Villages in Demak on the northern coast of Indonesia's Central Java have slowly but surely been disappearing under water, as erosion and groundwater extraction have caused the land to sink below sea level. Seven villages have been submerged so far, with most residents having to relocate. But a few still choose to live in their homes that are flooded on a daily basis.

"The government urged the people to leave but not offered any real solution " This is very typical of Indonesian government whether it's local or central government. They always behave like that. They actually know what the problem is but kinda lazy to act and move to solve the real problems, sometimes they could swift to any less important matters and make it public issues or even worse they would blaming the people as if it's just their own problem.
Yeah, i dont know why less important news become national news and our people enjoy it. Watching it. But the real issue like this? There's no news. Almost zero. Goverment just wanted people to moving without giving their solutions like a job? Beside being fisherman. Or maybe low rent house? They cant just paid house after moving (in full that cost you more than $10.000) None. I hate them.
I think it is very typical of any government. The Philippine government is also like that... maybe even worse.
@@Kuyabakas acquisition with no proof😂
It's not that they lazy to act, i know that politicians are actually hardworking due to their 24 hours full schedules, it's just they're absolutely clueless and not smart enough to handle this problem
Not to mention some of them are lack of moral and principals and cared so much about their own agenda. Wanna find their empathy? You will find nothing
"The government has urger people to move further inland, but it has not offered any real solutions" have no idea about indonesian rules and government, but seems like perfect how to describe it
The point some of their view are move move and move to the Highland or maybe the dirt condition, because most people use underground water because it was cheap and easier only few use Pam why because it was Expensive
Ironically, they let a very prominent group to bought and develop the highland into exclusive community. The land price soars so incredibly high
more like gov urge they to move but not giving any insentif of money or new house for their new home
@@ahmadcampboss Bingo the government is incompetent but time is running out before the hold of Indonesia is underwater
Climate change is changing the lives of all of us.
The seasons are no longer the same as they used to be. Rainy season, summer, winter, spring, I no longer know when the schedule is.
Floods, storms, droughts, we really have to adjust to it all.
Yes, at my place in Indonesia, sometimes there are long rains in the summer which sometimes cause crop failure.
4 times a year climate changing! Get used to it!
This is true. now Indonesia should be summer season but almost every day there is rain. This even affects the temperature which makes the temperature cooler than the rainy season. This makes some farmers get crop failure on some commodities that should be grown in the summer :')
Would love to see more content like this from SCMP.
Demak area hundreds of years ago was a sea. recorded historically and research. if there is no action then it really goes back to being the sea again. the government's efforts are making a giant wall, but the village in the video doesn't
Not only government but the whole world must do something, more and more people affected by climate change 😢
Watching this documentary gave me that sinking feeling.
Pun intended?
I am really happy that I live deep in planes and
Just below Himalayas.
The unclear spatial layout of coastal settlements makes the community affected by sea water abrasion. In short, local governments and national land agencies have failed to apply the concept of urban planning to coastal settlements. They have no desire to imitate other countries in how they organize cities that are neat and clean, especially for coastal residents who are mostly fishermen.
That's Indonesia for you,but it is kinda hard to do that
Basically the people should also be responsible for this phenomenon bcs they're harming the coastal ecosystem especially the mangrove tree day by day
MOST OF ASEAN IS LIKE THAT, JUST TAKE MY COUNTRY AS AN EXAMPLE, WE DON'T DO CITY PLANNING.
more like theres no initiative...
Third world Capitalist countries are extremely corrupt and have almost no government input into the economy, its closest thing you will get to Laissez Faire, uncontrolled market growth, they are entirely reliant on market economy to come up with solutions, but there is no profit to be made from poor people so there you go.
how ironic that a former colony of the netherlands which has most of its land under sea level all the water under complete control meanwhile indonesian government can't even do the same for any village let alone city... blaming glaciers melting is one thing but this is entirely the fault of an incompetent government elected by the wrong people, indonesia has so many other problems that are also all government related...
totally agreed.
Terrible comparison, Indonesia is an island how can it implement the same tactics, the Netherlands uses to keep sea levels down?
Welp, they get rid most of netherlands out of country that actually 'blessing in disguise' since they are better on ruling people somehow
@@thetaboyswag2307 Agree. I think every single problem in Indonesia you can either blame it on the corrupt goverment or the uneducated people.
@@thetaboyswag2307 if you understood how it works, you'd know it wouldn't matter whether indonesia is an """""""island""""" this is simply a case of not spending taxpayer's money in the right places, corruption, and lack of knowledge and education.

I live in that city but pretty far from the coast. I heard about this condition from like years ago since junior high school (now it looks like it got worst). I still remember when I visited that place once, I saw a graveyard that submerg in the sea every time the water level rise.
@Noogle Noodle my condolences.
I noticed some houses still have electricity. I would be nervous to use the light switch.

