keep in mind: this is only the first part in a series that will go on to have a handful of videos in it!
what groups do you want to see in part 2?
p.s. - the groups in this video were taken from the community post, and of course young posse will remain #1 for a while (unless they stop doing this trend of never repeating genres) but i wanted to get part 1 out and use the comments on here to see what groups i should include in the 2nd part :)

I think because shinee has so many songs, that alot of the genres are used again and again. So the genres arent quite diverse
And theyre doing mostly contemp. pop or some rnb or electro music.
I think its harder for older groups to constantly do new genres everytime they comeback. Imagine 100+songs that is unique. The fanbase won't be able keep vibing and stay because of the constant change. Easier for new groups to show their potential and adaptability, esp since this generation of kpop has been reached more and influenced more by western music.

    • @taemteez

sorry for not replying sooner - shinee are one of my ults and i was going to include them, but i started with their discography and their early songs (starting with debut and only ending around misconceptions era) are almost entirely 3 genres - contemporary r&b, electroclash and electropop. this not only was gonna hurt their numbers and look a little sad for me as a hardcore shawol but also its a super tedious task. i have their recent albums in my masterlist (story of light thru hard eras) and those are definitely more diverse, so i would love to at least include them in pt2 to showcase their diversity in later releases!
plus, they have some genres that are super uncommon and those would be cool to mention, i.e. cøde being trouse!

Idk what the process of analysis was but I wondered how you would categorised songs like Savage by aespa which have a lot of mix of genres. Did you consider all the genres. A lot of kpop songs actually have a mix of genres and don't necessarily always stick to one specific genre to begin with. It would be cool to actually make a video on how you analysed this. Personally I think this would be a fun idea for a video .

    luminous you wanna be luminooooouuuuuuuuus?
and mama is obviously art pop because its literally a masterpiece
imo its one of the best kpop debuts 😭i especially love the metal version performance. i've listened to that one more than the original song
i love listening to classical instruments as well, wish it was more utilised in kpop songs
i ADORE dreamcatchers intros 💝💝 theyre just so 🤌i love it when im playing spotify snake and i have to collect a song thats for example a ballad and when i do collect it the next song it be a dreamcatcher intro and you know well my eardrums are BURSTING because of how loud, fast and exaggerating they are (not sure if thats the correct term, but i mean exaggerating in a good way) ( i love it when contrasting songs are back to back when i play spotify snake) (spotify snake is a feature that allows you to play snake with the songs in a playlist, only available on ios mobile i think)
i honestly expected groups with a bigger discography like bts or seventeen because i believe that the bigger discography an artist has the more diversity in it? but thats probably just me
super amazing and informative video too

the groups i knew would certainly be there are (g)i-dle and le sserafim. while some groups on this list have this variety because of many sub-genres of r&b or pop or rock yet still mainly work in one overall genre, these girls are exploring polar opposite sounds and concepts with each comeback. pop-rock concept? hip-hop concept? some experimental runway typa music? they’ve literally done it all atp and yet still have a very distinct color

I love this, but also some of these genres are insane 😂 I feel like there has to some middle between "it's all just kpop, the genre is pop" and this, but I don't know where that line should be drawn, and I know for certain that wherever it is drawn, there will be disagreement. In this video, some broad categories of music seemed to have a lot more fine-tuned categories than others. It's so complicated...
I'm pretty sure many of these genres probably come from Everynoise, which uses AI to map genres and create names. But what ends up happening is regional differences get created where there isn't a difference in sound, entire genres are made for one artist, and female artists are given different labels than male artists. Like, female artists get "bubblegrunge" instead of grunge, "trap queen" instead of rap, "country dawn" instead of country. It does this with gender, race, country, region, city - everything. It's AI, and it takes the slop we put in and produces slop (not that all the genres it produces are slop, but they have the racist and sexist biases we fed into it).
I got more into this as I went on and did research into it. If anyone is interested I recommend reading "The Mediation of Gender, Identity, and Difference in Contemporary (Popular) Music Streaming", if you can manage academic writing, since this stuff is dense and ngl I haven't finished. It's upper division social sciences college homework stuff. good luck

The rule to count the diversity isn't the best. What with for example Twice? They have hundreds of songs, so they need hundreds of genres to have good diversity? 😅

i definitely agree! but its hard to quantify genre diversity without this sort of formula, and it's been used to quantify diversity for as long as i can remember

stray kids for sure for next part; there are analysis of them but considering how much music they have, it gets outdated quite often. Mamamoo perhaps? They've been in the industry for so long (group analysis...their solo careers would be a whole new video).
