  • The Nikon F2 followed the Nikon F and helped solidify the longest-running full-fledged, professional-grade camera system in history. The F2 provided improvements which seem incremental by today's standards -- film back door instead of a removable back and a faster maximum shutter speed being two. However, at the time, those improvements marked major advancements in the camera's interface. This video series looks at the Nikon F2 and examines how the features as well as how to use it.

    Finally, the F2. My favorite camera. Thanks David. Looking forward to part 2. Great looking dog! It's obvious that you take care of him, I'm sure he takes care of you.

      Thank you! We're lucky to have Steinbeck. He's turned around a LOT in the six months we had him. According to his vet records, last year at this time he weighed 55 pounds and was on his third round of worms treatment in 18 months. He's a healthy weight right now at 42-44 pounds and he isn't being left in a backyard to drink stagnant water. So he's also got a pretty good deal here.

    My favorite camera. I have a slightly older but in better condition F2A with DP-11 prism. Still works despite desintegrated dampers and bent film door. A few hints:
    1) T mode works only on B (Bulb) shutter speed. It will lock shutter open until you return shutter in normal mode.
    2) T mode can be combined with selftimer for speeds from 2 to 10 seconds.
    3) Film door open/close lever can be removed to let through motor drive rewind shaft.
    4) Mirror lockup was necessary for pro body at the time cause some ultra-wide lens can't be used without lock-up. For me this feature allows to confidently use camera at 1/15 speed.

      How is T used with the self timer? I tried that and could not get it to work.

      Thank you! I don't have all these cameras, either, anymore. I've been selling them off and hope to be at ten or fewer cameras after I finish the current batch of video manuals. They're fun to use, but it's more important to have a few that do different things and that are fun to use.

    The shutter speed is from 10 sec. to 1/2000 sec, there is a hidden function that you can set 2 to 10 sec. by utilising the self timer.
    1. Set to T
    2. shutter speed set to B
    3. Turn timer to desire timing, 2-10 sec.
    4. Press the shutter instead of self timer release button.
    BTW, F2 's mechanical shutter is stepless for all the shutter speed. Say shutter speed between 1/125 & 1/250. ,the world most advance mechanical camera.

    Another great review! I have the F2T (DE-1 eye level finder). It is my favorite manual focus SLR- by far, and IMO the most beautiful. The feel and build quality is above any other manual SLR I've used. The F3 should be jealous.

    Finally your video about F2 (if it's not made by you, it's probably not worth watching)! I've been rewatching some of your videos for second or third time during quarantine (maybe not so good since I made myself want a new camera), they are always enjoyable to watch! Which do you prefer, F or F2? Even though F2 clearly has shutter button in better position, extra speed and what I see as perfect way to open film back, F is still a dream of mine.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you, Ivan! Just based on specs, the F2 is better. I also prefer the film back door vice the removable back. But I do think that the F looks very slightly better, aesthetically. Were I to keep only one of the two, it would be the F2.

    Hi David, great videos! Quick question on rewinding - is the last crank of the rewind lever a little more difficult than the previous cranks? Does it offer you a little more resistance right before the roll is fully rewound? I noticed you put a little extra thumb pressure into it, and mine does offer increase resistance at the very end.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you and it can. That's due solely to how the film connects with the take-up spool. Some cameras do that more than others.

  • @sLOMO_77
    @sLOMO_77 3 роки тому +2

    Is the storing without the shutter cocked part a rule of thumb for all cameras or specifically this model? Or models of cameras with curtain shutters? I have a number of full mechanical cameras and had never heard this. The rollei 35s I have I cant even collapse the lens without the lever being cocked. Mostly I'm asking in regard to my olympus 35sp that I love and want to keep in its excellent working order. Thanks!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  3 роки тому +1

      That's a rule of thumb for any camera with a mechanical shutter, cloth, focal plane leaf, or diaphragm leaf. Some cameras that automatically arm their shutters don't need the shutter discharged before storage.

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  5 місяців тому

      Video 2 discusses film loading in detail, but in short, without a prism that has a built-in meter, you don't set the ISO on the camera.

    Great video. Although I love this camera, I sold mine for what many would see as a crazy exchange: I bought a huge kit with a Pentax Spotmatic and lenses ranging from 17mm fish-eye to 135mm... Tough choice, but I'm happy with it!

    • @DavidHancock
      @DavidHancock  4 роки тому +1

      That is a pretty good trade. The 17mm Takumar is a NICE fish-eye. I've had two and they're really sharp by fish-eye standards and their close focus makes them very capable of things like wildflower photography where you want to capture the surroundings.
