Seatbox Extended Legs | Raise your Side-Tray with Big Bird

  • Many match Anglers have wanted to raise their side-tray from the regular height that all major tackle company seatboxes allow, and sometimes, screw in extensions just don’t cut it and end up bending whilst ruining your original threads.
    Well Big Birds talks through the new ‘long’ legs that tackle companies are now providing due to the desire to raise side-trays, and he explains how the Matrix version are adaptable by cutting at a certain height with a junior hacksaw, so the seatbox can still fit into you car and so that the legs are still as sturdy as the originals provided with the box.

    Good idea mate, but there is one issue that would affect a lot of anglers. Having the side tray that high would make it difficult to fish your left margin properly. That’s where hooded side trays in general can be a bit of a pain too. I find the Nufish combi tray ideal because the covered area tilts backwards, allowing you to fish your margin.
    Great videos, keep them coming 👍

      Really good comment Ashley! You’re absolutely right, it does make it a little awkward, but there is a way past, just… if this was going to be a huge issue in a match, I’d ensure that the longer legs were actually at middle and back positions and simply have the tray sitting slightly further back than the whole length of the Seatbox… I guess you’d just need to weigh up what you’d need more, the comfort/ease of reaching bait on a long pole, or getting into that margin, which you’re dead right, it could very well be the latter! Great shout 👍🏻 BB

    Top tip BB , tackle company’s should use this info and put 2 legs as standard at the 730mm when selling there boxes

      That’s a great shout Danny, even if they charged a little extra for the Seatbox, to have the option of which you have in situ for your set-up would be great! I won’t lie, it’s a little hassle to cut the legs down to a reasonable height and as I was doing it for the first time, I had no option but to take the whole thing apart and see if it was possible… but once I’d done it, it’s been well worth it! 👍🏻 BB

    Love the video pal👍🏻 I have the same problem being 6ft3 with long legs, I've had to add an extra couple stackers to my preston seat box and found my side trays are to low, ordered the 750mm long legs but way to tall, seen your video and did as you have done but instead I've cut mine back too 620mm which is perfect cut back the internal legs to suit, refitted the small anti drop out screw to the internal leg and hey presto right size legs , doesn't stop there the 2 of cuts I've bought 2 bungs and 2 threatened leg endcaps and now have 2 spare mini bank sticks for my side tray leg adapters 👍🏻

      Thanks Stuart… it’s really helped me out and to be honest, I just don’t feel the screw-in extenders do the job… use them for a couple of months and they become really flimsy 🤷🏻‍♂️ but the longer legs are also very loooooong… so after having a play with them and realising you can cut a significant 6-7 inches off them… then that becomes a game changer and worth the investment, for me! 👍🏻 BB

    Enjoy your vids BB but looking at how Ur sat on your box, Ur feet are up on your toes and thighs slanting down so your backside needs to go down in height bringing you closer to your original side tray height. Get them knees 90 degrees.

    BB,thanks for the tip.Quick question. Did the new legs come with threaded inserts in the top or just plastic caps? If threaded inserts did you prise out from the top or push out from the bottom with inner leg removed? Thanks

    • @FirstTimeFishing
      @FirstTimeFishing  2 роки тому

      No problem Vince… with mine, once we knew how far the extended leg intruded with the first (as we had no choice but to prise the bung off, in not knowing where the extending leg sat internally), we simply cut to the length I said in the video, then forced the bung out from the inside of the leg part you cut off, so push it out instead of prising it out… it has the same tops at the normal legs, screw caps and a thread… hope that makes sense 👍🏻 BB

      This was exactly what I thought my problem would be Mr B… but I cut them down after working out where exactly I could cut them without interfering with the telescopic inserts, tried it in the car by tilting the box so that the longer legs sat in the rear passenger headspace, and boom, I was lucky, it fitted perfectly… they can be carried separately or taken off quite easily, but that’s a faff you don’t have to do with the normal legs that come with the box 🤷🏻‍♂️ BB

    Hello, what a model of side tray ?

  • @customrattysuk
    @customrattysuk 2 роки тому +1

    To me you wasn't sat comfortably,slightly slouched back on your seat,table to high in my view to be able to fish your margin easily,but if it works for you then a good idea,but the main point i have is the cost of having to buy 4 x new legs at say average price between £50-60 for 4 as you ideally need 3 for your table to support it correctly doesn't justify the cost just to raise the table a few inches👍👍

    • @FirstTimeFishing
      @FirstTimeFishing  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ratty, you’re certainly right that I didn’t look like I was sat comfortably, cause my camera was down the drive and I wasn’t fishing 😂 I was sat casually… when pole fishing, I can assure you my feet are perfectly flat on the foot plate and knees at a 90 degree angle 😂 but good observation 👍🏻…
      With my side-tray, it’s self supporting and only has 2 connection points, so I only needed the 2 legs… 2 for £50 (if you buy the matrix ones and want them to specifically match a matrix box), however a subscriber has commented on here and said that Decathlon sell silver aluminium ones in 36mm at 65cm tall for £12.99 each… like you said, it certainly works for me having the side-tray higher, actually STOPS my back from aching and bending down sideways for bait, drinks etc (whatever is on my tray), especially when fishing pellet wag… I can still fish the margin, no issue, I just sit a little forward in my seat… but luxury is, with the extended legs, you don’t have to have the side-tray in its highest position, you can lower it 🤷🏻‍♂️ the user has the option of putting it at whatever height they want it, but your restricted on height with the originals… not for everybody, but will certainly help some people out 👍🏻 thanks for the comment and being part of the channel 👍🏻 BB
