I’ve just bought An S36 (my first box as just starting pole fishing) and came across this video. From my perspective a few tips on how to fish commercials with pole. If you were limited to 4 top 2s what setups would you do for these. Great video and easy to listen to as well. Looking forward to your future content.
Great question mate… So, there’s only a few ways you can catch fish at commercials… 1. Out in front and on the bottom (you only really need one top kit set up for this, but 2 would be nice, one short, one long as both may be different depths). 2. Tight to an island, normally about 3/4 foot, one top kit needed. 3. Margin, two top kits useful here, one for left, one for right, but if you had a tipex pen or marker, you can simply mark the float depth on one top kit as will normally be different depths. 4. Shallow/off the bottom, fish are caught at all depths dependent on weather, temperature, wind, pressure, how full or starving they are. So one top kit that can be adjusted from 6” deep to just off the bottom. They’re the only ways you’re going to catch on a pole really at commercials, so if you had 4 top kits… I would - 1 shallow 1 margin 1 island 1 full depth out in front That’ll cover most of it, hope that helps mate 👍🏻 BB
The Shakespeare box must go down in fishing history! It's an absolute legend and when you added Octoplus (can you still get these?) legs, brilliant. Only trouble was, it held loads of stuff and made it heavey haha
You’re absolutely right 72! It should given a fishing Knighthood! The Octoplus legs were epic! I reckon a lot of the features on seatboxes have been taken from that setup! The mud feet were like dinner plates! 👍🏻 BB
It’s all simple really Paul, your weight of your feeder completely depends on how far you’re casting, up to 25m - 20g, up to 50m 30g and 50m plus, 30g+… that’s how I work anyway, and you quiver depends on what you’re catching/distance you’re fishing eg. You wouldn’t have a 1oz glass tip with a 45g feeder… so quiver as light as you can go, to get the distance normally 👍🏻 BB
Quality Bro, love your video, its honest and has given me some good ideas, I have just purchased the Matrix S25 super box in green and I absolutely love it, its light and does everything I need it to do. I actually have the matrix xl side try for all my bait and the Matrix Pro bait brolly which is an amazing bit of kit which keeps all my bait dry in the the winter and shields it from the sun in the summer. Hi BB, been looking at the XR36 Comp and came across your channel - like your style so subbed right away. I have always been a chair man but decided with only a couple of years to go until retirement it was time to try something new, so bought myself a pole. There are some very good cheaper options available but being a bit of a big boy the width of the XR36 got me interested …… now you have me thinking about the pro again. Great vlog, keep it up
Andy… over the moon you’ve joined us on the channel! Sounds like we were pretty similar really, I love a chair… but it’s certainly awkward with a pole! With the accessory options you have, it’s a no brained to get a seat box, but it all depends on your budget… I’ve heard the XR36 Comp is a great bit of kit and as you can alter the height, there’s no need for trays galore (I have 2 deep side trays and 1 winder tray in my box to make it the right height), they are both the same width as each other for continuity but you’re right, they offer one of the most generous seats around for ‘bigger’ anglers. To get one a similar seat size, you have to look at the Rive RSW which is mega £££. Matrix and Preston boxes are leading the way at the minute in my opinion. Thanks for the comment, BB 👍🏻
@@FirstTimeFishing Hi BB, yes I did. I went for the XR36 Comp in the end and very pleased with it. Welcome to the channel Tubbs and thanks for being part of it… thanks for your kind words! EVERYONE has had a plastic box, they’re ace! Sorry to hear yours was nicked buddy 👍🏻 BB
I have a matrix s36 and love it … I don’t love the tray catches so much though they are p1ss poor and don’t lock closed properly. But I’ll live with that 😊 great vids mate 👍
Been feeder and method feeder fishing for years. Recently swapped rivers for commercials and am struggling with floats. Would love a guide to setting up floats for carp etc
Floats are really simple Andy… for commercials, my pattern is always a bulk of shot halfway between my float and hook and then an equal spread from bulk to hook of say 3 shots… from a float perspective, I wouldn’t venture anywhere other than the Preston floats really, and then use their patterns to match up with other floats, like the gurus and drennans… take a look at the float patterns on the Preston range and they’ll show you what pattern is best for which type of fishing 👍🏻 maybe it’s something we can cover in a live Q&A video in the future 👍🏻 but hope that helps… BB
Great choice Peter! And thanks for the feedback! I love not being reliant on any legs of the Seatbox... literally, wherever I put my box, my accessories will always fit wherever I decide to fish! Do you have a box currently that you’re upgrading? Tight lines, BB
