@@kisame_007 I know P1 has a manga. It is why I said Persona 2 could do with one since they’re the only mainline games without one which is unusual for the series and the only reason they might not have one was because P1’s run spans 8 volumes over four years which likely made it tricky for P2:IS to get one back when Persona was a more niche series or the author saw the difficulties in trying to adapt both Persona 2’s and didn’t bother.
Mind you as of this writing, P5’s manga adaptation is still being published since 2016. Imagine how that would work for P2 when trying to adapt both games.

I love the surrealism of Persona 1. And growing up with old school anime like Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Darkside Blues, and the Peacock King made Persona and other MegaTen games appeal to me so much. Much of this vibe is lost in P3-P5. I am showing my age with this comment.

For me the biggest problem with p1 and p2 are the slow and janky gameplay. I'm usually fine with old grindy games, but p1 and p2 just feel so much more tedious than what I'm used to. It's a shame that it's hard for me to play bc I really like the aesthetic and charms of those games that the limitations of the era help compliment.

Those games are in that awkward midpoint in JRPG evolution from the classic FF 1-6 style to the more “modern” FF 7-8 style if that makes sense. The midpoint where they’re trying to see what they could actually do with CD-Rom technology.

the notion of a modern persona fan playing the og trilogy and expecting them to be like P3/4/5 is comical to me, if you strip away that notion and go into P1 thinking its a 1st or 2nd generation pokemon game on crack youre gonna have a much much better time with it.

I think 1 and 2 could definitely do with a revised gameplay for a remake if it means to make them more enjoyable to play through. P5’s story in general could be debated all day but the gameplay is unanimously one of it’s greatest strengths and I don’t think it’d be sacrilege to alter the gameplay of those above games into something that’s fun to play which is the important thing for a JRPG needs to do to keep playing it.

Eternal Punishment is my favourite game in the series. I grew up with PSone RPGs but missed this series til later. When I first moved into a cool downtown apartment in my ‘20s, I bought it and played it on my CRT and smoked weed and listened to music in the glow of the neon lights. I dug the Y2K house music soundtrack, the characters who were the same age as me with relatable problems, and the horror theming. And I didn’t miss the relationships from future games because I punctuated my gaming experience with actual dates with real girls, so life felt complete.

I think the issue for a potential remake is that there isn't a clear way to update the mechanics to make them playable for general audiences in our grim dystopian future of 202X. A graphical upgrade and and translation overhaul are easy-ish goals, but removing the unnecessary complexity and tedious aspects to the core game design would be quite an endeavour and could easily break the experience in half.
Yes P1-P2 could be way more popular obviously, but financially speaking there just isn't a rich meaty vein of nostalgia for SEGA/Atlus to mine. It's just name recognition and idle curiousity by existing fans for the majority of your market, and if you can't find a satisfactory way of updating the gameplay you could wind up in that mushy grey area Soul Hackers 2 occupied.

I think the real reason why modern Persona fans can't get into those early games it's because they are closer to traditional, linear JRPGs with their dungeons and what not instead of the hybrid system of a dungeon-crawler + social sim visual novel with heavy emphasis on getting intimate with all of the characters, which is the bit most of the fans are drawn to and why it is so easy to consume these games by watching playthroughs as they skip on the gameplay aspect
It's not really something you can solve with a remake since the games as they would still be very straight-forward "go through dungeon A and then dungeon B"-type of games with no downtime in the middle, trying to shoehorn social links/confidants into it just wouldn't work and would make things a lot worse

maybe it's because i didn't grow up with new games consistently(pokemon aside, and even then, i rarely got to play them), but i don't really understand the logic people use when not playing old games. "it's too old, it needs a remake" no, you just need to appreciate what you have more. i'd have missed out on 80% of my fav games, *ever*, if i only played games that were new or were remakes of old games. i didn't have much of a CHOICE, though, because i was only able to get games that were cheap. i only ever got the bargain bin or used local shop stuff until basically i was 19 or so.
idk, i think people are just spoiled, in terms of content and quantity. if a game is old you don't have to just say fuck it, this is what i can afford and this is the most interesting thing in the store, you can just...download literally anything else and emulate, and that's not inherently a problem, but i think having a wide range of things to access has just ruined people's ability to grit their teeth and go this is what i bought, time to make the most of it. a lot of my childhood games were grindy as fuck, and i didn't always like them, but as i put more time in, i got better, and learned the systems of the games, i enjoyed them more. people don't really have to do that anymore, but even back then, the rich kids never had to. new game sucks? just get a new one. what are you going to do, run out of money?
this is going to come off as like super boomer mindset and probably elitist but that's not how i mean it, i just feel like, if we were still living in the PS2 days, people who had access to P1-EP would have probably actually stuck with them or been more interested as opposed to "nah i can just play another game i have 5156412658653 games to download"
noody should feel FORCED to play these games, i love them and they're amazing, but don't feel forced. if you like them, amazing! if not, fine!

