different role and absolutely nail it. We all think oh its Ross, he can't be taken seriously, but we all also thought the same when Malcolm in the Middles dad became Heisenberg. I thought he was brilliant, kudos David Schwimmer!
Lol Malcolm who,?
@@TermiteUSA It was a comedy series back in the early 2000s about a dysfunctional family, arguably Brian Cranstons biggest and most well known role as the dad, Hal, before he starred in Breaking Bad. The characters are polar opposites, check it out, it's a great show!
He was great in this role. Played a character that everyone hated to a tee.
Sobel was a head-case. In the 1960’s (some sources say 1970) he shot himself in the temple and succeeded in blinding himself. He spent the next 17 years in a VA hospital and died of malnutrition. His family didn’t even know he died until much later. Shows just how close his kids were to him.
His son was a Vietnam War Protestor and Sobel was an extreme anti-Communist Conservative, the son to this day thinks his father seemed to lose his family over his hard right views on politics, it even caused the breakup of his marriage and alienation from his sons, further leading to the suicide attempt. I guess his family also wasn’t prepared to reconcile with an old blind war veteran father, leading to his death from poor care in a VA hospital.
I loved the entire mini series that did a great job of honoring these WW2 soldiers.
He was great in that role. When he has to salute Major Winters towards show's end - you an see in his eyes he feels sick. Amazing performance - one of so many in that show.
I have to admit, he was good in his role as Sobel.
I knew of Schwimmer as Capt. Sobel long before I even knew he was Ross in Friends, and throughout the years I hear a lot of crap talked about him because of his Friends role, but he absolutely NAILED his performance as Sobel. I've seen a few reactions of the show on YT, and at first people are shocked because they never expected to see him in such a role, but next thing they know they completely forget him as "Ross" and start to recognize him as Sobel. I can't think of any other actor that would have played the part as well as Schwimmer did. Because of how well he did here I don't ever try to talk bad or clown Schwimmer for any other roles he may have played in his career.
He had a tough job because of typecasting, so many people thinking he is that guy from Friends. He did well, shifting to a serious and different role.
He nailed Sobel. Great job!
Credit to him, he did a great job
All the time I was in the airborne I never had a bad lt or captain. Respected all
Ditto brother.
I must be in the minority here. I first saw Friends 10 years after BOB. So for me I never saw Ross Gellar in BOB, but I did see Herb Sobel as Ross Gellar.
I now know the script to both.
I had a Jewish father who applied for the 101st with his best buddy. My dad was from Chicago. Because he wore eyeglasses, they said "What the hell are you doing over here with eyeglasses?" Get out of here. So my dad was in the Big Red One in the infantry as a marksman. His best buddy was in the 101st, they wanted to stay together. My father was busted and promoted 17 times for being Jewish. When I asked why, he said you were thrown in there with members from the KKK, people who had never worn a pair of shoes, people who had never been to school, never seen an ocean, never seen a Jew. So they picked on him and he stood up for himself. Once the shooting started, all of this "conflict stuff" went away. I thought David was much better looking than the guy he was playing. However he did a great job. I talked to Maxwell Taylor's radio man, and he told me that this Sobel guy had a real chip on his shoulder and tried to commit suicide sometime after the war. He did give them some awesome training though.
Even though he was tough and not well liked he made Easy Company the best unit in WWII and probably saved many lives. War is not about making friends it’s to function in the face of gun fire and death. You screw up or don’t fight hard enough could mean the difference between life and death.
I wonder if his career was helped or hindered by playing Sobel. I found his acting top shelf.
Gosh David is so smart
Schwimmer did a fantastic job
The real Sobel died a sad and lonely death. He may have reaped what he sowed, but there were factors involved that Schwimmer pointed out so well.
He attempted suicide in 1970 :(
So bel and his family quarreled over the Vietnam war, the breakup of his marriage and children led to the suicide attempt.
He nailed it.
Not knowing the officer he portrayed, I can't comment on the accuracy of the portrayal. I can say he did an excellent job. Herbert Sobel, the officer he portrayed later in life attempted suicide. Shooting himself in the temple he ended up blind. While living in a VA facility he died of malnutrition.
I know this is an old posting, but Band of Brothers is so tight on realism I wanted to point out Captain is abbreviated "Capt." Love the interviews
insightful .... that he read for the part with hanks must have been tough.. that sobel was an older urban jew which you wouldn't know just from the film .. and that sobel went on to earn 2 bronze stars in combat...
God Bless him
I thought Schwimmer was excellent as Sobel. Now, I never watched "Friends" so perhaps he wasn't typecast to me. He played an excellent villain however, which is fine acting.
Dye changed him. When he returned to friends, you could tell he was different actor. For the better.
