Nothing to do in the Garden

  • As many of you know I am all about efficiency in the garden so I can spend more time enjoying it and less time working in it.
My overall goal is not to eliminate the time in my garden but to spend the same amount of time just doing things I enjoy more. This week my father and I were again busy harvesting crushing and pressing apples and we have been enjoying fresh tomatoes, zucchini, strawberries, carrots with a lot more on the way including my family heirloom grapes that are starting to turn but are usually best after the first frost in the fall.
As I was thinking about this week’s video I realized I have shown you everything that is going on already. So the thought came to me to show you some quick ways I reduce the level of effort in the garden in order to spend more time simply enjoying it.

I prune my vines in the fall so that i can give it to my goats. We also make stuffed vine leaves with ground beef and rice. Same can be done to sour cabbage leaves.

I just wanted you to know my family and I love your channel. You are one of the few people on you-tube that takes a scientific approach to gardening. I live in the U.S.A and here people for some reason distrust science. So your channel is refreshing.

Thank you Terry for letting me know that! It is really nice to have such a kind comment!
I am a man of science and love to share.

Funny how we gardeners sometimes complain that gardening takes a lot or too much of our time when we really can't get away from digging around and doing something out there. But it's true what you said about optimizing results by doing less.

Oh I love to tinker in the garden I just would rather tinker than weed too much or something ;)

Hi! I'm a new subscriber and spent the last week or so browsing your old videos. Thank you for sharing your experience and wisdom here! I look forward to starting my own gardening journey soon. I must say, I don't know if it is a result of a change in your diet thanks to the garden... But the change in your physique is impressive and inspiring. I wish you the best with your health, garden, and family!
(Oh! And I really enjoyed the pace of this video - to me it sounded like the way you might normally speak, rather than a slow read of a script. Just wanted to share another perspective. Keep up the great work!)
I look forward to more videos! Many thanks for the inspiration ☺️

Welcome to the community my friend ! We are glad to have you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and for noticing my changes ! It's been quite the journey but well worth it ! I think I'll post a video on it soon !
I was excited about this video. Is a rather odd goal but one I have had for awhile to perfect the method enough that I don't have much to show lol.
I don't usually read my script I read the lines toss it in my back pocket and say them in what ever natural way comes out. I slow down because people some times find it hard to keep up with the speed I talk when I am passionate.
Have you seen my video blogs ? They are kind of a fun side project.

Same here, Stubbs. Most everything is going 'great guns' right now. Lovin' the plums, strawberries, blackberries, onions, tomatoes, zuchhini, kale, and Chinese broccoli. Almost too much abundance. Also working on my Tabbouleh recipe quite a bit, now that I have lots of tomatoes and parsley to play with. (Hint: cucumber makes nice addition)

***** Good for you, Stubbs. I made blackberry jam yesterday. And plum jam the day before. Peaches aren't ready here, yet. Also the second crop of raspberries is coming soon.

that would be nice. We only get one raspberry crop but it was HEAVY this year! I froze some for jam making!

Just started mulching my garden this year with wood chips, leaf mulch and 10% coffee grounds from star Buck's. I only have to weed about 30 min a week on 300 square foot raised beds. Free and local resources sure saving me time!

Looks like you're have a great year! Hoping for a last bit of summer heat here in Holland because it has been disastrous sofar but i was lucky i diversified and planted 3 times more than the previous year so still plenty of food and more to come! Mainly cabbage, ha! :D Today was lovely. That will encourage some more bean flowers. The rest of the week looks to be the same with no more rain. What a lovely time of year. I love the fall so much. Your grapes look great!

We have had a fair year some things are flops but that's the risk of a zone 3 garden !
I can't wait for these grapes ! 3 year wait

It's been extremely dry this summer here in Southern Ontario, but I find that using hay at the base of my raised beds helps to retain water.

Happy to see that the hailstorm didn't cause too much damage for you. My row of lettuces have gone horribly bitter. I think they didn't get enough water. I'm guessing that this is irreversible (they're near to bolting) and they're destined for my neighbour's rabbits. Oh, well, I like rabbit paté... The point you made about dense planting was interesting, because the few good lettuces I have were in quite deep shade. I won't put lettuces in full sun next year...

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  8 років тому

It sure was a nice to see the damage was not total !
Leafy greens always do better in part shade. They stay tender and more flavourful. That's why I don't do many. My garden gets too much sun!

We too have struggled but our droughts swap over for floods so either way we have not had a happy medium. Hope things get better for you !
Think of the bright side. I have 6 months of growing. Conceivably you could have 12 months !

I really wish we could employ wood mulch like you do, but it seems like we'd have to apply it twice, if not 3 times per year. It just decomposes so quickly here :-(

Would have to agree. It's harder to take in when talking at speed....and there's no constraints really on taking his time. But it's also the difference between communicating to workplace professionals versus enthusiast hobby growers....

Hey there. I love your video. we started collecting autumn leaves last year and I'm wondering what you think of our process. ua-cam.com/video/HG7iiFKOono/v-deo.html

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden

that looks like an interesting method! the kitchen scraps would work quite well to balance out the leaves and provide a healthy compost! That said the plants will tell you if your method is good!
