    As a photographer i attended Kenny Wheeler's 70th birthday concert in London in 2000. I spent the afternoon photographing rehearsals and sound checks. Shortly before the concert we were told that no photographs were permitted during the performance but we were welcome to stay. Nobody objected, nobody disobeyed and my rehearsal photos still sell occasionally.

    John Zorn is the absolute coolest. That's the best intro to a punk show, I mean Masada show ever.

    can anyone tell me what scale these guys use ? it always sound like they write in the same scale mode i might be wrong on that im not up on my theory too well but i can hear pretty good

      Jewish scale to tune instruments
      Little bit different not 440 etc...

    • @trzesnk
      @trzesnk Місяць тому

      This is not that easy. Of course you can use major with second diminished or minor with fourth raised to pretend it is “Jewish”, but this music is much more complex.

    I love everything but but Mr. Zorn's trashy little intro. Could have been handled a little bit better than that. You're in Poland they probably don't care if you're from New York. Otherwise an amazing performance!!

    Yeh Zorn is obviously talented, but he’s also abrasive & obnoxious. You shouldn’t be a dick to anyone, but coming from a musician, especially not to the people who are running your sound.

    I was going to watch the video but am making my exit after all the profanity in the intro. As a performer, producer, technician and fan, I recommend setting the rules beforehand, communicating them clearly and then letting security handle any miscreants rather than icorporating "artistic angst" into the program. If you want that vibe, stage a pugilistic exhibition.😮

    Trying to enjoy the music, but the announcer seems to enjoy his crap mouth more. He can sit down and let the band play. Don't care who he is with his f bomb mouth, have been to Poland too and the f bomb mouth was just as lame there. Keep the music New York cool and Nuff said!

      Haha, that's the composer and I'm assuming this group has always been one where he 'actively' conducts by sitting right up in the musicians' faces. I've heard people claim that it makes all the difference in the way the pieces are executed, but I think Zorn's just being ultra-precious and that players like Feldman, Friedlander, and Cohen could execute these kinds of performances in their sleep with no difference in the sounding result. I'm also with you on the idea that Zorn's awkward wanna-be-punker shit can fuck off. Dude never spent a moment NOT having a silver spoon in his mouth and he's still wearing army pants like he's the most edgy teenager in high school. Fuck you, Zorn, you're like 50-60 years old now and your fucking gigs cost like $50+ to attend. Way to go in becoming the bottom left-hand-corner of New York City's useless and sociopathic 'permanent avant-garde' art scene. May all of your slack-jawed, Adult-Swim-watching, Mike-Patton-worshiping, awkward-suburban-high-schooler fans never stop saying stupid shit about how 'profound' your countless shitty Jewish folk records are.

      +cleomagoolando He's not just conducting. These pieces are not "written", they just have a theme and a chord progession. The rest is improvisation that is conducted by Zorn through a vast array of hand gestures.

    Zorn could stay in between the audience just listening to his music without playing the role of teeneger sitting on the stage - I found him really irritating. but maybe it's me. and it's not the main point. main point i that this music has (to me) none interest: just stereotipes. jewish music stereotipes mixed with improvised music stereotipes...
    Zorn could be such a fine musician ... if only he wasn't so shallow. he made very good things some twenty years ago...
    If only he would take a rest and think - stop produecing too much music. take a rest and think. he's not Stockhausen...
    All the players are obviously excellent ones.

      It's Zorn's music. He's conducting them. Whether you like the music or not is a matter of opinion, of course. I agree with your point on his output though - too much Masada and related works, and too many releases in general. When I first started getting into Zorn he was truly DANGEROUS (Naked City, Painkiller, Elegy), and nowadays not much stands out. I'm confident he'll find his mojo again though (even though he probably feels he never lost it, or cares what anyone thinks!)

      They are musical games. He's calling certain things out with gestures and the like. They follow rules and are predictable but could be made to flow through different courses. It's different than just conducting.

    • @emilianoturazzi
      @emilianoturazzi 7 років тому +1

      Shane Taylor you're probably right and I was wrong, it's a way of conducting. I probably didn't follow the video with the proper attention. so I have to apologise for this :) I should know that conducting in "jazz" can be so. nevertheless I always find irritating a certain approach to it (I can't stand even Duke Ellington's public outfit regardless his musical personality), but it's me.

    • @emilianoturazzi
      @emilianoturazzi 7 років тому

      Raspa Was he's obviously entitled to do what he fells and to conduct as he feels. I'm entitled to find it irritating all the same :). on his music I think we agree.

      One thing I have always appreciated about John Zorn is his stage presence. I love the Masada String Trio, and other more obscure musical arrangements of his, and they're all unified by him being on stage, conducting, as he does best.

    ...a bit surprised about the initial outburst. Something might have happened before.
    As a listener, he is not really putting me at ease and setting the right mood for the concert.
    I found it a bit vulgar and stupid, honestly.
    Apart from that, great music and great band, as always!