3 miles up 3 miles down!! Hi ho silver!!
The Sobel character is the anchor,
after Dick Winters, around which the entire series revolves.
In Sobels case it's very subtle influence.
His a very good actor you actually hate him when playing sobel. Its the same when he played Ross his acting ability changed as the series grew .David schimmer is a fine actor.
When I hovered my mouse over the thumbnail no preview played Schwimmer just got more tanned lmao
none of us has earned the right to "bash" Sobel, we didnt know the man, we didn't train under him and we certainly cannot judge the man.
Truth. He seems to have had major flaws, but don't we all.
Tragic life though. Sad.
He’s amazing as the teacher in Apt pupil
My son got transferred to a training unit and never saw combat... we called it getting ‘Sobeled’.
Someone commented that in actuality Sobel did jump into Normandy on D Day and was in combat
Regarding Schwimmer saying that as his character he always told himself to think they thought of him as "urban older jew". I think he may have been overthinking things or projecting his own experiences, because as a now old U.S. Marine vet. who grew up in the south in the 60's, I can assure you most rural southerners never even met a jew much less had any preconceived prejudices.
He was great!
So great, that the price of fragmentation grenades.
Went way up!
I actually didn't make it past episode 1 for many years because Sobel pissed me off so bad.
Wish I could find the rest of this interview. Seems only the 1st segment is on youtube...same with Damien Lewis' interview...
David was great as Sobel.I like spaghetti.
The physical resemblance between Schwimmer and Sobel is pretty striking; I can understand why they chose him.
I thought he did great job with the role. If you ask me there were only a couple of moments where Ross Gellar might have slipped into the character a little; I'm thinking primarily of the comedic moment when George Luz is impersonating Col. Sink from behind the bush - yelling at him to cut the barbed wire fence of a local dairy farmer. But it was an ideal anecdote for it to be used in; it kind of addressed that 800lb gorilla of an issue pretty tastefully. To not utilize Schwimmer for at least one or two comedic moments like that would have been a complete waste of talent. He's a very good dramatic actor, for sure. But he's really talented when it comes to comedy.
edit: Lutz is impersonating Major Horton, who is in France at the time.
It’s a real shame he got portrayed in the movie as a failure as an officer any man who fought in WW2 is a hero!
He played the most hated man who just happened to be the man that made the men of easy company the men they were.
Where are the other 2 parts?
i was surprised at the first time i saw david in the series, and could not stand my laugh--his frieds series makes me---us, i guess---so familiar------that's why i could not 'hate' capt sobel---he just did what he should did at the bootcamp---in fact, the easy company become the best company---no pain no gain ...
how do we listen to the rest? neither link works and its not showing up in a podcasting app
hopefully the other interviews and the rest of this one are archived somewhere.
Prestige Worldwide..wide..wide..
David really made us HATE the Captain in this series. Just incredible acting….what a performance….wow!
Any really good actor can do that. "Ross", everybody hated to love him. "Capt.Sobel", everybody loved to hate him. Pretty good resume' for any actor.
Where are the rest of the parts? They are all private? Wtf?
Thank You to cpt.Sobel!! The battered bastards of Bastongne couldnt have been that if it werent for his training!!!
Cpt. Sobel's contribution to Easy Company is remembered primarily as the inventor of the "huge loser", to this day the 101st Airbourne selects the nearest hobo and surgically reconfigures them to physically reassemble Herbert Sobel before hunting them for sport while chanting, "SoooOOOobel..."
Legend has it, the ugly ghost of Cpt. Sobel still seeks its first friend.
Thats funny
The problem I have with his interview is that as far as I know, the men under Sobel didn't know he was Jewish and so why would he have this kind of resentment against his men because he was a Jew when he knew we were fighting Nazism? It doesn't make sense unless he was paranoid.
I served 21 years in the US Marine Corps. I commanded 5 different platoons and 3 different companies. My platoons and companies had all sorts of races and some tensions. I had blacks, Jews, Christians, Native Americans, a Haitian who believed his parents put a curse on him, I had a Brit formal Royal Commando, and I had Hispanics and Asians.
You know what? In combat we all got along because my life depended on my Marines and my Marines depended on the Marines to their left and right and me.
The problems began the few times that we were pulled back to the battalion headquarters for 3 days for "rest". In reality that was when the tension between the deafferent races, ethnicities, and cultures became evident. As long as we were in combat, everything was OK but when we got back to the rear for 3 days, it was different.
What I learned from that was when people of all races, cultures, and ethnicities have a common goal, we can work effectively together.
But when the common goal of survival is eliminated from the equation, we are at war with each other and the problems in society worsen.
Your intro music is too long
I thought Schwimmer did an excellent acting performance and recreated Sobel's character on the spot.