I agree, in general I can't wrap my ahead around "it aged poorly" for games, at least gameplay wise. Why are folks looking at WHEN a game was made as a flaw of the game itself? I get it, things get more convenient in games all around as time has passed but if I'm going to play a game from 1989, I'm not gonna go in expecting QoL industry standard shit from 2019 lol. If im interested wanna try, o know what I'm gonna be getting into is from yesteryear, I'm going to adapt to the game I'm playing, and decide whether it's fun or not after a decent try like i would a game released today. And in general due to the smaller scope and less refined tech, i understand devs had to go for difficulty/other methods to increase a game's playtime. These days a lot of games are made to provide hours of content (whether they're worth it varies) in one go while having access to another game of that type in one click. But back then they were smaller packages intended to be intimately enjoyed time and time again till you mastered it. But maybe I'm also influenced by my first games being 8 bit Atari stuff despite growing up in the early 00s

@@MagillanicaLouM Because certain game design philosophies died for a reason like the tank controls of early 3D platformers?
I played Classic Doom 1 & 2 a while ago and they hold up pretty well even today. I played GTA III and boy, has it aged more than Vice City and San Andreas has because of certain design choices that makes it not too fun in some areas. Parappa the Rappa 1 hasn’t aged too well because of how finicky it is about the controller inputs.
It doesn’t matter if it has the QoL of today or not, I just want it to be enjoyable. Rayman 2 will always be more fun than 1 because 1 is a complete sadist to the player.
If P1 & P2 has aged poorly, then they’ve aged poorly because there’s better JRPG offerings then and now. Some retro games will age like wine (Super Mario Bros) and others will age like milk (Most of the Sega CD library) because that’s how it goes.
Just because something’s old doesn’t mean it’s immune from criticism. There are game choices that has to be called out for when it’s implemented poorly and affects the enjoyment.

@@rayvenkman2087 That's my thing, you go into a 3d gane that has tank controls expecting tank controls. Old games aren't immune to criticism but saying "shit is improved now, so this old game doing a thing that games did when it WAS new sucks" isn't a critique that makes any sense to me. If you're gonna actively go back and play something from 30 years ago, then expect a game from 30 years ago and don't whine that it does game from 30 years ago things. Now of course there are games that sucked even back then, but that's bit due to age, it's just making a shit game, just like shit games still come out today.

I actually find the combat quite fun and the grid system made me wish an improved version if it was implemented in the later games too. I felt it added a tiny bit of challenge to battles as there was another aspect besides just the skills you are using to worry about. I didn't have much trouble with demon negotiation, just had to trial and error it and pay attention to moon phases. Overall I found grinding kind of relaxing even though it is repetitive. It was the perfect thing to do while listening to a podcast innthe background or talking to a friend.
I will always crave for a persona 1 remake because I love the game and do think there's issues to be fixed and story & characters to expand upon, especially the protagonist. I never found the game janky at all but it certainly was different and required a lot of trial and error.
It's not to say that modern persona games are bad, they just don't scratch my itch for media with an obscure feel. Persona 1 isn't a game for everyone with how it is currently, but it certainly was the game for me.

A lot of gamers, especially the demos that play persona these days just aren't built for older gaming. I mean I've seen many folks lump p3 into the "aged poorly" circle after 5 came out too. And how Atlus themselves treat persona's legacy has ultimately made me not want anything to do with new entries in the series going forward. Have sections of the story be chapter based, and have character bonding systems that expand on the battle system. About P1 and P2 games in PAL regions, the original PS1 releases was never actually released in Europe. We did get the PSP versions of P1 and P2IS, but of course those are really expensive now. We also got the original version of Persona 1 in the Playstation classic console (even tho we never got the original lol). The playstation classics release of P2EP on PS3/PSP/Vita we never go either, that means that for a European to play that game legitamatly, you either have to import the physical version + a NA console to play it on, make an American PSN account, or Pirate it.
Europe has generally been screwed pretty hard when it comes to JRPGs over the years, not just by Atlus. We didn't get a Final Fantasy game over here before FF7, and our first mainline Dragon Quest game was DQ8 in 2006 which we got after our first SMT game which was Lucifer's Call in 2005. We got almost non of the big heavy hitter RPGs on the SNES either, no Chrono Trigger, no Mario RPG, no FF4/6 and no Earthbound. Because of this, the Master System and Mega Drive are just as much if not more of RPG machines as the NES and SNES are for us.
Probably one of the strangest cases tho, is with the Xeno series, we never got Xenogears, and we for some reason only got Xenosaga Episode 2, not 1 or 3??? and despite of this, we got Xenoblade Months before NA and in a lot higher quantities.