@@FirstTimeFishing Absolutely amazing. Does all it says on the box. Its a heavy box with all the attachments and items i carry but you cant have it all. I am currently waiting for my new Seat which is coming from Seat Box UK. I had previously had 3 x Trabucco seat boxes which i found unbelievable value. Cheers PT
@@FirstTimeFishing Its a custom spec from Seatbox UK which is slighly higher but also even more comfortable than the one which is part of the box. 2 of my club mates have also got Seat Box Uk to make them New ones, one has gone on a Preston Absolute Box and one on my old Trabbucco GNT box. PT
That’s great news Andy! They are certainly 2 totally different ways of fishing, but playing the fish is very similar, so you can bring that attribute across! What pole have you got? Have you got to grips with the different elastics? BB
Good review and comments. Totally agree you don’t need all the top gear when your starting out or just don’t fancy spending a lot. A Shakespeare box will last you forever. Hiya. Would really jave appreciated you talking through how you use your setup when fishing feeder or method, i can see you have the attachmemts, but didnt voice iver like you did for pole and match fishing. I have recently upgraded my old Ron Thompson Carbonite seat box to lime Matrix S25 superbox which is very similar to the cheaper s36 you showed but with the slimmer legs. Great box and brand
I won’t lie Andy, I wouldn’t know where to start with Pike fishing… Predator fishing has never been a great pull of mine, but I’ll definitely give it a go someday! 💪🏻 BB
Newly subscribed thanks to angling4u, was using a blue Shakespeare box, still do for sea angling, just like to say the breakaway backrest is very comfortable stops slouching, I was given a daiwa match/pole box but found it really uncomfortable with the legs and footplate. I use now a backrest which is much more comfortable but is very heavy. Have to remove the legs ,backrest and footplate to fit in the car boot not so with the Shakespeare box and backrest
Mark! Welcome to the channel and thanks so much for the excellent comment… no one has mentioned the breakaway back rest… and this along with the extra padded cushion that Shakespeare sell, in a package for around £50 is a fantastic cheaper option… I have to admit that I’d never heard of the breakaway back rest, but looking at it and hearing what you have to say about your recommendation, it sounds just the job if you don’t get on with a box with traditional legs and footplate… I owe a lot to the Angling4u boys, I’m really pleased that some of their subscribers have come to also join us over here, it’s a massive compliment, so thank you 👍🏻 BB
@@FirstTimeFishing ive just sent a message to Breakaway asking to see if its possible to adapt a Breakaway back rest onto the rear legs of a match/pole box as it would be lighter. If you get one, look forward to the review. Ridge Monkey have a comfy box included seat cushion, backrest for around £20-£24 was a gift but once the lids on its pretty tough to get into-tight fit
Thanks Kris… have bought myself a microphone this month, so I can hopefully do some ‘on the bank’ videos… appreciate the subscription mate and welcome, tight lines! BB 👍🏻
That’s a great idea Adrian if you don’t want to lug the heavy stuff around... I’m going to record a similar video with a Matrix 4 wheel transporter soon... your S36 box fits perfectly to it and would mean your box could go wherever you need it... I’d highly recommend one! But river fishing has fairly standard and minimal tackle, so I do think the Shakespeare box is a great shout! 👍🏻
@@FirstTimeFishing i have a map 4 wheel transporter that i have added a golf caddy motor axle to . The matrix one was not out when i got it but i am thinking of getting one and transferring the motor axle over
Hi Ash, great question... it’s to rest either the butt end of my rod or top section of pole once I’ve landed a fish and taking it out the net to free my hands... I rest the length section of the rod or pole on the bump bar, just means the rod or pole is safe and goes no-where... hopefully that makes sense? BB
@@FirstTimeFishing ye makes sense just thought it mite of got in the way but Ye a can understand it. I just tend to use the pole sock. Keep the videos coming.
How often do you find you actually use the pole rest in the middle of the seat and the rest infront? Do you not typically find you're holding it under your arm most of the time? Just wondered about getting one set up, and would love to hear your thoughts.
Alright Andy… only really comes into its own when bites are hard to come by, like winter fishing, for me… especially at near 16m, if bites aren’t quick at that length, unless you have a ££££ pole, it can be an effort fishing that distance all day… I’d sooner throw a waggler out… but the pole rest is a ‘god send’ in those slow situations! BB
Hi BB, I just bought the XR competition H frame box. I notice that you. Have the Preston pole support on your box, but is my box wider? I ask because the pole support seems to attach to the box a bit wonky. Or is there a solution to my problem?
