Just a couple of points that some people have deliberately forgotten. Mary Lou had the most difficult Floor Exercise and Vaults in the world. No one else, at that time was as good as her on those two events. That gave Mary Lou a built in superiority over all her opponents, even the best Soviet gymnasts.
Solo una cuestión que para esos juegos no hubo gimnastas soviéticas como dice la persona del comentario además a Katy le calificaron de menos para favorecer a retton ok
I will never forget this moment. I remember it like it was yesterday. From the hype of Bela to his student, to her nailing that vault, and seeing Ms. Szabo's tears. You knew that Mary Lou was headed for the Wheaties Box.
I remember that when I was 16 (1984)...same age as Mary Lou!.....I screamed / jumped up and down while watching her on TV with my family, relatives and friends!!......:)
I watched this video before the 2012 games started to remind me of what the Olympics really mean. I am from West Virginia and Mary Lou's relatives just lived up the street from me and I remember this moment so vividly. I remember holding my breath and waiting for her to stick that landing. I remember crying because finally someone from WV wasn't a joke. We had an Olympic champion against all odds and she made all of us proud to be from WV. She is and always will be an inspiration.
You can tell her and Bela got along great. Both are so driven, charismatic and passionate about gymnastics. Thanks for uploading! This was so fun to watch! :D
I was so proud of you, Mary Lou Retton cancel that was a glorified Olympic moment It’s now October 23 2023 that was a grand moment I am Olympics history, and now you’re in the in the hospital. I just pray that you continue really get well love you, Mary Lou Retton.
These athletes are really amazing and wonderful. They give everything up for their love and passion for their sport and in turn give the audience so much joy to watch them. Excellence and passion is a really wonderful thing to witness. The power of hope, drive and the human spirit.
I know people still talk of how her 10.0 on floor wasn't deserved which is quite ridiculous. That double layout with no step was the best in gymnastics at the time, and I still think she and Shushonova did the best double back layouts of all time.
+LovelsFries you make a good point, however, at the time, the 10.0 marked a perfect routine--if you perfectly completed a routine or vault that achieved some arbitrary "maximum difficulty". The overhaul of the system and intro of the code of points and the weighted difficulty score wasn't introduced until 2005.
although, I do take back my comment... I forgot that back then a lunge back on tumbling passes were allowed (hers is forward but still would have been given same consideration). I was looking at it though today's "stuck landing" standard.
This is one of the most memorable moments in Gymnastics! I would say the Second since Nadia Comaneci scored the very first perfect 10 on the uneven bars. Definitely the most impressive thing I have ever seen winter or summer olympics! But Mary Lou's Vault kind of put the path for other American gymnasts that they can be explosive as they are today! 😃😃 I think Bela Kàroli is the best gymnastics coach I have ever seen in my life! A legend! 😃😃
E Long The current world champion was there, and her score was so high that it would have been nearly impossible to beat her. She got two 10's out of four events. Don't try to take away from her win.
+Nathan Boecker You do realize Szabo fell on her uneven bars (during optionals which carried over back then) routine which meant she counted a fall and yet only lost by .05. Plus Mostepanova got four 10s in the all around at the Alternate Games in '84, she would have won.
+linkin20la Hypothetical situations do not matter. If Szabo had deserved to win, she would have won. You have to be at your best when it counts, that's what makes a gymnast great. She didn't perform to her best, so she didn't deserve that gold medal. Simple as that.
She qualified AHEAD of, then beat the reigning World Champion at the time, which means she beat the gymnast who was supposed to be the best in the world that year. Bela was right about one thing - it WAS a beautiful athletic competition, and the best athlete of that moment won. The judges for all four events saw the same athletes, and if they thought Zsabo was better they had the opportunity to score it that way. Sorry, but that day Mary Lou, who was at her absolute peak, was better, and she deserved her gold medal. It is not diminished, or "phony" or "not really an Olympic gold"; it is as real as it gets because she beat the world champion to get it.
I've been choreographer of amazing Daniela Silivas, Aurelia Dobre, Camelia Voinea, Lavinia Milosovici, Ecaterina Szabo, Eugenia Golea, Lavinia Agache, Cristina Bontas, Gabriela Potorac, Maria Olaru, Popa Celestina, Cristina Grigoras, Simona Pauca & other great gym at Olympic Gym Romanian Team. Also together with Ms. Mirela Dicu I was coach of Lavinia Milosovici & other great gymnasts. Thank you very much for your comments about the Romanians. With friendly thoughts of gratitude, Leo Cosma
This is just amazing!!!! What was so awesome about Mary Lou is that she wore her heart on her sleeve, and she just exuded this determination that was thrilling to watch. Loved it!
Watching this then I was so proud to be an American. Mary Lou loved gymnastics and her country you can tell. Thank you Mary Lou for those beautiful moments we will never forget.
He really is a great coach but why wasn't he allowed to cross the barrier? She could've been disqualified for what he did? What does that have to do with anything?
No, he was Mary's coach. He just wasn't chosen to be the coach for all 3 girls competing that day, so he wasn't able to be where the real coaches stand. Yet, he still wanted to be there to coach Mary through the events, so he found a way to get a pass to stand where the media stands. (Check out part 1 of this video)