Primate city is a common problem in developing countries, especially Indonesia. More than 70% developments in Indonesia are only focused on Jakarta as its capital. A few of supporting cities nearby are lucky enough to join the ride but most of them don’t have the luxury to. This is why you won’t have to be worried if Indonesia is ever going to invade other countries over territory, because we can’t even manage our own territory to its fullest potential yet.
City of the apes? Gorilla and chimpanzees? Sound cool
No different than our capital city, Manila.

Such an important topic. I like when news stories have such beautiful cinematography
Yet that area used to be underwater as well, before it dried up and a lot of people moves there to build villages
I remember when I was young, I used to visit my relatives in Pekanbaru and they stayed in houses like these near the river.
For you who say why not plant a lot of mangrove they already did, but you also have to know that mangrove growth is super slow, it's around 10 years for a meter tall.
There once was an indonesian village long ago, walls were built around it and then a new land was created above that village... It has remained untouched since 800 years ago...
The government urged the people to leave but not offered any real solution " This is very typical of Indonesian government
Mereka tidak menjelaskan kalau daerah situ pada jaman dahulu kala memang laut
The government has urged people to move further inland
But it has not offered any real solutions:(
I hope these people get new homes in some place that is more elevated.
it's kinda hard to move to other place, since most of those people have low income to afford buying new house or even just for a rent.. since they can't sell their old house.
Not only in indonesia but also the pacific island countries people who live there are looking now for immigration.
It’s a total different situation. The Pacific islands main issue is rising sea levels.
The Indonesian issue is sinking land mass due to groundwater extraction via water pumps and wells. The population growth is too huge and exerted huge gaps between surface land and the vacuum where ground water once flowed, causing the sinking and collapse. It’s totally irreversible and coupled with rising sea levels, Indonesia is experiencing the loss of huge land mass due to non-war conditions.
And if population growth is not curbed, and more water catchment areas, reservoirs and other water generating methods being deployed, more places will experience land loss. Groundwater will be insufficient to replenish normally.

I wonder why raise the house instead of making a barrier between the house and water. Preferably 2 barriers, so when/if the outside fails, the inner would buy some time to repair the outer. Oh wait nevermind. The water would just come from the dirt itself.
This is sad. 10 years from now, this village would be completely submerged under the water. It is like watching your entire memories get wiped out by the flood.
Coming from a person who laugh about someones death. Hyrocrite
The report looks incomplete. It does not mention why the ground water was lost. Was it industries? Was it large scale farming? Or was the water extracted for some other purpose? And why measures were not taken before to avoid this situation? or if they did take, then why did they fail?
Probably construction,Waterways/underground water pipe,or other
Unregulated, irresponsible, sometimes necessary groundwater extraction, either for residential, commercial, or industrial use. It's very common in Indonesia due to the lack of piped water. The government does not care about urban planning and providing adequate infrastructure to the people. Instead of fixing the capital city, they wanted to run away and create another capital city, leaving the current one sinking and in shambles. It's hopeless.
Indonesia isn't really technologically advanced (yet).
We're forced to use water beneath us directly, because we don't have that much pipe systems.
Plus the capital is like very overpopulated.

When I see this, I can say that compared to Indonesia, Philippines is a bit luckier and better to live in because we don't experience this for a long time. Yes, we experience flood but it just happens when we are hit by a typhoon or severe rainfall. The only problem in our country is heat. It's very hot in here especially this summer.
It’s a totally different situation. The land is lost due to sinking. The gap where groundwater once flowed is empty and becomes a vacuum, causing the land to sink or collapse, lost forever.
If the Indonesians continue to use water pumps and wells to extract ground water, soon, the will lose huge tracts of ground unprecedented in human history and territorial size to shrink significantly. The only territory lost that is non-war.
I know barangays which get submerged when high tide. So we are all somewhat in the same situation.
How about those subdivisions/ townhomes which uses submersible pumps to extract water to be used.Sooner or later there will be a vacuum underground
@@wackynwackyn3658 that’s exactly what happened in most other countries, which the cottages caused sinkholes nearby.
But Indonesia is on the large scale to extract for the entire population… so instead of sinkholes, the entire land mass is at risk. Already Jakarta is in deep trouble. Just a matter of time it will affect the rest of Indonesia. The displaced people of Jakarta will move to nearby areas, and caused the same elsewhere.

The solution is, introducing birth-control into the villages, reducing the population, using less groundwater, slowing the land-sinking.

If the government is not willing to invest in having more reservoirs, water catchment areas, and piping to towns and cities, by let the people to wilfully use these primitive methods, Indonesia will shrink greatly, and will never be able to support a run-away population growth.