Here's my hot take, I don't think a remake of 1 or 2 would turn out well. A lot of the staff who worked on those titles (cozy okada, kazuma kaneko, satomi tadashi) have long since been absent from atlus. There's a lot going under the hood of the older games to where a lot could be easily missed by a newer staff. Call me cynical, but I think the creative vision would be lost to a fair extent. Ports are enough for me

@@IceQueen975 it wouldn't be better. It'd just be new, but a lot of what folks enjoy of those titles are definitely core aspects of that original crew's legacy and the overall vibe of Atlus in general at the time. It'd be a P1 PSP soundtrack situation but on a larger scale. And looking at the p3 remake doesn't give me much faith the current team.

persona 2 was an encapsulation of late 90s atlus. references to devil summoner, older smt titles, half the characters being references to the game's developers were all created out of love for a specific point in time. The "soul" of persona 2 would be lost with a wholly new staff. The small tidbits (HASTURCOMEFORTH, persona-specific contacts, or really how the game progresses with its characters and how that changes the dynamic of the party and dialogue) would be completely lost with a remake, i'd imagine. psp port of p1-2 with switchable music for p1 and harder difficulty options for p2is would be best.

Might play it again someday to see if my opinion changes considering I've since played SMT I and II lmao. I definitely think the games should be experienced in some way, but I just wish Atlus would give us other options to play it with more fun/modern gameplay. Not necessarily the one more system, but maybe make the games a bit harder and combat feel faster (or flow better if that makes sense). I would really love a remake or remaster of the original 3 games, because I do think with just a few touches and more accessibility, it would be a much better experience for both the people that have played the game and those that haven't. Just as long as they don't try to change up the themes or atmosphere of the games too much.

honestly, coming from someone who has played a lot of PS1 JRPGs and has played through the classic games multiple times, the only classic persona game whose gameplay issues feel like they mostly stem from the game's age is P1, the P2 duology on the other hand just feels somewhat badly designed gameplay-wise
from the really badly thought-out progression mechanics like buying personas with tarot cards, the convoluted negotiation system and the persona rank grinding hell to more general stuff like the awful encounter rate of the duology (P1's was not good but P2 made it way more egregious), the braindead difficulty of IS, the high difficulty of EP forcing you to grind due to the questionably-designed progression mechanics, somewhat bland combat and fusion spells being overcentralizing to the game's combat.

At this point I'm burned out on the modern persona formula. Each game gets easier than the previous one and the pacing/story aren't getting any better either. Sure they also improved on gameplay but since difficulty is really poorly handled it kind of ruins it all for me.
P3 has a unique flair to it, I loved P4 mostly because of the portrayal of Inaba and its inhabitants. P5 feels a bit soulless to me the more I play it and I'm worried that P6 will burn me out instantly as a result.
I really wished we had a remake of P2 instead of P3 but I'm glad that Metaphor will be there next year and hopefully it won't be way too easy with repeating dialogs on your bloody phone every 5 minutes 😂

If I want to play a challenging game in the series I have a lot of other options
I will say the pacing is fucked in modern persona though in Persona 3 nothing really important happens until Ken, Shinji, and Chidori get introduced halfway through, Persona 4 has my favorite structure of the modern games but still not great, very formulaic until about when Naoto joins then fully changes structure away from the midnight channel which I like. Persona 5 has probably the worst pacing in my opinion since they basically never change the structure until the very last dungeon

Tbh I usually just recommend persona 2 innocent sin on ps1 to people, sure the translation for it isn’t official but it’s still a solid translation imo even with some odd parts but I think it honestly reads better in places. For instance the characters insult Kasugayama high by saying “Kasu-Gay-Yama” instead of just Cuss, it took me the longest time to figure it out that the characters were saying Cuss because it’s supposed to be a crass and sort of unsophisticated school. Sure Kasu-Gay-Yama is a bit immature but in the Japanese translation it’s about the same in terms of immaturity and how it reads. It’s a bit hard to understand but in Japanese it’s about the same as they use a common childhood insult that uses a similar spelling and sounds similar so it’s supposed to be Juvenile but just Cuss sounds kinda weird.
Sure I’ll be the first to admit that the ps1 translation keeps in a lot of the gay stereotypes but even then it tones down what the Japanese game did which at least as a gay person really didn’t bother me.
Also innocent sin ps1 has way tighter gameplay, the game is a lot more challenging and while it’s still not insanely hard it at least requires strategy. As well the gameplay is built off the auto battle system where it does the same as innocent sun psp in letting you set actions and interrupt your turns, but unlike psp you can just change one action at a time and it’s overall just way more streamlined. Of course it’s not a perfect way to do it but seriously the ps1 version of innocent sin is a lot of fun.
(This comment isn’t made to disregard the very real problems with the gameplay in the persona 2 games as they still suffer from awful encounter rates and the auto battle system is a bit weird. If you have access to it I’d say just try the ps1 version if you want to play innocent sin, the additions to innocent sin psp are kinda just okay imo since the climax theater quests are really clunky and not that well written and the prime personas cool but really okay imo)

