This was a little before my time too. It never really clicked with me in the same way Icewind Dale did. I never finished the game either. By the time I reached Baldur's Gate itself I'd already trekked from the bottom of the map to the top again and my enthusiasm for the story had already been exhausted.
I am also a newbie without any nostalgy, here is my opinion about the Baldur's Gate duology (trilogy): I started to play with the BG1 at the end of the last year, finished two playthroughs and now I am about halfway in the BG2. While I consider the first game "only" great, the second one is one of the best games I ever played so far. It took only about 3 hours to learn the basic rules (I picked up everything else during my runs), classes, spells etc., so it was no serious time investment for these amazing games. I would say BG1 is about at the same level (BG2 will be probably better) as those modern CRPGs I tried out, i.e. Dragon Age Origins, Pathfinder Kingmaker (I am really looking forward to playing with the Pathfinder WotR, though) and DOS2.
Considering a huge lack of good modern games, it doesn't matter how picky you are about graphics and advanced game mechanics, you'll eventually play AND enjoy BG1 and BG2 if you like CRPGs, just maybe you'll do it after more modern (and better, unless you're nostalgic) takes on tabletop like Pathfinder WotR, Pillars of Eternity, NVN ADWR etc.
this is a very formulaic approach to playing the game....i simply roleplayed my dude.....hired npc if the story got better by their addition into my party....i suggest you dont focus so much on number crunching power gaming, and let the game tell its story
5th edition wasn't even a twinkle in Wizards of the Coasts eye when this was released. In fact when this went live, 2nd edition was what was out.

OKAY! I have been held back long enough and will do a finally a fucking cleric/fighter multi walkthrough!
Yes
Assuming one can get over the 2e rule set and dated graphics.
Otherwise it’s an incredible game

I just played BG 1 again on a tablet after 20 years. I can confirm it is still an engrossing experience.
A new player will need to learn oldschool rules but beyond that those games are amazing. Honorable mention for Planescape Torment, awesome story.
Agreed best dialogue ever in any videogame. But i have to say the combat was kinda boring disappointing compared to Baldurs Gate
@@salamandarin8626 Yes, as you said the combat is not great but the spells animation are. Who can forget 1min+ for celestial host :)

Notably not Kingmaker?

Yes, it is.