6:21 He says the guys are volunteers and have no military training what so ever. That's not true they had military training. They all had went through boot camp, and some of them were all ready NCO's when they got there.
Wrong this was a new type of training school where the enlisted men all did boot camp together, only the Officers had had previous training.
He had to learn all that the others did, and more.... Perfect view of what officers THINK. No wonder he nailed the part. Delusional. 😉
Typical EM response. Chip on shoulder and no idea of what the job of an Officer entails!!! talk about Delusions!!!
Who tf is Ross??? This dude is CPT Sobel to me
I thought D. Schwimmer did a fine job as Sobel. Sobel must have been a very complicated character in the real life.
Mr Schwimmer's portrayal of Capt Sobel was pretty amazing on the other hand I don't find anything outstanding about any role played by Mr. Hanks. To me he's always Tom Hanks no matter the character or the conditions of the play, I'm not saying he's a bad actor but what I am saying is that he's a character actor and nothing more.
With respect to almost all of you who think that was great casting, I disagree. I almost quit watching the series, because there’s “Ross”, a character who annoyed me, from an annoying show (yes, LOTS of people felt that way) right there in EPISODE ONE of BoB. He was already type-cast. “Ross” was all we knew of this actor. It was like casting Ah-nold to play Sigmund Freud. Fortunately I was warned before hand to just “wait Ross out” and that “he wouldn’t be there long” - I STILL almost quit one of the best mini-series ever made.
PS- I was a Seinfeld guy. Peace.
Same here, I didn’t watch it for almost 20 years until now. I watched The Pacific again and again, I thought it was superior in every way..My jury is still out on this one. I need to watch B.o.B more and more to decide.
Weekend pass revoked!
It’s a real shame the series portrayed him as a failure being an officer, any man or woman who gave there service is a hero
He got off easy in the series compared to how he was in real life. He was good as a training officer because anybody can yell and scream, but he was totally incompetent in terms of leadership and being a tactician. Which is why he was transferred to a training unit before the invasion.
such a good actor he made me hate him
You PEOPLE are in the position, of ATTENTION!!!
I was thinking that through the whole interview.
late to the party - David Schwimmer did an excellent job! That just shows you not to typecast actors! Secondly- Captain Sobel was kind of miss understood. I have read a lot of books by the Band of Brothers- I cannot remember which person said this but they attributed Sobel for helping them get though. Look at it - If you read the book : The Band of Brothers - when the troopers left Toccoa, Georgia they went for more training at Fort Benning. The troopers from Toccoa were so well trained and in such great shape they were able to skip a lot of training and out ran any of the trainers at Benning. Think of it - the troopers had someone to hate - unfortunately it was Sobel- later when Sobel got transferred he jumped into Normandy and earned a Combat Infantry Badge which to me is not a small feat and shows Sobel was not a chicken!
Sobel got a bad wrap.
How so?!?
@@greggmotley8113 I think they probably over did it in his potrayal. Winters credited him with the training that made them effective.
@@SanitysVoid Perhaps. My parents made me into an outstanding student who was extremely unhappy, which made it difficult to productively apply all that I had learned. Without Winters to hold the team together, they may have devolved into rebellion and chaos. As in all historical accounts, one never knows for sure.
You have never served in the military or too young to understand "hard training" and how the instructor or in this case your parents instilled it upon you. Very run on sentence, but don't make excuses. Enjoy the progress you've made.
@@greggmotley8113
I love the series, but if you watch carefully, very rarely is anything negative said about the soldiers who survived and were interviewed for the series. The ones who did not survive are portrayed much more negatively. Just look at Blithe, who was portrayed as an ineffective soldier (and possibly a coward), when in reality he was a career soldier and silver star recipient who served not just in WW2, but also in Korea. Not only was the portrayal likely skewed, the producers couldn't even get the details of his death correct. If Blithe had been around when the film was produced, you'd not have had an episode like the one that emerged. This is history with the benefit of first hand witnesses, but it also carries their biases.
David did a great job - and sometimes he must have been really squeamish about coming of his popular character in "Friends" and then into a role in BB which is unflattering. Going from a well respected and friendly 'geekish guy' to being someone who was out of his depth and unliked... not easy.
I disliked his character, but he did it excellently.
His his character in the series was surprising and for a person like me coming from a different perspective than most people, it made the character that much more awesome in the show.
And played by pretty much the only person to play it.
You see I hate Friends, I hate that goddamn show so much. I think it's unfunny and one of the most stupidest shows ever.
I don't care if it was popular.
So when David Schwimmer showed up in Band of Brothers, I was like "NOT THIS FUCKING GUY!".
Then about 10 mins later it hit me, amd I thought it was perfect casting.
