To be honest the second he started laughing I thought "oh god this is another one of those instances where they turn the stoic and cool character into some sort of deranged clown" but.... it... it worked? 15:13 absolutely loving this looney tunes fall where he floats in the air for a couple seconds, denying gravity, comedically looking left and right, processing what happened, then finally falling. It’s so out of place
This fight is clearly a lowkey love letter to DMC but especially the 3rd one and the Dante vs Virgil fight on top of the demon tower. In fact the whole tower part of the game is a reference to DMC3. 💯
I think people underestimate Odin’s role here, which is why folks are disappointed about the lack of Eikon fighting. Odin was likely the first or one of the few who actually knew Ultima by name, and so he is here to give the player a more personal look into why he serves Ultima, as a way of giving us greater understanding of Ultima when we finally face him. Don’t get me wrong though, an Eikon fight would’ve been sweet but character insight trumped it here
I love how this boss fight was different from the rest. The rest were all Kaiju battles with tons of destruction focusing on Eikon vs Eikon, while this fight's focus wasn't Ifrit vs Odin, but instead Clive vs Barnabas both sides fighting for what they believe is right.
I like how when that happened he doesn't get angry but rather overjoyed since he admits he never had an opponent so strong and powerful before and since his Dominant is named after a God of War (who's fated to die in battle) it makes sense that he would revel against a worthy opponent after years of easily defeating anyone he comes across. My guess he thought Bahamut was his rival but once Ultima revealed to him about Clive/Mythos he decided that he would be a more worthy adversary
I was playing the entire Eikon battle and watching the cutscenes WAITING for Odin/Barnabas to use Zantetsuken, and when it was us/Ifrit who got to use it, my jaw literally dropped. It was so cool.
Actually he does one shot Clive if you don’t go through the purple bar fast enough. It’s the only attack in the game ultima actually tries to stop someone from doing with “quieting”. That’s a scary thought.
You can really hear the Malos coming out in David Mencken’s voice. This is the type of shit I’ve been looking for all game whenever Barnabas has been on screen. Tbf tho this is really the only moment throughout the entire game when he actually went all out
Dante: Give it to me Vergil! Vergil: If you want it, you'll have to take it from me. Clive: I don't want it! Barnabas: I'll give it to you whether you want it or not.
I love the exchange starting at 9:10, ifrit is strong enough to one shot eikons at this point and Barnabas pays it back fully. Even crazier when you realize Clive’s basically been fighting an army gauntlet before and after this fight the same way Barnabas was when he established waloed.
That’s exactly what I thought! I was hoping we were gonna be fighting eachother around the castle structure while his horse is galloping. Then after killing the horse, ifrit & odin duke it out one on one like Kaiju versions of Dante & Vergil!!!
Idk, I honestly thought the more personal fight was great. The other Eikon fights happened as a result of the Dominants losing control in some way, but Barnabus had complete mastery his Eikon. While I do wish Odin was given more love (him splitting the ocean was fucking sick), I love what we got here: a huge Vergil homage and a proper rival battle
Barnabas being the hardest main story boss in the game (in my opinion), on top of having a really cool just 1v1 fight was fun. this is the only fight in the game where i had to use almost all my potions, hes definitely a challenging boss, and i am a bit disappointed there wasnt an Eikon fight, but the whole fight is so well done, especially the final phase, with the music and Barnabas' whole mini-speech before the final phase. its so good