Hi James… it is a touch wonky but you can bend each side so it’s equal at a slight angle if that makes sense… as long as the bump bar is flat, it doesn’t matter with the Preston pole support if the connecting arms are at a slight angle… it’s the best pole bar in the business in my opinion… does that help? 🤷🏻♂️ BB
Hi thanks for the videos pal. I'm looking at getting the matrix extending side tray to put on my Preston box. My question is the tray comes with legs but I hate using additional legs I want to get a support arm like yourself but worry it might make the box bit wobbly when not sat on It? What are your thoughts please?
Hi Sam, it’s an excellent extending tray... on viewing some footage of Jon Arthur (Matrix Consultant) he appears to have the extending tray with a single 3D-R Side Tray Support Arm on the middle leg... when extended, the tray is anchored on all 3 side legs of the box, therefore, should be sturdy enough... and in all honesty, if a Matrix consultant has advertised a support arm with the extending tray, that’s the answer that it works, for me. I’d go for it personally, but if you always wanted to double check, your local tackle shop would be able to tell you over the phone... there’s no reason they couldn’t try it while you wait on the phone if they have a tray and support arm in stock... let me know how it works if you choose the support arm option... 👍🏻 BB
It all depends on the ground bait David and trial and error… are you finding it comes off in cast or doesn’t come off the feeder? You have to find a happy medium with the bait you’re using… my advice is to add your water, but less than you think… let it soak for 15 mins and then griddle it… then once griddled, take a handful and squeeze it, if it stays as it has been squeezed it’ll be good to go… if there’s bits breaking off it, you need to repeat the process with a little less water than before, let it soak and then griddle again… once it stays the shape of your squeezed hand on release, it’ll be good to go 👍🏻 BB
Whichever is going to be comfiest for you Dave, it depends whether you're going to be match fishing or not... cause I'd always go with the seat box, but you can get similar results and improved comfort from something like the Preston Absolute feeder chair... you can stick all your accessories on! BB
I started up a couple of years ago, started with the standard box, I the found a nice seat box and pole for sale on Facebook, it’s quite old but good quality and paid about 200 quid! Good video! I would love to see some videos in a big fish tank that shows the presentation and the different influences shorting patterns have.
Hi Robin... shows you don’t have to spend a massive amount to set yourself up well for fishing and matches! Pole and seat box for that price is fantastic... there’s so much decent second hand tackle available at the moment! I’d also love to see a video with how different shotting patterns look and present in a big tank... but you’re never going to get the correct fall and see how each pattern acts when entering the water unless you simulate a 4-6ft deep tank... I remember going to ‘the big one’ fishing show, where they had such a tank, and that was brilliant to watch! As a basic rule... if you want the bait on the deck ASAP, bulk your shot near your hook length, if you want a completely natural fall (like you would to fish shallow and off the bottom) your shot needs to be just below your float, but if you want a stable float and more natural fall than placing all bulk shot by hook length, spread the whole shot throughout the whole rig... 👍🏻 BB
Hi XD, I’m bigger than you, and as long as you tighten the extendable legs firmly with the turning knobs, they sit exactly where they should... I’ve only had one time where one of the back legs snapped shut, but it’s cause I’d only lightly tightened the knob whilst getting the seat box square! I can only speak for the Matrix seat boxes, as that’s the brand I’ve always gone for. It’s really important when setting up the box, you keep it in its lowest position possible when out of the water... at least one leg should always be at its lowest position... you can raise them all when in water, but if the angler was 300lb+, I’d strongly recommend a platform to sit the box on rather than extending all the legs significantly! For the larger angler I’d also only recommend full-framed seat boxes, not the ‘H’ frame seat-boxes like Matrix XR36 Comp or Preston Inception. I would also recommend buying a box with 36mm legs and avoid the 30mm and 25mm legs... hope this helps? Are there any particular boxes you’ve been looking at? Or are you simply just considering one? I’m confident your local tackle shop would be more than happy to allow you to try out the ranges they stock, with your weight and the legs extended, so you have full confidence before buying 👍🏻, BB
@@FirstTimeFishing didn’t wanna come across as rude just didn’t know how to word it. But thanks!! I use to do match fishing as a kid so I just wanna get back into it

Good evening Mr Kennington… you’re very observant and your eyes don’t deceive you! I am a big chap!