SMT If, 1, Is and EP would benefit from a modern remake. They could take the opportunity to add more meat to the original stories and just make the JRPG gameplay more refined thanks to new technology.
Modern Persona has the Social Links interwoven into their games while they didn’t exist in these older games; they could use a system like them to help add more insight into the characters that we didn’t have before. Even if they’re effectively made as automatic ones for the active party members and just for gameplay purposes with how the stories are written. Persona 1 has a manga adaptation which helped fleshed out the plot and characters more.
Keeping the stories close to the originals should be a priority but I wouldn’t oppose an expansion to them if only to bridge the gap between them and the modern iteration of the series. What’s old is new again and with the technology of Persona 3: Reload, imagine what storytelling benefits these older Persona games could benefit from including the series’ first ever awakening.

    I played Persona in the order of P3, P1 (emulated), P4, P5, P2IS.
I have very little good to say about P1, but despite that I really love it. The gameplay is way too easy, leveling up is far too slow, encounter rate is far too high, the story is merely adequate, the characters are merely passable, and the dungeons sucked in layout. The only good bits were the graphics, the music and the final bosses because they were an actual challenge. And yet, I really adore it and would lose my mind if it came back in a meaningful way.
Persona 1's manga is also great, as people say. It takes the story and characters from being mid to being genuinely great. They incorporate the game's spells into the story in interesting ways. For example, did you know that persona healing magic doesn't work on people without a persona?
P2IS is a weird one. It was also way too easy, but still had some really cool bosses. The story is insane and off the rails in a good way. Characters were also good. Graphics and music are good. Dungeons were passable. Despite all that, it is my least favorite persona game. I still like it and plan on playing the fan translation of P2EP at some point, but IS doesn't stick out in my head when I think of Persona.

How would you guys recommend playing P1? I already have a PSP emulator but what version has the most content

the PSP version is the best and has the most content, the north american PS1 version cut content out of the game and has a horrendous localization

The PSP version is the more accessible version, though the PS1 version has a fantastic soundtrack and atmosphere at the cost of the combat feeling a lot slower. Honestly they're so different that it wouldn't hurt to try either so just start with what you're more drawn to

@@ellagage1256 there's a mod for the PSP release that restores the PSX soundtrack btw. i definitely recommend it a lot more if you want to have the easy access of gameplay that the PSP version has over the PSX version but want the soundtrack of the PSX version (which fits alot better than the P1 PSP OST imo) not to mention the PSP OST uses the same 5 tracks in every scene while the PSX version has a unique track for almost every scene.

@@Windermed Yeah I tried it but it's still not the best since it doesn't have every track and still has no sound effects

I think if they where a bit faster they would be more popular, the gameplay is fine (in eternal punishment is even great) but they are just way too slow

They recently ported the old school Tomb Raider games to PC and I’m beyond stoked to try those since my experience with Tomb Raider began with the modern trilogy. Same can be said for Persona after the PC ports. Yes I am that young of a fan and I’m only 25.

Classic Tomb Raider was always on PC. People just associated them with the PS1 more because more people owned it than PC for their gaming needs and Quake’s 3D revolution would have still been in it’s early phase.

I watched my brother play P2 on the PS1 then watched him play P3 then P4 on the PS2. My first exposure is 2 but the first Persona game I ever finished is 4. I tried Persona 1 on the PS1 it sucked (PSP one was faster and more playable), P2EP was more bearable and I was able to finish it. The reason I was not able to play 3 was because my PS2 died and my laptop is Pentium old that can only emulate PS1 games and not PSP, until later in my life. So the order that I finished Persona games is: P4, P2EP (PS1), P3FES, P1(PSP), P3P, P2IS(PSP), P2EP(PSP), P5.
PS1 Persona games has slow and janky combat that I'd rather play the older JRPGs that moves faster. Fast forwarding via emulation feature or via PSP version makes it playable. Also yes please, I really want the remake treatment on 2.