I was only 2 years old and every time I see that second vault I get misty-eyed. Also, if Bela Karolyi's commentary doesn't give you LIFE, you have no soul! haha He had his problems, but I responded to that exact same type of verbal coaching when I was younger, in any athletic thing. I just love watching this after all these years.... xo
I remember watching this in my best friend's bedroom the night before we left for vacation with her family. At the time it was extremely exciting to see this girl who was the same age as us, doing this amazing feat!!
Oh my gosh, i don't know why but every time i see that first vault i just get goosebumps!!!! It's just amazing to see anyone from any country succeed in what they do. It's just this overwhelming sense of pride and exhilaration. You just feel so happy for them and you just want to yell "YES"!!!!
I so love her. She was my inspiration for everything I did. I had every single picture or article of her on my bedroom wall. I absolutely loved and admired her. I had the pleasure of meeting her when I was staying at the Cleveland Ronald McDonald house. I thought it was a joke that she was coming and I was so nervous I almost couldn’t come out of my room. For a moment during my absolute worst nightmare, I had a chance to experience someone so beautiful and loving. She is every bit of the same person behind the cameras as she is in-front facings them. The one thing that made a huge difference to me was that she had strong muscular legs like me. I wasn’t lean like a ballerina. My muscles showed. She made me feel better about myself. I got to put my arm around her and that was just like a dream come true. She is a very big supporter of the Ronald McDonald Foundation. I am too. You can’t imagine how it felt to have such a happy moment in such a tragic time of life. I still have the pics and I love every minute of it. I still get goosebumps each time she vaulted! She’s amazing and I’m so glad that she gets the recognition she deserves. #teammarylouforever
What a powerhouse! I remember watching this competition, and was sure Ekaterina would win with her grace on the floor routine and balance beam, but Mary Lou was so strong and precise! Both are great athletes, and a medal is a sliver of difference.
I Remember that vault and her so vividly it is still like it was yesterday, I remember standing and shouting in my living room, I remember crying I was so happy. She inspired me in the greater part to a World Gold Medal in my sport, she was an absolute inspiration. I hope her life is happy and stays happy, she gave hope to so many.
I have seen beautiful women, ever since I was at the age to notice them, now I am 61 & can appreciate their beauty even more. I have stood next to rare beautiful women in my own backyard & have marveled at their grace & the way that they handle themselves. I must say that the high top notch in these women is Marylou whom I have never met, so sad, I'm from W. Va. too & the excitement of seeing 1 of ours produce with the highest caliber of excellence achievable just puts pride in our hearts. I can now say without an ounce of lust in my spirit that this girl will always be my most beautiful lady. thanks Marylou for sharing you life with us.
This is what got me interested in gymnastics! Turns out my talent wasn't in athleticism but instead in music, but I love watching gymnastics all the time!
Looking back and seeing this again. We had pride back then in our country our athletes and the work it took. It really is so sad that there isn't any now. Bella said he saw mary lou at a competition and saw her raw power and i love nadia but she was elegance. That was start of power gymnasts. Best comparison is shaun johnson and nadia liskin Love them to. I didn't have the talent that any of these girls did or do. But i can certainly appreciate the one who pretty much paved the way Just think if there wasn't a mary lou retton in 84 there probably wouldn't be the champions in gymnastics today . In the 80s maybe they gave 10s like candy but not in women's gymnastics. Mary lou was the start of the womens gymnastics becoming a winning force in America.
People can say what they want about Bela, but we of that era of time, could almost feel his unique expertise, enthusiasm , charisma.. total package- people in synch with him in those moments just were great as they could be!” as the old saying goes, “ There just something about him.. “ Oh what a great time to experience the overall gymnastics kick off if you will. He was definitely one of a kind imho
I was not much into Gymnastics growing up but something about Retton caught my attention from the start and every time I seen her do her routine I got excited. I was just a young kid, actually Im only a couple years younger then she is. I truly wish her a speedy recovery with going through what she is going through. Retton was like a hero to me in my young years.
I remember the moment watching the 1984 olympics with my mom and sisters i was only six years old we were so excited and we knew she could do it and she did .will not ever forget it,stilleasy to remember we were so happy and amazed 😊
She is the one and only Mary Lou. Her smile flowed over to that crowd in Pauley Pavilion, and to everyone watching her on TV. She was great, and everyone just loved her and was pulling for her to win over Szabo. Her and Olga Korbut were the only ones around that time frame who could make you laugh and smile and, Korbut was the only one who could make you cry, when things just didn't go the way she wanted it to go.
Thanks Mary Lou. I will never forget that magic moment. Tenths of seconds seemed an eternity. And despite of the cirurgy a few weeks before, you recovered and won.