Similar to my set up. Good channel for the novice Fisherman. Nice one. PS: Waiting for my XR36 Pro in Lime to arrive. Great box. Cheers
Great choice Peter! And thanks for the feedback! I love not being reliant on any legs of the Seatbox... literally, wherever I put my box, my accessories will always fit wherever I decide to fish! Do you have a box currently that you’re upgrading? Tight lines, BB
Peter, how you getting on with your new Seatbox? BB
Cheers PT
@@peterthornton8520 has you ordered a new top seat or is it a custom spec? BB
PT
Thanks for all your advice, please keep them coming. I’ve just moved over from carp rods to pole fishing so any tips would be great 😊👍
That’s great news Andy! They are certainly 2 totally different ways of fishing, but playing the fish is very similar, so you can bring that attribute across! What pole have you got? Have you got to grips with the different elastics? BB
@@FirstTimeFishing not yet, although the new sliks pretty good 👍
Sliks are the future I think mate... I simply can’t fault them! BB
@@andybeckett6508 Andy, have you managed to do much pole fishing? BB
Just seen your channel n subscribed...enjoyed the video
Welcome to the channel and to the ‘First Time Fishing’ Family Terry! 👍🏻 BB
Good video
And you’re a good subscriber Terry 👍🏻 thanks for your support! BB
Good review and comments. Totally agree you don’t need all the top gear when your starting out or just don’t fancy spending a lot. A Shakespeare box will last you forever. Still can’t get rid of mine even though I’m all D36 this and that now 😂😂. Great channel. subbed. All the best Pete tight lines 🎣
Thanks Pete, great comment! No one can seem to knock the Shakespeare box! 👍🏻 BB
great informative video helped me alot!
Thanks Urban Angler, glad you found it helpful! 👍🏻 BB
Nice setup 👍 thanks for sharing.
Have you thought of adding threaded inserts to the top of your box legs as an extra mounting point?
Hi Bill, yes mate, the threads are a great option... I’m going to explore it now you’ve reminded me, see if it gives me any extra space anywhere 👍🏻 thanks, BB
Great new channel 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Adrian 👍🏻
Can you do a video on a full pole set up at any point ? Want to get into pike fishing but not sure where to start
I won’t lie Andy, I wouldn’t know where to start with Pike fishing… Predator fishing has never been a great pull of mine, but I’ll definitely give it a go someday! 💪🏻 BB
@@FirstTimeFishing was meant to say pole not pike 😂my mistake
@@andypitt6250 I’ll see what I can do Andy 👍🏻 BB

I have a Shakespeare box for small river pleasure fishing when i dont need my Matrix s36 and all the match gear
The matrix one was not out when i got it but i am thinking of getting one and transferring the motor axle over
Ps. have you seen the match fishing channel my brother and i have Margerison match fishing.

How do you set up for feeder fishing and pole fishing with feeder arm
It’s nice to be able to have all the nice stuff. But all the old stuff just work as well . Just the same as pricey stuff
Great comment Carl, thanks for taking the time 👍🏻 BB
All the best with your fishin. See ya on bank sometime
Orite bud great video pal just a quick one what's the 2nd butt rest for at the back rite of the box as u sat on it
Hi Ash, great question... it’s to rest either the butt end of my rod or top section of pole once I’ve landed a fish and taking it out the net to free my hands...
How to attach the method feeder and float I subscribed
Good job!
Thanks Allan 👍
👍🏻 BB
Did the support arm work Sam? I’ve just bought the giant Feederland XL side tray which is self supporting! Really impressive but of kit 👍🏻 BB
Hi big bird ' i am having trouble with getting my ground bait right for the method can you help.
Jigger fishing and pellet waggler fishing
Love the Jigger Stuart! I started filming a Jigger video, but unfortunately, none of the fish were up in the water 😆 BB
BIG BIRD I WAS GETTING BACK PAIN FROM MY CHAIR SO GOT A WESTLAKE SEAT BOX THEN FOUND OUT IT WAS A MEDICAL PROBLEM SHOULD GO BOX OR CHAIR
Whichever is going to be comfiest for you Dave, it depends whether you're going to be match fishing or not... cause I'd always go with the seat box, but you can get similar results and improved comfort from something like the Preston Absolute feeder chair... you can stick all your accessories on! BB
@@FirstTimeFishing THANKS for your help mate keep the videos coming best on utube

👍🏻 BB
@@FirstTimeFishing the is mate, love the videos keep it up!
Just wondering with your weight, do things go wrong on the seat boxes with the extendable legs? I’m 300+

Good evening Mr Kennington… you’re very observant and your eyes don’t deceive you! I am a big chap! The best way to fix my back is to not actually have the box completely level… slant the box slight forward, only slightly, so the weight goes a little more towards your feet… hopefully that might be better for you 🤞🏻 BB
