My biggest advice for 2 is don't feel afraid to ask around for questions, the games combat is VERY poorly explained due to rushed development and most of their team being dragged away for Breath of the Wild, but EXTREMELY satisfying once you get deep into it. Other advice is try not to rush through it, XC2 in particular is a game that greatly benefits from taking your time and going through it slowly, just take it all in at a decent pace and you'll enjoy it much more than if you JUST rush the story.

Just want to double down on this. XC2 has my favourite combat system in any JRPG, ever, but it's complex and convoluted on the surface (despite flowing butter-smooth once you get it), and the tutorials are unforgivably horrible - the biggest flaw by far in a game that's already riddled with flaws. If I remember right, they're actually actively wrong about some of the mechanics. Doing some out-of-game research (I second chuggaaconroy as entry-level and Enel for deeper stuff) is unfortunately basically required to be able to understand how the game wants you to play it, though once you do it's an incredibly rewarding experience. Like almost everything about XC2, it's an all-time masterpiece dragged down by really massive issues.

My experience with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was a rollercoaster (no spoilers):
Got halfway through the game, hated and dropped it. -> Watched someone else play past where I dropped. -> Saw a cutscene that made me feel like I'd regret not doing it myself. -> Finished my run and a NG+ run.
XC2 has a lot of technical flaws and controversies, but somehow it's still my favorite one in the series.
I recommend giving the story a 2nd viewing after you beat the game, 'cause I'm not the only one who's said the story is amazing the 2nd time around (not even including the DLC when I say that, but you should beat that too before the 2nd viewing).

Xenoblade is a special gem. A game that by all accounts shouldn't have worked, but it successfully told an engaging story with gun gameplay.

  • @NintendanGX
    @NintendanGX Рік тому +5

The first Xenoblade is my favourite game of all time, rivalled only by the third game. It really is a masterpiece, and while it's combat isn't as deep as X or 3's, it's still a fun time all around, and the joy of exploration, spending time with its characters, and embarking on the well-thought-out story is something I'll never forget. The fact that every late-game twist is constantly foreshadowed as early as the first three chapters goes to show that Monolith Soft thought everything through and genuinely cared about crafting a game that could stand the test of time (which evidentially, it does, as the remake proves). I was blown away by what it accomplished on the Wii's hardware, and the Switch version simply ironed out what few kinks it had.
I also love that, despite getting sequels, the first game can still be enjoyed as a stand-alone, self-contained experience. Its story is so fulfilling and complete, that if a sequel ever fell short of its quality standards (*cough* Xenoblade 2 *cough*), I could simply disregard it as non-canon, as it has no bearing on the original's concluded narrative. Frankly, I didn't care how or even if Xenoblade 1 connected to past Xeno games, because it didn't actually matter, and wasn't required to enjoy the game on its own merits. Not every story needs to have a grand multiverse that demands you experience mediocre or bad products just so you can enjoy the "good" ones, and if it weren't for the third game course-correcting the series, I'd maintain that Xenoblade never should've become a "series" in the first place, especially when I'd much rather they create a new stand-alone story for each game, completely divorced from the world of the Bionis and Mechonis. It's why I was fine with Xenoblade X doing its own thing, because it wouldn't be stepping on the first game's toes.
Monolith Soft might be my favourite game studio, and while I'd enjoyed past games like Baten Kaitos and Disaster: Day of Crisis, it was Xenoblade that really made me take note of them.

I really hope you enjoy Xenoblade 2 when you get around to playing it. It's my favorite of the Xenoblade trilogy and one of my top three favorite games of all time, and I had a lot of fun replaying it recently when making a video about it a few weeks back. I will say that the game doesn't leave the best first impression and its tutorials are notoriously bad, but the gameplay is super fun once you've figured out the loop and the story picks up and becomes really compelling not too long in in my opinion.
Also big thank you to Deci for getting you the game

This game has been in my backlog for years, as it's regarded one of the best JRPGs ever made by a lot of people, including some of my friends, and I could see how good Xenoblade music was even without playing the game. When the Switch remaster came out I actually bought it and... it sat on my shelf for years, until a couple months ago I decided to finally give it a shot. And it did absolutely live up to the hype, going in absolutely blind amplifying my experience. The entire series truly is some of the best games of all time.

