And on a first ballot!!!!! Not because I’m a Phillies fan through and through, but because, he’s deserved to be inducted, while he was still alive. He himself said he was controversial, the Chicago White Sox weren’t concerned with that one bit, they were aware of what he was capable of doing offensively and defensively.
As a lifelong Philly fan, thank you for the comment on Richie. Some of the balls that Richie launched over the left field roof at Connie Mack are still traveling, similar to the Voyager spacecrafts. And thanks for the loan of Pete Rose for 5 years. He was instrumental in the Phillies winning their first World Series in 1980.
Due to racism issues at the time in Philly, he was basically chased out of town. I remember him writing BOO in the dirt at first base where he was playing at the time. I saw him hit one off the billboard sign on the roof of Connie Mack.
According to Jim Bouton's infamously timeless read Ball Four, the Astros came fairly close to acquiring Allen from the Phillies in 1969. What a lineup that would've been: Joe Morgan, Norm Miller, Jimmy Wynn, Bob Watson, Dick Allen, Doug Rader. Imagine if the Clendenon trade had gone through and they had gotten him for someone other than Staub. Astros '69 pennant winners?
There wasn't a black person in Philadelphian's mind that was a decent person back then. THEY had to tolerate black NFL & NBA players. I'm from Boston and some say we weren't much better.
How do you put Edgar Martinez in hall but not Allen? As pointed out Richie's OPS + was tied with Mays and Frank Thomas- this was clearly higher than Edgar 157 to 147.Allen better hitter , way better baserunner than Edgar and (maybe by default )more defensive value. I am not saying Allen was a good fielder but he was slightly better in fielding range than avg 3rd baseman one or 2 years, and Edgar was dh(mostly) meaning virtually no defensive value. If you say Edgar played longer...for every 6 at bats Richie had Edgar had 7...seems like a minor difference. Are you saying because rules changed and Richie was not allowed to be DH that means Edgar better? Allen displayed more skills than Edgar...hitting, base running, and ( by default ) fielding .What the heck was Edgar better at ...being a nice guy???
Richie Allen was awesome! Will always miss him.
Reds fan here Dick Allen should be in Cooperstown. It's a down right disgrace that he isn't.

mauch was the reason the phillies collapsed in 1964. his handling of a tired pitching staff did them in in the last 2 weeks.
Similar to what Durocher did to the Cubs in 1969.
Absolutely -he lost confidence in every pitcher except Bunning and Short and wore them out!
During that stretch, Aleen batted .414 with 3 HR, 12 RBI and 13 runs scored.
Love brother Allen
Dick Allen and Roberto Clemente were my favorite non Dodger players. Although Allen did play one year in Dodger blue in 1971.
I don't have a favorite dodgers player because I'm a Phillies fan, but if I had to pick one I'd have to say Chase Utley.
Dick Allen seems like a nice, astute, soft spoken guy,
contrary to his "malcontent" image.
I have met Dick Allen and he is the nicest guy one could ever meet.
Even if he was a "malcontent" can you blame him?

I saw him clear it by 10' or so.
He wore a batting helmet in the field as they threw batteries at him.
GREAT guy - great ballplayer.
Dick Allen HOF

That park would have been tough on Allen's power. Maybe he would have tried to hit for a higher average
@@chrisverby3047 That's true too, I didn't think about that. But even if you just consider the road games, that's a heck of a lineup.
Awesome interview!
you have two or three Allen's on the team....you win the PennanT!
Gene Mauch has to be the most overrated manager in baseball history.
Amen.

I'm from Boston and some say we weren't much better.
... And people with that mindset are still lurking to this day. STILL.
And yes Boston isn't much better
@ohbrother5145 Boston always had that very open racism. They actually burned school buses to stop court-ordered integration.

Seems like a nice affable guy .. too bad he was misunderstood or the situation in Philly wasn't good for him.
He wasn't misunderstood. He was the victim of blatalant racism and the manager was more worried about his ball club 👍
