I think that both Ma Yanhong & Julianne McNamara were deserving of the Gold Medal. Ma's routine was innovative and had cleaner form/bodyline, but Julianne showed more variety in swing elements and transitions, punctuated by a perfectly stuck dismount. Too bad they eliminated the possibility for medal ties at the Olympics after 2000. There are too many athletes who have been robbed of a Gold Medal (e.g. Marian Dragulescu, Paul Hamm, Nastia Liukin) because of the ludicrous rule that the IOC implemented. If the athletes receive the same score, they should receive the same medal, like they would at any FIG sanctioned event.

Anyone with eyes can clearly see that Andreea was the superior gymnast on that fateful night, but she later had her medal taken away because she took a Sudafed (or something else containing Pseudoephedrine which is a banned substance)? I definitely don’t. A lot of damage was done doing those “belly beats” including infertility and spinal issues. They were cool but so damaging.