FYI Expert mode (as far as I’m aware) doesn’t necessarily make the game harder, it just makes it so that you can control your party members’ levels with whatever exp you currently have for them.
Xenoblade 2 should be right up your alley (I’m not sure, obviously, but it’s a pretty safe bet). I remember you said that the main way that you like to get people to try things is by telling them about a character they might like. Yeah well this one dude in the game is basically a JoJo’s character; he is extremely good at being comic relief, he has a really interesting, mature character underneath that exterior that peaks through just enough so that he doesn’t seem edgy, and (most importantly) he is very big strong muscle man. One thing to note about Expert Mode is that it's really a "hard mode". What it does is make it so you don't immediately gain exp outside of battle, instead any exp you earn from quests and discovering locations are stored in a pool of bonus which you can use to manually level up your characters, or even level them down
It's mainly there for players who want to do all the side quests but without becoming over-leveled, which was an issue in the original release

No matter how much traction this series gets it will ALWAYS be underrated, that's genuinely just how good all the game's stories are and even if one game doesn't speak to you much the other ones will. Like personally xc1 didn't really reach to me emotionally, however despite that I can definitely say it's an amazing game. Xc2 spoke to me the most and never ceases to hit me in the feels in every way possible. And Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is absolutely phenomenally paced, and all characters are extremely fleshed out, and most side quests don't even feel like side quests they feel important to the world. Haven't played X or xenosaga, xenogears, but I've only heard good things and do want to check them out when possible..
To agree with a ton of other comments, Xc2 is extremely hard to get into due to very bad tutorials or lack thereof, but once you learn the combat a lot of people will say xc2 has the best combat in the series, don't be afraid to ask for help or tips, possibly even looking up some guides (chuggaconroy has some good guides on combat) but I wish you the best in continuing the series. It's worth the effort, xc2 highs are insanely high, but it also definitely has the lowest lows as well and nobody will disagree with that lol.

I played Xenoblade Chronicles back when it was still a Wii exclusive and OMG; everything about the game blew me away. Great soundtrack, outstanding battle mechanics, plot depth with good character development and the whole nine yards. I liked the music so much that I actually learned one of the songs on the piano for my own enjoyment--Into Deadlands, Fallen Arm map during daytime.
My biggest surprise was how insanely huge the different area maps were; finding all the landmarks and fully mapping an area took hours and there was about 20 different areas if I remember correctly? Of course, mapping an entire area upon your first entry to area was not a smart idea because there would be that one section where monsters would be level 80+ while Shulk wasn't even level 20 and I was like, "Oh hell no!"
In regards to Xenosaga Trilogy from PS2 era; my thoughts on those games are as follows: Episode 1 was spectacular. Episode 2 was a letdown; I finished the game and all the side-quests but had no desire to continue playing for the fun of it after doing everything but Episode 3 made a great recovery. I'm bummed that Xenosaga games don't have current gen HD ports/remasters and the only way to play it is through emulation; I regret selling my PS2 and Xenosaga games because I guess I thought it would someday be ported to PS4/PS5 and boy was I wrong. I am no kicking myself. If you get ahold of those games, don't give'em up; they are keepers.

Eyyyyyyyyyy, I've been a fan of the game when it was the only Xenoblade game, and I gotta say, I'm so happy that you enjoyed it. Its definitely one of the most intentionally made games I've ever seen, and while I know you didn't engage in side content, there are a lot of sidequests that have different ends which trigger different quests to pop up (and you get to see these endings based on what you see in visions), every named NPC has relationships with other named NPCs, and they also have a list of tradable items meaning that effectively every NPC in the game is a kind of shop, and the items for trade change whenever they move locations like during a quest or when moving to Colony 6, Colony 6 is a smorgasbord of collecting materials, inviting people to join, and just kinda making a new melting pot city. Its really cool! The affinity system is super strict, even though I've played the game like 4 times now, the heart to hearts are always what I finish last. The game is super cool and has all kinds of different party synergies and strategies that works out great. But of course, the story and the pacing is my favorite part, and I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Now to give you some direction on what games to play next (these aren't in order, these are just to give you information)
Xenoblade 2 is my favorite game of all time, but it has a slow start. It DOES get better, but in the meantime, remember to upkeep your gacha blades, pay attention to how combos work, and always aim to Fusion Combo, and you should be good. It is EXTREMELY controversial for the same reasons that some Persona games are controversial, but I hope you enjoy your time with it. Again, its my favorite game of all time. It ALSO has a DLC story expansion called Torna the Golden Country which is basically its own game, but you don't need to worry about that until after XC2 credits roll (There are people who will tell you to play it between like Chapter 7 and 8 of the story. Ignore them. Its a cool machete order but its a little convoluted haha)
Xenoblade Future Connected is an epilogue story that is attached to Definitive Edition on Switch. If you are interested in playing that, give it a shot, the new area is pretty fun, but it is mostly an afterthought
Xenoblade X is a spiritual successor to Xenoblade 1 if you enjoy that combat system, it just takes it to 100. Its kinda a nutso broken game if you know what you're doing, but a more difficult XC1 if you don't. Its pretty alright, but its mostly known for the world and the mecha combat than it is the story (for good reason)
Xenoblade 3 and its own DLC expansion Future Redeemed should be played after XC2. Just trust me on this.
Xenosaga is a weird one. The games are moderately expensive to OH GOD WHY IS THIS $300 expensive, and save data does carry through between games, which is worth noting. These games (specifically the first 2) are much slower, kinda sloggy sci-fi turn based JRPGs (they were designed story first, then gameplay wheras Xenoblade was designed mostly with gameplay first), but they are mechanically competent and are becoming more and more important to the overall series. There's even minor references to Xenosaga in XC2 and XC3, but its not required playing to enjoy those games on their own merits. The point is, its not as fluid as say, the PS2 Atlus titles, but they are still good and among my favorites. The only other thing worth mentioning is that Xenosaga as a series is actually 8 installments long, but of those as an English player, you really only need to worry about the PS2 trilogy, the Flash Animation, and the Mobile Phone game that has a translated script online.
Xenogears is now becoming more and more like the awkward child of the series, because its ideas are being reused but never being called back to. Its a long PSX JRPG as you said, but its probably one of the better ones. The combat is like a hybrid between a JRPG and a 2D fighter, and the story is super complex. Its on you whether you wanna play it, but Its probably my 3rd favorite in the entire series, as someone who likes old school RPGs. Its unlike any other Square game, in a good way