This was so exciting! I forgot most of it, I was going into my senior year of high school a week after the Summer Olympics were over. Someone said MLR shouldn't have gotten a 10 because she stepped back? Really? Wow. The Romanian girl actually was not straight on, and still stuck the landing. She shouldn't have gotten a 9.5 either. Yes MLR was proud and excited, first American to ever win. Anyone that's critical of her is just bored and jealous. :) MLR is still such a doll. Loved this video!
this just proves that you can accomplish anything and go for your dreams. There is always someone out there who says you can't do it but those ppl need to be ignored and keep believing. I LOVE U.S.A!!!!
I was 12 when this happened. Was magical. For 20 years she only American gymnast to win gold all around. Of course its way different now Mary Lou little girl from west va. Showed everyone that u can do anything. I cant imagine how anyone couldn't be excited and thrilled . She made history and most American gymnast will tell u she inspired them. Of course shes not Simone Biles but thats fine. Simone is the goat and like micheal phelps no one is gonna do what they have. But mary lou inspired simone and of course its so different now but to all the haters someone paved the way for the young ladies of now. Jealously is such an ugly emotion.
I just love how Mary completly ignores Don and goes and hugs Bela.

Ah bullshit Szabo should've won. That's why i love from Patterson to Biles. US rules❤

my mom and dad both came off the couch and screamed when she nailed the vault and won the gold.
The pressure on Retton was unbelievable. Just beyond. Surely one of the greatest moments in Olympic history.
And we all love Mary Lou!!!
I remember that when I was 16 (1984)...same age as Mary Lou!.....I screamed / jumped up and down while watching her on TV with my family, relatives and friends!!......:)

Impressive to see him happy and cheering Mary Lou on.
He really built up her confidence.❤️
He pushed US gymnastics into the top tier.
the love she has for her coach bela is there for all to see, what a fantastic team.

I remember watching this unfold. Still brings tears to my eyes...
I like that we can see Ecaterina Szabo applauding Mary Lou's floor routine @0:43 :-)
yeah, I agree. I noticed that also. her doing that really speaks volumes of her character.
It's called CLASS!
Thats classy of Ekaterina Szabo
What are you looking at? All I saw was her sitting there.
I was glued to the TV for this, it was an awesome time!
You can tell her and Bela got along great. Both are so driven, charismatic and passionate about gymnastics. Thanks for uploading! This was so fun to watch! :D