    YEAAAAAAAA XENOBLADE LETS GO
The DLC for 3 just came out and it is SO satisfying. This is by far my favorite game series of all time, I hope you play the entire main trilogy eventually!
Glad to hear you like Riki also, he's weirdly underrated for being so fucking funny (also, on the Mechonis portion, you could have bought weapons that can damage Mechon for any party member!)

Glad you enjoyed it, and hope to see further thoughts on the series. Honestly with the trilogy wrapping up I’ve been feeling weirdly emotional about this whole thing. What a ride it’s been. 2 is a beautiful hot mess of a game with so many interesting ideas and some of my favorite RPG gameplay and story concepts…ever, with a ton of heart and a lovely main cast but also a ton of jank and weird writing/pacing/design choices everywhere. 3 isn’t a perfect game but might actually be be of my favorite games of all time, and is one of a very short list of media that has actually made me cry.

big xenoblade fan here for xeno games you can keep going and really enjoy just blade but i highly reccomend going back and playing xenogears on the ps1 and then the xenosaga trilogy on ps2 they arnt necessary exactly to understand the xeno stories but they are monolithsofts, the company that makes xenoblade original series and you could say they are a greater series that xenoblade fits in, also they are also just really good games with the exception of maybe saga episode 2 and some parts of xenogears disc 2. if you just want to focus on the much more attainable blade games i would just go with the release order frankly for the numbered entries with 2, 2's dlc, the extra story in definitive edition, 3, 3-dlc with saving xenoblade X for if theres a port of it or just when you want a more sci-fi style expirience, hope this helps and you can enjoy the series just as much as me

I guess a warning If you’re checking out future games is that none of them play like each other. The closest games gameplay wise are 1 and X, and even then theres a BUNCH separating them. Just give each game a fair shot when you get to them.

Xenoblade 2 is actually one of my favourite games of all time, although unlike 1, it isn’t a really solid game but with some of the absolute best and worst of the series packed together.
There’s also Xenoblade X as well, and obviously 3 after 2.

I wouldn't recommend playing ALL the xenogames just yet, but the xenoblade games are a good idea, and they've got lots of references to the other xenogames in the games too- also there's the smaller, side story games that are VERY important to the lore at times. So you might want to play those along with the main games they come with.

I love Xenoblade Chronicles. I own it on both 3DS and Switch. My first game in the series was X, actually. But this one is one of my most favorite games ever, on like every front, especially story, along with another game by the same studio, Baten Kaitos. I'm not big into JRPGs, but Xenoblade just does everything so right. I have 2 and 3, as well, but I am just not clicking with 2 at all, so maybe I'll finish the series someday.

I’d highly recommend anyone starting Xenoblade 2 or considering replaying it after dropping it to watch Chuggaaconroy’s “Everything I Wish I Knew Before Playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2” as the gameplay, especially the combat, is some of the best in any RPG but you wouldn’t know that just by reading the in-game tutorials

My advice for you going into XC2 is that you should not feel ashamed of looking up a tutorial for combat because it is really poorly explained in the game. Once you get a good idea of how to play then it gets really good as XC2 has a way much more fun combat than the first.
Also regarding voice acting of XC2. Push through even though the directing for it was horrible. If you want then you can download the JP patch like I did. Some people say that the weird deliveries does add some quirkiness to the EN dub, and I can agree with that sentiment and you may too.

So, now you can play Xenoblade 2, or the epilogue "Future Connected" which is in the Definitive Edition. But I would recommend waiting until after being completely done with Xenoblade 2 and it's DLC, Torna: The Golden Country.
I would recommend playing in release order: Xenoblade 1 > Xenoblade 2 > Torna: The Golden Country > Future Connected > Xenoblade 3 > Future Redeemed
Xenoblade 2 is a great game but it has some weird choices which definitely have impact on enjoyment. It depends on how much the player themselves care about it though, like some character designs are very strange, some jokes are just weird, and gameplay choices are at times annoying (field skills). However, in the grand scheme of things, the combat is arguably the best in the series, the music is just as good as the rest of the series, and the story is very good as well with extremely good villains. (Honestly I like Torna more than the base game so that's something to look forward too as well.)
